Minato Tribe

Chiyoda Tribe

    Tenshin Otori
Voiced by: Hiroshi Naka (JP), Michael Sorich (EN)

  • Abusive Parents: He raised Ojiro to be nothing more than his secret weapon on the XB field and berates him whenever he tries to protest his decisions. He wasn't much better to Kazuki either, declaring him worthless and making Ojiro break his arm before casting him out of Chiyoda. And that's without getting into the numerous other kids he subjected to brutal training in the hopes of creating the ultimate XB player.
  • Asshole Victim: His death at Ojiro's hands is well-deserved, to say the least.
  • Big Bad: Leads the main antagonistic faction and wants nothing more to subjugate the other tribes. He ends up surpassed by Ojiro and Yui after his death at the former's hands.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Right after he declares his intention to cheat in future XB matches, Ojiro kills him for being dishonorable.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He's the one who turned Ojiro into the strength-obsessed XB player he is today, and he dies at Ojiro's hands after declaring his intention to cheat in future matches.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He leaves most of the actual work to his subordinates.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red sclera and is an absolute monster.

    Ojiro Otori
Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (JP), Corpse Husband (EN)

  • Blood Knight: Resorts to violence the first chance he gets when playing XB, and specifically changes the rules to allow for more bloodshed after taking over Neo Tokyo.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Yui are Tenshin's top subordinates.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Kills his father and takes over as the main villain for the last part of the series.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As violent as he is, he does have a sense of honor when it comes to XB. He kills Tenshin when he declares his intention to cheat and dismisses Yui when she tries to shoot Hanafuda to death during a game.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: His voice actors in both the Japanese and English dubs are well-known for their deep voices, so this was pretty much a given.
  • Freudian Excuse: He adopted much of his current personality to help him survive Tenshin's brutal training regime.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He disavows his previous ideals in the finale before leaving with Kazuki to start anew.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Just like his father, he has red sclera. Flashbacks show that he didn't always have them.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: As a kid, he was enthusiastic about the idea of playing XB alongside his best friend.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Kazuki, before years of brutal training led to him disavowing the idea of friendship altogether. They manage to rekindle it during the finale once Kazuki finally gets Ojiro to see reason.

    Yui Kamiki
Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (JP), Amber Lee Connors (EN)

  • Co-Dragons: She and Ojiro are Tenshin's top subordinates. She later becomes a solo Dragon after Ojiro takes over.
  • Girl Friday: To Tenshin.
  • Karma Houdini: Escapes any consequences after crashing the Chiyoda Castle into the main city.
  • Kick Chick: Able to both bat and pitch balls using her legs alone.
  • Powered Armor: Wears a set when she plays XB.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: She speaks with a gentle tone, but she's just as ruthless as her boss.
  • The Starscream: Acts the part of Ojiro's loyal assistant, but plans to rule Neo Tokyo through him.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Ojiro dismisses her, she shuts down the device keeping Chiyoda Castle aloft and lets it crash into the city out of spite towards him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The last we see of her is when she escapes Chiyoda Castle before it falls; her whereabouts afterwards are unknown.

    The Hannya Squad
Voiced by: Charles White, Christopher Guerrero, Connor Colquhoun, Disguised Toast, Kestin Howard, Sykkuno, Technoblade, Tom Schalk, Valkyrae, Yong Yea (EN)

  • All There in the Manual: Their group name is only shown in the credits.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: A few of them have odd quirks (one dresses up like a vampire and another one acts like a monkey, for example), but they’re all highly skilled XB players.
  • Creepy Twins: Two of the squad's members are twins, and they're just as creepy as the rest.
  • Elite Mook: They all have different designs from the standard Chiyoda Tribe mooks, signifying their collective status as an elite squad.
  • Giggling Villain: The twins and the vampire get in some creepy giggles.
  • The Voiceless: None of them have any lines, merely letting out grunts and giggles.

Taito Tribe

    Yajirobe Ueno
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (JP), Tom Laflin (EN)

    Hanafuda Sakura
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (JP), Kamran Nikhad (EN)

  • The Ace: He's a powerful XB player, and is stated to be the only person who's ever beaten Shun.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Refers to Yajirobe as "Yaji".
  • Ambiguously Bi: While he's explicitly interested in women, he also has a Like an Old Married Couple dynamic with Yajirobe.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: A skilled XB player, but he's only interested in laying around and being pampered, and he outright states he only plays the game for Yajirobe.
  • The Charmer: He's definitely lecherous when it comes to the geishas that live with him, but evidence suggests he treats them fairly well.
  • Cynical Mentor: Reluctantly agrees to mentor Taiga, but has no faith in the kid's skills and his "training" involves abandoning him in a forest and telling him to do a pointless task (which actually does end up boosting his skills).
  • Fanservice Extra: Often seen accompanied by three scantily-clad geishas.
