Mythical Age

    Shin Reglia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shin_reglia.png
Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (Japanese), Daman Mills (English)
The right-hand man of Demon King Anos Voldigoad and the most powerful swordsman among the demons.
  • Always Someone Better: He is this to Kanon in terms of swordsmanship, as Kanon considers him the only person who is superior to himself with the sword. After reincarnating as the pure-blood demon Lay Grandsley, despite growing stronger than he was during the Mythical Age, Kanon is still no match for Shin as a pure swordsman, due to the fact that Shin chose to not reincarnate and continued to hone his skills due to protecting Aharthern, while Kanon was constantly reincarnating and preparing his plan to end the Great War.
  • Arch-Enemy: He considered Nousgalia this, as the Heavenly Father God was responsible for all of the tragedies that befell him after he married Reno. He is very pleased when Anos provides him the opportunity to defeat Nousgalia by his own hands.
  • Battle Couple: He becomes this with Reno, as demonstrated when she assisted him during his fight with Nousgalia.
  • Berserk Button: Anything he perceives as a slight against Anos, will shortly be punished by the blade of his sword.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Due to Nousgalia's manipulations, he is forced to chose between remaining loyal to his master Anos, or to save his daughter by spreading the legends of the fake Demon King in order to keep her alive. He prioritizes his daughter's safety, although his betrayal of Anos caused him great anguish.
  • Defrosting Ice King: It's noted that his interactions with Reno have softened him up a bit, as he gained other things to live for besides serving Anos. Anos notes that he didn't have a habit of repeating himself if he said something to someone else, but he repeatedly apologized to Reno after she couldn't get the candy she wanted due to his insistance on keeping her protected.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Due to him being a Living Weapon that was able to gain a demon form, he is unsure of his purpose in life, as he began to search for meaning. After encountering Anos, he concluded that he had found his calling in serving as Anos' right-hand man.
  • Easily Forgiven: He is easily forgiven by Anos for his betrayal. Justified, as it is clear that Shin didn't really want to betray Anos and only did it to protect his daughter. Anos even stated if he was there, he would have ordered Shin to do the whatever it took to protect his daughter.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He makes his debut as Anos' Dragon by easily defeating a great spirit that laid waste to Anos' army in a single blow, as well as demonstrating his Undying Loyalty by requesting the right to serve Anos again after they reincarnate.
  • Happily Married: He eventually marries the Great Spirit Reno.
  • Identity Impersonator: He is revealed to be the impersonator of Avos Dilhevia that appeared during the Demon Sword Tournament, as he made his appearance in order to hide the fact that Lay was actually Avos Dilhevia.
  • Master Swordsman: He is considered the strongest and most skilled swordsman among the demons and even in the world. He is considered even more skilled in pure swordsmanship than the likes of Hero Kanon, despite the latter defeating him once in a duel.
  • Mystical White Hair: He has grey hair, which along with his stoic nature adds to his mysterious nature.
  • Regretful Traitor: He had choose between saving his daughter by spreading the rumours and legends of the Fictional Demon King Avos Dilhevia, lest she disappear due to the lack of belief in her lore on account of her being a spirit or preserving his loyalty to Anos in exchange for dooming his daughter to non-existence. He chose his daughter, though his seeming betrayal of Anos continued to haunt him up until the present.
  • Walking Armory: He is said to possess a thousand demon swords with various abilities, and he is proficient with all of them.
  • Undying Loyalty: He is considered as Anos' most devoted subordinate, as he requested the rewards of his bet with Anos being that he is allow the permission to reincarnate himself so he could serve Anos again in a new life.

    Emilia Ludowell

Emilia Ludowell

Click here for her current appearance.
Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (Japanese), Dawn M. Bennett (English)
The former pureblooded homeroom teacher of Anos' class, who absolutely despised everybody that wasn't a pureblood demon, especially the defiant Anos. After Anos deals with her, she drops out of the school.
  • Asshole Victim: After everything she did, starting with being a racist bitch and topping off by nearly killing Izabella and Anos' Fan Club, it's extremely cathartic to see Anos let loose his fury by torturing her into begging for her life, followed by killing her and reincarnating her as a hybrid, which he adds to by cursing her to make this new state of being permanent.
  • The Atoner: After she gets the shit beat out of her post-reincarnation, she takes a hit intended for Anos's mother, which earns her Anos's gratitude. Sooner or later, after realizing that her experiences with the very racism she once believed in would forever change her, even if she returned as a pure-blooded demon, she decides to enroll as a teacher, and later, headmistress in the Hero Academy, swearing her life to protect and guide her new students there.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: She originally spoke with a lower voice than other female characters when she had been a teacher in a school aimed for pure-blooded demons, specifically a deep, sophisticated tone that showcases her prideful and snobbish nature, and turns especially unhinged when she attacks Izabella and Anos's fanclub.. However, she gets changed from a pure demon into a half-demon against her will and she now had a higher pitched voice thanks to her age being reduced in the transformation. Said transformation also leads to the termination of her employment as a teacher.
  • Big Brother Worship: She loves her big brother and saw him as one of the greatest examples of pureblood supremacy. When Anos beat him in the sword tournament, her regular level of hatred towards Anos skyrocketed, which resulted in her deciding to attack his mother Izabella to steal his sword and disqualify him. She would live to regret it.
  • Big "NO!": After being forcibly turned into a half-demon and will always revive as one every time she dies, she starts saying no several times with her biggest one occuring when Anos leaves her behind in the nude.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Despite her hatred for non-purebloods, she does knows to keep a facade to not make it too apparent, and as such she appears no more racist than the average pureblood noble. By the time Anos defeats her brother in the sword tournament, she reaches her breaking point and finally reveals her true self, though to her credit she initially attempts to take Anos's sword from Izabella feigning a polite demeanor before resorting to violence.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Blood starts spilling from her mouth when Anos fatally pins her to the ground with a sword prior to him permanently reincarnating her as a half-demon after she dies. Later, she bleeds again in the fifth episode of season 2, as a result of the beatings she took thanks to her transformation into a half-demon.
  • Break the Haughty: She was initially an advocate for Fantastic Racism against half-demons and humans. However, after being forcibly being reincarnated into a half-demon and being a victim of the very racism she advocated afterwards, she finally begins to reconsider her world view and even takes a fire blast intended for Izabella.
  • Cassandra Truth: Following her becoming a half-demon, she tries to talk a small group of pureblood demon students out of assaulting her by trying to convince them of what she originally was. Unfortunately, they do not believe her (and likely do not care) because of her new form before they proceed to pummel her and drain mana from her. Fortunately, Anos's parents manage to step in and save her.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Early on, her interactions with Anos are largely comedic in nature and are portrayed as Anos putting another conceited and racist noble in their place. However, her violent assault on Izabella and the Anos Fan Union (where she reveals the depth of her hatred towards non-pureblood demons), as well as her torture and reincarnation as a hybrid at the hands of Anos, definitely are NOT Played for Laughs.
  • Character Development: Initially a Blue Blood noble with Fantastic Racism, after she receives her Karmic Transformation below, she promptly gets beaten up and is forced to fend for herself before Anos intervenes. In a moment's notice, however - she actually manages to protect one of her former victims from being targeted, earning Anos' gratitude. Realizing that her views are changed forever, she gradually learns to be more accepting of hybrids and humans, to the point where she dutifully becomes the headmistress of the mostly human Hero Academy. A pretty impressive turnaround for a character introduced as a Hate Sink.
  • Cleavage Window: When she returns in episode five of the second season, the rags she found herself dressing up in show off a fair amount of her cleavage.
  • Color Me Black: Anos turns her into a hybrid to punish her.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Following her reincarnation into a hybrid, her eyes and hair are now brown.
  • Dark Is Evil: She had black as part of her uniform and initially was a murderous advocate of Fantastic Racism. After she witnessed the error of her ways when she was turned into a half-demon, she later wore a new uniform beffitting Dark Is Not Evil.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: How Emilia died before her permanent reincarnation into a half-demon depends on the version of the story. In the source material: Anos tortured her with worms that merge with eachother inside her body before he tears her heart out and her now lifeless original body remains intact while she witnesses what's left of it in her new one. In the anime she gets stabbed while on the ground, Anos twists his sword to make her plead for mercy, and stabs her once more before disintegrating her body and reforming it into her new form as a hybrid demon.
  • Dies Wide Open: When Anos stabs her to death in the anime prior to reincarnating into a half-demon, we get to see her eyes dilate until they appear wholly white.
  • Dirty Coward: When Anos tortured her after her failed attempt at mass murdering his fanclub and his mother, she pleads for mercy. Anos does not buy her act and kills and reincarnates her into a half-demon. This trait is more pronounced in the source material, she attempts to use fly magic to escape when Anos intervened in the attempt, he breaks through her anti-magic protection and sends her crashing through the ground where he proceeds to constrict her with his magic until he takes her to the arena and kill and reincarnate her into a half-demon there. She subverts this trait later on when she shields Anos's mother from a blast of fire, which serves to redeem her.
  • Discovering Your Own Dead Body: Only in the source material for the manga and anime. Upon reincarnating in the form of a half-demon, one of the first things she witnesses is her dead pure blood demon body. This is averted in the anime as Anos disintegrates her dead body as he reincarnates her into a buck-naked half-demon.
  • Driven to Suicide: Upon realizing that Anos has reduced her from a pure blood demon to a half-demon, she attempted to kill herself by cutting her throat. This does not take as the wound heals itself and even if she did kill herself, the curse Anos inflicted ensures she always resurrects as a half-demon if she dies.
  • Electric Torture: In the source material, after Anos drops her at the arena, she attempts to stab him with a demon sword he created only for it to shock her violently and send her plummeting to the ground before Anos proceeds to stomp on her head and stab her. Before the "poison worm" torture, Anos sends another electric shock into her body.
  • Empty Eyes: In the web novel and light novel, upon finding that she cannot commit suicide to escape her permanent transformation into a half-demon, her eyes enter an empty state as she falls into a state of despair.
  • Eye Colour Change: Her eyes get changed from pink to brown upon being resurrected as a half-demon. It serves to reflect her pride as a pure demon being shredded to pieces.
  • Fan Disservice: She's a borderline case of a Hot Teacher, since she's attractive but never portrayed sexually. The only time her decently shapely body is shown off is when she experiences Naked on Revival following her death and forced reincarnation after she took her Hate Sink status so far (trying to kill Izabella and the Unitarians) that Anos was angry enough to torture her to death and forcibly transform her into a hybrid, leaving her a traumatized and sobbing wreck, which kinda kills any sexiness one might get from seeing her naked body.
  • Fantastic Racism: She is one of the worst examples of the discriminatory attitudes towards hybrids and humans. While most purebloods at least tolerate their existence despite scorning them, she sees anybody that isn't a pureblood demon as unworthy of even existing.
  • Fate Worse than Death: As a proud pureblooded royal, Anos reincarnating her as a hybrid horrifies her into trying to commit suicide, only stopping after Anos states that killing herself to escape her fate is pointless as he cursed her source to forever reincarnate as a hybrid.
  • Fountain of Youth: Upon her reincarnation into a half-demon, Emilia was visibly reduced in terms of age and her voice was now much higher in pitch. This combined with her mostly altered appearance ensured Izabella did not recognize her.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: As soon as she gets reincarnated as a completely naked half-demon, Emilia quickly uses her arms and hands to cover her exposed breasts.
  • Hate Sink: She's pretty much the perfect embodiment of everything terrible about the modern demon royalty, being a condescending racist bitch who refuses to acknowledge Anos's power purely due to his hybrid nature, and eventually takes this racism so far, she tries to kill Anos's mother purely to spite him. It's subverted once she suffers post-transformation, becoming The Atoner in later appearances.
  • Healing Factor: Upon mortally cutting herself following her transformation into a Human-Demon Hybrid, Emilia finds out that attempting to kill herself will only lead to her wounds healing as yet another part of Anos' hybridization curse, much to her dismay.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Initially starting off as a murderous Hate Sink, Emilia, following her Karmic Transformation, Takes the Bullet for Izabella despite trying to kill her before and later bonds with the reformed students of the Hero Academy.
  • Heel Realization: Following her Forced Transformation into a half-demon, a group of pure-blooded students assault her, claiming she's a vulgar hybrid with vulgar thoughts. This is one factor in Emilia's realization of how biased her prior beliefs towards hybrids were.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: When Emilia first appeared she was a powerful but racist pure blooded demon teacher. After Anos manages to reincarnate her as a mixed blood demon, she had no power outside of being cursed to revive as a hybrid each time she died, she loses her job as a teacher, she was penniless, and the most humiliating thing about it was that she was entirely nude and did not have anything to wear until she attained rags.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: After Anos thwarts her attempts at killing his fan club along with his mother, he kills her then resurrects her in a new demon body with half its DNA coming from a human. This results in her being a victim of the same half-demon discrimination she once was fanatical towards.
  • Hypocrite:
    • In the source material, she calls Anos a coward when he had her pinned to the ground and tortured. However, she had moments of cowardice herself such as her failed attempt to flee from Anos when he thwarts her attempted murder of his mother and fan club as well as screaming for him to stop when he worsens her torture.
    • When she tries to kill Anos's fan club, she brands the hybrids as thieves who eavesdrop on her classes and steal knowledge. This was rich considering she had a pure-blood student steal a staff Anos and his friends found earlier.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Ivis comes to her class to give the students a special lecture, she practically begs Anos to not do anything funny since Ivis is a respected figure in the demon society. While Anos ignores her and does something as impolite as grabbing Ivis by the head to restore his memories (and gets away with it cause he's Anos and also Ivis's creator), Emilia brings a valid argument in that any other student that would have tried to pull a stunt similar to Anos's would have likely regretted it.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Before her departure from the series, her only role seemed to be being ridiculed by Anos anytime they interacted, be it directly (like when he discovers her ruse of hiding the magical scepter he and Misha retrieved from his castle in the exam of the first arc in the body of another student) or indirectly (when Anos addresses and then grabs Ivis, a very important figure in the demon society, casually to return him his actual memories, in front of the whole class). The last thing to happen to her before she made her departure was being transformed into a stark naked half-demon which resulted in her losing her job and having to endure the very racism she previous was a fanatic of. Given her racist and murderous nature at the time, she deserved it all.
  • Karmic Transformation: As a pureblood demon that espouses hybrids as utter scum that deserve to be thrown out like trash, after she tries to kill Izabella, Anos kills her and forcibly reincarnates her as a hybrid herself, followed by cursing her source to always be a hybrid no matter how many times she reincarnates, forcing her to spend the rest of her life being treated as worthless garbage by the society she used to exalt. That said, she still possesses most of her spellcasting prowess post-transformation, minus the ability to carry a demon sword.
  • Light Is Not Good: Portions of her initial outfit had been white, and she was initially far from a saint. Following her redemption, she attains a new outfit with smaller portions of white, landing her in Light Is Good.
  • Madness Mantra: In the source material when Anos forcibly turns her into a hybrid and makes her realize the pickle he placed her in, she starts incoherently saying "a lie..." as she checked the blood of her new body repeatedly before she snaps and quickly swipes Anos's sword in a suicide attempt.
  • Mana Drain: Finds herself on the receiving end of this trope post-transformation when a group of pure-blood students thwart her attempt at escape and proceed to drain her mana in a visibly painful manner. Fortunately for her, Izabella arrives to save her.
  • Naked on Revival: When Anos kills and reincarnates her, she comes back naked. Given Anos is perfectly capable of bringing people back with their clothes, he likely did that to further humiliate her. He then leaves her, leaving it unknown how she managed to get home.
  • Oblivious Transformation: After being resurrected following being killed by Anos, she initially is just angry that she was revived without any clothes. But she does not realize she was reduced from being a pure demon to a half-demon until Anos asks her to check herself with her demonic eyes when she finally realizes what happened to her.
  • Offended by an Inferior's Success: As a pure-blood demon, she looks down on Anos, a half-demon, despite his power and tries to upstage him only to get humiliated. Her last straw breaks when Anos scores a victory against her brother and responds by trying to kill his mother and fan club, but this bites her hard big time when he captures her and forcibly turns her into a half-demon just like him which results in her losing both her job and her home.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Downplayed. She does smile from time to time, but especially due to interacting with Anos, her face normally appears as a serious scowl.
  • Playing with Fire: She's adept in the use of the flame spell Gusgum, which she manifests from the palm of her hands and is able to cast as a powerful blast. Her fire is also black and purple colored.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: Following her getting smacked around after her reincarnation, Emilia comes to realise how wrong her previous system of beliefs was and begs Anos to kill her. He turns this down, and she breaks down in Tears of Remorse for her past actions.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: She styles her hair in a mixture of a top knot and a ponytail. It both serves to show her status as a prestigious teacher and as a prideful pureblood demon. Her hair being let down from this style following her hybrid reincarnation acts as a sign of her losing both her status and her pride.
  • Psycho Pink: Initially, she has a pair of pink eyes and was murderous racist. However, she gets reincarnated into a brown-eyed half-demon and eventually realizes how wrong her actions and beliefs were after being made to suffer the same racism she supported.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She initially had light purple hair signifying her status as a pureblood demon and can make use of purple fire. However, she gets killed and reincarnated into a brown-haired half-demon with this power locked away which destroys her pride as a former pureblood demon.
  • Put on a Bus: Following her Karmic Transformation, the fact she's a hybrid in a school that only employs purebloods results in her losing her job as a teacher, meaning she stops interacting with Anos for the most part, though she does make a few sporadic appearances in later volumes.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: Upon being resurrected as a butt naked half-demon, Emilia covers herself and angrily lashes out at Anos, asking if this was his idea of humiliating her.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Following her hybrid transformation, Emilia finds that if she kills herself, she will resurrect as a hybrid every time she dies.
  • Riches to Rags: After her transformation into a half-demon, not only was she naked in that form; she also lost her job, was booted from her family home, and she had no money. While she does eventually get rags, the job she gets only nets her a limited amount of money, and she was assailed by the racism she previously advocated for. She even laments that her food was poor in quality as well, and that she could not open any canned food she got.
  • Shameful Strip: When she is revived as a half-demon, she was revived with no clothing despite having passed away in them. While Anos is capable of bringing people back from the dead with their clothing intact, as seen with Zepes, it's clear that he wanted to further humiliate her.
  • Slashed Throat: How she attempted to kill herself after her forced transformation into a half-demon. Suffice to say, the wound heals up as she would only revive as a half-demon every time she dies.
  • Smug Snake: When Anos intervenes in her attempt at killing his mother and his fan club, Emilia, despite Anos's greater power, tells him to know his place. He uses his magic to constrict her and prevent her from talking until he warps with her to the arena where eh proceeds to shred her arrogance by torturing her to death and forcibly transforming her into a half-demon which replaces her smugness with shear horror at her new form. After experiencing the hard life of a half-demon, she became a more humble person.
  • Spell My Name With An S: While her name has consistently being translated as Emilia (it helps is a fairly common name even in real life), her surname has been translated as Ludowell, Rudewell, Ludwell or even Roodwell. The official website and subtitles of the anime finally refer to her as Emilia Ludowell, the one who is considered the official spelling of the character.
  • Taking the Bullet: Despite having tried to kill Izabella before, the now half-demon Emilia takes a blast of fire that was aimed at the former, leaving her with a scorched back. Not only does Izabella help her recover from these injuries, Emilia also gets redeemed.
  • Technicolor Fire: Her flame spells are depicted as black and purple, unlike the black and red fire other characters cast.
  • Tears of Remorse: After being forcedly reincarnated into a hybrid demon and left to be a victim of the same bigotry she advocated for when she was a pure-blooded demon, Emilia starts to shed tears after Izabella saves her and Anos did not kill her on request. Out of confusion, she sobs and asks herself on what to do.
  • This Cannot Be!: She freaks out the moment she comes to the realization that Anos reincarnated her into a Human-Demon Hybrid.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She was already a major bitch, but after seeing Anos beat her brother, her mind started taking a massive decline in what little sanity she had. Once Anos comes in and works his magic, she effectively enters a Villainous BSoD, screaming and crying at her fate.
  • Villainous BSoD: After her racist approach towards half-demons and assaulting Anos's classmates and mother, Anos himself warps her to the arena to kill her there and revive her nude in the form of a half-demon. Unwilling to accept this humiliation she attempts to cut her throat out only for Anos to point out that dying will not free her of the half-demon curse. After he warps away with nothing to cover her, she prostrates and does a screaming cry as she now will face the same kind of prejudice she endorsed before.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When Anos throws her to the ground of the arena, he fatally wounds her and explains to her that she has around a minute to live. She initially does not beg, but he twists his blade which culminates in her begging for mercy as she is bleeding out with Anos telling her to be louder about it. Ultimately, he stabs her to death before permanently reincarnating her into a half-demon.

    Meno Historia

Meno Historia

Voiced by: Ai Kakuma (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English)

The homeroom teacher for Class 3-1, who also takes up teaching Anos' class after Emilia was kicked out. Despite being pureblooded, she holds no hatred for hybrids or humans, always treating Anos and his friends respectfully.

  • Cool Teacher: In addition to being a caring and respectful authority figure, she's also quite personable, willing to be supportive towards each and every student she teaches and having a bit of a playful side.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gets kidnapped during events adapted into episode 2 of the anime's second season, which leads to Misha and Sasha trying to save her.
  • A Mother to Her Men: She genuinely cares for and appreciates every one of her students, and is fully willing to risk her life for their safety.
  • Pointy Ears: She's a bit notable among the named demons due to her having prominently pointed ears, something that almost none of the other characters have.
  • Redeeming Replacement: She takes up Emilia's teaching role after she leaves and is pretty much everything that woman wasn't. She treats hybrids equally, truly cares for her students' well-being, and overall is just a very friendly and personable woman.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Where most teachers scorn and refuse to acknowledge Anos due to his hybrid status, she doesn't do any of that, always respecting his abilities and never insulting him.

Seven Elder Demon Emperors

    In General

Seven Elder Demon Emperors

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seven_elder_demon_emperors.png
Foreground: Ivis Necron (left), Melheis Boran (right); Background: (from left to right): Gaios Anzem, Medoin Garsa, Eldora Zaia, Ydol Anzeo, Zorro Angart.
Seven demons created from Anos's blood in order to expand his bloodline so he could reincarnate properly. They hold a big influence in the demon society and are respected by all of the demonkind. They also act as teachers from the Demon King Academy from time to time, which they founded in order to raise the next generation of demon lords.
  • Animorphism: Ivis and Melheis show the ability to transform into a cat and an owl respectively. While the others don't show the ability to become animals, their roles are so minor that they don't get the chance to show any magical abilities, let alone transformations.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: They spend the first 3 volumes having their minds and Sources under the control of Avos Dilhevia (A.K.A. Lay pretending to be Avos), with Anos needing to beat them and cleanse their Sources to return them to their true selves.
  • Minor Major Character: They are very important figures in the setting of the novel, but except for Ivis and Melheis, the other five display a small role in the series and barely get characterization.
  • Our Homunculi Are Different: They are artificial demons created through magic, instead of normal reproduction. Despite that, they can reproduce like any natural being and were able to give origin to all of the current demons that inhabit Dilhaide nowadays.

    Ivis Necron

Ivis Necron

Voiced by: Ryōtarō Okiayu (Japanese), Joshua Tomar (English)
The first of the Seven Elder Demon Emperors to appear on the series, a lich specialized in fusion magic, as well as the head of the Necron family and a teacher of the Academy, teaching Great Magic.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Demon King Academy arc, being the first big villain of the series too. While he at first tries to stay neutral towards Anos, he ends antagonizing him when Anos decides to foil his plan of fusing the Necron sisters.
  • Our Liches Are Different: Despite looking like the typical undead mage (and is implied he used some magic to end in his current skeletical state), Ivis actually specializes in fusion magic and doesn't show necromantic abilities. He's also more fond of fighting with a sword than using magic to fight too.
  • Was Once a Man: Anos' inner monologue in the web novel and the light novel has him commenting that Ivis seemed to become an undead in the period of time between his death and reincarnation, implying Ivis had a more human-like appearance back in the past.
  • Voice of the Legion: His voice in the anime is depicted as deep and reverberating, which makes him more intimidating. Is implied his voice sounds like that due talking with the mouth-shaped object he holds on his chest, rather than with his actual mouth (that looks very decayed and misses the lower half).

Inhabitants of Midhaze

    Zepes Indu

Zepes Indu

Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (Japanese), Zeno Robinson (English)
A pureblood demon duke from the Indu family. He's the first enemy Anos faces in the story after reincarnating in the modern era, facing him in the practical exam to join the Demon King Academy Delzogade.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He has tanned skin, contrasting the paler complexion of his brother. Nothing is commented on this.
  • Break the Haughty: While he starts confident and cocky during his fight with Anos, the overwhelming power his rival shows through it is enough to make him surrender in pure fear and never want to have anything to do with the guy ever again.
  • Come Back Wrong: In order to teach Leorg a lesson about how magic battles truly are, Anos revives Zepes (who was previously killed by Leorg for losing against an hybrid) as a zombie and sends him against his brother to test their brotherly bond. Though both of them end dying at the end, Anos ends reviving both brothers normally, and encourages them to face him again when they become stronger, to their horror.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: On the receiving end by Anos during their fight in the practical exam. It's so one-sided calling it a battle would be a serious exageration.
  • Jerkass: In his very first scene he antagonizes Anos and Misha only cause they brought up their parents (or a caretaker in the case of Misha) to the entrance of the academy, and quickly shows to be an arrogant asshole.
  • Power at a Price: Thanks to Anos turning him into a zombie, Zepes' magical power increases considerably, but he's reduced to a mindless zombie feeling nothing but hatred towards the one who killed him (in this case, his brother Leorg).
  • Playing with Fire: He's able to cast fire spells that, according to him, are able to burn "even the gods". Given how Anos gets surprised of how weak it is, it's probably Zepes was just being a loudmouth.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: As a result of having considerably more magical power than the average demon, he thinks he's the real deal and can bully anyone he wants. Anos quickly proves he's not that special during their "fight" in the practical exam.
  • Starter Villain: As the very first villains of the series, he and his brother are a pair of haughty buffoons that, while strong compared to most other demons, are easily dispatched by Anos, and are not seen again after being dealt with.
  • Technicolor Fire: His flames are black and purple colored after being brought back as a zombie, rather than the black and red he normally displays.

    Leorg Indu

Leorg Indu

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana (Japanese), Nazeeh Tarsha (English)
A demon lord royalist and head of the Indu family. After the defeat of his brother at the hands of Anos, he interferes in the practical exam to make Anos pay for sullying the honor of his family.
  • Aloof Big Brother: He's stronger and more dangerous than Zepes, and is at best dismissive of his younger brother and at worst outright murderous. If the flashbacks he has when a zombified Zepes is about to kill him are indicative of something, he and Zepes were close at some point, but ended distancing with the time.
  • Break the Haughty: While not as bad as the humiliation Zepes suffered, he's still soundly defeated by Anos (who even was unnafected by his strongest spell) and eventually is forced to scream the name of his brother to save his own life when he was about to kill him as a zombie.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Losing against a hybrid is unforgivable for him, so seeing how badly his brother lost to one is enough reason to execute him without remorse.
  • Karmic Death: Is killed by a zombified Zepes after murdering him previously. Of course, Anos being there, he gets better.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: By the standards of the modern Dilhaide, Leorg is a monster with a lot of magical power that can probably beat most of the students of the Demon King Academy, and can even cast Origin Magic, magic that is considered super dangerous and only a few can use. However, Anos considers him extremely weak compared to the demons from his era, and even thinks he wouldn't last long if he would be placed in the Mythical Era. Naturally, when he's put to fight someone of the likes of Anos, he ends utterly defeated.
  • Shock and Awe: His magic primarily centers about casting lighting attacks.
  • Starter Villain: As the very first villains of the series, he and his brother are a pair of haughty buffoons that, while strong compared to most other demons, are easily dispatched by Anos, and are not seen again after being dealt with.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As a pureblood demon, he possesses a great amount of magical power that puts most of his fellow demons to shame, and is worth mentioning that, in the first season of the anime, he's the only character other than Anos to cast Origin Magic, that is considered an amazing feat In-Universe. However, his lack of knowledge almost ends being his downfall, as, due not knowing the basics of Origin Magic, he ends shooting an attack that nearly costs his life to the origin of the very magic he casted (Anos), that in that case, is completely useless, as Origin Magic cannot affect the source it originates from.
  • You Have Failed Me: Murders Zepes in cold blood cause he was defeated by a mixed blood demon in the practical exam to join Demon King Academy.
  • Yellow Lightning, Blue Lightning: His lightning attacks are depicted as black with a red outline.
