"Honey comes from bears! And bears come from hairs! And hairs come from dead people!"

The main protagonist, a refugee from the Land of Yeld.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: While she has gotten better at this, it's hard to get her to pay attention if she has a game or something else catches her eye.
  • Apologetic Attacker: When her hair started turning Deb the mermaid to stone.
  • Composite Character: Her personality is based on two little girls in Jake's neighborhood, both of whom make an appearance.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She may be a Medusa, but she is undeniably adorable.
  • The Ditz: A good chunk of this comes from being a small child without much life experience. Still she has a wild imagination and her classmates are much more logical thinkers than she is.
  • Fish out of Water: Or Snake Out Of Water. Modest starts out knowing nothing about Earth. Or Yeld. Or... anything.
  • Happily Adopted: She becomes Jake's daughter.
  • I Am Not My Father: Modest swears she will never be like her mother.
  • Idiot Hero: Granted she is about five or so. Still she is a bit behind her classmates.
  • Imagine Spot: Modest frequently lets her imagination run wild.
  • I Thought Everyone Could Do That: She's surprised that nobody else can compress their head to squeeze into tight spaces.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Modest has several dozen sisters.
  • Parental Favoritism: Modest is the heir and only one her mother will not eat. She didn't seem to name the others.
  • Playing with Fire: One of the first spells Jenny teaches her is how to create blue fire. She then starts playing with it and sets the yard on fire.
  • Raised by Humans: The general premise of the comic is Modest being raised by a human on Earth.
  • Snake People: Her lower body is that of a snake and she has snakes for hair. Even the parts of her that resemble human have a lot in common with snakes.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Modest loves her Chocodiles.
  • You Can Talk?: Having one of the main characters unable to talk got old fast, so she was changed from a strange monster to a five year old after a couple of strips.
Marah: Each character has a spacial job, and if you switch their hats they can learn new jobs!
Modest: How do you find new hats?
Jake: You can talk?

    Jake

Jake Richmond

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jake_6.png
Jake

"Listen! I am stuck with you! I didn't ask for you to show up in my toilet. But you did, and I'm glad."

A human resident of Earth, that takes Modest in, and eventually decides that he will protect her from everything that might hurt her, physically or emotionally.

  • Author Avatar: Jake the webcomic's author initially stated that the book was a bit autobiographical, aside from the magic stuff. Of course that was before the magic stuff became the dominant element in the story.
  • Blatant Lies: Told Modest the school across the street was a child prison. This came back to bite him when he tried to enroll her.
  • The Bus Came Back: He is completely absent from season 2, excluding some bonus strips at the end of the volume. He returns early in season 3.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's an all-around geek and bit of a loser, but damn, can he hold his own against chainsaw-unicorn!
  • Distressed Dude: Spends the second season locked up in a dungeon while the girls have to come save him.
  • Muggle Foster Parents: He's an ordinary guy raising a magical Cute Monster Girl.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Manages to kill the lake monster underwater with a kitchen knife. Then he swims into the mermaids' net and drowns, again off screen.
  • Parental Substitute: He acts as Modest's dad. Eventually he claims her as his daughter.
  • Sink or Swim Fatherhood: Jake suddenly finds himself responsible for five year old Cute Monster Girl.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Punches Jenny as soon as he sees her on Earth. To be fair she did drown him last time they met.

    Marah

Marah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marah.png
Marah

"Medusa and I came here to rescue my uncle from her stupid mom and your stupid prince. It wasn't easy! I had to swim through a toilet! And there was a horse with a freaking chainsaw for a head! And the only guy who could help me is dead now! But I'm not giving up!"

Jake's niece and Modest's best friend.

  • Action Girl: And then some. When she first arrived in Yeld she was armed with nothing but a cheap cosplay sword. By the end of the journey she was leading a small rebellion, raising a skeletal dragon, and storming the castle of the realm's ruler to fight him in a duel.
  • Came Back Strong: After her apparent death in season 3, Marah returns as a Drudge Angel.
  • Clingy MacGuffin: Urano's armor manages to attach itself to Marah's wrist and starts to slowly over her arm, rebuilding itself. She is unable to remove it. Fortunately she can turn it into a bracelet at will.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Marah was warned by her future self that the Prince is undefeatable. She manages to pull off a win anyway, but it costs her.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Goes around saying she knows an oath-breaker, but didn't consider what oath-breaker means.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: She forgets she now has Super-Strength when taken captive until the guards ask her how she can wield a weapon that is larger than she is.
  • Gamer Chick: One of the first things she does is teach Modest how to play video games.
  • Horned Humanoid: Exposure to Yeld caused her to start growing horns.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Jaspar offers her a beer, which she tells him she can't have. Upon realizing all the things she currently has to deal with and Yeld's apparent lack of drinking laws, she keeps drinking.
  • Not Quite Dead: Despite being carried off by a Valyrie-like Drudge Angel, Marah returned briefly, explaining that she hadn't died but was still trapped in Yeld.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When Jenny comes for revenge Marah apologizes while giving a "The Reason You Suck" Speech. This causes Jenny to lose her will for revenge.
  • Summon to Hand: Marah is able to summon Lonesome Ocean to her hand, even if it has to fly through several walls to get to her.
  • Take a Third Option: During the Tower of Autumn arc Marah encounters two adult versions of herself from very different timelines, one where she returned to Earth alone and eventually went to work for the NSA studying magic related incidents, the other where she continued to explore Yeld, becoming a monster and forgetting about Jake. Both try to persuade her to follow the paths they took. Marah isn't happy with ether of them and chooses to fight the Prince anyway. Readers will already know this didn't work out for her, but she accomplishes her goal.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Yeld has it's hooks in her, making her unable to return to Earth, but she is searching for a way around it.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: When going to the magical land of Yeld she assumes she can pay her way with copper coins, as she read it in Jake's D&D manuals. The innkeeper is unimpressed by her bag of pennies, but is willing to take Modest's DS in trade.

    Jenny

Jenny aka The Blue Mermaid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jenny_5.jpg
Jenny

A mermaid that caused a lot of trouble before realizing she didn't have to be bad. Currently trying to help Modest get ready to deal with all the problems she'll face from Yeld when she gets older.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She has blue skin.
  • The Atoner: Jenny and her friend were once pretty horrible, and even kicked the story off by tricking Modest into playing in a dangerous area in the lake in Yeld where they were all at although that was apparently part of a plan from The Prince and The Gorgon, which they were just following without caring much how safe it was for Modest. She reexamined her entire life after her encounters with Marah and learning of Marah's showdown with The Prince of Yeld: "Every one of us who thought it didn't matter if we were bad because we lived in a cruel land under an evil prince... now we know we don't have to be that way."
  • Bathtub Mermaid: She is fully capable of moving around on land, but spends a good chunk of her time chillen in Kate's bathtub watching TV.
  • Category Traitor: She seeks to find a better way of life, but the other mermaids turn on her for abandoning what they already had.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Invoked. After teaching Modest how to set fires and going home, she comes back wearing pajamas, trying to earn points by claiming she rushed back without taking the time to change. Kate then points out she conjured the PJs in the car. She also could have saved time by giving the instructions over the phone.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. Jake still holds her drowning him and everything else she has done against her, barely tolerating her presence.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Starts wearing one after the events of season 2. On Yeld she wore one with a heart on it, but wears a simple black one one Earth.
  • Eye Scream: She loses an eye in a fight with Marah armed with a kitchen knife. She starts wearing an eye patch after that.
  • Fish out of Water: A literal sense that she was surprised she ended up on land when she came through the portal at the bottom of the lake. Downplayed as she adapts to life on Earth rather well, though we rarely see her interacting with anyone outside of the main characters and Jake's family.
  • Never My Fault: Doesn't consider it her fault that Modest was swallowed by the lake monster and ended up on on Earth after she told her about the portal in an attempt to get the lake monster to eat her. She is annoyed that the Gorgon made her and Deb watch the lake for her return. She also said it's not her fault Jake can't hold his breath for an hour after she trapped him in a net. Still she takes offense to the suggestion that Jake was only unconscious.
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: Played for laughs as Ms. Kohli doesn't believe Modest after a magical mishap and calls Jake to ask if Jenny is a real friend or imaginary. Jake tells her she's an enemy.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: The other mermaids made it clear she isn't welcomed back with them.

People of Earth

    Housemates and Human Relatives

Charles

One of Jakes housemates. Jake isn't quite sure what he does for a living, but calls him a fish scientist.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses an arm to the chainsaw unicorn at the end of the first season. They couldn't find it as Modest for some reason took it with her to Yeld.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Modest had mistaken him for a girl.
  • Happily Married: He has been married to Sarah this whole time.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: He is accused of murdering Jake when the latter goes missing. Ironically two end up sharing a jail cell.

Kate

Jake's sister and Marah's mother.

Will

Jake's younger brother.
  • Cool Bike: He drives a motocrycle.
  • Cool Uncle: Marah certainly seems to like him.
  • It May Help You on Your Quest: Parodied as he gives Marah a cosplay sword when she starts talking about Yeld, not really beliving her. It does end up helping her.
  • One-Steve Limit: He happens to share a name with Will Benedetti, a Kickstarter backer who earned a cameo and was introduced a few pages later. Charles mixes up their numbers when he needs a ride home from the Hospital, intending to call Jake's brother Will.

Sarah

The owner of the house Jake lives and Charles's wife.

Nick

Jake's brother.
  • Flat Character: We don't know much about him beyond being Jake's brother.

Bev

Jake's mother.

    Teachers and Students

Lyn Booth

Modest's homeroom teacher and Jake's ex. She also was once Jake and Deena's teacher.
  • Easily Forgiven: Modest takes back everything she said about her after she gives her a chocodile.
  • Evil Teacher: She and Modest got off to a bad start, with the latter viewing her as her enemy. She also took Modest's sandwich at lunch and wouldn't let her go out for recess. Subverted as Jake had packed a second sandwich for Ms. Booth as part of their agreement and she didn't let Modest go out due to Ms. Kohli's safety concerns.
  • Noodle Incident: She was Jake's teacher, but then mysteriously disappeared. When she returned she was a year younger than him.
  • Older Than They Look: Deena was shocked to see she looked the same as she did 20 years ago when she was her teacher.
  • Skewed Priorities: A minor example but she calls in sick to play a video game and considers calling in sick the next day as she doesn't think she could beat it in one.
  • Stern Teacher: She can be rather strict with Modest, but largely because she gets in trouble so much and she is trying to teach her to behave.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: An odd take on it. She used to be Jake's teacher, but disappeared for a while. After her return she started dating Jake, now about the same age and working at the same school. They avoided Teacher/Parent Romance as they broke up before Jake got Modest.
  • Vague Age: She looks the same as she did 20 years ago. She disappeared for a while and it's not clear if she stopped aging or traveled through time.

Joyce Kohli

The vice principal at Modest's school.

Ekans/Meg

Modest's best friend who she met shortly after losing Marah.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She brings a tent when they explore the passages under the schools. They end up using it.
  • Muggle Best Friend: Unlike Modest, she finds she is unable to do magic, no matter how much she wants to.
  • Tom Boy: She likes to climb onto the roof or jump out the window.

Gene/Gina

One of Modest's classmates and Ekans' best friend. He is AFAB and transitioned over the summer break.
  • Drama Queen: She gets shades of this when she becomes jealous of how much time Ekans has been spending with Modest, resulting in a fight.
  • Important Haircut: Cuts his hair when he transitions to a boy.
  • Old Friend, New Gender: Was first introduced as a girl, but came back from summer break as a boy.

Kevin Tyson

One of Modest's classmates.

Ha Yoon

Another of Modest's classmates

     Other humans

Deena

Ekans/Meg's mom. She used to go to the same school as Jake.
  • Failed a Spot Check: She didn't notice her daughter was four stories tall and fighting an inflatable Halloween decoration while doing her rounds.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She had met Jake when they were in school together, but had forgotten by the time they met up as adults when their kids started hanging out together. After a while they realize it.

Villains

    The Prince

Dragul, The Prince of Yeld

"Didn't you know? In my Kingdom, everything good and pure becomes a monster eventually."

The vampiric ruler of the Land of Yeld. When Dragul first came to Yeld he swore an oath to the last King to serve and protect the people of the land. Dragul remained loyal for many years until the King died from old age. Dragul wasted little time in claiming the throne, bringing back the exiled race of Fairies to be his own personal army. Some of the Old King's knights chose to serve Dragul, while others - dubbed Oath-breakers- escaped with a princess that was heir to the throne. Dragul claims that his current machinations are an attempt to ensure his own heir Modest will be safe from his enemies and be a better ruler than him. And if some people have to die along the way to make that possible, so be it.

  • Archnemesis Dad: Modest wants nothing to do with her father and for good reason.
  • Affably Evil: The Prince frames everything he does as simply being the result of Yeld itself being a cruel land. His argument that he's just trying to set things up for his heir to be a better ruler almost seem reasonable... until you remember that he's killing a lot of children along the way.
  • Crown of Horns: The helmet he is always seen wearing has to large horns.
  • Evil Parents Want Good Kids: He wants his heir to be a better ruler than he is.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He is Modest's father.
  • Maker of Monsters: He turned a talking horse into a chainsaw unicorn in a moment. Seems like he does this sort of thing often.
"I'm the Prince of Yeld. I make monsters."
  • Tin Tyrant: Never seen without his armor and Badass Cape.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: The Prince is apparently a vampire, but had no problem fathering children (with a giant snake no less).
  • Sore Loser: He loses to Marah by the rules of their duel, only to strike her down and go back on their bet. Only the Drudge Angel showing up to collect Marah causes him to allow Jake and Modest to return to Earth.
  • The Usurper: He was originally one of the King's generals, but after the King died he sealed away the Princess and seized power for himself.
  • Villainous Parental Instinct: Zigzagged. He seems to care about Modest on some level, switching between sending her to Earth for her own protection and keeping her by his side. He left a copy of himself inside her mind to educate her when it was time for her to learn magic.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Somewhat justified. The Land of Yeld opens up gateways to Earth, specifically luring in children who have some adventures... before being changed by the land into magic and superhuman creatures that can't return home. The Prince shows no mercy in dealing with the youngsters he runs into.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Has no issues with dueling and killing a girl.

    Modest's mom

The Gorgon aka Modest's mom

"I can save him. And he can save me!"

A train-sized snake that is the mother of Modest, and a servant of The Prince of Yeld.

  • Baby as Payment: She provided the Prince with an heir as part of their deal.
  • Eats Babies: Her own, no less. Eating her offspring while they're still in their most immature state apparently extends her lifespan.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She truly does love Modest. Too bad this doesn't seem to extend to the rest of her children.
  • Evil Matriarch: She eats her own children. Enough said.
  • Offing the Offspring: The Gorgon eats many of her children but is protective of Modest.
  • Deal with the Devil: Her decision to eat her children seems to have been influenced heavily by a bargain with their father, The Prince of Yeld. Part of the bargain includes The Prince selecting one of their children to be his heir. Her commitment to the bargain fluctuates.
  • Single Sex Offspring: She is only capable of producing female offspring with Modest being an odd exception.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: A mixed bag example. She's certainly as cold and innocent as they come on the surface. A flashback reveals at one time she was as kind and gentle as Modest. But Hydras divide their minds into five parts, and as they grow and mature the part of their brain that contains human-like kindness (and the vaguely humanoid body that houses that part of the mind) withers and grows dormant, while the logical, predatory, and cold "hair snakes" grow and become the dominant part of the mind. Very little of Gorgon's emotions remain.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: A flashback showed that she looked just like Modest when she was her age. Not so much in the present.

Modest's Other Family

    Modest's Other Family

Naga aka Aunt Naga aka Auntie

"It was selfish to bring you here. But my sisters meant everything to me. And after mother brought me to my new family, my new brother meant just as much. I wanted you to know your sisters, and for them to know you. I wanted to know you too."

Modest's Aunt, a giant snake that has devoted herself to protecting and caring for her remaining nieces.

  • Snakes Are Sinister: Fully subverted, Naga is kind and heroic, selflessly seeking to look after her nieces.
  • Snake People: Like Modest, most of them have the lower half of a snake and a humanoid upper half.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Naga's mother found a family of Fairies in a city that took Naga in and adopted her.

Science

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sisters.png
The Medusa Sisters: Science, Modest, Hole, Shut Up, Ecksbocks, and Glados.

"You HAVE to keep your snakes under control. Don't you know what will happen?"

Modest's sister, who has tried to be a leader of the group as best as she can.

  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Science wears a pink shirt.
  • Control Freak: Somewhat justified, since her sisters tend to be very impulsive and have poor memories, and she's also terrified that they will "go snakey" and transform to be like their dangerously cold and murderous mother.

Glados

"Don't worry Snakes. I promise I'll never eat you. Well... maybe one of you."

Modest's sister, and possibly the most-level headed of the siblings. While she's content to let Science play the leader for the most part, she can step in to take control of things at times, particularly if she thinks that Science is doing something detrimental to her sisters.

  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Glados wears a faded red shirt.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • The Stoic: Glados doesn't have the perky and energetic personality of her sisters, and even has a distinctive squinty look, similar to when the others look frustrated. Except when she's baking, and her eyes open wide with enthusiasm.

Hole

"This is the Sausage Shop! Hot Sausage! On a stick! The Jerky Hut! Sam's Sushi Parlor! And my favorite. Fresh berry pie!"

Modest's sister, a good-natured food-lover.

Shut Up

"The rabbit sword is the coolest! It'll be mine someday! Then I'll be an adventurer too! And I can travel all over Yeld with Shin!"

Modest's sister and "the toughest medusa" among the siblings, Shut Up dreams of becoming a heroic adventurer one day.

Ecksbocks

"It was so scary. But after it was over I felt like I had finally become me."

Modest's sister, Ecksbocks has turned into a giant snake like her mother, but still retains her human-like emotions and cares for her family very much.

Other denizens of Yeld

The Knight of Chains Unmarked Spoilers

The Knight of Chains aka "Chainsaw Unicorn"

"YOU MADE HER A MONSTER!"

A unicorn with a chainsaw for a horn and a servant to Modest's mother, with a very complicated relationship with her going back to their childhood.

  • Chainsaw Good: The unicorn sent after the Medusa has a chainsaw for a horn.
  • Cop Killer: Kills two officers while on the run on Earth.
  • Emergency Transformation: A non lethal example. Yeld started to turn him into a monster so Gorgon turned him into a horse to spare him from that fate.
  • Hero Killer: Kills Urano.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The story was mainly a light hearted comedy until he showed up and cut off Charles' arm.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about him without bringing up his backstory and his attack on Sarah's household.
  • Was Once a Man: He was originally a boy who wondered into Yeld and unable to get back. He was transformed into a normal, albeit talking, horse when he started turning into a monster, only to get turned into a chainsaw unicorn years later.

    Mermaids

Mermaids in general

Known as "The Daughters of the Deep", they were created as shock troopers in the Deep's war against Prince Dragul. However many abandoned the cause and found refuge on land under the Prince's protection.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: They have a wide range of skin colors, such as blue, purple, pink, red, and yellow.
  • Ear Fins: They all have fin like ears.
  • One-Gender Race: They are known as "The Daughters of the Deep" and we have only seen females so far. Little clues suggest there are only females.
  • Proud Warrior Race: They were created as shock troopers. Even those who have abandoned the Deep retain a certain level of warrior spirit.

Deb AKA The Purple Mermaid

Jenny's long time friend. They have been together since they hatched.

     Hunters of Yeld

Vargagas

The prince's chief advisor, the speaker of the Kingdom's Royal Court and heir to the House to Fasteon.
  • Co-Dragons: While Kerrigor is the commander of the armies, Vargagas seems to frequently work with him, both reporting directly to the Prince.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While he is fine working for the Prince and kidnapping children, he seems genuinely shocked when the Prince reneges on his bet with Marah.

Kerrigor

The commander of the Prince's armies and the lord of the Shadow Cliff.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: When the Medusa sisters are wandering the castle opening doors they stumble upon Kerrigor changing, only wearing his helmet and heart print boxers.
  • Cool Helmet: He is never seen without his horned helmet, even if he is otherwise down to his boxers.
  • The Dragon: The Prince's right hand and commander of his armies.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: He wears white boxers with hearts on them.
  • One-Winged Angel: When in a fight he grow to 10ft tall and his armor turns dark red. Flames start coming off of him.
  • Sizeshifter: Normally he is about the size of the average adult human, but in battle he grows to 10ft tall.

    The Pirates

Captain Jaspar

"I'm not even left handed!"

A pi-rat and leader of the Pirates. He has a habit of hiring crew based on their names, resulting in a crew of two Carloses and two Raccoons. A bit of a drinker.

Roland

Captain Jaspar’s first mate.

Carlos

The more sensible of the pi-rats named Carlos.

Carlos

The crazier of the two pi-rats named Carlos.

Raccoon

A Fairy and formerly one of The Prince's soldiers, he hooked up with the pirates because it's safer.

  • One-Steve Limit: Jaspar hired him because his name wasn't Carlos. However he didn't reveal his name until after they picked up Raccoon Medusa.

Raccoon

One of Modest's sisters. She got separated from her sisters immediately after being rescued from The Prince and The Gorgon, but hooked up with the friendly pirates.
  • Hero of Another Story: She's left out of all the adventures her sisters have, but her own pirate-filled story is proceeding along in the background.

    The Oath-breakers

The men and women of Yeld are forced to swear loyalty to The Prince, thus those that choose to fight against him are labeled "Oath-breakers".

Urano

The first Oath-Breaker encountered by Modest and Marah. When he died, he passed on his role as protector to Marah.

  • Category Traitor: He has sworn loyalty to the old King. His refusal to swear loyalty to the new Prince has branded him a traitor.
  • The Oath-Breaker: He is known for breaking his oath of loyalty to the crown. Ironically, he retains his loyalty, simply refusing to swear loyalty to the Prince and instead following the will of the old king by protecting the people.
  • Take Up My Sword: When he dies he passes his armor and mission onto Marah.

Shin

A human child that wandered into Yeld and became trapped there, turning to heroism. When not fighting The Prince's more dangerous forces, he helps look after Modest's sisters.

  • Hero of Another Story: He is one of the characters from the RPG and has his own story. He clearly has a history with the fairy they encountered shortly after meeting Modest.

Jamie and Michelle

An adult brother and sister that were saved from The Prince's forced by the Knight of Chains. In gratitude they try to help the Knight of Chains when they can, especially by caring for Modest and her sisters.

Benloo

A Fairy, and technically one of The Prince's soldiers. But Benloo is so far on the outskirts of the Prince's domains that he's mainly just interested in keeping peace and making sure everyone is okay, which extends to trying to protect Modest's sisters.

  • Token Heroic Orc: He is one of the few fairies trying to help the people of Yeld, which he does behind the Prince's back.

    The New Abolishers
Long before the rise of Yeld's first king, before animals of Earth came to Yeld and became intelligent, and even before the first civilization of the Fairies, The Serpent God ruled over Yeld. The Serpent God's children were the Hydras, Dragons, and snakes, and some of those children became Oracles able to communicate with The Serpent God - blessed with the ability to see the future, but unable to answer questions about it. But eventually The Serpent God's power waned and she withdrew. The Abolishers are a fanatical new sect of Fairies that are attempting to rekindle worship of The Serpent God, overthrow The Prince of Yeld, and exile all non-Fairies out of Yeld. As Fairies, many of the New Abolishers are able to hide among the ranks of The Prince's army. In particular they hope to obtain a new Oracle of The Serpent God to be on their side.
  • The Fundamentalist: The New Abolisher that Modest first encountered was a violent example, utterly devoted to his beliefs and willing to destroy anyone in his way - even creatures supposedly beloved by The Serpent God.
