Steven Universe is no stranger to Funny Moments, but for the movie, Sugar and co. decided to remind us that they haven't lost their comedic touch!

Spoilers Off applies to all Moments pages, so ALL spoilers are unmarked! Proceed with caution.

Promotions:

  • This video released in advance of the movie, in which the crew keep talking about how Steven's character model now has a neck. The video is even titled "Steven's New Neck".

The Movie:

  • The opening is reminiscent of a Golden Age Disney movie... and turns out to be White Diamond reading from a book to the entire Gem civilization. She's even holding the book up to the camera so everyone can see the pictures.
  • At the end of his speech to every Gem in the universe Steven says he's going back to Earth. Displeased by this news, White Diamond orders, on camera, for Yellow Pearl to cut the transmission. Yellow Pearl snarks at White that her "time was up anyway". Blue Pearl can't help but giggle at this.
    • Look closely at the "End of Show" screen when the Pearls shut down the feed. It's the two of them smiling in their own ways (as in Yellow Pearl looking smug and Blue Pearl having a small smile).
  • In general, just the way the Diamonds are portrayed in their scenes. They act exactly like the kind of aunts/grandmothers that don't understand your boundaries and are just doing everything in their power to coddle you and wedge themselves into your life, especially now that they're in retirement (so to speak) and have nothing else to do. There's something to be said from how much they're trying to be better compared to how they were before, even if it's just to please Steven, but given that the narrative has shifted away from them, it's Played for Laughs. And, frankly, there's nothing better to alleviate the tension from the movie's climax than the Diamonds basically going "cooie!" at Steven's door.
    • The Diamonds overly doting on Steven and trying to get him to move into the palace on Homeworld, despite how poorly Steven living on Homeworld went during Season 5. Steven's response is to leave as quickly as possible.
    • White Diamond hilariously going from an all-powerful, greatly feared, towering being to literally begging on her knees for Steven to stay.
    • White accidentally makes Steven topple over when her hand hits the ground. The next shot shows her keeling over with Blue and Yellow clambering on her to speak to Steven, and White doesn't mind in the slightest. It's hilarious and heartwarming, because it shows how much more comfortable and relaxed the Diamonds are with each other now.
    • The difference in expressions the Diamonds make when they say "Just let us adore you". Yellow looks like she's cooking up a heinous plan with her hand clawed like a villain, White has her hands clasped to her heart like she's swooning, and Blue looks like she's cooing over Steven's cuteness.
    • The Diamonds try to guilt-trip Steven by pointing out all they've done for Steven with Yellow dismantling her armies and ending the colonization of worlds, Blue not ordering the shattering of Gems and not making other Gems cry, and White saying "please and thank you, even to lower lifeforms". They essentially Want a Prize for Basic Decency, and that prize is Steven.
    • Just the fact that the Diamonds are thousands of years old (maybe even older than that), yet were so bored and missed Steven so much after he left for what couldn't have been a full day, that they decided to come to Earth to live with him after Spinel's defeat. Steven isn't amused one bit, especially since all they do since they arrive is criticize everything around them and insincerely parrot his beliefs, cluing Steven in to what has to endure 24-7 if they do stay.
White: [shoving aside Yellow and Blue] This is taking too long! [singsongy] Steven! We've come to Earth to live with yoooou!
Steven: WHAT?! My house isn't big enough for all of us!
      • The thing that dissuades them is seeing and smelling the destruction that Spinel has caused and assuming it's Earth's natural state.
      • White's criticism of Earth itself is worded hilariously, especially given the state of Homeworld, and to top it all off, she says it with a vague hand-flip towards the wreckage like a rich, prissy grandma.
      • The Diamonds trying way too hard to be nice by awkwardly trying to walk back their criticism of Earth, with Blue saying "they're not judging", completely ignoring the fact her main job as head of the entire Gem judicial system is to judge. White follows up by agreeing because "judging ANYTHING based on appearance is wroooong!" Steven's expression makes it very clear he is well aware that she still isn't the slightest bit sincere.
      • White Diamond seems to be playing up the hamminess in order to guilt-trip Steven again, just like a regular grandmother would. The fact that every step she takes shakes the ground doesn't help her act.
White: But Steven! It's been soooo boring since you've left! [sobs] I guess we'll just waiiiit for you to visit us wheneeeeever you'reeeee reeeeady...
    • When White resolves to bring Spinel with her, she prefaces her invitation with a cheery "Steven, since the Earth is so disgusting..."
  • Steven's amusement at Connie wanting to go to space camp (NASA) when she's actually been to space multiple times.
  • Connie kissing Steven on the cheek, especially his reaction and the face she makes when she runs away (like she's super proud of it).
  • Greg is teaching Pearl to play the bass, but she keeps insisting in pronouncing it with a short "a" like the fish.
    • It's even funnier if one assumes that she's doing this intentionally (and, given the development she's gone through over the series as well as her considerable musical talents, it's entirely possible).
  • A meta-joke: When Steven enters Lion's mane, a Freeze-Frame Bonus shows that Rose's chest, subject of so much fan speculation, was opened...offscreen. Well trolled, Crewniverse.
  • Steven picking a flower, then using his healing spit to regenerate a new one from the stalk.
  • Spinel, despite how serious of a threat she is, moving as if she came straight from a 1930s cartoon. Plus, the constant laughter can start to seem less threatening and more silly (if one focuses less on the world-ending part).
    • At one point when fighting Pearl, Spinel chooses to flick Pearl on the nose. Pearl's annoyed expression is what really sells it.
  • Greg's reaction upon seeing Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst all poofed by Spinel and laid out on a table:
Greg: Holy sssshhhh-she really got everybody!
  • Upon Steven saying he has no idea what's going on, Greg can't resist telling him, "Now you know how I feel almost all the time."
  • The contrast between Spinel before and after getting hit by the Rejuvenator, which becomes a Tear Jerker when we find out what caused her to change for the worse.
  • The amnesiac Amethyst keeps repeating what Steven says to her.
  • Thanks to Pearl getting reset to "factory settings" she provides several scenes of humor. To wit:
    • Accidentally bonding to Greg (or "UmGregUniverse", as she keeps calling him) and becoming his devoted servant, which really creeps him out.
    • Pearl's first act is to break out into song, explaining (to a degree) herself, what the Gems reforming are supposed to do and be, and adding a bit of Innocently Insensitive remarks concerning Amethyst's form and that "something is clearly wrong" (complete with a goofy face at the end which Amethyst mimics).
    • The way she introduces Spinel wouldn't sound out of place in a toy commercial:
      This will be fun!
      Aren't you the lucky one?
Her cut is perfect and she's pink as well!
      She'll bring you endless entertainment!
      Your new best friend, Spinel!
    • The mere title of her song itself—"System/BOOT.pearl_final(3).Info"—is this for just how oddball it is compared to the rest.
    • She pulls out an umbrella on the beach to keep Greg in the shade. Amethyst shapeshifts into Greg, which causes Pearl to become confused as to who she ought to be covering.
    • Amethyst shapeshifts into Pearl, who stares at her in contemplation. Amethyst copies her pose.
    • Pearl chauffeuring Greg to Little Homeworld and setting up a little stepladder and red carpet before letting him out of the back with a tiny horn of fanfare and pompously formal introduction. He doesn't acknowledge it and almost trips trying to step off the stepladder.
    • Greg mentions having to wrestle his dirty laundry out of her hands.
    • Cleaning the wheels of his van. Greg yells to Pearl that she doesn't need to do that because he owns a car wash.
    • Even in the middle of the concert, Pearl only stares at Greg the whole time. This is despite the many times he tries to get her to look at the stage. It gets less funny when she ignores Amethyst when she takes on Rose's form, though. Only to go right back to funny when Greg is too distraught to do more than a few half-hearted claps at the end, to which Pearl eagerly says "Don't worry! I can clap for you!" and rapid-fire applauds.
  • Steven's dramatic "You!" Exclamation after Spinel reforms is worth a few chuckles.
  • Steven angrily shakes Spinel while questioning what she did to him and his friends. But Spinel, thinking it's a game, declares now it's Steven's turn, and wraps her Rubber-Hose Limbs around Steven and shakes him wildly. Shortly after this when Spinel finally notices the other Gems, we see a Funny Background Event of Amethyst shaking Ruby.
  • Steven sighing to himself at he can at least store Spinel's weapon away in Lion's mane. He then proceeds to press the Rejuvenator against his mane only for it to fall unceremoniously onto the ground.
  • Ruby doesn't want to follow Steven to Little Homeworld...until Sapphire says that she sees them doing just that.
  • When Steven is telling Peridot, Lapis, and Bismuth what's going on, Bismuth wanders away for a moment with a thoughtful expression, but gets a bit too close to Sapphire, with Ruby standing protectively in front of her, with Bismuth backing up sheepishly with her hands raised. What adds to this is how she is more than twice Ruby's size.
  • There's a bit of Black Comedy where Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot see the amnesiac Spinel and start making jokes about how quickly she and they stopped trying to kill Steven after first meeting him.
Bismuth: I thought you said she was just trying to kill you?
    Lapis: Wow, quick turnaround.
Peridot: No kidding. It took me months to stop trying to kill Steven.
Bismuth: I say it took me a day? Day and a half?
Lapis: I'm still on the fence.
    [all laugh]
  • After Bismuth explains the purpose of the Rejuvenator, Peridot, who'd been messing with it a second ago (pointing it directly at her own face nonetheless!), exclaims that she could've lost all of her Character Development!
  • The group ends the song "Who We Are" definitively, only for Spinel try to start another verse. Steven tells her they're done singing.
  • When Steven calls the saw-device a "giant pizza-cutter", Peridot responds by saying that that is one of its functions.
  • Sapphire matter-of-factly narrates the chaos that ensues from an amnesiac Spinel playing with the oversized cutter. It's especially funny to hear her say the phrase "Hijinks will ensue" in the same completely deadpan voice.
  • During said hijinks, the Pizza Cutter of Doom goes rogue and starts cutting up the tower that Bismuth and others had been working on. Bismuth is absolutely beside herself the whole time.
Bismuth: My scaffolding! My precious scaffolding!
  • Once Garnet is reformed, due to her rejuvenated state, she's a complete ditz who's fascinated by everything she sees.
    • She's so bubbly and cheerful, just like a rejuvenated Spinel. They dance together, follow each other around...and then Garnet's distracted by a spork.
    • Upon seeing Steven return with the recovered Spinel, Pearl and Amethyst understandably freak out and go on the defense, but Garnet just cheerfully welcomes Spinel back and asks if she changed her hair.
  • A montage shows Steven searching all over town for Amethyst via Lion's portals. Onion is somehow somewhere in the background of every single place they go to. The only time Onion isn't present is when they actually find Amethyst...at his house.
    • Made even funnier by the fact that Onion doesn't appear to have aged AT ALL during the 2-year time-skip.
    • After leaving the Big Donut, Dewey is startled by Steven opening another portal and sticking his head back in to ask for some donuts.
  • At the beginning of "No Matter What", Amethyst holds up an abstract painting of herself. Steven, without missing a beat, takes it from her and turns it around. Since she'd been shapeshifting into a lot of the paintings, it's understandable that he wouldn't want to see her turn into that.
  • When Steven and Amethyst are cheesing the skee-ball game, Spinel gives a shocked look at the tickets pouring out of the machine. When the camera cuts back to them after cutting to Mr. Smiley, she's hugging them all and flees from the arcade with them still in her arms.
  • When Steven, Amethyst and Spinel flee the arcade, Amethyst (still a Blank Slate) stops in front of Ronaldo and shapeshifts into a duplicate of him. He immediately pulls out his phone to take a picture, but spends enough time inputting his overly-long PIN to unlock it that Amethyst is gone by the time he finishes, causing him to fall to his knees crying.
  • Steven ordering ACTUAL fries instead of the bits is somehow hilarious.
    • Steven having to eat Amethyst's fries for her.
    • When Amethyst first tries to eat a fry, she doesn't yet remember what eating is so she just lets it fall out of her mouth unchewed.
  • Greg assuming Pearl, Amethyst, and Connie were attacking him for not washing his hands.
  • During the time skip, it appears Peridot got new robonoids and proceeded to put pairs of Triangle Shades on all of them to match hers.
  • Peridot's Delayed Reaction to the restored Amethyst:
Peridot: [dramatic] Amethyst, get away from me. I can't stand to see you all vacant and bereft of personality.
Amethyst: [deadpan] Yo, I'm back, you dip.
Peridot: [faux-cheerful] Oh! Well, you're just in time for the end of the world!
  • Looking closely at Peridot's computer reveals that she was using it to watch Camp Pining Hearts and play SkiFree while the world was in the process of ending, and she paused it just before the yeti got her.
    • Even funnier is the fact that Peridot's scanner on the computer is a microwave. She starts the scan by pushing the popcorn button on it.
  • Then there's Amethyst's response to Greg when she returns to her real self.
    Greg: Steven! You found Amethyst!
Amethyst: [mimicking a robot] Who. Is. Amethyst?
Greg: Oh no, she's even worse!
    Amethyst: Naaah, I'm just goofin'!
    Greg: Too soon, Amethyst!
  • Sadie starts her concert with a two-part question...
Sadie: Who's here for the show?! [crowd cheers] Who's here cuz it's the end of the world?! [crowd cheers again]
    Lars: [offscreen] Wait, what?!
  • During the big concert, Steven and Greg fuse into "Steg", whose character design is hilariously over-the-top. Steg's got a muscular body (with eight-pack abs), four arms (which he uses to play a double-neck guitar), and a huge pompadour.
    • And upon his initial appearance, he literally rocks out so hard that he knocks Buck Dewey off the stage.
    • Also the fact that Steven and Greg's guitars fused as well.
    • We shouldn't be too surprised about the pompadour, considering what Steven 1 a.k.a. The Handsome One did with his hair.
    • There's also the fact that Steg is an overly-muscular, musically-themed, magical being with a massive pompadour, standing in a ridiculous sexy pose. Where else have we seen that before?
  • Once Spinel regains her memories, Steven tries to express sympathy regarding how his mother... handled things.
Steven: I can't believe Mom did that to you... [immediately looks aside] actually, I can totally believe it.
  • While it's said in a tragic context, the way Spinel describes her "old" self while holding onto amnesiac!Garnet can elicit a chuckle from the way her expression and tone suddenly changes at the last word.
Spinel: I'm a little flattered that you liked the old me. Innocent, loving...stupid!
  • Spinel gets pissed off at Steven for singing during their fight, prompting this bit of Self-Deprecation:
"JUST CAN IT, WON'TCHA?! You can't just make everything better by singing SOME STUPID SONG!"
    • Right before, Steven finishes his last verse with an "Oh, Crap!" look at Spinel's giant fist.
  • The trailer shows the Crystal Gems forming Alexandrite, something they tend to save for big fights since forming Alexandrite takes a toll on them. Naturally, one would assume she will be used against Spinel's injector or Spinel herself. So what does she do when she finally shows up? Gently picks up the residents of Beach City who were unable to evacuate in time, not taking to the fight at all!
  • As the Diamonds change their mind about staying on Earth, Steven reintroduces them to Spinel after all those millennia. Once they remembered that she was in the garden for an entire 6,000 years, Spinel brushes it off, saying that she can do it while standing on her head! Then Yellow Diamond, the more serious of the Diamonds, laughs it up almost instantly.
  • When Spinel performs the "Diamond Salute", she stretches out her rubber-hose arms and forms three diamond symbols.
    Spinel: My Diamon—ndsss.
  • The only way for Steven to fix the damage done by the injector is to kiss the ground to restore one small patch at a time. Unfortunately the destruction is spread throughout and several square miles beyond Beach City. The only thing the other Gems can do to help is "keep him hydrated".
Garnet: Hydration is very important for smooching.
    • It's worth noting that Garnet looks directly at Connie while saying that.

DVD Extras:

  • In the movie, Steven rolls up his sleeves before he starts kissing the ground to repair the Injector's damage. In the board animatic, Amethyst asked what the point of rolling his sleeves up is.
