"On our way here, when we said that ['I'm going to be the one to find the One Piece'], it always made people laugh at us. But each and every time, I killed all those who laughed! Still, in the oceans ahead, those who don't have the guts to say it will die first! Let's meet again in the New World!"
Chapter 505

Born in the South Blue, Eustass Kid is the captain of the Kid Pirates and one of the eleven pirates dubbed with the moniker "Supernova". He's the only one who had a bounty higher than Luffy's. He's known for his violent personality, though he's also knowledgeable in the ways of how the world works and when to step back. Like Luffy, he aims to become Pirate King, and is infamous for leaving behind a trail of bodies of those who mocked him for it. He says that he possesses the determination to achieve the impossible, which is necessary if one is to succeed in the New World. His Magnet-Magnet Fruit (Jiki Jiki no Mi) grants him power over magnetism.

After the time skip, he was first shown watching the black market, with a new metallic arm. Some time later, he strikes an alliance with Apoo and Hawkins to strike down Shanks. Unfortunately, before he could even get anywhere on that, they're attacked by Kaido and resoundingly trashed, leaving him a half dead prisoner of Kaido.

He makes his big return in the Wano Arc, reuniting with Luffy when the latter ends up in prison. From the start, it's clear however that their team-up will not be a smooth one.

His bounty is 3,000,000,000 berries.note

    A - K
  • Aesop Amnesia: Despite his successes in Wano coming after allying with Luffy in Udon, and managing to defeat Big Mom alongside Law, Kid stubbornly refuses to befriend anyone else even if his crew becomes friendly with the alliance, even telling his crew not to befriend anyone, citing they are enemies and noting that the alliance was only temporary, and even ends up attacking Luffy once he is declared Emperor over Kid despite cheering from him during his final bout with Kaido. This ends up becoming a big mistake, as he challenges Shanks in a rematch at Elbaf thinking he's ready to take him on solo. He isn't, and Shanks wipes him out with ease and sinks his crew to the bottom of the ocean with no one to save Kid because he has no allies around him to help this time.
  • All for Nothing: His progress in Wano, gaining a powerful alliance, defeating Big Mom and helping in Kaido's defeat as well as getting three of the four Road Poneglyphs become naught in Chapter 1079, when Shanks elects to destroy the Kid Pirates after seeing how bloodthirsty and cruel Kid generally is, with his "allies" nowhere to save him this time as well as the Red Hair Pirates seizing their Road Poneglyphs and sinking their ship anyways.
  • Aloof Ally: While Kid does take part in the Onigashima Island raid, he makes it clear to the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance that he's there to do his own thing. When the war begins, Kid fights separated from the Straw Hats, except for the fight against Kaido and Linlin on the roof, where he's alongside Luffy, Zoro and Law. The aloof part does gradually decrease over the course of the battle thanks to the latter three going out of their way to act as genuine allies with Killer and Kid despite Kid's words, and Kid later has minimal issue tag-teaming Big Mom with Law after leaving Kaido to Luffy.
  • Always Someone Better: When it comes to the rivalry between Kid and Luffy, two of the most prominent Supernovas of the Worst Generation, Kid often appears to fall behind by a step or two.
    • Eustass Kid expresses frustration over how Luffy takes a giant step ahead of all the other Supernovas by being the only one brave enough to enter the Paramount War, raising his reputation worldwide.
    • Zig Zagged at first before being played straight. It's worth noting that Law and Kid defeat Big Mom, making them the first members of their generation to beat an Emperor. However, they achieve this feat in a two-on-one fight, unlike Luffy's one-on-one battle with Kaido. Law and Kid emerge victorious by knocking Big Mom off the Floating Continent they are fighting on, whereas Luffy attempts to beat Kaido unconscious. Nonetheless, Luffy manages to defeat Kaido in one-on-one combat. Although Luffy, Kid, and Law share a substantial 3,000,000,000 Berri bounty for leading a successful raid on Onigashima, Luffy is the only one officially recognized by the World Government as one of the Four Emperors. This is due to the enormous danger he poses to them, particularly as the second coming of Joyboy, compared to Kid and Law. It's further proven true that during his second attempt at a solo fight with Shanks ends up in the destruction of his crew and him getting knocked out of the race.
  • Always Second Best: After being introduced with a higher bounty than Luffy, Kid's strength and reputation are considerably overshadowed following Luffy's participation in the Summit War at Marineford. Meanwhile, Luffy emerges as a powerful force in the New World Post-Time Skip, defeating formidable opponents such as Doflamingo, Cracker, Katakuri, and Emperor Kaido. This success has earned him the coveted title of Emperor of the Sea. Although Kid's bounty was slightly higher than Luffy's during the latter's two-year disappearance, he has not been as successful in his attempts to defeat the Emperors. His victories were minor, and he suffered embarrassing losses and loses his left arm against the Red Hair Pirates. This disparity is because Luffy adapts to his opponents, learns from his mistakes, and evolves as a fighter, while Kid continues to repeat his errors. This is evident in his ill-fated battle against Shanks, where he underestimates his opponent and suffers a brutal defeat, ending his aspirations of becoming the Pirate King.
  • Animal Motifs: According to the SBS, Kid's animal motif is bulls, which befit his quick temper and tendency to violently attack those who slight him or set him off. It also fits his preference for close-range physical attacks with his metal appendages. One of his attacks, Punk Corna Dio, has Kid assembling a colossal bull out of scrap and weapons which charges the enemy. In the Wano arc, he uses it to slam a powered-up Big Mom into the ground.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Kid lost an arm at some point during the timeskip and replaced it with an artificial one. It was at the hand of Benn Beckman.
  • Artificial Limbs: After the Time Skip, Kid has gained a new metal left arm. He lost the original limb to Benn Beckman.
  • At Least I Admit It: He's far from being a nice guy with his destructive and murderous tendencies, but he considers himself (and pirates in general) better than the Celestial Dragons because he at least admits that he's doing wrong while they treat their wrongdoings as justified because of their ancestry.
Kid: Celestial Dragons... Slaves... Human shops... Compared to the mighty and their simple "pure hearts", the world's villains are much more humane. Scum rule the world and give birth to more scum. Don't they know that? We may mean to do harm, but we're sorta cute by comparison, aren't we, Killer? (Chapter 500)
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Kid's strongest attack Damned Punk is an electromagnetic railgun strong enough to turn fleets into Swiss cheese and make Big Mom cough up blood. It's also a giant cannon three times his size attached to his arm that's as cumbersome to wield as it sounds, leaves Kid a sitting duck because it takes forever to charge, and if something damages it mid-charge, all that energy explodes in Kid's face. The first time he uses it, he has Law covering him. The second time, he's not so lucky.
  • Awesomeness Is a Force: According to Kaido in Chapter 924, Kid possesses Conqueror's Haki, making him the second known Supernova (after Luffy) to have it. However, the extent of his proficiency with it remains unknown since he never uses it in the manga canon.
  • Ax-Crazy: While Luffy gets his high bounty by being a huge thorn in the World Government's side, Kid got his by killing anyone and everyone who mocked his dream of being Pirate King. His penchant for violence, incredibly short temper, extreme cruelty and brutality towards anyone who has attracted his wrath, and murderous disdain for cowardice and weakness are all defining character traits of his. He proves his chops with this as he decides to attack Shanks's crew for no other reason than to get him to fight.
  • Bait the Dog: At first, Kid doesn't display his cruelty and penchant for wanton murder on-screen, with the worst that he does being snarking at Luffy and Law during their Enemy Mine at Sabaody and showing general disgust at the decadent World Nobles for their slavery and hypocrisy. When he crucifies a group of pirates fleeing the New World, however, it shows that he's just as villainous as the rumors describe him to be.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: During the Egghead Arc, Kid and his crew arrive in Elbaf where Shanks and his fleet are. Kid thinks he's ready to fight Shanks in a rematch and readies himself. When Shanks doesn't take him seriously (at first), Kid becomes angry at his lack of respect for him and charges his Damned Punk to sink Shanks' fleet to goad him into fighting him. He gets what he wanted, as Shanks foresees the damage Kid's attack was going to do and takes Kid out in one hit, takes his Poneglyph rubbings and has his crew sink to the bottom of the ocean.
  • Benevolent Boss: In spite of being an incredibly violent and ruthless individual, Kid genuinely cares for the well-being his own crew and trusts them above anyone else, enough to where his first priority after escaping from Udon prison is to find his crewmates. Thanks to Kid caring about their well-being, his crew have great respect for him and are loyal enough to be willing to help him fight Big Mom and Kaido, two Emperors of the sea, despite the prospect of defeating either being slim. They even try to surrender all their Road Poneglyphs to Shanks if it meant sparing Kid from further harm at the hands of the Red Hair Pirates.
  • BFG: Kid's self-described "ultimate attack" is a massive electromagnetic cannon assembled from scrap, which he dubs Damned Punk. It's powerful enough to be his attempt at finishing Big Mom off for good by blasting her straight through Onigashima (an island floating in the sky) and down into the Flower Capital's outskirts. It's also powerful enough to shatter several of Shanks's ships as well as bifurcate his people in half, as Shanks's Advanced Observation Haki shows.
  • Big Eater: He is capable of eating as many kibidango as Luffy to the point of becoming round.
  • Blood Knight: Kid is one of the most aggressive characters in the series. He's already challenged three of the Four Emperors. However, he's far from able to stand on equal ground with them and, when he faces Kaido, he's easily beaten into a bloody pulp. Doesn't deter him, though. On the contrary, Kid bounces right back and faces both Kaido and Big Mom at Onigashima alongside Luffy and Law. Deconstructed, as during their revenge match, Shanks might have given him a chance to fight him hadn't he decided to fire on his weaker crewmembers just to rile him up, which backfires on him and gets him instantly routed without him getting a desired fight.
  • Bootstrapped Leitmotif: The track "Supernova — Super Rookies' Entrance" was originally a leitmotif for the Worst Generation as a whole in Film: Stampede, but the anime has more or less made it Kid's exclusive theme due to all the times it plays when he specifically does something.
  • Boring, but Practical: In the One Piece world, everyone uses his/her Devil Fruit power creatively. Kid, instead, always uses his magnetism power to create a giant arm composed of metallic objects to squash his opponents. It's effective enough to be comparable to the effectiveness of Law and Luffy with Gear Third's powers during the Sabaody Arc. Averted when he goes all-out against Big Mom and uses his awakened devil fruit ability in creative ways, such as magnetizing Linlin to squash her with giant metallic objects.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: When Kid meets Hawkins again on Onigashima after the encounter with Kaido, Kid is understandably angry at him for siding with Kaido so easily rather than help him despite Kid being honest with him at the time for an alliance. Hawkins however also makes a good point to remind Kid that Apoo set them both up with Kaido, that he didn't want to betray Kid but given the situation felt he had no choice other than to do so in order to survive.
  • Break the Haughty: Eustass Kid is the most vicious Supernova, being widely known for causing countless innocent casualties, and has a long list of crimes that put even the worst pirates to the shame. However, during his time in the New World, he suffers a lot of humiliation and misfortune, including losing his left arm in a fight against the Red Hair Pirates, getting kicked out of Big Mom's territory without ever encountering Big Mom herself (albeit not without getting a rubbing of her Poneglyph), being set up by Apoo for a beatdown by Kaido (who captures him and makes him his prisoner) while his other prospective ally Hawkins is too cowardly to help him, suffering grueling torture for weeks on end along with his crew and his friend Killer being force-fed a faulty SMILE fruit. As an insult to his pride as a pirate, despite getting a massive bounty increase, Luffy is given all the credit for the ordeal against the Kaido-Big Mom alliance and labeled as one of the new Emperors of the Sea, while Kid is labeled as a mere accomplice. And it culminates in his defeat against Shanks and his crew being disbanded after challenging him in Egghead Arc.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Even with his powers gone from having Seastone shackles, Kid still has his amazing strength and speed on par with Luffy.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Kidd really threatens the lives of Shanks' men to try and bait him into a fight, then Shanks unleashes his full force and defeats Kidd with a single strike.
  • Can't Catch Up: Despite being a firm believer in Social Darwinism, Kid overlooks a crucial aspect that plays a key role in his failure to surpass Luffy - the ability to learn from one's mistakes. Kid's time in the New World highlights how outmatched he is compared to an actual Emperor. He suffers multiple defeats but never seems to learn from them other than Awakening his Devil Fruit powers, which proves to be his Fatal Flaw. On the other hand, Luffy, who shares Kid's ruthless and fearless nature, also demonstrates his adaptability in and out of battle, his ability to make friends and allies everywhere he goes, and his willingness to learn from and work with others. These qualities puts him ahead of Kid. Eustass' defeat at the hands of Shanks, the pirate Luffy seeks to emulate the most, only solidifies this point.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Kid openly aims to be the world's most ruthless, violent pirate and uses morally questionable methods to become Pirate King.
  • Childhood Friends: According to Oda, Kid and Killer have been friends since they were kids. Not surprisingly, the two are very close, to the point Killer is the only one Kid is nice to, and Kid is enraged when he learns that Orochi fed Killer a SMILE, and now Killer can't stop laughing.
  • Covered in Scars: Kid sports a few scars he didn't have before the timeskip. It's a good symbol of his violent lifestyle and the trials he's had to undergo in the New World.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Working together, Kid and Trafalgar Law manage to defeat Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors, on Onigashima after a grueling battle. The reaction of their crews is proud disbelief.
  • Defiant to the End: Kid may be an arrogant and overconfident pirate, but he clearly doesn't show cowardice in face of defeat.
    • Kid doesn't show a hint of hesitation when confronting Big Mom or Kaido. Even when the latter has seemingly killed Luffy, Kid pushes his exhausted body back to his feet and swears to a similarly defiant Law that he'll go down swinging.
    • When he's knocked out by Shanks, his expression isn't fear but mere surprise.
  • Determinator: It doesn't matter just what he does to him, there is nothing that Kaido can do to break his resolve and get him to work under his flag. Kid has spent a lot of time in prison but his resolve persisted. That same resolve pushes him back up time and again during his and Law's fight with Big Mom until the two finally take her down.
  • Disability Immunity: Kid no longer having a left arm actually helps him down the line. Hawkins had used one of his voodoo dolls to link his body with Kid's, thereby causing him a lot of trouble while he's fighting Big Mom. Then Killer comes up with a way to stop Hawkins: he chops off his left arm which holds said doll. And Kid's fine because he already lost his own left arm to the Red-Hair Pirates.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: He sunk two of Big Mom's ships. Not attacked, not damaged, sunk. Much later when they're face-to-face, Kid mocks Big Mom's attempt to steal his life force, and soon after that, defeats Big Mom alongside Law, removing her from the Four Emperors.
Kid: Why should we be afraid of the weak words of some old hag who's outlived her welcome?
  • Does Not Like Spam: He and Killer share a hatred of curry udon. According to Oda, this stemmed from a childhood incident where they got beaten up by their mutual crush, Shiruton Doruyanaika, for laughing at her when she accidentally spilled curry broth on herself.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: When Kid gets a massive bounty increase after the war on Onigashima, he's livid that Luffy is declared one of the new Four Emperors since he himself also defeated an Emperor (though he did need Law's help in doing so), so he nearly tries to kill Luffy to claim said position out of anger.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • Aside from him, Luffy, and Law taking down Marines at Sabaody (which is really just them showing off), after the Time Skip, he's willing to discuss an alliance with rivals Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins in order to take down an Emperor, said Emperor being Red-Haired Shanks!
    • The three of them ally together again in the Onigashima War to take down Kaido. Even though Kid claims he's just taking advantage of Luffy and Law's own plan for the opportunity to have his revenge on the Emperor, he nonetheless acts as a competent and loyal ally throughout the entirety of the raid, even teaming up with Law to take on Big Mom together.
  • Entitled Bastard: Kid was expecting to be labeled as one of the new Emperors after defeating Big Mom. So when he learns Luffy and Buggy took those spots, Kid is enraged and tries to kill Luffy to claim that title himself, completely overlooking that he needed Law's assistance just to pull out a win and Kid's own reputation is no where near enough to be labeled as an Emperor.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite being the cruelest of all the Supernovas, right down to crucifying his enemies, he deeply cares for his crew and especially his first mate, Killer, to the point he would go back to the prison mines just to follow him and gets really angry after seeing what Orochi has done to him. Kid also knows how much Killer despises his Signature Laugh and attacks anyone who mocks it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Kid is visibly disgusted during the Sabaody auction — he may be a bloodthirsty pirate, but doesn't run a slavery ring.
    • For all that he's a violent Jerkass who's difficult to get along with, he is sincere when he agrees to his alliance with Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins and trusts them as his allies on at least some level, as he is disgusted that they both betray him: Apoo directly by tricking him and never being genuine with the alliance to begin with, and Hawkins more indirectly by joining Kaido to save himself and never making any effort to help Kid when Kaido imprisoned him. After this double betrayal, Kid vows to never trust anyone outside his crew again.
  • Evil Counterpart: In his debut, Kid is present as an evil foil to Luffy: both have bounties of over 300 million by the time they reach Sabaody; both of their dragons are non-DF sword users who are also among the supernovas (Killer for Kid, Zoro for Luffy); both are gluttons that care immensely for their respective crews; both are hot-headed and join Law in an alliance to take down an Emperor (and both are a wilder counterpart to Law). However, while Luffy has a more friendly and kind personality, taking personal offenses in stride, Kid is more ruthlessly violent, murderous and destructive towards those outside of his crew, having killed countless innocent civilians for mocking his dream of becoming Pirate King. They both grow as they progress as a pirate, but while Luffy makes significant progress since entering the New World and his reputation grows, Kid continues to make the same mistakes and makes little progress. Shanks encouraged and inspired Luffy to become the Pirate King, while Shanks ended Kid's dreams for the same.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • As pointed out by Shakky and later Kid himself, the reason his bounty was higher than Luffy's at the time they met was because Kid causes a lot of civilian casualties because they mock him for his dream of becoming the Pirate King.
    • After entering the New World, he crucifies a group of pirates who Kid viewed as too cowardly to live, believing they didn't deserve to live for their cowardice.
    • After leaving Wano, Kid getting irritated with Shanks not paying him any attention (due to him focusing on Blackbeard not being at Wano, for their safety no less), Kid charges his Damned Punk cannon just to show him.
  • Evil Redhead: Kid's red hair denotes his aggressive and violent personality, and he is easily the most psychopathic of all the Supernovas. By the time the Supernovas are at Sabaody, Kid is the one with the highest bounty because, unlike Luffy, he's a danger to civilians and anyone who looks at him funny. When he reaches the New World, the first thing he does is to crucify fleeing pirates because of their cowardice.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Justified, as Kid believes a pirate in the New World should either align with an Emperor or fight him/her, and he personally wages war on three of them, two of which are Big Mom and Kaido, who are just as evil as he is. Ironically, he and his crew get undone by Shanks, the Token Good Teammate of the old guard of the Four Emperors.
  • Evil Virtues: Kid may be an amoral individual and a violent pirate, but he clearly displays loyalty towards his crewmates and whoever wishes to ally with him. When Apoo betrays him, Kid personally guns for him and when Luffy decides to ally with him and Law, he assists them whenever he could, even cheering for Luffy when he awakens his Devil Fruit. Similarly, even when Killer is forced to work for Orochi, Kid doesn't hold it against him and gladly welcomes him back and punishes whoever laughs at him.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Kid is known on the open seas for his ruthlessness and fearless impulsiveness that rivals his fellow Pirate King contender Luffy. While, like Luffy, it can get him into serious trouble at times, his wanton desire for carnage ultimately causes his bid to become Pirate King to be brought to a screeching halt by Shanks as a result of making the costly mistake of threatening the lives of Red-Hair's fleet.
    • Pride. Kid is massively prideful and refuses to back down from any challenge, no matter how impossible the task is. While Kid has the drive and passion to succeed in his dream of becoming the Pirate King, his unwillingness to compromise or back down from a challenge when it is obvious he won't win causes him and his crew nothing but problems. He attempts a rematch against Shanks after his win over Big Mom, thinking he's ready to take on an Emperor solo, yet he enters the fight completely unprepared and surrounded by Shanks' fleet, stubbornly refusing to back down even when Killer questions if this is a good idea. This costs him and his crew everything, as Shanks easily defeats Kid after seeing the destruction Kid was about to cause and sinks him and his crew to the bottom of the ocean.
    • His inability to learn from his mistakes. Despite the numerous setbacks and humiliations he faces, Kid never seems to acknowledge that he is not as strong as he thinks. His determination, no matter how strong, is not enough to achieve his goals. Although he made significant progress in Wano and increased his strength, Kid still refuses to ally with anyone. He arrogantly considers everyone outside his crew as a liability, thinking that his crew alone is all he needs to achieve his dreams. This stubborn and thoughtless behavior costs him a humiliating loss to Shanks in their rematch. He completely overlooked the fact that his victory over Big Mom was solely because he had Law helping him. Even together, they barely pulled out a win. Unfortunately, his dream of becoming the Pirate King is ruined once Shanks takes his Poniglyph rubbings and sinks his crew to the bottom of the ocean.
  • Fiery Redhead: Kid's red and pointy hairstyle emphasizes how dangerous he is and his short temper.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Eustass Kid used to be a gang leader calling the shots on an unaffiliated island in the South Blue. He, along with three of his potential crewmates, took revenge for the death of his first crush and set sail to explore the world beyond his narrow existence. Kid earned his bounty of 470 million Beli through a multitude of criminal activities, rather than being recognized as a significant threat to the World Government. His bounty skyrocketed to 3 billion Beli after he, together with Trafalgar Law, succeeded in bringing down Big Mom. Unlike Luffy and Law, who are the bearers of the "D" will, Kid doesn't belong to any special lineage.
  • Gang of Hats: He and his crew all have Heavy Metal-esque clothes.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: His most common move, bordering on a Signature Move, is taking as much metal as possible and forming huge fists out of it to crush his opponents.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: In his Post-Time Skip appearance, Kid wears a pair of goggles on his forehead but they don't serve a special purpose aside of making him resemble a mechanic.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Upon arriving at Elbaf, Kid challenges Shanks to a rematch thinking he's able to fight him now. When Shanks doesn't take him seriously, Kid becomes angry at the lack of respect for him and charges his Damned Punk to sink Shanks' fleet to goad the Emperor to fight him. Shanks foresees the damage he's going to do and takes Kid out in one powerful hit. To add insult to injury, Shanks then has his crew sunk to the bottom of the sea.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Gains some pretty nasty scars on his face and arm after the Time Skip, showing how vicious he is and how often he gets into a fight.
  • Glory Hound: Kid is one of the many pirates who aims to become the King of Pirates, the biggest recognition a pirate can get. He reluctantly joins Luffy and Law's alliance to take down Kaido and Big Mom solely to get the glory of defeating them and getting his revenge on Big Mom. Even after defeating Big Mom alongside Law and getting a massive bounty increase, Kid is furious to learn that Luffy is labeled an Emperor and not him and attempts to kill Luffy to claim the spot himself out of blind rage.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Kid is infamous for his bad temper, to the point where it crosses over from "unstable" to "dangerously psychopathic", making him the most dangerous to civilians among the Supernovas. Notably, when Luffy tells him to his face that he — not Kid — will become Pirate King, instead of getting angry, Kid approves of Luffy's attitude.
  • Handicapped Badass: Even after losing his prosthetic arm and cuffed to Seastone restraints, Kid is still capable of performing impressive feats such as carrying hundreds of stone blocks with one arm.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In chapter 1079, Shanks destroys Kid's Damned Punk cannon right as it fires (the same one used to defeat Big Mom, no less) - causing it to blow up in Kid's face and knock both him and Killer out.
  • Hot-Blooded: The man has a zeal for starting or joining fights and an iron will that could quite possibly exceed Luffy's, given that he's started trouble with three Emperors so far.
  • Humongous Mecha: During the battle against Big Mom and Kaido, Kid accumulates enough scrap metal to create a massive constructed armor resembling a mecha, adorned with a giant spiked skull.
  • Hypocritical Humour:
    • After they all fight with the Marines for a few minutes, Luffy (a Rubber Man) comments "You guys have some weird powers!" Kid, a Magnet Man, responds with "Yours is surely the weirdest."
    • Kid, Luffy, and Zoro yell at each other for blowing their cover at the Onigashima raid, which, of course, all three of them are guilty of.
  • Informed Ability: Although it's stated that Kid can use all three types of Haki in the "One Piece" world, he never employs them on-screen.
  • Instant Armor: His Punk Rotten technique summons a massive amount of junk metal that forms a huge exoskeleton of armor in mere moments.
  • I Work Alone: Kid hates having to rely on anyone, believing he and his crew alone can conquer the Grand Line and become the Pirate King. Even the raid on Onigashima has Kid uncaring towards his allies and carring more for his personal glory and revenge. Naturally, the Egghead Arc proves this to be his undoing, as he enters a fight with Shanks and his fleet, resulting in Shanks easily defeating Kid and his crew by himself without any allies around to help him.
  • Jerkass: When he isn't causing massive destruction or pettily murdering people for mocking his dream of becoming the Pirate King, Kid is usually rude, prideful and unpleasant towards anyone who isn't a part of his crew.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • His criticisms of the World Government and their hypocrisy have their merit.
    • When he and Luffy are confronted by the angry Dobon for all eating all of his kibi dangos, Kid curtly replies that they only did that after they did the job they were supposed to do.
    • He rages at Hawkins for siding with Kaido so easily rather than at least try to help them when he appeared is understandable, since Hawkins just gave up believing he had no choice rather than at least try. It's especially poignant when one remembers that Hawkins originally allied with Kid to take on another of the Four Emperors, Shanks. If he was willing to take on Shanks with Kid, then there's no reason for him not to take on Kaido with Kid either, even if Kaido is considered the most dangerous of the Four Emperors. Of course the difference is they were trying to make a plan for dealing with Shanks when they were ready while Kaido literally dropped in, taking them all by surprise.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: To anyone that isn't a part of his crew, he is openly violent and sociopathic, cares little about collateral damage, and is an unrepentant murderer; the only reason Kid is tolerated as an ally to the Straw Hats is because of Offstage Villainy, as well as him also wanting revenge against Kaido and Apoo. But following the Wano Arc, Shanks sees Kid's true character after his Combat Clairvoyance shows the wanton slaughter of the Emperor's fleet, and he decides that Kid's warranty has expired.
  • Ki Manipulation: According to Kaido, Kid has Conqueror's Haki, and the Visual Dictionary confirms that he knows Observation and Armament as well. He is preparing to face a rampaging Kaido alongside Law when they sense Luffy's heartbeat start up again at discovering Gear 5th. Surprisingly, he rarely employs them in combat, leaving him vulnerable to significant embarrassment and misfortune in the New World.

    L - Y
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Kid is a vile pirate, infamous for hurting innocent people, and his first acts upon entering the New World is to crucify some pirates who were attempting to flee back to Paradise, declaring that cowardly weaklings like them didn't deserve to step foot in the New World. In Chapter 1079, during the Egghead Arc, he gets destroyed by Shanks when he attempts to eradicate his fleet, many of whom are weaker pirates that rely on Shanks's protection to survive the New World, and his dream to become the King of Pirates is crushed.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Like Luffy and Ace, Kid is incredibly aggressive and impulsive and will gleefully start or join fights with zero forethought.
    • He blows his cover during the infiltration of Onigashima just to get his revenge on Scratchmen Apoo for selling out his crew.
    • When Shanks doesn't take him seriously, Kid's immediate action is to prepare Damned Punk to fire on the subordinate crews, leading to the Emperor unleashing his full strength and knocking Kid down with one hit.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Kid's magnetic powers and battle tactics (like assemble giant constructs of metal to smash onto the enemy) are dependent on there being a lot of metal around for him to use. Prior to confronting Kaido on Onigashima's rooftop, he spends a lot of time running around the castle, collecting as many weapons as he can.
    • If his Damned Punk cannon is disrupted at short-range, the resulting dissipation of the surrounding metal with the charge causes the attack to blow back on him, which Shanks uses to defeat Kid in a single blow.
  • The Lost Lenore: In his childhood, he and Killer had a massive crush on a girl named Victoria Shiruton Doruyanaika (or "Broth Splatterina" in English). One day, she was killed by the criminal gang ruling the Wretched Hive country they all resided in. Doruyanaika's death had a large impact on Kid; he and his crew even named their ship the Victoria Punk in her memory. He and Killer still hate curry udon noodles to this day due to their memory of the interaction.
  • Made of Iron: Tanks a direct, ground-shattering punch from Big Mom right on his face, and not only he hits her right back, he stands right back up with nothing more than a slight bruise. Even more so is that he continues to get hurt by Hawkins's powers during the fight with Big Mom and getting crushed to the ground by her and still continues to get up and fight with a smile on his face.
  • Magnetic Weapons: His Damned Punk is a gigantic railgun, powered by magnetism.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: His Devil Fruit ability allows him to control magnetism and he mostly uses it to manipulate metallic objects. Once he awakens his Devil Fruit, he could also attract and repel non-magnetic objects, and even people like Big Mom.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Kid's first name and surname were taken from two real-life pirates. The surname Eustass was taken from 13th century French pirate and mercenary, Eustace the Monk, and the name Kid from 17th century Scottish pirate and privateer, William Kidd, who was also nicknamed "Captain".
  • Nerves of Steel: His resolve is utterly unshakable. He'll fight anyone without a second thought, no matter how powerful they are, and is utterly undeterred by even the prospect of seemingly certain death.
    • He doesn't break even after receiving the beating of a lifetime and being left half-dead in a prison cell. During the Onigashima War, Kid directly attacks Big Mom, and is completely unafraid of the vast gulf in power, fully intending to take her all by himself. Even when Big Mom tries using her Soul Pocus on him and Law to replenish her strength, neither lose so much as a second of their lifespans because they simply don't fear her.
    • Kid is undeterred when facing Shanks, even luring him to attack him by firing on his crew. Unfortunately for him, Shanks foils the attack by attacking him first, but Kid isn't afraid of Shanks appearing in front of him, only surprised to see him on his ship.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After meeting Kaido for the first time, Kid is reduced offscreen into a bloody mess that can't even move.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Though Kid and Luffy share a common enemy in Kaido and Big Mom, Kid pointedly does not join Luffy's alliance and is unfazed by losing any "allies" not a part of his crew in the raid on Onigashima. He's here to get payback on the Emperors and that's it, he's just taking advantage of the opportunity Luffy created.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome:
    • Aside from the adventures he and his crew have already gone through in the New World (like surviving encounters with both the Big Mom and the Red-Haired Pirates), Kid briefly escapes from Udon prison, without help from Raizo or anyone else. The only reason he gets recaptured is because he recognizes Killer and tries to save him.
    • Kid also reveals that he fought and defeated a Sweet Commander then bullied them into giving him a Road Poneglyph rubbing.
  • Offstage Villainy: Until he's shown crucifying a pirate crew in the New World for trying to escape to "Paradise", and his attack on Shanks's crew in Egghead Arc, Kid is only described as the most dangerous and violent of the Supernova but he's never seen committing any crime. Some of his more noble qualities are shown towards his crew (and unwillingly when allied with Luffy), but at the end of the day he's just as violent, murderous, and unrepentant as many of the villains in the setting.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kid sports a short-lived but very scared espression when Shanks teleports to his position and fires Divine Departure on him, clearly not expecting to get instantly routed.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Kid seems to enjoy causing damage wherever he goes. His introductory scene is blasting a hole in a wall to attack Apoo, and he regularly smashes up his surroundings with his magnetic attacks. For example, Kid joins Luffy and Law in reducing a giant ship of the Animal Kingdom Pirates to driftwood, though any single one of them would've sufficed. When he fights Shanks, the latter's advanced Observation Haki predicts that Kid's Damned Punk would make short work of several of Shanks's ships as well as his men.
  • Pet the Dog: When Kaido's troops begin laughing at Killer during the raid on Onigashima, Kid flies into a rage and strikes them down. Even if he's a total psycho, laughing at his friend for the tragedy that befell him (especially since it saved his captain's life) is a no-go for Kid.
  • Powerful, but Incompetent: During his tag battle with Law against Big Mom, Kid demonstrates creative use of his Devil Fruit powers. However, despite being one of the few people who can use all three types of Haki in the "One Piece" world, he rarely employs them in battle in comparison to his devil fruit abilities. As a result, it is suggested that this is the main reason he suffers many defeats against the Four Emperors.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Once Kid has assembled his Damned Punk, he lets the Emperor he and Law have been fighting the whole time know what he thinks of her big talk:
Big Mom: Give me all you've got then! You think you can beat me? I'm Big Mom!!!
Kid: And that's why we're getting rid of you!
  • Properly Paranoid: During the meeting with Apoo and Hawkins to form an alliance, Kid tells Killer that he didn't really like Apoo and they shouldn't have called him. Turns out, he had good reasons as Apoo was a subordinate to Kaido and he never intended to honor the alliance.
  • Red Is Violent: He's the most violent of the Worst Generation, which is signified by the heavy use of red in his design.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • Kid share a particular dynamic with Trafalgar Law, the other most prominent Supernova. Their personalities pretty much complement the scheme with Kid being extremely violent and easily provoked while Law seems much more relaxed and calm. Their coloring (Kid being a redhead and Law having dark blue hair in the manga) and their clothing motifs (Kid with his Metallica-esque get-up and Law with his fur-lined clothes) also seem to reflect their opposing personalities. For bonus points, during the time that they work together on Onigashima and eventually team up to fight Big Mom, Kid has a red cape and Law has a blue cape.
    • Kid's personality contrasts his subordinate's, Killer. Killer is much more level-headed and reasonable than his captain, and had to calm Kid down when he's about to get into a fight with Scratchmen Apoo.
  • Revenge:
    • His main reason for allying himself with Luffy is that he wants revenge on the Emperors and particularly Kaido. After seeing Scratchmen Apoo at Onigashima, Kid smashes him for having sold out his crew.
    • His second attempt at fighting the Red Hair Pirates in order to avenge his first defeat and his arm ends up failing: Shanks doesn't even give him a chance to fight after seeing the extent of damage Kid is capable of, and destroys his Damned Punk cannon knocking him and Killer out, and then Dorry and Brogy finishing the job by destroying his ship.
  • Revenge Before Reason:
    • Justified, since Luffy and Zoro have already blown up their cover, but, the moment he notices Apoo, Kid reveals himself as well, solely to make him pay for having sold out his crew by smashing him with a gigantic metal arm.
    • Similarly, his attempt to take revenge for losing his arm and his first defeat makes him attack Shanks's crew to draw his attention, despite the man himself willing to give him a chance in a fair fight and only ignoring him to check on Blackbeard's status, all to draw his attention. Safe to say, it does not end well for him and his crew.
  • Sacrificial Lion: His swift defeat at Shanks' hands despite his joint successes with Luffy and Law in Wano serves as a tidy reminder to the audience that the remaining Supernovas are far from invincible.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!:
    • When Apoo calls him naive and an idiot for honestly believing their alliance would have been enough to take out an Emperor, Kid just smirks and calls his traitorous former ally "trash".
    • When Big Mom derides Law and Kid as fools for challenging her, he laughs at her and tells her her time is over.
  • Slasher Smile: When Kid smiles, it shows his deranged and evil personality.
  • Smug Snake: Due to having a massive bounty during his introduction, Kid is introduced as an arrogant pirate, mocking weak pirates for being in his way in becoming Pirate King. Despite having a versatile Devil Fruit, he is beaten off-screen by both the Red Haired Pirates and Kaido himself, losing an arm to the former and being imprisoned by Kaido. Once he and Law defeat Big Mom, Kid is even more arrogant than before, trying to attack Luffy out of anger for (supposedly) being the mastermind behind the Raid of Onigashima. Then he challenges Shanks to a rematch on Elbaf. Naturally, this was a terrible decision, as once Shanks sees a vision of Kid slaughtering his fleet, Shanks takes him out in one hit, takes his Road Poneglyphs and sinks his crew to the bottom of the sea.
  • Spikes of Villainy: His first outfit has spiky shoulders on his coat, giving him a punk-barbarian look. He doesn't have them anymore after the timeskip, but keeps his spiky-ish hair.
  • Social Darwinist:
    • With respect to the New World at least, he believes that no one without resolve or courage should even be there in the first place. Thus, he begins his time in the New World by crucifying a pirate crew for their cowardice in trying to escape to "Paradise" (a.k.a. the first half of the Grand Line).
"Live or die!!! Bastards without even that much resolve shouldn't have ever come to this ocean."
    • Fittingly, this proves to be his undoing as Kid, irritated with the Red Hair Pirates hosting several weaker crews (even by Paradise standards), decided to attack them to get Shanks's attention, after which Shanks proceeds to take him seriously and defeat him. Shanks may have left him alone if he just fought him in a straight fight, but attacking his weaker crewmembers made Shanks decide to end Kid and his crew.
  • Stock Shōnen Rival: All of the Worst Generation, except Killer and Zoro, are rivals to Luffy since they all aim to become the new Pirate King, but Kid is the only one to fit the shonen rival archetype. Aside from being the most prominent Supernova besides Trafalgar Law, Eustass Kid is insane, violent, and often butts heads with Luffy. It gets almost parodied when Kid and Luffy, as prisoners in Udon, turn the forced work into a competition. However, his determination to surpass Luffy in the race to become Pirate King leads to him attacking Shanks, which ends with Kid getting knocked out from the race.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: Overlapping with his pride, Kid is one of the most arrogant supernovas of the Worst Generation. He shows no fear when facing any challenge thrown at him and looks down on everyone around him, thinking himself superior to most. He refuses to accept help with anyone and arrogantly thinks he's more than capable of handling the Four Emperor's solo. His time in the New World showcases just how outclassed he really is compared to an emperor, as Kid suffers multiple defeats. Worse is that he never learns his lesson no matter how many times he is defeated. Kid decides he's ready to pick a fight with Shanks, thinking that having defeated Big Mom, he's ready to take an Emperor head-on. This is overlooking the fact he had Law's help, Big Mom went into the fight already wore down and injured, and they didn't so much 'beat' her outright and more won by 'ring out' so to speak. To make matters worse, he proceeds to do everything in his power to provoke Shanks into taking him seriously. Predictably, this was a horrible mistake on Kid's part he ends up paying the price for.
  • Taught by Experience: Subverted as Eustass Kid, an aspiring Pirate King, strongly believes in Social Darwinism. However, besides awakening his Devil Fruit powers, he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes even after facing a series of defeats in the New World from the Four Emperors. He relies only on himself and his crew to conquer the Grand Line and reach his goal, and hates relying on anyone else. This stubbornness eventually becomes his Fatal Flaw, and he gets disqualified from the race for the One Piece after experiencing multiple defeats.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • He helps Luffy and Law sink some of the Beast Pirates' ships and accompanies the Pirate-Ninja-Mink-Samurai Alliance on their raid to Onigashima, though he makes it clear he's only doing so to get revenge on Kaido.
    • The one thing Kid and Law can undisputably agree on is how they really don't like the idea of having to work together when they team up to fight Big Mom; Kid doesn't like Law telling him what to do, and Law doesn't like Kid stealing his thunder.
  • Tempting Fate: Upon arriving in Elbaf, Killer warns Kid that he lost his left arm to the Red Hair Pirates and didn't even see Shanks, and that Kid could lose his life if he's not prepared. Kid however, notes that's only if he loses. Come chapter 1079 and that exactly happens, Kid is unprepared and Shanks easily defeats him and sinks his crew to the bottom of the ocean.
  • Theme Naming: Aside from "Repel" which repels metal, Kid's attacks (Punk Rotten and Punk Gibson) are possibly inspired by names related to real-life rock.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Out of all the Supernovas, Kid without a doubt the most villainous. At Sabaody, he's the only one with a higher bounty than Luffy. Luffy gained his bounty by directly fighting against the World Government while Kid gained his by tearing a path of bloody destruction across the Grand Line. He's extremely cruel to his enemies (like when he crucifies a rival pirate crew who are implied to have already surrender) and cares only about his own personal ambition. Notably, the reason why he joins the fight against Kaido isn't to free Wano but to prove his superiority over the old generation. When Kid has his second confrontation with Shanks, his first instinct is to fire his strongest attack on Shanks' weak allied ships to provoke the emperor.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Kid at some point learned how to awaken the Magnet-Magnet Fruit's power. He admits he's not used to it yet, meaning it eats up a lot of his stamina, but he still turns Big Mom into a giant magnet during their fight. She then inadvertently pulls giant amounts of metal towards herself that bury her.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Parodied. Kid possesses a nearly infallible talent for goading people into reckless contests to make him shut up, such as challenging his fellow Supernovas to potentially tank a lethal attack for a game of chicken, or a race to see who can go over a humongous waterfall first. All these moments are Played for Laughs.
  • Uncertain Doom: Kid is last seen sinking to the bottom of the ocean alongside Killer and his crew after Victoria Punk is split in two by Dorry and Brogy.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Despite losing a hand to the Red Hair Pirates earlier, Kid underestimates Shanks and his crew due to his defeat of Big Mom, and ends up being beaten without technically doing anything against the Red Hair Pirates.
  • The Unfettered: If Eustass Kid has one redeeming quality, it's that he always goes after dogs bigger than himself. He has the ambition to get to the top, and as such goes out of his way to pick fights with those at the top of the pirate food chain. Deconstructed as he ends up picking a clearly avoidable fight with Shanks and ends up losing his ship and Poneglyphs and had his crew disbanded by force.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Luffy and his allies save Kid (and Killer) from drowning in Udon from Queen's sadistic game during Big Mom's rampage. Kid, however, has the gall to tell Luffy that he should be thanking him for not killing Luffy right there and leaves without a shred of gratitude to him or his allies for saving him.
  • Villainous Rescue:
    • He lunges at Apoo to get revenge on him for selling him out to Kaido, indirectly saving Luffy and Zoro from further harm from his music attacks.
    • He later saves Nami's group from an angry Big Mom, but Kid did so primarily so he can be the one to defeat her and tells them to get out of his way upon his arrival.
  • Worthy Opponent: Kid all but states that he considers Luffy and Laws worthy opponents when he admits that he beat up anyone who laughed at his dreams and that the only ones who will make it in the New World will be those that aim high. He consequently invites both Luffy and Law to meet up with him in the New World. Further proven when, during the Punk Hazard arc, he shows obvious delight at the fact that Luffy has finally showed up at the New World, and Law isn't a 'government dog'. Later on, when the three of them finally reunite during the Wano arc, despite his claims that he's only taking advantage of their alliance, he has little issue teaming up with them against Kaido and Big Mom and even (in his own way) cheers Luffy on when he begins the final round of his one-on-one fight with Kaido.
  • The Worf Effect: While plotting to take down Shanks with Apoo and Hawkins, Kaido arrives and beats Kid off-screen, leaving him in a bloody mess. The scene shows for the first time that Kaido means business. He is later effortlessly demolished by Shanks following the triumph at Wano to demonstrate that despite Kaido and Big Mom's fall, he is still nothing to be trifled with.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Even after his win against Big Mom, Kid learned nothing from the ordeal and foolishly provokes Shanks to fight him by trying to sink his fleet. Shanks gets the message and brutalizes Kid and Killer in one move. Shanks then takes his Ponygliph rubbings and allows Dorry and Brogy to sink his crew to the bottom of the ocean, thereby ruining Kid's dream of being the Pirate King.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Inverted: Kid can use his magnetic powers to pull himself towards structures with metal, like enemy ships. He also does this after awakening his Devil Fruit, using it on Big Mom when she tries to avoid his and Law's attacks.
