     Early Poptropica Island

The Settlers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/13f18d12_7a5c_45f2_96a0_54ee855fe22e.jpeg

A colony of Poptropica's first settlers, who have several vital possessions stolen (a pig, water bucket, and flag). The island quest is to get the items back to them.

  • Non-Standard Character Design: Their designs are much more pixelated than the average Poptropican, and each of them have a clearly defined black outline.
  • One-Gender Race: Not as bad as other examples, since only about six are shown, but the ones who are seen are all male.

Giant

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b0fc7e0b_4a01_457d_a429_847cba224d1d.png

A giant who lives in the clouds in the sky, who has his club set down to prevent you from passing through to find the water bucket. To make him lift his club, you have to find his missing golden egg in the sewers and bring it to him.

     Shark Tooth Island

Medicine Man

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f35da75a_a0ae_4c65_b699_2155e5d712bf.png

An islander who wears a dark blue mask and lives on a stand with a straw roof on top of a palm tree. He only helps you out if you are wearing the grass skirt that the salesman gives you, and instructs you to go to the temple to find the ingredients he needs to brew the potion that will tame the Great Booga Shark. Once you bring him the needed ingredients, he brews a potion in a coconut that you need to launch with the coconut cannon to feed to the Great Booga.

Professor Hammerhead

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4e290a16_1f9d_449a_bcaf_39dbc497ae94.png

A mysteriously vanished professor, who disappeared during his studies of the Great Booga Shark. He turns out to have been trapped on an island by the Booga along with a young boy. After you put the Great Booga Shark in a deep sleep with the potion, you are able to go to the island to lead the Professor and the boy back to mainland. As thanks, the Professor gives you the island's medallion.

Great Booga Shark

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/51dc7d74_1039_4f88_b566_69fa9111a1a2.png

The "villain," so to speak, that swims around the island and prevents the natives from going out into the sea. When you give it the potion in a coconut that the Medicine Man brewed, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean in a heavy sleep.

     Time Tangled Island

Future Player Character

The player character from fifty years into the future, who warns you about the bad future s/he comes from and gives you the time device needed to go back in the past to repair it.

  • Bad Future: Comes from one.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Averted. The player character's future self isn't seen as very irritating or freaky, and is more or less the same person (as much as you can get in-game, anyway), only with bags under his/her eyes, white hair, and a pack of sticks on his/her back when coming from the Bad Future (but with glasses at the end, when you meet with him/her again).
  • The Mentor: Plays this to his/her younger self.

Edmund Hillary

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e9256856_54a2_49c1_b4ab_840960d6b842.png

One of the first two people to climb Mt. Everest, who lost his climbing goggles. You can find his goggles on a warrior in the Aztec Empire.

Tenzing Norgay

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dff980a9_7eb6_4e61_951d_3cac45ec748a.png

The other of the first two people to climb Mt. Everest.

     24 Carrot Island

Dr. Hare

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dd4feb4e_5a08_4247_a640_c02ac607f773.png

The Big Bad of the island, as well as Poptropica's first proper villain. He is the reason behind the carrot shortage, having brainwashed many citizens into bunny drones that work for him and help make the stolen carrots into fuel for his robot spaceship (a "rabbot").

  • Alliterative Name: His full name, Harvey Hare.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • Going from his profile, it’s unknown who is the real “evil” side to Dr. Hare: his actual human self, the rabbit he shares his mind with, or both sides of his brain.
    • Because he and the other three villains speedily swam off before Super Villain Island’s final battle, it’s not known if Erewhon officials took them back in or they ran off for good, now redeemed people with the destruction of the totems.
  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits and hares, of course.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: His giant "rabbot" on 24 Carrot Island.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Dr. Hare may have the weirdest motifs, but he’s still a capable supervillain. He was able to kidnap and brainwash (via hypno-devices) people into working for him, cause 24 Carrot Island to collapse into economic depression and pollution by stealing all of its main crop, and almost successfully reached space to take over the world. He was able to set facilities throughout Poptropica before being defeated, and even after the events of 24 Carrot Island they’re still running.
  • BFG: Wields a carrot-powered ray gun in “Dr. Hare’s Revenge”.
  • Big Bad: Of 24 Carrot Island.
  • Brainwashed: Does this to tons of citizens to make them work for him, with the aid of bunny drone ears.
  • Breakout Character: Out of all the villains, Dr. Hare has made the most appearances in the game (inside and out, through advertising) ever since his debut in 2007.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He often boasts of being an “evil genius”.
  • Deep Sleep: Is asleep in a container, along with several other villains (Binary Bard, Captain Crawfish, and Black Widow) on Super Villain Island. He wakes up at the end and escapes, though.
  • Distressed Dude: Not in reality, but on Super Villain Island, his dream involves getting kidnapped by ants and taken underground.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": It isn't known if he has a first name. Subverted with the release of his villain biography, revealing his first name is “Harvey”. But despite this, all his appearances have him called “Dr. Hare”.
  • The Faceless: We have never seen Dr. Hare officially without his goggles or his rabbit suit on, all we know is his LEGO figure complexion and his comically large rabbit buck teeth.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Apparently despite being a self-proclaimed genius, he entrusts his brainwashed henchmen to pilot his rabbot for him and never considered someone (the player character) infiltrating using defunct rabbit drone ears and running the rabbot.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Wears a pair of green goggles, but they don't really seem to do anything.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He doesn’t appear in “Dr. Hare’s Secret Lab”, but he is the one who built it. Jeff Kinney states he has several labs built throughout Poptropica, main base being the Carrot King Factory in 24 Carrot.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: As a result of a freak experiment accident, his brain is half-human and half-rabbit.
  • Harmless Villain: Outside of the islands where he’s the actual main antagonist (24 Carrot and its Worlds remake, Dr. Hare’s Secret Lab, Dr. Hare’s Revenge), he’s not that much of a threat.
    • In Super Villain Island, the player character comments he looks more cute than creepy when he’s asleep. His odd dream provides comic relief for an otherwise Darker and Edgier setting, compared to the other villains’ dreams it’s more cartoonish and silly.
    • Alongside Betty Jetty, the Black Widow, and Director D, he appears in RealityTV Island as a possible contestant, but they all play by the rules and don’t attempt any sabotage.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Quotes this trope in “Dr. Hare’s Revenge” when the player character points out that he has no more carrots to power his ray gun, because all of his carrots were littered throughout the spaceship carrot, and the player had picked them all up.
  • Mad Scientist: The first example of this villain archetype in the game.
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: His dream in Super Villain Island. Dr. Hare gets kidnapped by ants, into their underground lair, and you have to rescue him by digging down there Terraria-style. It’s implied, apparently, ALL THIS connects to his evil motivations becausethis is the dream where his totem is found.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • A tabloid found in RealityTV Island says that after Dr. Hare was taken out of space, he starred in his own cooking show. What happened during and after that was never fully explained, but at the very least there’s reasoning to him participating in the island’s eponymous Reality Show.
    • Apparently he has had the “kidnapped by ants” dream multiple times before the player character invaded it. And for some unexplained reason, he hates having it.
Dr. Hare: Nooo! Not this dream again!
  • One-Way Visor: We’ve never seen his eyes since his goggles’ lens are extremely opaque, and he never takes them off. In a quiz option, it’s shown that he has the same cartoony eyes as everyone else.
  • Palette Swap: A handful of exclusive costumes recolor his pink/green rabbit costume.
    • Night Hare: A light blue/pink variant.
    • Shadow Hare: A black/red variant, released alongside Light Hare.
    • Light Hare: A white/blue variant, released alongside Shadow Hare.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: When he’s not attempting world domination, he’s hula-hooping, wearing fuzzy pink slippers, and getting kidnapped by ants in his dreams.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Literally. He wears a pale pink bunny suit.
  • Series Mascot: He replaces Shark Boy as one of Poptropica’s mascots, to the point he often teeters on being a Villain Protagonist in some of his appearances.
  • Shout-Out: His first name (Harvey) comes from the rabbit pooka from the play-turned-film of the same name.
  • Spin-Off Babies: The Baby Dr. Hare Follower (based on The Child) is, of course, a baby!Dr. Hare that follows the player character around when equipped.
  • Starter Villain: The first real villain island-wise.
  • Villain Protagonist: Becomes a playable character alongside his beaver-themed counterpart Dr. Beev in the limited event mini-game “Hoptropica”.
  • Wolverine Publicity: Despite the title, he doesn’t appear in the “Dr. Hare’s Secret Lab” miniquest.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He’s willing to hypnotize both adults and children into working for him. In “Dr. Hare’s Revenge”, he hatches an elaborate vengeance plot against the player character (however this is only applicable if the player is a Kid Hero).
  • You Fool!: Says this from the rabbot spaceship to you when you, while on the controls, crash it into an asteroid.
Dr. Hare: You Fool! Watch where you're going!

    Super Power Island

Ned Noodlehead

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a609ae68_982a_4d5f_b057_1e9b7576f0e0.png

The owner of the local comic book shop, who gives you a guide on becoming a superhero. At the end of the quest, he barges in at the last minute and punches out Betty Jetty for you. Because of this, he's the one who's given the island medallion instead of you, though he gives it to you anyway in exchange for a hot dog.

  • Alliterative Name: Ned Noodlehead.
  • Ascended Fanboy: He becomes a superhero at the last minute to help you take out Betty Jetty.
  • Big Damn Heroes: At the end, he comes out of nowhere to help you beat Betty Jetty.
  • Chekhov's Gunman
  • Easy Come, Easy Go: He gets the medallion that you usually get after finishing an island's quest, but he will trade it to you for a hot dog.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Due to being the one seen punching out Betty Jetty, he receives all the credit. It gets to the point that the player character is tagged on to the Warden's congratulation as an afterthought.
  • Geek: For comic books.
  • Nerd Glasses: He has the chunky black type of glasses, complete with tape on the bridge.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Delivers the final punch to Betty Jetty to defeat her.

  • Mind over Matter: He can move things ranging from bits of rock to whole chunks out of the ground.
  • Non-Action Guy: Unlike Speeding Spike, he doesn't come into direct combat with the player character, preferring instead to hit him/her with rocks and chunks out of the ground.
  • Punny Name: His name is an obvious play on the word "cerebral," which itself is an allusion to his powers.

Crusher

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9eb5c76e_307c_4a36_ab10_2afa69e49b22.png

Betty Jetty

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7d41a776_eed0_4da3_aeac_8205877a1f9b.png

One of the six escaped villains on Super Power Island. She has the power of Flight and can throw green energy balls, and is the Final Boss of the island.

  • Dark Action Girl
  • Energy Ball: She's able to create and hurl green energy balls at the player character during the climactic chase in the sky.
  • Evil Laugh: At the end of the sky chase scene:
Betty Jetty: It's going to take more than that to stop me! Bwaah ha ha!!!
Betty Jetty: -continues laughing until Ned Noodlehead runs in and punches her out-
  • Final Boss
  • Flight: The only villain on the island who can fly.
  • Harmless Villain: She comes back as a contestant on "RealityTV Island", but she follows and respects the game's rules like everyone else.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Her secondary ability to create and hurl green energy balls, unlike her flight powers and the island's other villains' own, has no connection to her crimes.

    Spy Island

Director D

The director of the secret agent organization, who entrusts you with the mission to rescue the three missing secret agents and stop B.A.D., a notorious criminal association that uses lasers and a satellite to zap off the hair of Poptropicans all over the island. It turns out that his "hair" is actually a toupee, and he's the mastermind behind B.A.D. Once defeated, he is imprisoned in a cage in the agency building.

  • Bald of Evil: His "hair" is really a toupee to cover up that he's bald, like all the other members of B.A.D.
  • Big Bad: Turns out to be this.
  • Big Good: Seems to be this, being the director of the secret agents and the one to give you your mission. Subverted when it's revealed he's the one behind B.A.D. all along.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Seeing as he's the leader of a villainous organization actually called B.A.D. and all.
  • Double Agent
  • Evil All Along
  • Neat Freak: The Pop Personality Quiz shows that he prefers cleanliness.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Wears a nice white suit.
  • Harmless Villain: He returns as a RealityTV Island contestant, but doesn't do anything deceitful for his own gain and plays the game honoring the rules.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's near impossible to discuss him without spoiling the fact that he's actually the Big Bad of the island.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In the climax of the island, he does his best to take out the player character, regardless of their gender.

The Three Secret Agents

The three top agents of the organization, who have gone missing and are in need of rescue. Once you save each of them, they give you things that come into great use during the quest.

  • Damsel in Distress: The female agent gets held captive in a cage in a greenhouse.
  • Distressed Dudes: The two male agents, one being tied up in a room at the docks and the other being tied up in an attic.
  • Faux Action Girl/Faux Action Guys: All three of them. Though they're stated in the island's description (when it was still in development) to be the best agents, all they do are get held hostage and, upon being rescued, give you important objects (the laser pen, grappling bow-tie, ultra-vision goggles, and satellite clue cards altogether) before running away.

    Nabooti Island

A rogue archeologist and a minor antagonist.
