The Dragon Boys

    open/close all folders

    All four
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_boys.jpg
  • A Boy and His X: All of the Dragon Boys have this dynamic with their respective ace monsters.
  • Adaptational Badass: Like with the Siren Girls, each of the Dragon Boys are much stronger in the fic, as a Duelist and gaining powers of a Reality Warper.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Just as the other three of the Siren Girls made their early appearance, Yuri, Yugo, and Yuto also get an early on-screen appearance in the fic.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the canon anime, Yuya, Yugo, and Yuto were the only three of the four counterparts who rejected Zarc's influence, contrasting Yuri who embraces his inner darkness. Here, due to Zarc being kinder, all of them accepted Zarc's power and agreed to help revive him and Ray.
  • Amazon Chaser: Although it's platonic on Yuri's end, the rest of them have this attraction for their respective Siren Girl.
  • Anti-Hero: It would be generous to say that all of them is this due to their connection to Zarc, but besides Yuri, who's more of a Card-Carrying Villain.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Being the four Living Macguffins of Zarc Pendragon, they technically function as this like the canon anime.
  • Casual Kink: It is strongly implied that all the boys have it to a degree, specifically a praise Kink, (Although nothing has been explored yet) it is very clear that the Yu-boys would happily melt if their significant others gave them praise and especially if they called them a variation of "Good Boy". Yugo is very obvious in this, while Yuto has confessed to Ruri that he loved it when she called him a good boy in his drunken haze in chapter 20. Yuya's face turned red and was clearly turned on when Yuzu called him that in chapter 23. While Yuri does not have any clear sexual urges, it's clear he likes to be praised by Ray and Zarc.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Besides Yuya, who was raised by Yusho and Yoko Sakaki, all of them don't have any biological parents. Which is justified due to their true nature in a younger existing world.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. In the canon anime, Yuya is The Hero, Yuto and Yugo are supporting characters, and Yuri is a major antagonist. Here, they're the Deuteragonists to their respective Siren Girl.
  • Draconic Humanoid: As they slowly learn and master their powers through Zarc, they're capable of manifesting their dragon heritage.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Yuri, Yugo, and Yuto gain the last name of Pendragon in chapter 22. Whether or not Yuya takes the name himself over Sasaki is up for air.
  • Only One Name: Except for Yuya, the other three don't have last names. This later gets subverted in chapter 22.
  • Reincarnation: They're this to Zarc Pendragon of the Original Dimension.
  • Relationship Upgrade: They become much closer to their respective Siren Girls; Yuya and Yugo are now dating Yuzu and Rin respectively, Yuto and Ruri are more open about their relationship, and Yuri and Serena are becoming Platonic Life-Partners.
  • Rotating Protagonist: Rotating Deuteragonist as whichever chapter focuses on a particular Siren Girl, expect them to be the main secondary character.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: The Siren Girls are the only people that the Dragon Boys would feel strong romantic/platonic feelings for, and vice-versa. Although they are capable of loving other people, as Yuto demonstrated with Shun.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Unlike canon, the Dragon Boys won't stay merged together into Zarc, and neither exist as a part of Yuya Sasaki from the ending of the anime.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: All of them are this to their respective Siren Girls, and vice versa.
  • Twin Telepathy: When awakening Zarc's inner darkness, they can mentally communicate with each other.
  • Uniqueness Value: Their ace monsters are one-of-a-kind.

    Yuya Sakaki

Yuya Sakaki

Archetype: Performapal/Odd-Eyes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakaki_yuya.jpg

Yuzu's childhood friend and the son of You Show Duel School's founder. He aspires to become an Entertainment Duelist and bring laughter to people through his duels as his father did before him, at least before Yusho's mysterious disappearance three years ago.

He owns a good-luck charm pendant his father gave him when he was younger, which mysteriously glows during his televised exhibition match against Strong Ishijima. This unlocks the power of an entirely new Summoning method, Pendulum Summoning.

He uses a Performapal Deck, which features animals in costumes that focus on altering the ATK and DEF of monsters; he later starts incorporating the Odd-Eyes archetype. His ace is his Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, one of the four Dimensional Dragons.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: Since Joey and his friends are in this fic, they keep him from becoming too much of a Stepford Smiler. Also, his No Guy Wants an Amazon attitude towards Yuzu from canon is inverted thanks to his own origin's love and attraction for Yuzu's origin and vice-versa.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Many of his Extra Deck Monsters that would've made their appearance in the anime shows up much earlier in the fic due to Yuya's Character Development and Took a Level in Badass.
    • Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon made its appearance in his duel against Yuzu in chapter 11, where the events took place after Yuya's duel against Strong Ishijima.
    • Brave-Eyes Pendulum Dragon made its appearance in his duel against Reiji in chapter 23, where the events took place in the finale of the "LDS vs You Show" Arc.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Due to his dad disappearing, nearly every kid his age mocked him. This soon becomes subverted after his Duel against Strong Ishijima.
  • Bully Magnet: Due to his father's disappearance, Yuya gets a lot of flak for being the "son of a coward", leading to many people harassing him over the years. This type of harassment can lead to minor verbal insults at best and getting physically assaulted at worst.
  • Expy: Of Pre-Character Development Yugi Muto, specifically his status as a Bully Magnet and his bond with Joey. Ironically, Yugi himself does exist in the fic but is already a confident and skilled Duelist himself.
  • Heroic BSoD: Played for Laughs. When Yuzu gives him a Big Damn Kiss in chapter 9, his brain short circuits as he wonders if he's dreaming at that point.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Of the Loser Son of Loser Dad variety. Due to the disappearance of Yusho at the time where he was scheduled for an important Duel against Strong Ishijima, everyone derides the man as a coward, leading to Yuya being scorned as such from his relation to Yusho 3 years prior to the story. However, this starts to become downplayed after his victory against Strong Ishijima and exposure of the Pendulum Monsters, and eventually a subversion.
  • Hot-Blooded: He can get very passionate at times when performing.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Decides to start training and experimenting with Pendulum monsters sooner than in canon and doesn't take as much time to learn how to set a Pendulum Scale, to the point that he can beat Yuzu — who just learned Fusion and Xyz summoning — in a duel.
    • Furthermore, he's also capable of Fusion Summoning during their duel, with Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon in the mix.
    • In his duel against Sora, he uses Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon, which never made an appearance in the anime.
    • He fares much better against Reiji during the finale of the fic's "LDS vs You Show" Arc, even bringing out Brave-Eyes Pendulum Dragon far earlier than its debut in episode 110.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Yuya and Yuzu became a couple after the former's victory over Strong Ishijima.

    Yuri Pendragon

Yuri Pendragon

Archetype: Predaplants

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuri_64.jpg

A member of Academia under the direct command of Professor Leo Akaba. He is Yuya's Fusion Dimensional Counterpart, due to them sharing the same face and originally being of one entity, "Zarc".

He was sent by the Professor to capture Yuzu Hiragi. However, doing so awakened Ray in Yuzu and the other Siren Girls made them aware as to what Akaba is planning for them and empowered them (along with Yuri becoming an ally with Ray).

He utilizes the Predaplants, a legion of DARK Plant-type monsters that can swarm the field, impairs and ensnares opponents with their effects, and sets up ideal conditions for his ace monster, Starving Venom Fusion Dragon.

  • The Ace: He's known to be the strongest and smartest student in Duel Academia, and he's capable of defeating three Obelisk Blue students on his own, simultaneously.
  • Achilles' Heel: While Starving Venom Fusion Dragon is a powerful card in his own right (especially in the anime), there're a number of ways to essentially cripple Yuri's ace monster, as seen in the remake of the first chapter.
    • Starving Venom's floating effectnote  only works if he gets destroyed, meaning that if he were to be banished or bounce from the field, it won't activate. This causes Yuri to be shocked as Yuzu (actually Ray in control) uses Lulling Siren Countess Eris' effect to bounce Starving Venom back into the Extra Deck to avoid his floating effect since there's no way she should know about it due to his ace monster being one-of-a-kind.
    • The summoning conditions for his dragon needs the 2 fusion materials to be of DARK Attribute, along with the added bonus to its effect if the materials are used as they're on the field. When Yuri tries to use "Predaprime Fusion" to summon back Starving Venom Fusion Dragon using a monster on both Yuzu and his own field, the former prevents this by chaining "Siren Song", allowing her to change the Attributes on Yuri's monsters to LIGHT, rendering the activation for Predaprime Fusion useless and disrupting his playstyle in the end.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: He was the last Dragon Boy to make an onscreen appearance in the anime, but the fic introduces him in the very first chapter.
  • Agent Peacock: A flashy dresser and a dangerous duelist.
  • Alleged Lookalikes: Although Yuzu first mistakes him for Yuya, she quickly deduced that he isn't the latter.
  • Badass Cape: A short red one resembling Yuya's coat.
  • Badass Long Coat: He wears also a coat since his cape isn't long enough.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me:
    • The reason why he's so loyal to Leo Akaba is due to the latter acknowledging him as everyone else is too afraid to interact with him. This loyalty later goes away when learning of what he truly was to The Professor from Zarc.
    • Ray's familial kindness and love for Yuri is what made him turn to help her and Zarc to revive in the first place.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Even his basic speaking is theatrical and rather silly. Make no mistake, he's just as capable of switching to sadistic and deadly serious.
  • Blood Knight: He's always up for a good duel, especially if it means he could test his strength against others with his ace monster.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He's much more bloodthirsty and sadistic compare to his counterparts and is more willing to embrace this status.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • He does this to Yuzu in the very first chapter. He used a Fusion Spell Card to fuse two of her own monsters to Fusion Summon a monster of his own, and would have defeated her if it weren't for Ray taking control to invert this on him.
    • He does this to three Obelisk Blue students off-screen in chapter 10.
  • Dark Is Evil: His Predaplants and Starving Venom Fusion Dragon are all DARK Attribute, and he's the only one of his counterparts to be a Card-Carrying Villain, compared to them being Anti-Heroes at best and being Anti-Villains at worse.
  • Defector from Decadence: He secretly defects Leo and Academia to help Ray and Zarc to revive them, while serving as a Reverse Mole.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: It's even in his ace monster's name. Despite his prideful nature and his seeming distaste for affection, Yuri craves for it deep down. It's why he was incredibly loyal to Leo Akaba as a child as the man encouraged his talent and gave him a purpose whereas everyone else only showed him fear and kept their distance from him. Then, when feeling the affection given to him by Ray for the first time along with learning how Leo Akaba truly feels about him, Yuri defected from the man and Duel Academia altogether.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He really didn't expect Yuzu/Ray to turn the tables against him in their duel.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • In stark contrast to his canon counterpart, he's utterly disgusted by The Professor's plans to control Ray and her counterparts via parasites.
    • He really has a low opinion of idiotic Duelists who would automatically attack his own monsters while overlooking the fact that it could and would be a bad idea, regardless of who they are. In fact, Yuto finds this comment quite surprising as the thought of any Academia soldier would admit that one of their own is an idiot (even if it was somebody they don't like), which would subtly imply that an "Xyz scum" is better.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: He judges people based on their strengths and weaknesses as a Duelist, and probably on anything that would require martial and physical strength. In fact, things like race, gender, cultural upbringing, the method of the summoning mechanic, or even sexual orientation are non-factors to him.
  • The Evil Prince: Due to being a reincarnation of a demonic draconic god-king, Yuri is this.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Played With. While Yuri is a masculine name in Russian, in Japanese, it's typically a feminine name. And if you know what's good for you, you better not point it out to the guy as a taunt or an insult.
  • Hidden Depths:
  • Instant Expert: Unlike his other counterparts, Yuri was able to use Zarc's power very quickly in comparison, since his own natural Blood Lust helps amplify the inherent negativity of Dark Magic.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: He speaks much more politely than his counterparts, wears pink in his clothing, and is a Caring Gardener in his spare time.
  • Obliviously Evil: He may be on the protagonists' side, but Yuri's duel against Yuto, all while being his usual self, didn't really make a good first impression as an ally. It took a stern scolding from Zarc to make him see what he had messed up.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Starving Venom Fusion Dragon is a Dragon-Type monster. It's a kind of humanoid dragon that has a snake-like appearance and plant-like characteristics.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Serena.
  • Power Copying: Starving Venom can not only gain the total ATK of all special summoned monsters that the opponent controls (if Fusion Summon with materials that are on the field) but can also negate the effects of a Level 5 or higher monster to copy the name and effects as well.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His hair color, eye color, uniform, and ace monster is all purple in color, and he's acknowledged as one of the strongest Duelists in Duel Academia along with everyone else fearing him as The Dreaded.
  • Relationship Upgrade: A platonic example with Serena.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Not from him, but the names of his Predaplant Monsters are littered with these, much to Azure's frustration when writing chapter 18.
  • Sissy Villain: Yuri tends to dress in a rather flashy outfit, speaks very politely, has flamboyant mannerisms, is a Caring Gardener (which is traditionally seen as an unmasculine hobby) and has a Gender-Blender Namenote .
  • Smug Smiler: This is usually his default expression, and not unjustified due to his strength as a Duelist. Any time he stops doing that is usually out of annoyance, genuine anger, or rarely, an actual smile.
  • Sore Loser: Played with. While he did not take his very first loss against Yuzu (Ray) well, he's unsure whether to scream or laugh when dealing with an unknown deck for the first time.
  • Sweet Tooth: Chapter 21 reveals that Yuri has this.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Being the reincarnation of Zarc and inheriting his sadism, he's the only counterpart who's a Card-Carrying Villain while Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri are Anti-Heroes at best.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Somewhat... but he becomes much kinder in his interactions with Ray and Serena.
  • Troll: He loves to do this. Zarc even warns Yuto about this aspect of him just to give him the heads-up before heading to the Standard Dimension with Ruri and Shun.
    • In chapter 18, Yuri does this constantly to Yuto throughout their duel in an attempt to "help" him utilized the darkness more effectively. But deconstructed as his usual attitude had only gotten him on the Xyz Trio's bad side, leading to Zarc reprimanding Yuri for this, telling him that he now has a lot of work to do in order to regain their trust.
  • Undying Loyalty:
    • He had this for Leo Akaba, at first since the man was the only one who acknowledged him whereas everyone else feared him. That being said, he would've later grown out of this anyway due to Zarc's influence.
    • He later gains this for Ray and her counterparts, along with Zarc and his counterparts as well.

    Yugo Pendragon

Yugo Pendragon

Archetype: Speedroid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1e144333d2b6075d0f8d366bf8e1a9de.jpg

Rin's childhood friend who hails from the Synchro Dimension and grew up with Rin as a part of the "Commons" in the slums of Neo Domino City.

He uses a deck with Speedroids, Wind-Machine Type Monsters that resemble toys or are references to games, primarily those centering on dice. Yugo also relies on luck as a powerful factor in his duel style and all his monsters lead up to supporting his ace monster, Clear Wing Synchro Dragon.

  • Act of True Love: His deep love and devotion to Rin are what drive most of his actions to become stronger, along with gaining new upgrades to his deck.
    • During Rin's duel with Frank, it was Yugo's voice that first began to snap Rin out of her trance, his voice and their connection are basically like a prince kissing the sleeping princess to wake her up, something Randsborg himself highlights.
  • All Men Are Perverts: In comparison to his counterparts' relationships with their respective Siren Girl, Yugo is easily the most perverted in his interactions and relationship with Rin, and vice-versa on her end. It's pretty much guaranteed that he'll sneak peeks, and after getting into a relationship with Rin, blatantly gaze at whatever sexy outfits she'll wear to entice him, along with him getting quite frisky whenever he and Rin make out.
  • Amazon Chaser: If there is one thing we know for sure is that Rin is no meek girl, in fact, she would easily dropkick and punch anyone who annoys her, her anger is terrifying and Yugo absolutely is head over heels in love with her and admires that power, in fact, it turns him on when he sees Rin demonstrating how strong she is, physically, mentally and mystically.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Arrives just as Professor Frank as Rin in his clutches, giving her the mental strength to kick him out.
  • Bite of Affection: As a dragon guided by his instinct at that moment, Yugo had the great urge to bite Rin and claim her as his, to show his love and protection of her as well as possessiveness, in his mind Rin becoming his treasure to hoard.
  • Blow You Away: He's described by Rin as "like the wind", and his ace monster and Speedroid deck is WIND Attribute.
  • Casual Kink: Implied to have this as he really isn't bothered being on the receiving end of Rin's physical abuse whenever she gets annoyed by him prior to the fic. Even after Rin undergoes a level of kindness, he gets more aroused by her constant sexual aggression.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Yeah, it's no secret how much of a Covert Pervert Yugo is for Rin, especially after they start dating. But he's capable of not letting his desires for her go too far or doing something that Rin isn't yet comfortable with.
  • Covert Pervert: He has this bad for Rin whenever he lets his eyes roam towards the exposed parts of her clothing.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Squees at Akiza's White Rose and Red Rose Dragons, wishing to just take him home and spoil them rotten.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: His bond with Rin on a whole is notably filled with analogies for romantic couples.
    • In chapter 16, Yugo's enraged Was It All a Lie? reaction to believing that Rin doesn't care for him romantically and that everything was an attempt to revive Zarc is reminiscent of someone finding out that their romantic partner was secretly cheating on them with someone else.
    • In the very same chapter after the two reconciled, Yugo bit Rin's shoulder, which according to Zarc it was a natural thing for a dragon to claim his loved ones in such a way. Rin let it happen, placing her full trust in Yugo, and in response, she let out a huge burst of ice spikes as she gasped in pleasure. Needless to say that that moment was as close to a show of PG-13 sex.
    • In chapter 24, their relationship and interactions have now reached the point of a couple undergoing a wedding engagement. Especially the scene where Yugo sat Rin down and showed her the ring he bought for her and her heartwarming tearful reaction to that gesture; never mind the evolution of Clear Wing Synchro Dragon to Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon by using Windwitch Snow Bell as the Tuner Monster.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Does this a lot whenever Rin dresses provocatively, which is exactly what she aimed for.
  • Expy: In the Synchro Dimension side of the fic, he fills the role of Leo (not Leo Akaba) from 5Ds. Having a close familial relationship with a girl his age (plus the romance and the fact that he and Rin aren't blood-related) along with a sibling-like relationship with Akiza, and having a deck made up of toy-theme monsters and a Level 7 Synchro Monster as his ace.
  • Hot-Blooded: To a greater extent than Yuya, as Yugo tends to listen to his heart rather than use his head at times.
  • Light Is Good: His Duel Runner uniform and ace monster is white, and is overall a kind person.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In a memorable scene in chapter 16, he gives a brutal What the Hell, Hero? to Rin when learning about his role in Zarc's revival, showing that despite being able to brush off Rin's previous abuse due to Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male, and among other things, her perceived betrayal is just too much for him.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Much to his delight, he gets his feelings returned by Rin and became a couple.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Rin is the only person Yugo has shown romantic and sexual feelings for, as seen in this little tidbit.
Rin: Yugo, do you think it's possible you might be bi or maybe pan?
Yugo: I don't know, I'm only really attracted to you
Rin: Well, try to imagine dating a guy
    Yugo: But I'm dating you
Rin: Okay then, imagine we weren't dating, and-
    Yugo: I'd be sad :(
  • Shared Family Quirks: Apparently, he shares Zarc's more daring aspects of his personality and later gains a habit of biting the girl he loves to show his love and possessiveness.
  • Was It All a Lie?: When Rin tells him the truth of their origins, he didn't take it well due to the insulation that the girl he loves didn't actually return his feelings and was putting on an act the whole time. Thankfully, this doubt goes away after his first meeting with Zarc.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives a very angry rant to Rin when coming to an understandable conclusion that she was manipulating him to revive Zarc.

    Yuto Pendragon

Yuto Pendragon

Archetype: Phantom Knights

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/91d70b2b0e5347aa987a95ad4470ca8c.jpg

One of the survivors of the invasion on the Xyz Dimension, as well as a member of Resistance. He is Yuya's Xyz Dimensional Counterpart.

He uses a Phantom Knights deck that focuses on summoning Xyz Monsters, including his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, and makes use of Spell and Trap Cards that can be activated from the graveyard.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the anime, Yuto was heterosexual and solely interested in Ruri romantically. Here, Word of God states that Yuto is bisexual and in love with both of the Kurosaki siblings.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He's usually stoic, even moreso after the Invasion of Heartland, and can be very deadly when the situation calls for it or is pushed to the point of unleashing a "cold fury" as a Duelist.
  • Birds of a Feather: He, Ruri, and Shun are notably calm, quiet, and surprisingly relenting in each of their own ways, and all three of them are in a relationship.
  • Bite of Affection: In his drunk-induced state, he wanted to do this to Ruri, but she gently refused and ask Zarc if there's something wrong after the training session.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The stoic and brooding boy to Ruri's compassionate and gentle girl. However, this becomes averted later on with the two becoming gender-inverted examples for a while before losing this dynamic entirely in chapter 13.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His ace monster and deck are all DARK Attribute monsters, his own appearance has a dark motif, and is a reincarnation/fragment of Zarc, who's skilled in Dark Magic. However, Yuto is very much a Nice Guy, and an Anti-Hero at best.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • Whenever he and Ruri confide with each other in private, their intimate moments can be seen as a PG-13 Sex for Solace.
Ruri sat up straighter and ran her hand through Yuto's hair and down his cheek, before pressing their foreheads together. "We're all in constant anxiety and fear, smiles are few and fleeting, so any happiness, any small comfort that we can take from each other... it's alright to ask," she whispered, giving Yuto's lips another kiss. Ruri broke the kiss slowly but Yuto pulled her in for another, the kiss became heated and Yuto's hand threaded through Ruri's hair, while the other one was placed between her shoulder blades. Yuto's lips kissed down Ruri's jaw and down her neck as she clung to him, placing her palm over the back of his neck and the other grabbed his shirt. After a while Ruri sat on Yuto's lap, as she buried her head in his neck, Yuto ran his hand through her hair, taking comfort in each others' arms, breathing each other in, so familiar and comforting, yet making the fear grow, the fear to lose all of this, the little happiness between them, the small sweet comfort, making them fight for a new day.
    • In chapter 20, Yuto was pretty much drunk after his training session with Zarc and revealed to Ruri in a Freudian Slip by saying how much he wants both her and Shun.
  • Double Take: He had this reaction when Shun mentions that Ruri is his sister. Justified since Ruri is Shun's adopted sister and before learning that, Yuto could tell that the two of them don't really look alike.
  • Draconic Humanoid: In his dream, he's described to have draconic features that are similar to his ace monster.
  • Et Tu, Brute?:
    • Combined with Broken Pedestal, as he clearly feels this way about Yusho Sakaki when learning that the man knew about Leo Akaba's plans and the invasion that would take place in the Xyz Dimension two years prior to the current time, as Yusho could've done something about it by warning them about the existence of the other dimensions yet instead, the man thought he could simply change Leo's mind about the launching an unprovoked interdimensional war.
    • He gets this again in chapter 22 when learning from Yuri about Dennis Mcfield's true identity as an Academia Spy who signaled the "go ahead" for the Academia Forces to invade the Xyz Dimension.
  • Fantastic Racism: Despite his kindness, he hates Fusion and those who use it, specifically Academia for their use of the Extra Deck Summoning mechanic to invade Heartland. However, this starts to become downplayed in his meeting with Zarc upon learning the Awful Truth, his other counterparts (especially Yuri), and Ruri's willingness to learn Fusion if it means it'll help the Resistance in the Interdimensional War.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Shun, as the two are best friends from thick to thin. Subverted as the "heterosexual" part doesn't apply to them anymore, as Word of God states that both Yuto and Shun are bisexual and homosexual respectively.
  • Irony: He has a darker and brooding appearance than his counterparts and origin, but is very much a Nice Guy with an understandable Black-and-White Morality view of Light Is Good and Dark Is Evil concerning his inherent Dark Magic. Leading to Zarc giving an explanation of how Light and Darkness are ultimately neutral concepts despite their sets of inherent rules.
  • Love at First Sight: He had this upon meeting Ruri for the first time as Shun introduces her to him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He rarely smiles after the invasion of Heartland. However, this slowly becomes subverted when he found hope after accepting Zarc's power.
  • Polyamory: After chapter 21, he's currently in a relationship with both of the Kurosaki siblings.
  • Power Loss Depression: Inverted. When he accepts Zarc's power, he becomes much more lively than his usual stoic demeanor, and this keeps on going as he slowly learns more of his abilities.
  • The Sacred Darkness: Ruri describes him as "the night sky", and his Phantom Knight deck and ace monster are more reminiscent of this rather than the stereotypical Dark Is Evil.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: As he accepted Zarc's power, Yuto becomes much more lively and hopeful, and is mentioned to be more open with his romantic relationship with Ruri.
  • Trauma Button: The Academia Forces and their use of Fusion Summoning is a huge one for him.
  • We Will Meet Again: Says this to Yuya near the end of chapter 23.
  • When He Smiles: Whenever he does smile, it shows the rare times he had peace since the invasion started.
