Village Residents

     Munch
A guardian spirit summoned by the villagers to aid them against the forces of evil that have been plaguing the island. Munch possesses the body of a doll provided by Yisya and should he be defeated, he can return in a new doll. Possessing a strong sense of justice and having a kind heart, Munch will stop anyone that are causing harm to the villagers and help anyone that is in trouble.
  • Acrofatic: Despite how huge Munch can grow, his running and jumping are unaffected by his size with two exceptions: at Weight Level 4 or higher, he can no longer wall jump, and at Weight Level 6, he's unable to move at all.
  • Badass Adorable: Munch is basically a tiny (or large) lizard wearing a hoodie and kilt, but behind his cute looks lurks a fighter who can go toe to toe with the best of them.
  • Balloon Belly: Munch will sport quite a large belly when his weight builds up and it only goes further when his weight capacity increases.
  • Become a Real Boy: In the good ending, the player can let Munch become a human as granted by the Island Spirit. In his human form, he's a young tan skinned man while keeping his signature blonde hair.
  • Belly Flop Crushing: His ground pound attack changes to his if he becomes large enough.
  • Big Eater: Munch can eat quite a lot, whether it be food or his enemies.
  • Burp of Finality: Every enemy Munch devours has him let out a small belch that also grows deeper the bigger he becomes.
  • Cast from Calories: Munch uses his own body fat to use his magic attacks. He can lose weight fairly quickly if he rapidly uses his magic.
  • Expressive Accessory: Munch's belly tattoo changes expressions based on Munch's mood.
  • Exposed to the Elements: Munch only wears a hoodie and a kilt, which doesn't protect him much from the cold areas on the mountain. Munch's fat likely keeps him warm anyway.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: Munch's eyes and mouth can be seen, but the area around the eyes are not visible
  • Fireballs: Munch can belch out fireballs as a magic attack, which fire in a straight line. Munch can also get a secondary fireball spell that homes in on enemies.
  • Forced Transformation: If he ingests too much slime, Munch's body will turn into one upon dying.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite being able to grow massive, Munch is still a kind hearted soul.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Munch is the kindest person you could ever meet, but he is not afraid to kick ass against those who do evil deeds.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has a wild blonde mane and a kind heart to those in need.
  • Heal Thyself: When sitting down, Munch can digest his fat to lose weight and heal from it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The Destiny? ending has him become the island's new seal on the core, keeping the evil spirit in check at the cost of going into slumber permanently.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Much will happily pet the village dog, but will refrain from doing so if he's too large so that he doesn't scare it.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: Zig-zagged. Munch can quickly balloon up if he eats a lot, but he won't digest it instantly. Having Munch sit down and holding the magic attack button can have him quickly digest his food to slim down and heal himself. Munch can also use an item that will quickly slim him down.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Being the island's guardian spirit, Munch was designed to be this way; he'll help anyone in need and stop the bad guys from causing harm to the innocent. A conversation with Katsu reveals that Munch's state of being is static, thus he can't really change his morals.
  • Kevlard: Munch can get the ability to reduce damage done to him if he's really fat. This inverts when dealing with piercing attacks like rapiers and thorns.
  • Large and in Charge: At high weight levels, Munch can become an absolute behemoth whose punches can send enemies flying backwards. He'll also take less physical damage (unless he's hit with a piercing attack, which will have him take more damage instead) and can push around smaller enemies.
  • Magic Pants: Munch's hoodie and kilt stay on him no matter how large he grows, but the kilt gradually gets covered by his growing belly until it completely vanishes.
  • Marshmallow Hell: A rare male example. At weight level 4, Munch can playfully leap on top of Key and smoosh him with his pecs.
  • Martial Pacifist: Munch always tries to talk his way out of fighting the boss characters, but is more than willing to lay the smackdown when they don't back down.
  • Nice Guy: Munch, being a guardian spirit, is very kind towards the island's peaceful inhabitants and will typically offers his foes a chance to walk away without a fight during special encounters (not that they will listen, but hey, it's the thought that counts).
  • Proj-egg-tile: Munch can belch out eggs that fly and bounce in an arc, dealing explosive magic damage to foes. Later abilities will allow the eggs to split into other eggs to hit enemies multiple times.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Zig-Zagged. While Munch's eyes are red, he has a complete lack of malice in his kind soul. That won't stop him laying the beatdown on anyone who threatens his tribe or his island, including the Anthropomorphic Personification of the island itself, so it's more of a warning for the villains if anything.
    • Can be defied entirely by purchasing cosmetics that change Munch's eye colour.
  • Screw Destiny: In the Golden Ending path, Munch chooses not to become the island's new seal and goes against his fate by finding another way to deal with the problem. He succeeds.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Munch becomes the Can if he accepts his fate in becoming the island's new seal.
  • Vacuum Mouth: He can suck up any food or defeated enemy with a powerful inhale. The range of his suction is increase if he is large. The Black Hole ability lets him suck up enemies without needing to defeat them.

     Yisya
The granddaughter of the Shaman. Yisya is a nice girl who offers the spirits of the island her handmade doll as a simple offering for their aid, which summons Munch.

  • Badass Adorable: An implied variant: Yisya made it through most of the Mountain Top and a cavern all by her own, both areas being at the end game, all so she could gather a few mushrooms for Munch.
  • Exposed to the Elements: When Munch explores the mountaintop, Yisya manages to scale the mountain to find him by herself while still wearing her tropical clothing that leaves most of her skin exposed.
  • Nice Girl: She's very polite and kind.
  • Please Wake Up: A variant of this plays in the sacrifice ending where Yisya makes several dozen Munch dolls in a desperate attempt to summon him again, even though his spirit is now the island's seal. She breaks down crying knowing she was fooling herself.

     To-Ri
An anthropomorphic bird who delivers mail and news throughout the island. He aids Munch by flying him to any bird statue he has activated.

  • Big Eater: He's first seen gorging on a huge banquet of food and is very fat, though he quickly sheds the weight off. He's also seen in the eating contest.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Delivers a fantastic one after Munch explains his 10-Minute Retirement was just a play to fatten him up for later.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Implied by the way his eating slows to a halt after Munch explains the above situation.
  • Feather Fingers: Has finger like appendages on his wings.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: When you first meet him, he's incredibly fat. The moment he leaves, he'll instantly slim down the next time you meet him. He does this again with the eating contest where he gets very fat and quickly sheds it off.
  • Large Ham: As much as Voice Grunting can be anyway. To-Ri bills himself regularly as THE GREAT BIRDMAN! and uses exclamations much more often than most other characters.
  • Warp Whistle: He serves as Munch's mode of transportation in getting around quickly.

     Key
A goat merchant looking to find a place to set up shop. Teaches Munch how to Wall Jump and sets up shop in the village after being rescued by him.

  • Cash Gate: Needs 3000 gold before he can offer Munch upgrades and the Mushroom Radar from his shop. The upgrade isn't required to get Munch the potion needed to get him to win the Eating Contest however.
  • Marshmallow Hell: On the receiving end from Munch in an optional interaction with him at weight level 4.
  • Wall Jump: Teaches this to Munch after being saved from being ganged up by a bunch of pigs.

Other Island Residents

     Kitora
A Dragon that operates a set of "Flying Courses" that Munch can do to earn cash.

  • Creator Cameo: Kitora is the alias of one of the designers of the game, and the character in question is just their 'sona.
  • Minigame: Their Flying Courses are this. All Munch has to do is avoid obstacles while collecting coins on the way, which after the first stage gets a bit difficult.

     Indigo Jack
A shark that owns "Jack's Resort", a restaurant at the beach. His meals mostly involve buffing Munch's attacks, either by increasing the damage or by reducing the cost of his spells.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Gender-Inverted, as he has a (one-sided) crush on Captain Killsha.
  • Blush Sticker: Anytime he thinks about Captain Killsha.
  • Chubby Chaser: His crush with Captain Killsha can be seen as this, especially after Munch beats her and he talks to her at Jack's resort.
  • Money Multiplier: His drink, "Lucky Lemonade", increases the gold amount Munch gets by 15% while under it's effect.
  • Supreme Chef: At least enough that he can run a profitable food stand by himself. The reason why Captain Killsha keeps trying to recruit him as her crew's chef.

Antagonists

     Boarus
Leader of the Pig Tribe that has been attacking the Village. Is the first boss of the game and grants Munch the Ground Slam ability upon defeat.

  • Acrofatic: The 2nd phase of his boss fight shows off that he's surprisingly nimble despite his larger size, though he does tire out, which opens him up to attacks.
  • Being Good Sucks: In the good ending, the idea of him needing to stop acting bad in order to let the island flourish rubs him the wrong way since he can no longer pillage like he used to, though it's implied he'll still follow through.
  • Big Eater: The 2nd phase of his boss fight starts with him ordering his chefs to feed him so he can enlarge himself to properly use his Ground Slam attack. He also takes part in the eating contest later in the game.
  • Ground Pound: His signature move, and the move his "essence" grants Munch.
  • Sore Loser: He's not happy losing to Munch in both their battle and the eating contest.

     Slime King
A Large Slime with a crown, that had made a deal with the Pig Tribe to allow them access to the Crystal Mines. After beating them and getting paid the required amount of coins, grants Munch his 4th weight level.

  • Asteroids Monster: A variant, as they spawn different slimes as they take damage.
  • Cash Gate: Is one, as part of the requirements to get Munch his 4th weight level aside from reaching the requisite full cap is a large sum of coins.
  • Flunky Boss: While an active participant of the fight, most of the difficulty of the fight involves the slimes that spawn from them as they take damage.
  • Mighty Glacier: Slime King is very slow, but takes a lot of punishment relative to the early game scaling and isn't knocked back very far by Munch's combo finishers.
  • No Name Given: They're only ever referred to as some variant of Slime King.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: Even after being beaten, they still need repeated cajoling from Munch to behave while training his size capacity up to size four, and in the Golden Ending they do all they can to allow provisions in the peace treaty to continue their signature Orifice Invasion habits.
  • King Mook: Is basically the biggest slime of them all with a crown on his head.
  • Orifice Invasion: His method of expanding Munch's weight capacity is forcing himself through his mouth and then expanding in his stomach.
  • Verbal Tic: One that's shared with a more famous all-consuming magical creature, poyo!

     Fox Rival

Katsu

A fox that seems to know a lot about being a guardian spirit. Challenges Munch a few times during his journey, each battle granting him more abilities.

  • Acrofatic: His 2nd and 3rd fights have him bulk himself up and he's still as nimble as he is normally.
  • All There in the Manual: Is only named in the Steam Achievements.
  • Balloon Belly: Later fights have him gain a huge belly, making him hit harder and become more difficult to dodge.
  • Bullet Hell: The later fights also include him firing either waves (accompanied with bubbles in the 3rd fight against him) or spirit bullets using his fan.
  • The Dragon: Munch thinks Katsu is this for Lord Darkdread. The reality is that he's fighting Munch so that Munch can get strong enough to beat Darkdread.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: Much like Munch he'll balloon up after one meal, and after being beaten in a fight lose it all quickly.
  • Papa Wolf: The real reasons he fights Munch is to both test him and to protect his niece and nephews from Darkdread.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He always has a toothy grin on his face, except when he is defeated or surprised.
  • The Rival: It's in his title.
  • Stealth Mentor: He fights Munch several times and is always willing to bust his chops for no reason other than being amused by it. He also refuses to help fight Dakdread directly and prefers that Munch do the deed. He's actually helping Munch unlock his potential so that he can become stronger and face Darkdread. If Munch meets with Katsu at his hideaway, the latter drops his trollish facade to have a heart to heart talk with him.
  • Weight Taller: He gets quite taller when he bulks up, but not to the same extent as Munch.

     Crystal Golem
A Golem at the end of the Crystal Mines that guards the diamond Munch needs to get access to the northern beach.

     Toria
A dragon that's part of Captain Killsha's crew that fights using a food cannon. She joined the pirates mostly to find her brother but got distracted.

  • Flunky Boss: Outside of the cannon, she also sends out other members of Killsha's crew to attack Munch.
  • Graceful Loser: Takes being force-fed food to the point they become a bed rather well, thinking herself as a giant lazy pillow.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Uses a food cannon compared to her brother Wave, who attacks mainly in melee.
  • No Name Given: In-game that is. Their name is only given in the achievement tied to their defeat.
  • Tennis Boss: What her fight consists of. Her food cannon's projectiles can be punched back to feed her until she becomes too fat for her platform to hold her.
  • Turns Red: Not her, but her cannon starts firing more wildly as she gets fatter.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Turning around after beating her has her be back to her original weight somehow, most likely so Munch can talk to her and challenge her to rematches.

     Captain Killsha
Pirate Captain that works for Lord Darkdread. She and her crew enforces the embargo that has prevented people from coming to Mystic Island. Grants Munch the Double Jump ability upon defeat.

     Wave
A dragon that's found in the middle of the Hive.

  • Bubble Gun: His Shockwave Clap attack later in the fight also sends out bubbles, which much like the ones sent out by the Water Dragon and Air Elemental enemies, can inflate Munch. At low health he can send out a squall of bubbles, which can easily spell doom for Munch if he's too full when it happens.
  • Grievous Harm Witha Body: Can throw downed enemies in his fight, or honey slimes depending on how low his health is.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Compared to his sister Toria, who uses a food cannon, He fights in melee.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After beating him, Munch convinces him to go to the village since they're more than willing to have extra help and so he can help protect the village while Munch is out.
  • Shockwave Clap: Can do one that can later on fire off an impressive amount of bubbles to inflate Munch with.

     Lord Darkdread
The main antagonist behind the troubles occurring around the island. Lord Darkdread is a huge dragon whose reasoning behind his attacks is known only to himself.

  • Acrofatic: Don't let his gut and massively muscular frame fool you since he can jump high enough to stay off screen for several seconds.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: In his Gigaform, Munch can only damage his head.
  • A Father to His Men: According to the kobold guard at the castle, Darkdread gave him a job and food to eat as well as sharing his mother's cookies with everyone.
  • Balloon Belly: He gains a massively round belly if he is force fed enough eggs, which pops off his armor and makes him more vulnerable to physical attacks and removes his contact damage. His belly shrinks down after it is punched by Munch several times, but he'll still have a larger than normal belly.
  • Breath Weapon: He can breathe fire. He has a stronger version of this after he transforms, which extends across the entire screen.
  • Dark Is Evil: A dark gray dragon wielding a black hammer, wears a black mask, and all around bad. Proven to be not the case on the good ending path.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father does get a mention from his mother, but he never makes an appearance.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Is called "Lord Chubtail" by his mother.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Despite trying to be an evil lord, he'll still take time to chat with his mother and will ask her to make his favorite dish.
  • Genre Savvy: He knows that Munch is immortal and cannot be killed, thus he stuffs him in a bottle after beating him in the Shadowlands in order to trap him. Katsu breaks him out.
  • Heel–Face Turn: On the good ending route, he realizes that the voice he heard in his head ordering him to beat Munch to save the island was a lie and he helps Munch by beating a bunch of ghosts blocking the way.
  • Large and in Charge: He's massive all around, but unlike Munch, he has only a beer belly and makes up the rest with massive muscular arms and uses a huge hammer.
  • Like Father, Like Son: According to his mother, Darkdread's father also went through a dark lord phase when he was younger.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Wears a mask that covers his face and has a white X in the middle.
  • Mighty Glacier: He's generally not too quick and some of his attacks have a wind up to them, but if he manages to land a hit on Munch, it will seriously hurt.
  • One-Winged Angel: He transforms into a massive feral dragon during the second battle against him inside his castle.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He owns a pink cellphone which has the theme of Supercow as the ringtone.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has yellow eyes with red irises.
  • Stationary Boss: Gigaform Darkdread only moves his mouth and right forelimb, barring basic idle animation.
  • Villainous Rescue: When Munch goes on his way to confront the island's spirit, a large group of ghosts block his path. Darkdread comes crashing down from above and knocks them all out so Munch can proceed to the final battle unimpeded. He does this after realizing that the spirit played him like a fiddle and also wanting a rematch with Munch.

     SPOILER
Island Spirit
The real antagonist who is behind everything in the plot. Many years ago, she was just a spirit of the Great Tree that grew in the middle of the island. When the island's residents chopped the tree down and sapped it of its magical reserves, she responded to this by destroying their city and cursing their souls to be trapped there for all eternity. After realizing what they have done, the spirit regretted her actions. To make up for it, they split their soul in two; she sealed her evil half away deep beneath the island while her good half was allowed to roam free. Her actions started a cycle of resealing her evil side for hundreds of years until Munch decides to finally break this cycle.

  • Anatomy of the Soul: Split their soul in two after witnessing the destruction they wrought in her rage.
  • Ethereal White Dress: She's a pale spirit in an all white dress.
  • Gaia's Vengeance: Being the spirit of the island and nature itself, she destroyed the city that was responsible for cutting the giant tree.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: They wear golden bracelets and their dress has a gold trim on it. They still keep the gold bracelets even in their dragon form.
  • Graceful Loser: When Munch defeats her, she realizes that she was wrong to continue the cycle of resealing and decides to forgive the islanders to start anew. She even turns Munch into a full human being if he wishes it.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: Their evil half is sealed at the island's core, but it's slowly leaking out, which influences Darkdread and convinces him to stop Munch. The good half of the spirit tries to convince Munch to become the new seal on the evil half, which Munch can go along with or destroy the weakening seal instead depending on the player's choice.
  • Light Is Not Good: Downplayed. Their color scheme is mostly white, and while they have the safety of Mystic Island in mind, they did not take to the felling of their tree, nor to the breaking of the seal for their evil side, kindly.
  • Magical Barefooter: She wanders around barefoot and her dragon form also lacks footwear.
  • Mana Drain: A variant, as they drain all of Munch's fullness at the beginning of each phase of their fight.
  • Manipulative Bastard: She prods Munch to continue his quest to stop Darkdread while the spirit's evil half manipulates Darkdread to stop Munch. By doing this, Munch and Darkdread would inevitably meet and fight each other since Munch still thinks he's doing the right thing with his heroics while Darkdread thinks he's doing the same thing for himself. When Munch wins, the spirit then prods Munch into inhaling the evil half of her spirit so that Munch becomes the new seal and save the island.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She regrets having killed off an entire civilization after enacting her revenge on them for cutting the great tree. This convinces her to seal off her dark side to repent.
  • No Name Given: She doesn't have a name.
  • One-Hit Kill: Their final form has a screen covering laser that will kill Munch instantly unless he hides behind a rock.
  • One-Winged Angel: Their 3rd form has her dragon self become huge and demonic looking.
  • Scaled Up: Their 2nd form has them turn into a white dragon, and their 3rd form has them become as large as the screen.
  • Tranquil Fury: She never raises her voice even while she tries to kill Munch for destroying the island's seal.
