    Cynthia Goodsky

Cynthia Goodsky

Debut: Volume 1 (Novel), Chapter 33 (Webcomic)

The Director of Xyrus Academy and an old friend of Virion Eralith, Goodsky is one of the most powerful mages on Dicathen. She becomes Tessia's mentor as the latter matures and makes her the Student Council President of the academy.

  • Badass Teacher: The headmistress of the foremost Magical Academy in Dicathen, Goodsky is not only a kindly and sagacious individual but her status as a silver core mage makes her one of the most powerful mages in the continent other than the Lances. It turns out part of the reason for her creating the academy in the first place was to strengthen Dicathen's population against the inevitable Alacryan invasion, however long it took to happen.
  • Blow You Away: Her elemental affinity is in wind magic.
  • Cool Old Lady: While she is an old lady, Goodsky is a silver core mage stronger than even Virion.
  • Foil: To Rahdeas. Both are elderly individuals who have ties to the Vritra Clan and Alacrya which has led them to keep everyone around them Locked Out of the Loop and have acted as a Parental Substitute to one of Arthur's closest friends. Goodsky is a former Alacryan spy who turned against her people and wound up Going Native in Dicathen to prepare its inhabitants against her people's inevitable invasion and as Tessia's mentor has become somewhat of a surrogate grandmother to her. Rahdeas on the other hand is a native Dicathian turned The Quisling and raised Elijah as a Tyke Bomb as part of his role in Agrona's overall plan.
  • Geas: As a former Alacryan spy, she had a spell placed upon her that would prevent her from disclosing anything about their plans. When Aldir attempts to remove it from her, it causes her to fall into a coma. Ultimately, she never wakes up from her coma as she is killed right as the Alacryans invade.
  • Going Native: Despite being sent to Dicathen as an Alacryan spy, Goodsky turned against her people and settled into her life in the other continent in order to prepare it for their inevitable invasion.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She resorts to torturing Alacryan spies sent after her by the Vritra.
  • Good Wears White: Some of her dresses are predominantly white in color.
  • He Knows Too Much: Given her background as a former Alacryan spy, Goodsky naturally becomes one of the Council's foremost sources of information on their enemy once she is acquitted of the Kangaroo Court they put her through. However, her handlers were forward-thinking regarding any would-be defectors, as not only is she unable to disclose much information due to her Geas, but she ends up falling into a coma following a failed attempt to remove it. A coma that she ultimately never wakes up from as she is found dead in her sickbed having been impaled by black metal spikes. And she would only be the first example...
  • Hiding Your Heritage: As a former Alacryan spy, Goodsky is forced to hide her origins from practically everyone around her. Eventually, when the Vritra instigate the attack on Xyrus Academy, Goodsky's heritage is revealed and she gets taken into custody on the orders of the Council, who are also being manipulated by the Vritra. Even after her conviction is overturned, there are still a few Dicathians who perceive her as a spy.
  • Kangaroo Court: Amidst the attack on Xyrus Academy, Goodsky ends up being arrested, imprisoned, and eventually convicted of terrorism by the Council. This as turns out is due to the manipulations of the Vritra who intend to neutralize her. However, after Windsom and Aldir purge the Council of corruption, Goodsky's conviction is overturned.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Due to keeping her Alacryan origins secret and covertly dealing with other spies on her own, let alone the Geas that was placed upon her preventing her from confessing, Goodsky keeps practically everyone around her out of the loop regarding her true motivations. Although Arthur does pick up on the fact that Goodsky is hiding something from him, especially given her reaction to when he presents Alea's dog tags to her, a reaction that she exhibits out of shock over the fact her former Alacryan overlords are moving much faster than she anticipated.
    • Inverted later on. When she is acquitted of the Kangaroo Court, the aforementioned Geas prevents her from disclosing any information about the Vritra Clan and Alacrya without severe backlash, and the Council only manages to extract a few bits of information from her before an attempt to remove the curse by Aldir results in her being put into a coma.
  • Make Some Noise: Considering her base elemental affinity in wind magic, Goodsky demonstrates unparalleled mastery over its deviant form, sound magic. Her mastery of sound magic allows her to address the entire auditorium at the start of the new student orientation.
  • The Mentor: She takes Tessia under her wing as her disciple in accordance to the elven educational system.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Following the attack on Xyrus Academy, Goodsky is taken into custody by the Council, who are being manipulated by Agrona and the Vritra. Although she is later acquitted of the charges, when Aldir attempts to remove the Geas that was placed on her she is put into a coma, one which she never wakes up from as upon the arrival of the Alacryan fleet to Dicathen she is found dead in her sickbed having been impaled by the signature black spikes of the Vritra.
  • Never Mess with Granny: To put how strong Goodsky is in perspective, Virion says it would take six or seven of her, a high-silver core mage, to hold off a mid-white core mage, wherein it would take ten of him, a mid-silver core mage, to do the same and that is just him being optimistic. She is able to hold off an ambush by a group of Alacryan spies, albeit with a little help from her bond Avier.
  • Old Master: Like Virion, Goodsky is one of the strongest mages in Dicathen despite her rather advanced age.
  • Parental Substitute: Tessia views her as her surrogate grandmother, especially since her biological grandmother Lania died long before she was born.
  • Secret-Keeper: She is aware of Arthur having been the masked adventurer Note, as when Arthur brings up how he made an enemy of Lucas she reveals she had reviewed the proceedings of Lucas's hearing.
  • Shipper on Deck: She frequently teases Arthur and Tessia about their relationship.
  • Token Heroic Orc: She is an Alacryan who has rebelled against her people and the Vritra.
  • Training from Hell: Goodsky's training regimen is known for being rather harsh and difficult, with the few disciples that she has taken on beforehand having failed to complete it. Only Tessia has been able to pass it as her desire to catch up with Arthur has driven her to succeed.
Goodsky: My training regimen is not easy; the few who have tried before her have all failed. [Tessia] is only able to keep up and continue because of her desire to catch up to you, Arthur.
  • Wham Shot: In the Webcomic version, after finishing off the last of the Alacryan spies sent after her, Goodsky turns around revealing a tear on the back of her robes. Said tear reveals that she has the same bloody Power Tattoos that the Radicals have been found wearing, revealing her to be an Alacryan herself.
  • Witch Classic: She resembles the classic depiction of a witch.

    Avier

Avier

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel)

Director Goodsky's bond. Despite appearing to be an owl, Avier is in fact a wyvern.

  • The Bus Came Back: After disappearing in the aftermath of the attack on Xyrus and Goodsky's death, Avier resurfaces near the end of Volume 10 when he arrives to establish contact between Arthur and the Hearth.
  • Our Wyverns Are Different: His true form is that of a wyvern, a species that descended from the dragons.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: He poses as an owl and is the familiar of one of the most powerful mages on Dicathen. Not only that, but as a wyvern he is a lot more intelligent than he lets on.
  • Sapient Pet: As a wyvern, Avier is sapient unlike most bonds.
  • Shapeshifting: As wyverns are related to dragons, Avier has their requisite shapeshifting powers.

    Gideon

Gideon

Debut: Volume 2 (Novel), Chapter 77

Considered the best artificer in all of Dicathen, Gideon is sought out by the highest echelons on the continent for his expertise. He becomes Arthur's go-to technological benefactor that he can approach whenever he needs any requisite favors or artifacts. During Arthur's time in Xyrus Academy, Gideon becomes the teacher in charge of his Basics of Artificing class. In the leadup to the War Arc and onward, he becomes the head of the wartime research effort.

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Is easily distracted when it comes to his work. Oftentimes Emily has to bail him out from his shortcomings.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Gideon is extremely eccentric, but as the top artificer in Dicathen the royal families frequently come to him when they are in need of advanced artifacts.
  • Einstein Hair: Gideon's hair is unkempt and frays out to the sides much like Einstein himself.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Gideon's eyes sport eye bags, a sign of how fervent he is when it comes to his work.
  • Foil: To Wren. Both are eccentric yet renowned artificers who serve as The Smart Guy and have near-identical appearances (with the main difference being that Gideon has Einstein Hair while Wren has long hair), but while Gideon is an egotistical Insufferable Genius whose creations and experiments are volatile thanks to him expediting his process, Wren is a serious and harsh individual who tends to stay away from the spotlight and his creations tend to be much more reliable and effective thanks to him spending much time analyzing the scenarios and specifications for their creation. Fittingly, Arthur has them both work together, where Gideon's eccentricity clashes with Wren's seriousness.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: As an artificer, Gideon is capable of creating a wide range of artifacts.
  • Insufferable Genius: As the foremost artificer on Dicathen, Gideon has quite the ego to match his reputation. When he introduces himself to his class, he spends so much time rambling about his own credentials that Arthur ends up having to leave when Avier arrives to summon him to Director Goodsky's office.
  • Kidnapped Scientist: He and Emily were briefly kidnapped by the Alacryans and forced to work for them, but were later rescued by Jasmine.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Given his status as the resident Mad Scientist, Gideon wears a labcoat despite how anachronistic it would be for the setting.
  • Mad Scientist: Despite the medieval fantasy setting, Gideon resembles the stock mad scientist complete with ragged hair and anachronistic labcoat.
  • The Professor: He is an eccentric artificer who is the foremost magitechnological expert in Dicathen, and he uses his intellect and expertise to devise any sort of artifact that anyone asks of him.
  • Spotting the Thread: Upon investigating the wreck of a mysterious ship that resembles the Dicatheous that has washed up on the shores of the Beast Glades, Gideon notes that there are no signs of his handiwork, in particular the myriad signatures he would have placed as part of his own ego. He realizes then that this ship was a reproduction of the Dicatheous made by the Alacryans, who have somehow reverse-engineered its blueprints for their own use.
  • The Team Benefactor: Acts as one on the magitechnological side. His genius leads to him creating various artifacts and devices for Arthur and his allies to use.

    Vanesy Glory

Vanesy Glory

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 96 (Webcomic)

The teacher for team strategies in Xyrus Academy. She can use both fire and earth magic. In the War Arc, she becomes a military leader that Arthur finds himself working alongside.

  • The Bus Came Back: She returns in Volume 10 when Arthur recaptures Xyrus from the Alacryans.
  • Class Trip: She leads one into Widow's Crypt at the climax of Volume 3 of the novel. It ends up having Gone Horribly Wrong as they encounter much stronger mana beasts than they were expecting.
  • Mr. Exposition: Acts as one to Arthur by filling him in on what happened during the attack on Xyrus Academy before he arrived and the fates of the members of the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She is an Action Girl who wears her hair in this fashion.

    Geist

Geist

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 85 (Webcomic)

A former adventurer, Geist is the professor of Arthur's Practical Mana Manipulation class.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the Webcomic, he makes an early cameo as Arthur is walking home from visiting the Dicatheous and ends up getting on his bad side. This serves to explain why his initial demonstration went awry as he was looking to get back at Arthur for that past incident.
  • Named by the Adaptation: In the original novel, the professor of Arthur's Practical Mana Manipulation class goes unnamed. In the Webcomic, he is named Geist. A later rewrite to Volume 3 carried over his name.
  • Playing with Fire: His elemental affinity.

    Avius

Avius

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 92 (Webcomic)

The professor of Arthur's Fundamentals of Mana Theory class.

Student Council

For Tessia, see the Royal Families page. For Lilia, see the Leywin Family page.

    Clive Graves

Clive Graves

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 86 (Webcomic)

The Vice President of the Xyrus Academy Student Council.

  • Bullying a Dragon: He should have heeded Tessia's pleading when he went to reprimand Arthur. It resulted in him being thrown straight up in the air.
  • Expy: Given the parallels to Mushoku Tensei, Clive is meant to be the Luke Greyrat to Tessia's Princess Ariel and Sylphiette, being her right-hand on campus.

    Jarrod Redner

Jarrod Redner

Debut: Volume 2 (Novel), Chapter 86 (Webcomic)

The Treasurer of the Xyrus Academy Student Council.

  • Adaptational Late Appearance: In the novel, he first appears as one of the guests at Eleanor's birthday party. In the Webcomic, his appearance there is entirely omitted with him first showing up at the new student orientation.
  • Back for the Dead: After not having been seen since the attack on Xyrus back in Volume 4, Jarrod reappears in Volume 11 where he is escorting a convoy alongside Lilia that gets attacked by the Wraiths. He gets killed not long afterwards for trying to listen in on their plans.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: He dies with Lilia, his former crush from their days in Xyrus Academy, right beside him.
  • He Knows Too Much: The Wraiths kill him for trying to eavesdrop on their plans.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He tries to court Lilia but she only has eyes for Arthur.
  • Profane Last Words: His very last word is him cursing out "Shit" when he realizes that the Wraiths have gotten to him.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Despite not being killed by the Wraiths in their initial attack, Jarrod tries to covertly find out what they are doing. Before he knows it, he has a fatal injury in his chest and collapses to the ground dead.

Disciplinary Committee

For Arthur, see his separate character page. For Curtis and Kathyln, see the Royal Families page.

    In General
  • Badass Crew: The Disciplinary Committee is composed of the strongest students on campus. That being said, the "on campus" part is important as they are woefully outmached by much stronger threats.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: The Disciplinary Committee is all but dissolved in the aftermath of the attack on Xyrus Academy. Doradrea and Theodore were killed, Kai was revealed to be a traitor, Claire retired from combat due to her Career-Ending Injury, and Feyrith vanished. That left Arthur, Curtis, and Kathyln, and the first of these had to leave Dicathen for Epheotus in order to train for the impending Alacryan invasion.
  • Bully Hunter: Their purpose is to keep the peace in the academy by resolving disputes and quelling instances of racism.
  • Custom Uniform: They wear a unique black uniform with gold highlights to distinguish them from the other students of the academy.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: When Director Goodsky is propositioning to Arthur to get him to join the Disciplinary Committee, the silhouettes of the human members of the committee are shown.
  • Dwindling Party: As of the latest volume, only Arthur, Curtis, and Kathyln are still active. Claire has retired from combat due to her Career-Ending Injury, and Kai's whereabouts after his treachery are unrevealed. The rest have all been killed off.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: While the Disciplinary Committee has their own distinct uniforms, each uniform is personalized to match each member, some moreso than others to match this trope. This is especially apparent with the female members; Claire has Proper Tights with a Skirt, Kathyln has a skirt with stockings, and Doradrea wears a short-sleeved shirt and trousers. On the other hand for the male members, they mostly follow the exact same general layout with minimal differences to the point of all but Averting this trope. The only exception is Theodore, who like Doradrea bares his forearms.

    Claire Bladeheart

Claire Bladeheart

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 91 (Webcomic)

"Let's show all of the entitled students out there what they'll be up against if they choose to break the rules!"

The leader of the Disciplinary Committee, Claire is the niece of Kaspian Bladeheart. She is a fifth-year augmenter with a dual attribute in both fire and wind.

  • Belated Injury Realization: As the attack on Xyrus Academy nears its climax, Claire spots Kai escaping back to Alacrya along with the rest of the Radicals. She is about to stop them when she suddenly cannot hear anything. As Claire looks around and sees the anguished faces of her friends, she then looks down to see a stone spike jutting out of her stomach.
  • Blood from the Mouth: When she gets impaled In the Back, blood is shown coming from her mouth.
  • Broken Ace: When introduced, Claire was a relative prodigy for her age, being a Master Swordswoman like the rest of her family and a dual attribute augmenter. Then comes the attack on Xyrus Academy, which she is not only powerless to stop but ends up being rendered powerless herself in the aftermath. While she ended up being a ghost of who she had been for a while, she eventually regains her initiative and makes as much of a comeback as she can.
  • Blow You Away: One of her elemental attributes.
  • The Bus Came Back: A two-time example just like her uncle. In the novel, Claire's fate after the attack on Xyrus in Volume 4 is left uncertain until Volume 6, when it is revealed she survived but has been in seclusion due to the loss of her mana corenote . She makes a second reappearance in Volume 11, where it is revealed she has signed up for the secret project Gideon and Wren are working on.
  • Career-Ending Injury: After the loss of her mana core, she is unable to participate in the war outside of training soldiers in swordsmanship.
  • Covered in Scars: When she returns in Volume 11, Claire is shown to have a lot of scars around her midriff over the large scar she received during the attack on Xyrus Academy.
  • De-power: Due to the injuries she sustained during the attack on Xyrus, Claire's mana core was damaged beyond recovery.
  • Fan Disservice: When she reappears in Volume 11, Claire is wearing nothing but a strip and leather breeches. However, her exposed midriff is Covered in Scars, not just the one she received during the attack on Xyrus Academy but also newer ones she has received since. Not to mention when Curtis eyes her he ends up having a painful reminder of what happened then before forcing himself to look at her face.
  • Fiery Redhead: Claire has bright red hair and radiates an air of upbeat friendliness and passion.
  • Flaming Sword: As a fire-attribute augmenter, Claire is able to engulf her sword in fire.
  • The Idol's Blessing: Her enthusiasm for the Lances and desire to join their ranks gets her the approval of Lance Alea.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Gets impaled in the chest during the attack on Xyrus Academy. She barely manages to survive.
  • In the Back: Gets impaled from behind during the attack on Xyrus Academy.
  • The Leader: Of the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Master Swordswoman: The Bladehearts, as their name attests, are renowned for their skill at the sword. Claire is no exception.
  • Near-Death Experience: Despite being impaled during the attack on Xyrus Academy, Claire barely manages to hold onto life. She makes it through, but at the cost of her mana core.
  • Playing with Fire: Her other elemental attribute.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Her uniform combines both a skirt and pants.
  • Scars Are Forever: The scar she receives from being impaled during the attack on Xyrus never heals and remains a constant part of her character. It serves as a painful reminder to both herself and especially Curtis over their failing to stop the attack in the first place.
  • Squee: Claire looks up to the Lances and aspires to become one of them. In the Webcomic, when she meets Alea and Bairon she is honored to be in the presence of some of her idols. After Alea gives Claire her approval, Claire is shown blushing in response to the compliment.

    Doradrea Oreguard

Doradrea Oreguard

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 91 (Webcomic)

"Bah! Another delicate pretty boy! Why aren't there more real men in this committee?"

    Feyrith Ivsaar III

Feyrith Ivsaar III

Debut: Volume 1 (Novel), Chapter 25 (Webcomic)

"Look who we have here! If it isn't Princess Kathyln and my rival, Arthur Leywin."
An elven noble who Arthur met during his childhood in Elenoir. Years later, he would cross paths with Arthur as part of the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Back for the Dead: After not having been seen since the attack on Xyrus in Volume 4, Feyrith returns at the end of Volume 8 as one of the elves rescued from Alacryan captivity, only to for him to end up as one of the casualties of Taci’s rampage at the end of Volume 9 (with his death only being revealed at the start of the following volume).
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • After a brief role during the events of Volume 1, Feyrith reappears in Volume 3 as one of the members of the Disciplinary Committee.
    • After not being mentioned since the attack on Xyrus in Volume 4. Feyrith returns at the end of Volume 8 as one of the elves Tessia and her party rescue from Alacryan captivity. Over the course of the next volume, he goes on to enlist Eleanor in exposing the asuras’ attempts to manipulate the resistance.
  • Butt-Monkey: Of the Disciplinary Committee. Theodore mentions Feyrith fell face down when he fell for his Crushing Handshake. Later on during the Practical Mana Manipulation class, Feyrith is the first to volunteer for Professor Geist’s demonstration (itself a bid to get back at Arthur) and gets trounced. The Webcomic also adds a scene during a montage of Arthur’s time in Xyrus Academy where Feyrith is on the ground while the rest of the Disciplinary Committee are laughing at him.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Feyfey".
  • Making a Splash: His affinity is in water magic.
  • Prodigal Hero: Subverted hard. Volume 9 reveals that Feyrith is a textbook prodigal son. The fourth son of House Ivsaar, Feyrith left his family against their wishes to attend Xyrus Academy. However, not only does he feel guilty over the attack on Xyrus, but he feels especially guilty over the fact that he failed to save his family when they got caught up in the destruction of Elenoir.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Despite being a comedic foil in his earlier appearances, Feyrith disappears after the attack on Xyrus, but is established to have survived. By the time he resurfaces at the end of Volume 8, he has been broken by all the misfortune that has befallen the elves since (especially after the destruction of Elenoir) and is no longer a source of comic relief. The start of Volume 10 reveals he was among the casualties of Taci’s rampage at the end of the last volume.
  • Unknown Rival: Is Arthur’s self-proclaimed rival, which stems from their brief interaction during his childhood stay in Elenoir.

    Theodore Maxwell

Theodore Maxwell

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 91 (Webcomic)

"Hmph. Seems the Disciplinary Committee has stooped low enough to recruit twerps."

  • The Big Guy: Is the largest member of the Disciplinary Committee, being over six and a half feet tall.
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: Is the second member of the Disciplinary Committee to die during the attack on Xyrus.
  • Crushing Handshake: His way of greeting - or rather hazing - new recruits to the Disciplinary Committee has him offer his hand out to them only to use gravity magic to bring them down to the floor. Arthur manages to avoid being brought down. Feyrith was not so lucky.
  • Gravity Master: His elemental affinity.
  • Profane Last Words: His last words are him barely being able to curse out "Motherfucker" at Draneeve, though it is cut off.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Despite being one of the most powerful members of the Disciplinary Committee, he ends up being killed by Draneeve.

    Kai Crestless

Kai Crestless

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 91 (Webcomic)

A rather shifty individual, Kai is the one to welcome Arthur to the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: His presence makes Arthur feel uneasy (especially since Arthur can't sense his powers), he suspiciously takes up bigger patrols than the other members of the committee all on his own, and at one point, when Arthur asks him about his unique powers, he casually threatens to kill him. Sure enough, he is revealed to be The Mole for the Radicals. The Webcomic version makes his true colors all the more obvious by giving him a perpetual sinister leer on his face that screams Smug Snake.
  • Foreshadowing: His Devil in Plain Sight nature aside, Kai's surname is the first hint towards the Alacryan bestowal system, and his remarks about blood allude to how the Alacryans place great importance on one's blood given their Vritra overlords.
  • Hiding Your Heritage: Is in fact an Alacryan spy sent to infiltrate Dicathen.
  • The Mole: Is the informant within the Disciplinary Committee for the Radicals. He reveals his treachery during the attack on Xyrus by sabotaging the barrier the Disciplinary Committee tried to set up.
  • Razor Floss: His unique mana art allows him to conjure metal wires that he uses in this manner.
  • Traitor Shot: The Webcomic adds a montage of Arthur’s time in Xyrus Academy wherein Kai is standing apart from the rest of the Disciplinary Committee as they laugh at Feyrith. A rather obvious sign that he is up to something behind their backs.

Other Students

    Emily Watsken

Emily Watsken

Debut: Volume 3 (Novel), Chapter 95 (Webcomic)

"For me, I really loved artificing, so I end up fiddling around with a lot of gadgets!"

A scholar mage student who Arthur meets in his Basics of Artificing class, Emily is a shy and awkward girl who is nonetheless a skilled and intelligent inventor and artificer. Due to her magitechnological expertise, she goes on to become Gideon’s assistant from the War Arc onward.

  • Beleaguered Assistant: To Gideon. As she puts it:
Emily: Don’t call him "Professor". My nutjob of a master can hardly be considered sane, let alone a proper educator of future generations. I swear, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to dig my master out from under a pile of debris and useless junk after an explosion he caused.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Despite having glasses and freckles, she is noted to be rather cute with the glasses making her endearing.
  • Child Prodigy: She invented the projection disc artifact that was used to broadcast the announcement of the Council and is still in school.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She is one of the four leads of the Interquel novel, Volume 8.5.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Being an aspiring artificer, Emily has been playing around with gadgets ever since her youth.
  • Kidnapped Scientist: She and Gideon were briefly kidnapped by the Alacryans and forced to work for them, but were later rescued by Jasmine.
  • Lovable Nerd: Is very friendly and endearing despite her intellectual interests.
  • Meganekko: She is a cute girl who wears glasses.
  • Motor Mouth: When she first meets Arthur, she speeds through all of his credentials at lightning speed as her response to his complimenting of her.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: When she brings up to Arthur how news travels fast in Xyrus Academy, in particular his defeat of Professor Geist which only occurred in his last class, her glasses briefly obscure her eyes as she gives him a sly grin.
  • Shrinking Violet: Is very, very shy. Arthur reaching out his hand to her causes her to blush in embarassment.
  • The Smart Guy: In the leadup to the War Arc and onward, Emily is taken under Gideon's wing to assist him with developing new innovations for the war effort. Later on, the duo are joined by the exiled asura Wren.

    Lucas Wykes

Lucas Wykes

Debut: Volume 2 (Novel), Chapter 49 (Webcomic)

"Don't get cocky just because we happened to be ranked in the same class. Even within ranks there are levels, and you commoners would be at the bottom. And don't you forget it."

A younger son of the influential and powerful House Wykes, Lucas is a half-elf who despite his lineage is a prodigious fire mage. He and Arthur first meet when the latter goes to the Adventurers' Guild Hall in Xyrus to get examined as adventurer. The two cross paths again years later as both find themselves in the same adventuring party bound for the dungeon known as the Dire Tombs. Later on, Lucas would go on to menace Arthur during his time in Xyrus Academy.

  • Arch-Enemy: To Arthur during his time in Xyrus Academy.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Combined with Body Horror. In their final confrontation, Arthur promptly slices his left arm off. Then freeze-burns his right arm. Then crushes his left leg. And his right leg. And his pelvis. Needless to say, Lucas doesn’t survive.
  • Big Brother Worship: At the very least, his older brother Bairon is the only person he fears and the only one he doesn’t look down on.
  • Bullying a Dragon:
    • The very last mistake Lucas ever does is threatening to desecrate the incapacitated Tessia's body right in front of her Love Interest Arthur. This transgression, on top of the carnage Lucas had caused during the attack, is what leads Arthur to end his life right on the spot.
    • Ironically, right before the attack began, Lucas was on the receiving end of this trope. After taking one of the Radicals' elixirs, Lucas collapsed to the ground from the strain which caused his fellow Radicals including his former lackey Charles to mock him both as a weakling and a half-blood. Unfortunately for them, Lucas was not done for just yet, and as a demonstration of his newfound power he proceeded to kill all of them on the spot for their insults.
  • Child Prodigy: Lucas awakened when he was just eight years old and a few years later had become a talented fire mage despite being a half-elf. He is a darker example of this trope in that his magical prowess was caused by his harsh upbringing and having to take strengthening elixirs to enhance his power.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Lucas is prone to fighting dirty if that is what it takes for him to get what he wants. A notable example would be how he attacks the examiner who had been testing him when her back is turned and she declares the examination over.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: To Draco Malfoy. Both are the young and arrogant blonde-haired scions of a powerful and corrupt noble family who acts as the main character's rival during their time in the Magical Academy. However, while Draco's pestering of Harry does not lead to severe harm and he eventually moves away from his abusive father and his Fantastic Racism, Lucas not only never breaks free of his corrupt family's mindset and he only gets progressively viler as an individual, but his actions lead to people dying in droves, both unintentionally and intentionally. The Webcomic even gives Lucas his own analogues to Draco's lackeys Crabbe and Goyle in the form of Charles and Marcois (though it does not last long as Marcois dies shortly after being introduced).
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Arthur burns off his left arm, then freezes and shatters his right arm, and then, perhaps as a response to his threat of desecrating Tessia, proceeds to give him a gravity magic-empowered Finishing Stomp to crush his pelvic region into nothingness.
  • Dirty Coward: In the Dire Tombs, Lucas was willing to use his own party members as live bait so that he could escape, and afterwards had hired mercenaries to kill off the survivors so that they would not speak out against him.
  • Dramatic Irony: Despite not knowing Arthur is the same masked adventurer whom he came to blows with, Lucas still develops an enmity with him as he believes Arthur stole his spot on the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Driven by Envy: After learning that Arthur, a mere commoner without the benefit of Lucas's expensive training and elixirs, is stronger than he is, he becomes determined to take Arthur down which later costs him greatly.
  • Elemental Embodiment: His Signature Spell, Flame Guardian, allows him to summon a massive fire elemental to protect him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When he is first introduced during Arthur's visit to the Adventurers' Guild Hall to get examined for his adventurer's license, Lucas mocks Diane for her clumsiness by saying it is a waste of time. Then when he is called up for his own examination, he acts in a prideful fashion, calls out the examiner for her apparent lack of respect towards him, and after she signals the end of the exam even goes so far as to attack her as he believes the exam is not over yet. Afterward, Lucas is seen sulking in the benches having insulted the other examinees and murmuring about how his father will react. In the process, Lucas cements himself as a haughty and arrogant individual who views himself superior to everyone else. And he would only get worse from there.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Despite joining a terrorist group and committing numerous atrocities during the attack, after Arthur kills him, Lucas's brother Bairon is absolutely furious and would have killed Arthur on the spot if not for the other Lances stopping him.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: The other Radicals, being racists, look down on Lucas for being a half-elf.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Is a half-elf, with his mother having been one of the Wykes' elven slaves.
  • Hate Sink: Given his haughty arrogant demeanor and unwillingness to take responsibility for himself, Lucas is one of the most reviled characters in the novel. In particular, his actions during the Dire Tombs and afterward are what cement Arthur and the audience's hatred of him.
  • The Heavy: Takes up this role for the Radicals during their attack on Xyrus Academy as one of their strongest members, especially since he had taken a stronger version of their elixirs. In the process, Lucas kills off many students and faculty on top of injuring much more.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Dwarfed by his brother’s power and prestige, Lucas is so obsessed with living up to the Wykes name and not wasting the money his parents spent on various drugs and mana cores to make him stronger that he developed an insufferably arrogant personality and commits absolutely heinous acts to prove he is not a loser.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: He gets away practically scot-free for his actions in the Dire Tombs thanks to his corrupt family's influence, with the only penalty he suffers being the loss of his adventurer's license. When Arthur confronts him at the climax of the attack on Xyrus, where he has killed several students and faculty, Arthur finally makes him pay for all the suffering he caused in a rather graphic fashion.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: After taking the elixir, Lucas ended up collapsing to the ground from the strain, which caused the Radicals accompanying him to mock him for his apparent weakness. He proves them all wrong as he ends up surviving the strain and killing them all with his power.
  • Kill It with Fire: Given his mastery over fire magic, Lucas is prone to incinerating anyone who crosses him alive.
  • Magic Missile Storm: As a conjurer, Lucas specializes in hitting his enemies with hails of fiery projectiles.
  • More Hateable Minor Villain: Despite having no connection all to the Vritra other than being an unwitting puppet as one of the Radicals and being killed off in Volume 4, Lucas is one of the most despicable antagonists in the story despite how minor his role is. He got away for actions in the Dire Tombs leading to a near-Total Party Kill, tormented Arthur during their time in Xyrus Academy, and during the attack on Xyrus Academy killed off many students and faculty on top of threatening to desecrate the incapacitated Tessia's body to Arthur's face. No wonder Arthur decided to end Lucas's life in a graphic fashion, as he had gotten tired of Lucas eluding justice for his actions for so long.
  • Never My Fault: There is not a single moment where Lucas ever acknowledges his own culpability in his faults, especially the ones that lead to the most damning consequences.
  • Playing with Fire: Despite his elf lineage being indisposed towards such an affinity, Lucas is highly adept at fire magic.
  • Power High: Shortly before the attack on Xyrus Academy starts, Lucas consumes an enhanced version of the elixirs the Radicals have been distributing across campus. Although it nearly kills him at first, he ends up becoming so consumed by its power that he no longer fears anyone, even his older brother Bairon.
  • Ring of Fire: Inferno's Cage, in which he creates a dome of fire to entrap his opponents.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He uses his family's influence and power to influence the hearing over his actions in the Dire Tombs. He ends up walking off with little more than a slap on the wrist in that his adventurer's license gets revoked, which is disproportionate considering his actions led to a near-Total Party Kill. Later on Averted to an extent when Goodsky reveals to Arthur that she turned down his family's attempts to get him a spot on the Disciplinary Committee because she was saving a spot for Arthur.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He and his older brother Bairon end up having this dynamic in the long run. While both are prodigious mages in their own right, partially thanks to their family's resources and elixirs, Bairon became strong in his own right while Lucas kept hiding behind their family's influence. Eventually, while Lucas ended up dying a mass murdering terrorist, Bairon had a Heel Realization after the loss of the war and getting betrayed by his collaborationist family and would go on to become the White Sheep.
  • Smug Snake: Has very little respect for anyone and likes to flaunt his power whenever given the chance (even if said power was not obtained naturally for the most part).
  • The Unfavorite: His father cares so little for him outside of his power that after he dies, the only thing said father worries about is how he can limit the damage Lucas’ betrayal could bring to the Wykes house’s image.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Lucas has blonde hair yet is an arrogant and power-hungry individual who is willing to cross any line to achieve his goals.
