The leader of Cluster #6 and the one responsible to getting the Eremillians through Opus to Braymire.


  • Big Good: As the leader of Cluster #6, they serve as this by default.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Wears only a tunic and undershirt with no pants.
  • The Leader: They are this for Evacuation cluster #6 and is responsible for getting each of the characters to regroup at the Mushroom tree.
  • Nice Guy: Approachable and friendly to all who know them.
  • Taking the Bullet: Is severely wounded by a sniper bullet that was aimed at Oakley

Species: Northern White Faced Owl

One of the Eremillian Elders who is accompanying Cluster #6 on their journey through Opus.


  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: His only item of clothing is a neckerchief with the symbol of Eremile on it.
  • The Big Guy: Of the Cluster #6 leaders, being the largest and most physically intimidating.
  • Cool Old Guy: Hermes certainly thinks so at first, but he become anxious at Oakley's sour attitude dissuades him. Despite this, Hermes hopes that the old owl will be able to teach him how to fly.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His best friend died right in front of him during his youth and was selfishly abandoned by his other friends leaving him with severe trust issues.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is unashamed to give out sarcastic quips if given the opportunity.
  • Disney Death: In both tellings of the finale he is severely wounded by the Big Bad and believed dead. Turns out he was Not Quite Dead and ultimately survives.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Is the oldest of the main characters, has a perpetually sour attitude and is dismissive of any tomfoolery of the other characters.
  • Heroic B So D: In Hermes & Shoelace's story he suffers PTSD in the middle of a busy road due to trauma from seeing his best friend dying in a similar event years ago.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his aggressiveness, he is fiercely loyal to Eredaxter and does what he can to help the rest of Cluster 6 when he can.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares the same name as a minor NPC who has made sporadic cameos in a few comics.
  • Your Size May Vary: Officially he is only slightly bigger than Eredaxter, yet most depictions of him tend to have him tower over the rest of the cast to emphasise his role as The Big Guy of the group.

A young bunny who becomes separated from her burrow once the flood hits Eremile. She befriends a feral spider whom she names Ryan.


  • Children Are Innocent: BunBun ponders over where her family are, but never considers the idea that they are dead. It's possible that this is a coping mechanism for her.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Spider: Ryan, the spider companion of Bunbun is this.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Ryan the Spider is a girl.
  • Interspecies Friendship: A bunny and a spider make an unusual pairing.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: BunBun is this.
  • Out of Focus: Due to being eliminated early and having very little interaction with the other competitors, she plays very little part in the greater Safe by Sunset canon.
  • Sole Survivor: Her burrow is flooded at the start of her story, she is quickly separated from her brother after this revelation leaving it entirely possible that she is the only person from her family who is still alive.

    Dutchess

Overall Position: Round 2 Elimination

A pet frog who was cruelly abandoned by her owner and left to die in the river Salmouth. She joins cluster #6 pretending to have always been in Eremile.


  • Ho Yay: Becomes best friends with Hissy very quickly and often becomes flustered whenever the implication that their relationship goes beyond that.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Only first sets foot in Eremile at the very start of her story, yet acts like she knows all about their customs in an attempt to fit in.
  • The Prima Donna: Starts off Egotistical and rude, having modelled herself on her perception of human through television.

    Eri

A Treasure hunting hermit living on the outskirts of Eremile.


  • Acrofatic: Is short and portly yet still manages to be very athletic despite her stature.
  • All That Glitters: Is obsessed with collecting 'shinies', regardless of how valuable they really are. The ring she wears as a headband for example is actually made of plastic.
  • Badass in Distress: Spends the latter half of her second chapter trapped in a mouse trap at the mercy of the Opus rats.
  • The Berserker: In Hazel's story she single-handedly fights off an entire swarm of rats while Hazel makes her escape.
  • Dreadful Musician: Her attempt at singing causes her friends to recoil in horror.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Is prone to bouts of aggression when pushed too far.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Wears only an open green jacket without any pants.
  • Heroic BSoD: Once she realises that Hazel was never hostile towards her in the past and her own paranoia was what caused her to grow up alone, she freaks out.
  • Improvised Weapon: Eri wields a makeshift spear. It appears to be made of a large animal tooth on a stick held together with several blades of grass.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Some of her negative perceptions towards Eremile turn out to be unfounded and based on her own paranoia.

A resident of Eremile who is fascinated by the human world.


  • Big Damn Heroes: In Eri's story she saves the titular vole from the enemy rats in situations where she most certainly would have perished without Hazel's intervention.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Becomes this with Eri.
  • Hidden Depths: Is surprisingly good at singing.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Briefly panics once the reality of killing Dick and Larry sets in.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Was raised by her grandmother after her parents died when she was a baby.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her bag contains her last remenants of her old life, she lashes out at Soot when he loses it and at Eri when she looks through her bag.

A formerly feral snake who gained sapience after eating a magical frog.


  • Arch-Enemy: Considers Shoelace a 'fake snek' and goes into angry tirades when the two meet. Shoelace, for her part merely considers Hissy a nuisance.
  • Berserk Button: Gets easily angered by 'fake sneks'. And has a particular distate for Shoelace because of this rage.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Due to her only forming a consciousness recently, she can only think in simple thoughts
  • The Ditz: With the mentality of a child, she spends a lot of time in her story learning new things about the world that are common to the rest of the cast.
  • The Dreaded: Natter is terrified of her, the fear is exclusive to him however, other characters react to her in either unease or confusion.
  • My Instincts Are Showing: Severely bites Mac in the shoulder while pulling him out of a trash compactor and briefly awakens her dormant feral state. Mac's screams to stop quickly snap Hissy out of this state thankfully.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: While not without her dramatic moments, Hissy has a silly demeanor and her confusion over understanding the unfamiliar world around her provides a lot of comedic beats through the stories.
  • Third-Person Person: Hissy talks like this.
  • Uplifted Animal: Hissy starts her story as a regular, feral snake. But after consuming a magical frog, she becomes sapient and gradually becomes more intelligent.

A young bat forcibly separated from his family when the flood hit. He travels with Cluster #6 and hopes to eventually reunite with his parents and siblings.


  • Big Brother Instinct: Very protective of his younger sister, Almond.
  • Break the Cutie: In Hissy's story he is terribly shaken after being bitten by Hissy when she pulls him out of a trash compactor.
  • The Quiet One: Due to being sheltered with his family for a long time, he has trouble expressing himself.

A mother & son duo forced to abandon their home when the floods hit. Soot doesn't take it well.


  • Bratty Half-Pint: Soot does very little to endear himself to the other characters, Maria often scolds him for this.
  • Framing Device: Their story is framed as a father reading his child a bedtime story.
  • Happily Adopted: Soot is not Maria's biological child, he was adopted by her several years before the start of the story.
  • Mama Bear: Maria is willing to protect Soot regardless of his attitude.
  • Precision F-Strike: Soot delivers possible the only F-Bomb in the entire Tournament.

    Natter

Format: Literature/Music
Overall Position: Round 2 Elimination

A Bombastic Toad living in Eremile. He has a rivalry with Oakley.


  • Butt-Monkey: Suffers a lot of injuries over the course of his adventures.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Often laments his unfortunate tendencies in a sarcastic tone.
  • Dirty Coward: Described as a coward through-and-through. He does not skip an opportunity to run from danger
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: His rudeness and egotism does not endear him to many of the other characters, Teasel in particular sees him as a bad influence on Walkies. He latches on to Hermes & Shoelace as friends because of this since they are outsiders.
  • Getting High on Their Own Supply: Is not above ingesting his own sweat to get high. Teasel is naturally distrustful of him over this.
  • Intoxication Ensues: His sweat is a powerful hallucinogen.
  • Toad Licking: He's the toad in question. He isn't fond of the practice though, since he needs to be in the maw of a predator for this natural defense to be effective.

Species: Field Vole & Teacup Yorkshire Terrier
Format: Literature
Overall Position: Semi-finalist

A motherly vole and her adopted puppy child. They are hesitant about leaving Eremile.


  • Dark and Troubled Past: Teasel lost her mate and only litter of children many years ago, and Walkies' siblings died when their mother went looking for food and never returned.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Walkies is one of the largest characters in the story and his clumsiness from his young age has him bumping into a lot of things and people.
  • Happily Adopted: Teasel adopted Walkies as her her own child when she discovered the abandoned puppy and they have lived with each other ever since.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Walkies is one of the biggest characters in the tournament in contrast to his mother, who is among the smallest.
  • Interspecies Adoption: A vole who adopted a lost puppy.
  • Missing Mom: Walkies' biological mother disappeared when scavenging for food and never returned.
  • Put on a Bus: Walkies and Teasel remain in Opus to receive medical treatment for Teasel's wounds at a vet and likewise remain absent from the events of the finale.

Species: Honduran white bat

A Mysterious white bat whose role in the story is determined by each writer.


  • Ambiguously Evil: In Hazel's story, she is a resident of Opus who observes the ambush on Cluster #6, but her true agenda is unclear as of this writing.
  • Depending on the Writer: Enforced. Cielle has no predefined personality to speak of, allowing different writers to choose her purpose in the story.
  • Flat Character: Intentionally so. Each writer may choose her personality and role in the story to whatever they see fit this way.
  • Schrödinger's Canon: Her role in each story is different depending on each writer. What sticks and what doesn't depends on how the tournament progresses.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Loves figs. She even offers to help train Hermes to fly if he can provide her with one.

    Eep 

The Great Wizard Eep Kei

Species: Mexican Alligator Lizard

A mysterious Lizard who sends Hermes & Shoelace on their journey to become adventurers.


  • The Cameo: Appears sporadically after his first appearance;
    • Appears floating on a log during Hermes & Shoelaces journey to the Mushroom tree.
    • Appears swinging on a vine in Eri's story.
    • Graffiti saying 'Eep was here' is found in the Opus sewers. What he was doing deep down there is anyone's guess.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: As a self described 'Great Wizard', Eep isn't clearly all there in the head. His appearance in Hermes & Shoelaces story has him give the duo a 'blade' which is just a stick.
  • Cool Old Guy: Hermes & Shoelace certainly think so and hold him in high regard despite his eccentricities.
  • Smoke Out: Parodied, Eep tosses some dirt at his feet to make a dramatic exit after talking to Hermes and Shoelace. The resulting dust cloud is tiny and does not obscure Eep's escape in any way.
  • Third-Person Person: Eep talks like this.

    Elise

Antagonists

    Opus 

The Human City of Opus

That's right, an entire city. Opus as a location serves as a hub for various assorted nasties and hazards that Cluster #6 must overcome.


  • Cats Are Mean: The cats of Opus are a common adversary to the characters, with cat enemies being antagonists in Hissy, Natter and Teasel & Walkies' stories.
  • Depending on the Writer: How technologically advanced Opus is as a location is determined by each writer.
  • The Dreaded: The Humans of Opus, although none have yet to properly feature in the story, being featured in backstories or offscreen events. The closest one has had to affecting the plot comes from the sniper who ambushes Cluster #6 in Hazel's story, and even then they are framed in shadow.
  • Scavenger World: What some stories present Opus as like. Any critters that live in Opus have to make due with what they can scavenge just to get by.
  • Wretched Hive: The one consistent trait of Opus is that it is a horrible place to live for animalkind, filled with sadistic predators and apathetic humans.
  • You Dirty Rat!: Rats are a common adversary in many of the chapters set within Opus, with different factions being the antagonists of Hazel, Eri & Natter's stories.

The local Sheriff of the critters of Opus who doesn't take kindly to strangers in his city.


  • Arc Villain: Of Shoelace & Hermes' story and the Finale as a whole.
  • Cats Are Mean: An antagonistic cat who seeks to disrupt cluster #6's journey to Braymire for their interference in the happenings of Opus.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Serves as this to Mistress Olive. Although she's the one calling the shots, he's the one who holds command over the Opus critters. When he is defeated by Shoelace, Olive is unable to control his men who reject her authority.
  • Final Boss: Remains the final and biggest threat to the cluster in both iterations of the finale.
  • Intoxication Ensues: Is defeated by Shoelace when she tricks him into ingesting some of Natter's hallucinogenic sweat.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Gets Hissy as an arena fighter and exploits her rivalry with Shoelace to force them to fight under threat of harming Soot.
  • Shout-Out: His name is an obvious one to Clint Eastwood, befitting his Western character archetype.
  • Southern Drawl: Speaks in an exaggerated southern accent befitting his cowboy motif.

    Father Gideon

Species: Rat

The leader of Rusevine village, hidden within the sewers of Opus.


  • Arc Villain: Of Hazel's second chapter.
  • Ax-Crazy: His true nature as revealed when Hazel and Eri successfully escape Rusevine. Best exemplified with this quote before he punishes two of his lackeys:
Gideon: Close this door behind you, lock it, and do not open it again until blood spills under the threshold.
  • Bad Boss: Brutally kills two of his subordinates after Eri and Hazel get away.
  • Eye Scream: Has a cluster of tumors where his eyes should be.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Introduces himself to Eri and Hazel with a veneer of insincere kindness, it's all a front to eventually kill and eat the duo and he becomes violently unhinged when the two escape from him.
  • Large and in Charge: Is the biggest rat seen in the tournament thus far, he towers over all of his subordinates and the already tall Hazel.
  • Sinister Minister: Styles himself with the title of Father and wears a sash draped over his shoulders as a symbol of his authority.
  • You Dirty Rat!: An antagonistic rat located in the sewers of Opus.
  • You Have Failed Me: Brutally kills two of his lackeys for letting Hazel steal from his treasury.
Gideon: You disheveled wretches never realise that your sins are eventually paid for... ...in BLOOD.

    Mistress Olive *SPOILERS* 

Olive

Species: Fox

A former inhabitant of Eremile who left to become a crime boss in Opus.


  • Arc Villain: Forms a Big Bad Duumvirate with the Sheriff in Hermes & Shoelace's final round.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Despite technically being the boss to the Sheriff, she does not hold the same level of authority over his goons which severely hinders her threat after Clint is defeated.
  • Evil Former Friend: Was a former friend to Oakley who abandoned him to his death years ago. The other friend she entered Opus with was also eventually abandoned by her.
  • Jerkass: Is pointlessly cruel to just about everyone she encounters.
  • Post-Final Boss: Becomes this after the Sheriff is defeated and the critters of Braymire arrive to backup the cluster, which leaves her influence and power severely crippled but remaining a significant threat.

    Plague Doctor

A mysterious masked figure prowling a dilapidated district of Opus


    Rockoons 

The Rockoon Gang

Species: Raccoons

A punk gang situated at the "Trash Mammal" bar in Opus.


  • Affably Evil: Genuinely friendly towards Hermes, Shoelace and Natter, and only turn on the trio when Natter attempts to back out of their leadership role.
  • Arc Villain: Of Hermes & Shoelace's second chapter.
  • Intoxication Ensues: One of them catches Natter in his mouth, he quickly begins hallucinating from Natter's toxic sweat.

    Tom, Dick & Larry

Species: Rats


  • Arc Villain: Of Eri's second chapter.
  • Body Horror: Dick has a human ear growing out of his back. Clutter from around their lair implies the trio are escaped lab rats.
  • The Brute: Larry, who has no dialogue and is the largest of the three brothers.
  • A Dick in Name: Dick.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Dick wears one and is the leader of the trio. Despite this, he's the first to die.
  • Fat Bastard: All three of them are quite portly and thoroughly unpleasant.
  • Groin Attack: Tom is on the receiving end of this during his first struggle with Hazel.
  • Hate Sink: Tom and Dick quickly prove themselves to be utterly detestable as soon as they appear by taunting or threatening to eat Eri.
  • Mad Scientist: Dick fancies himself as one of these and wants to use Eri as a guinea pig for his mysterious serum.
  • You Dirty Rat!: A trio of rats who desire to experiment on and/or eat Eri.
