Fusion Dimension

Academia

The Fusion Dimension's Duel Academia, who make it their life's mission of attacking other dimensions and sealing their victims into cards. A majority of people from this dimension are quite sadistic, treating their heinous actions as a "hunting game" and laughing about the destruction that they cause.

    Leo Akaba

Professor Leo Akaba/The Professor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leo_akaba.png

Ray's father, who three years ago went to the Fusion Dimension, where he became the Professor, the head of Academia. He is the instigator of the interdimensional war with the intent to conquer all dimensions and unite them under his command.

The Professor originally hailed from the Original Dimension where his technology gave Duel Monsters the ability to interact with reality itself, as well as invoking in them actual feelings. This backfired spectacularly when he inadvertently helped create the "Demonic Duelist" known as Zarc and the fusion of all his dragons... with his daughter Ray joining him as they declared war on humanity.

Thus the entire reason for starting the war in the first place is his ill-guided attempt to "unite" the dimensions once again and revive his daughter Ray, who he believes Zarc "corrupted" into joining him.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Compare to the canon series, this version of Leo was quite neglectful of Ray and was very controlling of her prior to the Original Dimension's destruction, adding another layer to his already questionable sanity and delusion.
    • His abandonment of Himika and Reiji is even worse here, considering that, unlike canon, Himika is the mother of both his children, meaning the Parental Favoritism of Ray started long before the dimensional split.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Zarc, and the feeling is very mutual.
  • Archnemesis Dad: To both Ray and Reiji.
  • Badass Bookworm: He's not only a multi-disciplinary scientist but is capable of running a military school as its headmaster.
  • Bald of Evil: He's completely bald in the current time, and is willing to launch an unprovoked war against the other Dimensions to resurrect a child who simply doesn't exist beyond his own delusion.
  • Believing Their Own Lies:
    • He never approved of Zarc being friends with his "perfect daughter", seeing the former as a bad influence on Ray, never mind that his views of Ray are far from who she actually is. Even in the present time, he's fully convinced that Ray was brainwashed by Zarc. Needless to say that Ray finds his delusions disgusting.
    • See Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist below.
  • Control Freak: He was this to his daughter in the Original Dimension, and it still sticks up to this day. A flashback in Chapter 19 showed he even used Reiji, Ray's baby brother, as an excuse to keep her from hanging out with Zarc and her friends.
  • The Corrupter: Ever since he established control in the Fusion Dimension, he indoctrinate most of Duel Academia's students into genocidal soldiers and encouraged Yuri into the monster he's well known to be at the beginning of the story. This makes his grudge against Zarc for supposedly "brainwashing" his daughter all the more ironic.
  • Dramatic Irony: The entire plot of the story can all be traced back to his own parental flaws, and is only going to be causing more problems for him in the long term.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: For all of his flaws, all the things he does is to attempt to be reunited with his daughter, Ray, after her soul was split across the four dimensions. This is deconstructed, however, as it doesn't make him a sympathetic Papa Wolf, but an outright delusional Abusive Parent who only loves the "version" of Ray in his head, and the fact that he's getting innocent people in the crossfire of his extreme actions.
  • Hypocrite: He has a personal grudge against Zarc for not only destroying the Original Dimension but is also fully convinced that the latter brainwashed his beloved daughter into becoming a villain. Yet, he's perfectly fine with waging an unprovoked interdimensional war, spent years indoctrinating child soldiers into doing his dirty work, and is willing to have the Doktor used the Fusion Parasites to brainwash his daughter's four reincarnations/fragments, nevermind of what potential harm it could do to their minds as long as their bodies are physically intact.
  • Irony:
    • His neglectfulness and controlling nature for Ray, who wants nothing to do with him anymore, and Parental Abandonment of Reiji, has led to both children plotting against him. Which is rightfully lampshaded by Serena in her personal chapter.
    • If you have already read the hypocrisy of his actions above, then you can already tell that not only does the actions he took makes him no different from Zarc, but also Not So Similar as Leo is far worse for his delusional and controlling behavior.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: He currently sits at his throne in the Fusion Dimension while sending out Duel Soldiers to invade the dimensions.
  • Not So Similar:
    • Ironically, he's this to Zarc. While both of them do care and love Ray and are willing to do whatever means necessary to be with her, Leo only cares about his own delusional view of his "perfect daughter" whereas Zarc accepts Ray for all her flaws and strengths. While both of them committed evil actions for their own selfish purposes, Leo rationalized them as being well-intentional (when it's really not), where Zarc has no such delusions.
    • To Shun Kurosaki in the canon anime's English Dub. From there, Shun realizes that both of them committed morally unconscious acts in order to get back a family member that they loved and lost; Shun for Ruri and Leo for Ray. Furthermore, Leo's Control Freak and overprotective tendencies here are quite reminiscent of Shun's own controlling and protective behavior for Ruri in the anime. However, that's where the similarity ends here in the fic, as, unlike Leo's obliviousness and shadow love, Shun genuinely loves Ruri and is capable of recognizing her for her own character and choices and doesn't prevent her from having a romantic relationship with Yuto before a disastrous event, who is his best friend and the one other person in his life who he explicitly trusts. In fact, this crucial difference is possibly another reason why Ray recruited Shun as her knight and agent besides his devotion to his sister.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He fancies himself a Well-Intentioned Extremist, but his actions are purely selfish and delusional. He refuses to accept the Original Dimension is gone and considers the current dimensions to be nothing more than a mistake, and is perfectly willing to launch an interdimensional war, traumatizing numerous people and uplifting Ray's fragments from their own lives in the process, under the rationale it will be worth it once the Arc Area Project is complete. He also refuses to see any of Zarc or Ray's fragments as their own individuals, and is perfectly content trying to kill Zarc's fragments just to stop his rebirth, and just as content with ruining the lives of Ray's Fragments and their loved ones just to undo his daughter's own "alleged" brainwashing from Zarc.
  • Obliviously Evil: Although he does acknowledge the pain, suffering, and despair he's causing throughout the Four Dimensions, Leo still commits such atrocities due to his delusional belief that it's actually both beneficial and meaningless by the end when he merged all the worlds into "one", not helping the fact that he believes that everyones' existence, besides himself, Ray, and Zarc are not truly real as they only exist as "mistakes" due to the fracturing of the Original Dimension.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: If you haven't read the long list from the canon series' page, then you'll know that'll it be too long to list here.
  • Parental Neglect: Deconstructed. Leo and his wife were never really around for his daughter, Ray, and if so, they gave her very little personal freedom. This is what leads to Ray leaning onto Zarc for support, and vice versa as Birds of a Feather, and ended up with her joining Zarc into laying waste upon humanity for their bloodlust.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Leo Akaba only cares about resurrecting his "perfect daughter" while disregarding her four counterparts as merely "sacrifices", and believing that Ray was brainwashed by Zarc into joining him in the first place. To put it simply, Ray is disgusted by this delusion and had renounced Leo as her father long ago.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • His research to enhance Real Solid Vision, which allowed Zarc and Ray to summon and then fuse with their monsters, leading to the end of the original world.
    • On that note, his Parental Neglect of Ray is part of the reason she even joined Zarc in the first place.
    • Sending Yuri to kidnap Ray's incarnations, bringing the girls together which jump-starts the plot.
    • He started the Dimensional War because of his unthinking selfishness, driving Yuto, Ruri, and Shun to the arms of Zarc and Ray very easily.

    The Doktor

The Doktor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_doktor.png

The Doktor is one of The Professor's closest aides. He is responsible for creating the Fusion Parasites and is intending to use them to control Yuzu, Serena, Rin, and Ruri.

    Obelisk Force

Obelisk Force

Archetype: Ancient Gear

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/obelisk_force_1.png

The Obelisk Force is an elite group of Duel Soldiers of Academia.

They often duel in tag, using the advantages and loopholes of the Battle Royale Mode, and take down their opponents with teamwork and burn damage. All of them seem to run Ancient Gear decks, particularly based on the Ancient Gear Hunting Hound.

  • Adaptation Explanation Extrication: None of their duels are written onscreen in the fic, as Word of God stated that she doesn't know how to write a duel in the Battle Royale format since it doesn't have any clear rules, and a duel with that magnitude needs far more set up. However, the writer has made her own rules and will be using them in a future chapter.
  • Adaptational Karma: They're hit with this in the fic in a much more Bloodier and Gorier fashion for their transgressions.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Granted, their canon counterparts aren't much better, but could be somewhat effective in large numbers. Here, they're pretty much the designated Butt-Monkey/The Chew Toy for Ray and Zarc's counterparts in the Xyz Dimension, being consistently dismembered or otherwise maimed in their quest for vengeance.
  • Always Male: So far, the group doesn't seem to have any female members.
  • Ancient Grome/Clock Punk: Like many other Duel Soldiers, they use cards such as Ancient Gear Knight and Ancient Gear Hunting Hound.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Once The Resistance manages to turn the tides against them, it's mentioned that many of the Obelisk Force lost a limb or two when falling into the various explosions caused by the trap-inducing effects.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: They won't hesitate to beg their "prey" for their lives in case they actually lose a duel. If anything, it only makes their own defeat and death more cathartic In-Universe.
  • Beg the Dog: If they can't get any more pathetic and disgusting, they will beg their own prey for their own lives if they were to actually lose against them in a duel.
  • Blood Knight: Subverted. They'll revel in a good fight against the "Xyz Scum" if only to make their hunting games more enjoyable once they'll defeat and card them as their fallen prey begs for mercy. But when things go south and they actually lose the duel, they won't hesitate to run away in fear or beg their prey for mercy.
  • The Bully: All of them are like this.
  • Bullying a Dragon: As seen in their off-screen 3-to-1 duels against Yuri and Ruri in chapters 10 and 13 respectively. It doesn't end well for them either way.
  • Butt-Monkey: It can't be more ironic for them to be designated as this for their so-called "elite" status.
  • Color Coded For Y Our Convenience: Their masks have gems of different colors set in them, which is generally the only way to tell them apart. Doesn't make too much of a difference because they're all basically interchangeable, to begin with, but it does make their duels easier to follow.
  • Combat Pragmatists: They duel in Battle Royale Mode rather than in regular 1-on-1 duels. Since Battle Royales don't have specific rules, they attack their opponents before they even get their first turn.
  • Cyber Cyclops: Chaos Ancient Gear Giant.
  • Dirty Coward: What most, if not, all of them are deep down. They're fine with attacking in numbers and acting all smug while in a position of being a predator. Yet, when they lose in spite of having those advantages, they'll either run away in fear or beg for mercy.
  • Elite Mooks: Played With. They are the highest-ranking students of Duel Academia, like the lore of GX, and their invasion of the Xyz Dimension involves them defeating and carding many duelists and civilians alike. However, they're only truly a threat due to their strength in numbers, overreliance on the Battle Royale Mode, having the initial advantage of Attack! Attack! Attack!. Once those tactics are no longer valid and they end up losing a duel, they either run away in fear or beg for mercy.
  • For the Evulz: Aside from their indoctrination from Academia, the fact that they enjoy hunting and carding their prey regardless if they're duelists or not shows their depravity.
  • Humongous Mecha: They have a Chaos Ancient Gear Giant to use in their decks.
  • Jerkass: So far, every single one of them.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Their true faces are all hidden underneath their Obeliskesque masks and are Sadists who love to hunt and card their prey.
  • Mooks: All of them wearing the same uniforms, wear almost the same masks, all share the same personality, and all of them seem to run Antique Gear decks. Unfortunately, they are also Elite Mooks.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: They're the highest-ranking students of their home dimension, and with their usage of the Battle Royale Mode, Zerg Rush, and Ancient Gear monsters, they're a force to be reckoned against the unaware dimensions that they're invading. However, since their decks are the equivalent of modified real-life Structure Decks, they're in trouble against opponents who use monsters with powerful effects that can deal against multiple enemies or with cards that are tailored to cripple their playstyles.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The red lenses of their masks lend themselves to this effect.
  • Sadist: They feel pleasure from hurting and carding people.
  • Smug Smiler: All the time.
  • Smug Super: Zigzagged with Smug Snake. They're technically Elite Mooks since they're actually good Duelists by the standards of their home dimension, and have been shown to be a terrifying force when invading the Xyz Dimension. However, they're only as good as they are due to having the initial advantage of a preemptive strike and through the abuse of the Battle Royale format. Once the protagonists resort to Outside-the-Box Tactics or cards that can deal with multiple opponents, then that's when the Obelisk Force will be screwed as they're limited to Crippling Overspecialization.
  • Spoiled Brat: While Ruri describes all of the Academia Duel Soldiers as this, the Obelisk Force is more guilty of this trope, if one knew of how the Obelisk Blue students from GX are mostly comprised of Jerkass rich kids and female students regardless of their initial Duel performances (as the Obelisk Blue Dorm is the only student residential area that has working plumbing for female students).
  • The Worf Effect: To show just how much more powerful and dangerous Ray and Zarc's reincarnations have become, the Obelisk Force is pretty much used as a measuring tool.
  • Zerg Rush: Their preferred tactic to duel is by using the Battle Royale Format to overwhelm their opponents, whether it'll be to card their prey in the Xyz Dimension or to bully lesser students in Academia. Deconstructed as this also falls into Crippling Overspecialization, as they can get blindsided by an opponent who uses effects that could take down multiple monsters in a single turn.

    Sora Shiun'in

Sora Shiun'in

Archetype: Fluffal, Frightfur

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiuninsorafull1812626.jpg

A Duelist from the Fusion Dimension and an elite student of Duel Academia. He's assigned by Leo Akaba to assist Serena and Yuri in capturing a "certain target" in the Standard Dimension. He uses his looks to charm the pants off everyone he meets and constantly seems to know more than he lets on, but shows a hidden cunning side to his personality.

Sora runs a Fluffal Deck, which is based on cutesy monsters fusing with a certain Edge Imp monsters to become horrifying mash-up creatures, the Frightfurs.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: His mentor-and-mentee relationship with Yuzu is Adapted Out due to the latter already knowing Fusion.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He and Serena save Yuya from being assaulted by Gen and his goons near the end of chapter 11.
  • Cute and Psycho: He has the looks of a young cute boy, but is capable of Blood Lust for violent dueling.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He doesn't know the true identity of the target that he's to assist in capturing (i.e. Yuzu), and incorrectly believes that it's Reiji due to Serena's accidental implication. Justified because of his position, along with the Arc Project being a top-secret to anyone other than The Professor, The Doktor, Serena, and Yuri.

    Alexis Rhodes
See her page in the Original Dimension.

    Atticus Rhodes

Archetype: Red-Eyes (A variation)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/282ec91866c3dea3fbcf3d979e659eb5.jpg

An Alternate Self of Atticus Rhodes that appeared in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. He is a Duelist from the Fusion Dimension and a former elite student of Academia. After learning Academia's evil goals, Atticus betrays them for good and currently works for Yusho to defeat them and stop the war for good. He uses a Red Eyes Deck. Due to his sister being one of the En Card user who defeated Ray and Zarc, Atticus is revealed to be one of the survivors of Original Dimension, who lost his memories like all the survivors and was sent to Fusion once the Dimensions were split into four.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He made his debut by saving his sister from getting carded by Yuri.
  • Composite Character: His role is very similar to Asuka's canon ARC-V counterpart.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His Red Eyes are DARK Attribute monsters, but like his sister, Atticus is one of the most morally pure characters in the story as he wanted to help people, and not let Academia hurt the ones in his care. He had even run away when he found out the true purpose of Academia and how the Obelisk Force was harming others in Heartland.
  • Defector from Decadence: He and his sister Alexis used to be students of Academia, but both of them defected after learning their evil ambition, which caused him to go rouge in disgust.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He could still be an Academia student if it weren't for said school being rotten to the core and going on a carding spree in Heartland.
  • Number Two: He becomes Alexis' right hand man after defecting from Academia.
