Disabled In The Adaptation / With Pearl and Ruby Glowing

Go To

Several characters in With Pearl and Ruby Glowing, unlike canon, are disabled or have disorders, some as a result of people assaulting them. Some were even assaulted specifically because of their disabilities. Other disabilities are references to character designs from their source material or behavior shown in canon.

  • Several characters have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, usually a result of getting assaulted.
  • Elsa's ice powers become chronic depression, which she's had since she was six.
  • Pinocchio has genital agenesis, causing the Coachman to angrily say he's not a "real boy" in a reference to the movie, though the narrative makes it clear he is. Foulfellow was blinded when the Coachman poked him in the eyes with a lit cigar and Gideon lost the use of one leg to the Coachman's attack on him, as a reference to what happens to them in the original book (in which the Cat goes blind and the Fox goes lame).
  • Buster has ADD/ADHD, which made it easy for Ricky to gaslight him into thinking that he wasn't abusing him.
  • Vanellope has Tourette's Syndrome, causing her to twitch similar to her glitching in canon.
  • Ariel has spinal issues that leave her wheelchair-bound. After Ursula attacks her, she becomes mute from the resulting trauma.
  • Dr. Dillamond had his spine broken and throat cut by God's Will First, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and unable to speak.
  • Daffy is autistic, has ADD, and has narcissistic "fleas" that he picked up from his mother. Sylvester has purely obsessional OCD which gives him intrusive thoughts about hurting Tweety.
  • Baymax is autistic, which gives him flat, robotic mannerisms.
  • Not exactly a disability, but Remy has synaesthesia, causing him to experience tastes and smells as colours and sounds.
  • Both Wallace & Gromit are autistic; Gromit is also mute, which may or may not be connected to the autism.
  • Mew has become mute from trauma and can only say "Mew", a slurred version of her given name Mayu. Mewtwo is implied to have either Antisocial Personality Disorder or Reactive Attachment Disorder.
  • Howleen became blind when her assailant beat her and gave her brain damage. Frankie Stein has a prosthetic hand.
  • Baby Sinclair has congenital pain insensitivity and bites his fingers deeply since he can't feel it.
  • Mr. Mint has an unspecified learning disability that causes him to not realize the implications of a grown man hanging out with children.
  • The Xavier Institute becomes a facility for disabled kids. Scott Summers has glaucoma, Warren Worthington is taking Latuda and Prozac (which implies depression, manic depression, and/or schizophrenia), Jean Grey has an unspecified mental illness, one boy has seizures, and one girl (probably Anna Marie) has HIV.
  • Sherlock Holmes suffers brain damage that leaves him confined to a wheelchair with limited motor function, he can't speak anymore, and he suffers from Capgras Syndrome and can no longer recognise Watson. However, he can still do a Sherlock Scan.
  • Jimmy has Seasonal Affective Disorder and Heloise has some sort of inherited illness, according to Beezy, but it isn't stated what exactly she has.
  • Gus has Down Syndrome.
  • Penny Polendina lost all four of her limbs when the White Fang bombed the train she was in. She's also autistic, and was born with bad birth defects which were treated with organ and stem cell donations from her father.
  • Josh mentions being autistic, and Megan is implied to have some kind of cluster B disorder.
  • Mike, Celia, Pleakley, Bill Cipher, and DOR-15 each had a single eye due to them being monsters, an alien, an extradimensional demon, and a Cyber Cyclops, respectively, which in this universe translates to them each missing an eye. Similarly, Sapphire was born blind in one eye, and that eye was later cut out by the Ark, and Eyeball Ruby has only one eye.
  • Spencer Shay is autistic and has schizophrenia that causes him to hallucinate fire. He also mentions that Miss Ackerman has bipolar depression and Borderline Personality Disorder.
  • Viper has two prosthetic arms and Tigress is autistic.
  • Zuko is autistic due to several behaviors he displays in canon. It took until the 90s, when he was in his sixties, to be diagnosed since autism wasn't well-known before then.
  • Psycho's violent tendencies and dependency on his razor make it clear that there's something wrong with him, but it's unknown what exactly he has.
  • Mark Beaks is autistic, which could possibly be the reason he's behaving strangely towards Fenton.
  • Goo is autistic and has ADHD; kids her own age think she's weird because of it, but she gets along well with younger children and people older than her. Wilt has albinism along with his canon missing arm and blind eye.
  • Lionel, Toffee, Iroh II, and Mark were castrated/emasculated. In Part 4, Riley is rendered infertile after suffering a ruptured uterus.
  • Goofy has poor balance and messed up hand-eye coordination due to injuries he sustained in prison.
  • Perry became mute due to a field accident.
  • Trixie has Narcissistic Personality Disorder; Flim and Flam make it clear that it doesn't make her a bad person. The population of Equestria are prone to a Fictional Disability which makes it hard for them to conceive and carry boy babies to term, so there are a lot more women there. Dr. Hooves implies that he has NPD and mentions that his wife, likely Derpy, is autistic.
  • Julian and Callisto suffer from trauma-induced delusional disorders.
  • Soren got paralyzed from the neck down by Viren's enemies. Unlike canon, there's no magic to reverse it.
  • Sasha is implied to have Body Dysmorphic Disorder and/or an eating disorder.
  • Alejandro lost the use of his legs following a kick to the spine, while Scott was paralyzed from the neck down after the Ark workers threw him overboard and he was attacked by sharks during their escape.
  • Emily has Cotard's Syndrome.
  • Spinel has Borderline Personality Disorder. Ruby and Sapphire have achondroplasic dwarfism. Jasper mentions two of her sisters (heavily implied to be Amethyst and Carnelian) are little people and that a third (presumably Skinny Jasper) has some condition preventing weight gain, she and at least some of her siblings, possibly including them, are intersex (definitely including Lace Amethyst and Amethysts 8XJ, 8XK, and 8XL), and Lace Amethyst is blind. Malachite was Jasper and Lapis' child, born with sirenomelia and missing organs which resulted in her death within a week. Aquamarine has Dissociative Identity Disorder, with Bluebird Azurite being her alternate personality as a result of being molested by Eyeball Ruby, who is her biological mother in this setting.
  • Barley had to cut one of his feet off to escape from Bill's torture chamber and now wears a prosthetic foot.
  • Korra became a paraplegic after GWF broke her spine.
  • Sid was sent to Karlag because of his Waardenburg Syndrome, as well as being Koryo-saram. Momma Rex is implied to be autistic or something similar, as she's mute and has no control over her temper, proper treatment not being available at the time. Roger is implied to have some form of mental disability.
  • Fish has a breathing tube in his throat instead of wearing a scuba helmet.
  • Hi-Five Ghost has an amputated arm. Muscle Man is asthmatic, and he's trans but can't bind his chest because of it.
  • Vinnie has learning difficulties as a reference to him being The Ditz in canon. Buttercream has brain damage which causes twitching, and was neurodivergent before that.
  • Leni has some form of intellectual disability as opposed to just being your standard Dumb Blonde like in canon.
  • Max is neurodivergent as a child and damaged by drug abuse as an adult.
  • Mort has learning difficulties and stunted growth because Julien used numerous different drugs while pregnant with him in what was implied to be an attempt to induce miscarriage since he was too far along to legally abort.
  • Amalthea has Antisocial Personality Disorder, and Lir is implied to have it too. Haggard specifically targets victims with cluster B disorders of various types. Moondancer, Phillip, Trinket, Doctor Lollipop, and Unicorn have ASPD; Misty Brightdawn, Rainbow Unicorn, Lila, and Neighthan Rot have BPD; Charlie, Jeff, Shadowsong, Lord Unicorn, and Kleo have NPD; Sir Littlechin's targeted unicorn, Ubercorn, the Noah's Ark unicorn, Petunia, the other Phillip, and Alice's unicorn have HPD; the Scarborough Fair video's unicorn has an unspecified Cluster B condition. The severity and effects vary, but none of them have been violent, though some self-harm and Dr Lollipop dropped out of medical school when he realised he might be tempted to harm someone.
  • Ari is autistic.
  • Edric and Emira were born with a lot of health problems; both required heart surgery, Emira has Turner Syndrome, and Edric's dairy allergy briefly mentioned in canon is possibly lethal. The Collector is autistic and has clinical kleptomania, separation anxiety, and B-12 deficiency.
  • Hina and Korea are probably neurodivergent but haven't been diagnosed with anything.
  • Jocktopus has some form of learning disability, but his mother won't get an IEP for him.
  • Mirabel has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (as an analogy to her lacking magic in the movie) and her Chosen Person is Antonio. Beatriz (the name given to the character made from the original design of Isabela) also probably has it though may not have been diagnosed officially. Bruno has OCD and hyper-empathy, and Dolores is autistic with sensitivity to loud noises (as an analogy to her gift in the movie).
  • Mulmangcho has Intermittent Explosive Disorder. His foot was also cut off during his torture in North Korea, and the rest of the leg had to be surgically amputated due to gangrene. Geumsaegi is later revealed to suffer from chronic pain that makes him a part time wheelchair user due to spine damage caused when Oegwipali beat him with a broom, and his sister, Named by the Adaptation as Aeji, is deaf due to complications from chemotherapy.
  • Sloppy Joe was born deaf, Crushed Ice Chilla lost his feet to jiggers, and Mr. Yut uses an oxygen tank.
  • Xiao Ju is deaf in one ear after having been hit there by her father.
  • Peekablue has hyperthymesia, which isn't precisely classed a disability but is an unusual condition and causes him problems because it means the memory of his assault never fades.
  • Nezha and Bing are both autistic.

  • Eliza Thornberry has childhood schizophrenia, which causes her to hear animals talk.
  • Anissa and Jennifer Pierce have multiple sclerosis.
  • Bidoof's trainer is deaf and Bidoof has Sensory Processing Disorder.

  • Cleo went through early puberty at eight due to a hormone problem.
  • Ena is autistic and has bipolar disorder, which causes her to be a Mood-Swinger.
  • Gordon has a mental disorder which causes him to have pedophilic feelings towards children and thus tries to stay away from them as much as possible. Waffle is mentioned to have a few intellectual disabilities.
  • Inma is a human girl with gigantism who reaches seven feet tall before puberty.
  • Meilin Lee is intersex and grows facial hair, as an analogy to her red panda form from the movie.
  • Vinnie has Von Willebrand Syndrome. Max mentions in his victim impact statement that he teaches a special ed class, with the others disorders being mentioned in a later intermission chapter. Frankentyke has achondroplasia, Reggie has anxiety, Blanche has bipolar disorder, Duzer is in remission from melanoma, Cleofatra has a thyroid problem, J.P. Ghastly has pituitary gland problems and cyanosis, and Sid is autistic and has ADD. (Gill isn't disabled but is a drug user.)
  • Jin Zha has Oneiroid Syndrome while catatonic after being drugged and beaten.
  • Homestar wears prosthetic arms, as a reference to his character design not having any visible arms. What's Her Face and The Ugly One are both autistic. Strong Bad has facial disfigurement from chemical burns, leading to him wearing a mask all the time.
  • The surviving characters from both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory films all have eating disorders; 1973 Charlie has pica, 2005 Augustus has binge-eating disorder, 2005 Violet has anorexia, 2005 Verruca has ARFID, 2005 Mike has night-eating syndrome, and Dr. Wonka has orthorexia. Both Violets also have argyria.

  • Tim Wizard lost an arm in the Nepalese Civil War.
  • Molly is autistic and her special interests are clowns and dolls.
  • Susan Heffley has Capgras Syndrome as a result of head trauma from a car crash, leading to her believing Rodrick is an imposter. Meanwhile Rodrick has Fregoli Syndrome resulting from psychological trauma from being tortured by Susan, leading to him thinking that strangers are her in disguise.
  • Skipper Roberts has Swyer Syndrome, which means she has no ovaries. Rayna is autistic, Rayla has butterfly syndrome/epidermolysis bullosa, Coral is anorexic and suffers from Fish Odour Syndrome, and Anemone has severe tinnitus. The Guardian Fairies (who are a singular body here) and Mariposa both have DID; the Guardian Fairies are a system and Mariposa develops a Willa introject after the trauma of finding Willa's body. The original Willa had lupus. Catania recovered from physical injury requiring a wheelchair but kept the chair because now she has glass delusion. Barbie suffered a psychotic breakdown after Kelly's death and started to think she was actually her friend Amelia, and Anneliese mentions having had a similar delusion, implied to be that she thought she was Erika. Malucia has achondroplasic dwarfism with numerous symptoms, is autistic, has ADHD, celiac disease, delayed puberty, and Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. Emily Willows thinks she's autistic but her family can't afford an official diagnosis. Melody has mirror image agnosia. Annika has bipolar disorder with hallucination symptoms. Eric was born with only one arm.
  • Several characters from New Gods: Nezha Reborn (2021) and Raya and the Last Dragon are infected with the Fictional Disability DRUUN (Deposit-Rich Un-Uniform Neomineralisation), which is an incurable long-term disease and thus a disability in the same way AIDS is. The symptoms involve the formation of calcium stones in the blood vessels and organs.
  • Shan Yu is in a wheelchair after Smartass shot his knees out.
  • Both Wednesday Addams and Norman Normanmeyer Jr. are autistic.
  • Several of the Dalmatian kids have hearing aids and Dorothy lost her hearing entirely, inspired by the fact that about thirty percent of real Dalmatians are partly or fully deaf.
