  • Cliché Storm: It plays a number of the typical sports drama tropes completely straight (Haru being the underdog who's constantly encouraged to believe in himself, Hanafuda being the retired Cynical Mentor uninterested in training Taiga until he's convinced, etc).
  • Ho Yay:
    • Kazuki and Ojiro, full stop. They were each other's only real friends for years, and even after Ojiro broke his arm, Kazuki admits that he's still dear to him and that he wants nothing more than to help him. The finale just cranks this up even further; flashbacks show that Kazuki never gave up on Ojiro even as the latter fell further and further into Tenshin's clutches, and in the present day Kazuki outright steps between him and a train in order to get him to see reason. Their fate at the end of the series is unknown, but the last we see of them is Kazuki proposing that they leave and start over and Ojiro agreeing.
    • Yajirobe and Hanafuda; the two of them bicker Like an Old Married Couple and the latter freely admits that the only reason he still plays XB is for the former.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • A number of people who weren't interested in or otherwise hadn't heard of the anime beforehand gained an interest in it after it was announced that Corpse Husband would be voicing Ojiro in the English dub. This sentiment only increased when it was revealed that several minor roles would be filled by fellow streamers Sykkuno, Valkyrae, Disguised Toast, and Technoblade.
    • There's also fans of Danganronpa who gained an interest in the series simply because it's another project done by Kazutaka Kodaka.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: A number of viewers liked Kamiya a lot, and felt disappointed when the character was killed off a few episodes in.
