Sullivan family

    As a whole
    Patricia and Isabelle O'Sullivan

Tropes that apply to both

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pat_and_isabel.jpg
Patricia (right) and Isabel (left)
  • Academic Athlete: At their old school, they worked hard to keep their grades up, and as a result behavd quite snobbish to their less-gifted peers. They're also both Passionate Sports Girls, with Pat having a soft spot for lacrosse.
  • The Ace: The O'Sullivan twins were both the best athletes and the top students at their old school. They don't take to St. Clare's well at first. The first episode is literally called I Hate St. Claire's.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Various book covers of the series depict the O'Sullivan twins with blonde hair. In the anime, their hair is dark brown.
  • Always Identical Twins: Patricia and Isabel look so similar that they successfully pull Twin Switches to prank their fellow classmates. Though personality wise, Patricia is more outspoken and brash, while Isabel is more of a Shrinking Violet.
  • Character Development: The twins start off as bratty and snobbish, but they mellow out over the first few episodes as they grow to like St. Clare's.
  • Demoted to Extra: Despite being the main characters, for the latter half of the anime they get less and less focus, while their classmates get more.
  • Dub Name Change: In the German dub of the anime, Pat became Hanni and Isabel became Nanni.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Of the siblings, Isabel is more graceful, while Patricia is obsessed with rebelling against the rules.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Appearance wise, the only difference between Pat and Isabel is the way they wear their hair, with Isabel wearing her hair down with a headband and Pat wearing hers in a ponytail.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Both of them have hair that goes past their shoulders. Isabel manages hers with a hairband, while Pat dons a Tomboyish Ponytail.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Patricia was The Ace at lacrosse at her old school, and loves playing in Belinda's team. Belinda even asks Pat to take over as the Team Captain when she leaves.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Patricia wears her hair in a ponytail with a pink scrunchie, and Isabel wears her hair down with a hot pink hairband.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Pat has more aggressive traits than her kind, soft-hearted sister. She's also more likely to break the rules while Isabel refuses to.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Pat is more hot-headed and brash, while Isabel is more calm and studious, adjusting to St. Clare's slightly faster than her sister.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Between the twins, Patricia is more tomboyish while Isabel is the girly-girl. Isabel is quieter, demure and assimilates to St. Clare's quicker, but Patricia is wild and often gets in trouble for her behaviour.
  • Twin Switch: In the second episode, Patricia, not wanting to do the cleaning for Belinda, sends Isabelle in her place while she goes shopping. Belinda finds out, but is quite amused.

Patricia Sullivan (パトリシア・サリバン)

Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (Japanese), Léa Gabrielle (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Mar Roca (Catalan Spanish), Maria João Vicente (European Portuguese), Emanuela Pacotto (Italian), Dascha Lehmann (German), Suheir Fahad (Arabic), Aila Comla (Tagalog)

The hot-headed, brazen and rebellious sibling of the O'Sullivan family. Patricia loves sports (especially lacrosse), playing rough, often speaks back to adults. She often plays pranks, which she ropes Isabel into helping.

Patricia O'Sullivan
  • Bratty Half-Pint: She often acts as if the rules don't apply to her and tries to get out of doing work, which typically results in her being berated or punished.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Sort of, as she's nicknamed "Pat" (from her name, Patricia). Pat is typically a men's name.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: She loves playing with Blinky, the stray puppy adopted by the first formers of Saint Clare's.
  • Hot-Blooded: In the first episode, Patricia can't control her rage when she's told she has to go to Saint Clare's, and argues with her parents. At Saint Clare's, she gets into verbal arguements with the other girls (particularly Janet) because they dislike her behaviour.
  • In-Series Nickname: Everyone calls her "Pat".
  • Jerkass: She looked down upon Saint Clare's because it wasn't the same as her old school, and also constantly pressured Isabel to help her get away with breaking the rules.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Patricia is often a lazy, self-centered, jerk to her classmates and sometimes made Isabel take the fall for her actions (such as forcing her into her Zany Schemes and making her work for Belinda under the guise that she was her). However, she is also brave enough to stand up to the school board and ask that they show mercy to her classmates when they need it, and opposes the bullying of Doris.
  • The Leader: Between Isabel and Patricia, Patricia is the one that takes charge and decides what they'll do.
  • Mouthy Kid: Patricia doesn't hide her disdain for St. Clare's at all. Unsurprisingly, this doesn't make her popular amongst the girls.
  • Tomboy: Loves sports? Check. Boisterous? Check. Gender-Blender Name? Check. An absolute menace when she's mad? Big check.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She has unkempt, wild brown hair that she often ties in a ponytail.

Isabel O'Sullivan
  • The Cutie: Her classmates think she's adorable and very pretty.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Isabel is a good natured girl and often smiles, looking angelic when she does.
  • Proper Lady: She is the more organized of the twins, and dilligently follows the school's rules post-Character Development.
  • Nice Girl: She's down to earth and has a lot of empathy for others. She disagrees with Pat's aggressive behaviour at times and is the more well-liked of the twins.
  • The Quiet One: Patricia speaks most of the time, while Isabel is less social. Though, she does raise her voice at her parents for sending her to St. Clare's, and is quite ineractive with the other girls when Pat's not around.
  • The Smart Guy: While both girls are Academic Athletes, Isabel puts more focus on her grades and she's better at geography.

  • Good Parents: In the twin's flashback, they're both shown to be very doting and close to their children, and they sent them to the titular school with their best interests in mind.
  • Happily Married: Patricia's drawings of them depict them as a happily married couple.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: They sent their children to Saint Clare's as they were worried their children were too snobbish. They were right, and sending them there straightened them out properly.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/allison_3.png
Allison O'Sullivan
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Her hair colour wasn't mentioned in the books, but in the anime it's red.
  • Beta Bitch: Allison adores Alpha Bitch Madeleine, and wants to be popular just like her. She always sucks up to her hoping that she'll get her attention.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: While Allison loves playing sports, she's very clumsy and prone to injuring herself.
  • The Ditz: She isn't very smart, such as falling for a dieting scheme that's obviously unhealthy, and getting worse grades than most of the class on a regular basis.
  • The Klutz: On her first day of school, she accidentally sets fire to a fifth-former's research papers. That, and her inability to follow the rules makes her not liked amongst the rest of her peers.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Like her book counterpart, Allison is an air-headed idiot looking for anyone to lollygag over, in this case Madeleine.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Her swimsuit shows off a lot of skin, which she's oblivious to. Yes, all the girls have the same suit, but Allison in particular gets Leg Focus and close ups of her shoulders.

Saint Clare's

First Formers

    As a whole
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: While all girls have varying hair colours, in the episode focusing on the Precious Puppy Hillary (blonde), Pat (bruntette) and Catherine (redhead) discover a stray puppy and decide to take it in.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When a stray puppy arrives to the campus, all the girls Squee.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The class is comprised of two twins breaking their old snobby habbits, an animal-loving Nice Girl from a poor family, a Redheaded Stepchild prone to being bullied, a fat girl who's bad at sports and a prankster who has trouble expressing herself.
  • Sweet Tooth: They all love candy and whenever they throw their secret parties, there's always something sugary.
  • Team Pet: Blinky, Catherine's puppy. Though he blongs to Catherine, all the girls treat him as if he's their own and constantly give him food and pets.
  • Those Two Girls: Each girl has a friend group of her own, usually with two or more people - Allison/Joan/Doris, Doris/Catherine/Janet, Isabel/Patricia/Janet/Doris....
  • Zany Scheme: Many an episode are about the girls trying to bunk off class or secretly throw parties without the teachers noticing. The most egregipus of these would be when the girls are tasked to make fancy wooden boxes in woodwork class, but Patricia and some others don't want to do it...so they commission a carpenter to do it instead.
    Catherine Gregory

Catherine Gregory

Voiced by: Miki Narahashi (Japanese), Laurence Dorlens (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Bargalló (Catalan Spanish), Margarida Machado (European Portuguese), Marina Massironi (Italian), Cathlen Gawlich (German), Majida Al-Imam (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

A kind-hearted girl from the first former's class. She comes from a poor family.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kath.png
Catherine
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: The books never mention her hair colour, but in the anime it's very red.
  • Dub Name Change: She is Kathleen in the German, French and Arabic dubs.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She takes a shine to a stray puppy and wants to be a vet because she loves animals.
  • Good Is Dumb: Patricia notices that the girl's money has been going missing lately. It turns out Catherine is the thief...because she wanted to buy presents for everybody, being poor herself. Even Pat can't fault her for that and argues with the board not to suspend her.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Catherine, Katherine or Kathleen?
  • Nice Girl: She's a calm, gentle girl who wants to become a veterinarian. She's the one who teaches Isabel how to clean shoes and make tea for the older students without judgment.
    Doris Elward

Doris Elward

Voiced by: Sanae Miyuki (Japanese), Laurence Saquet (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Unknown (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Unknown (Italian), Ilona Brokowski (German), Tahani Abd Al-Rahman/Wafa Qusous (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

A cheerful girl from the first former's class.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doris_1.png
Doris Elward
  • Class Clown: She frequently makes the class laugh through one amusing antic after the other, and often pranked the twins when they were new.
  • A Day in the Limelight: One episode focuses in the bullying she receives from Madeleine and her low self esteem issues.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has red hair and is very free spirited.
  • Genki Girl: She's very cheery and excitable, especially with the twins and Katherine.
  • The Hyena: Doris is prone to laughing hysterically at small things. She also hopes to incite this reaction, being the Class Clown.
  • Hair Color Dissonance: Her hair appears to be brown in some frames, and cherry red in the other.
  • Pink Is Feminine: When Doris isn't wearing her school uniform, she's wearing something pink.
    Janet Robbins

Voiced by: Hinako Emori (Japanese), Guylaine Gilbert (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Núria Trifol (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Irene Scalzo (Italian), Natascha Rybakowski (German), Nadira Emran (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

A girl from the first former's class who loves to play pranks.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/janet_r.png
Janet Robbins
  • A Day in the Limelight: Episode 5 is Janet's Birthday Episode and has the girls throw her a party during midnight. Ms. Kennedy finds out, but decides not to say anything.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Her anime counterpart is openly hostile to the O'Sullivans and a Tsundere. She also loves driving Pat up the wall.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the original books, her sexuality was never brought up. Here, she's heterosexual and has a crush on Jimmy.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Janet has eyes for Jimmy, but her Tsunderish nature makes it hard to admit it. On a platonic level, this is her relationship with Pat and Isabel.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has deep blue eyes and is a cheeky girl who has trouble being honest about her feelings to Jimmy.
  • The Gadfly: She loves to bother Patricia when she's studying, and to her delight Patricia gets riled up very easily.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Janet often always has a wide smile on her face. And when she does, she's up to no good.
  • The Prankster: While all the girls play pranks from time to time, Janet is the best at it and even goes after the teachers.
  • Tsundere: She didn't like the twins at first, but gradually warmed up to them. However, she has trouble admitting it, even though they share a friend group with Catherine.
    Joan

Joan

Voiced by: Urara Takano (Japanese), Unknown (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Meritxell Ané (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Irene Scalzo (Italian), Natascha Rybakowski (German), Wafa Qusous (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

A girl from Saint Clare's first former class who's on the tubby side.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: She's esentially Alma Pudden, but without the unpleasant characteristics, and is actually a friend to the other girls.
  • Big Fun: She's fat and wears glasses, cementing her status as an "uncool" kid.
  • Expy: Of Alma Pudden from the book.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair into thin plaits behind her head.
  • Real Women Have Curves: She is definitely on the heavy side. Fortunately, unlike Alma Pudden from the original books, Joan avoids many of the negative stereotypes and is portrayed as a good student with a bit of a Sweet Tooth. She does hate P.E. and is pretty bad at lacross, but grows to at least be more competent at it after getting special training from Ms. Roberts.
    Rita Jones

Rita Jones

Voiced by: Youko Matsuka (Japanese), Danièle Hazan (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Ana María Camps (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Unknown (Italian), Unknown (German), Unknown (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

A girl from Saint Clare's first form who comes from money.
  • The Bully: Rita frequently picks on Allison because she's an easy target.
  • Rich Bitch: She's rich and horrible to Catherine, who's one of the poorest students at Saint Clare's. She even frames her for stealing and threatens Allison into keeping quiet.
  • Token Rich Student: Subverted as you have to be rich to attend Saint Clare's in the first place, but Rita is the richest of them all and has an attitude about it.

Fifth Formers

    As a whole
  • The Ace: All of them are this to some degree - Belinda is the lacrosse team Captain, Hillary is the Head Girl and Madeleine is a popular and beloved Queen Bee. It's why their first-form counterparts are Hero Worshippers to them.
  • Foil: To Belinda. Both Belinda and Madeleine are fifth formers that the younger girls admire. But while Belinda is always encouraging to Pat and cares for her, Madeleine couldn't give a second thought about Allison and finds her annoying.
    Belinda Towers

Belinda Towers

Voiced by: Omi Minami (Japanese), Marie-Madeleine Le Doze-Burguet (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Maria Moscardó (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Unknown (Italian), Bianca Krahl (German), Rania Fahad (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

The Captain of the lacrosse team and the girls' senior.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belinda.jpg
Belinda
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Patricia pulls the Twin Switch with Isabel and has Isabel do her cleaning, Belinda is amused and later offers Patricia a spot on the lacrosse team.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's seen as this by the other girls of the team because of her encouraging nature. They're heartbroken to see her leave the school.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: She is the captain of the school lacrosse team and loves lacrosse so much that she's always imploting other girls to join as well. She even asks Pat to join, despite Pat's bratty behaviour and the prank she pulled on her earlier.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She ties her dark brown hair into a ponytail while playing sports.
    Hillary Wentworth

Hillary Wentworth

Voiced by: Sumi Shimamoto (Japanese), Unknown (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Unknown (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Unknown (Italian), Unknown (German), Unknown (Arabic), Katherine Masilungan (Tagalog)

The Student Council President of Saint Clare's.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hilary_6.png
Hillary Wentworth
  • Academic Alpha Bitch: She views being on the top of the school as a challenge, hence her competitive nature towards everyone else. When she wins the swimming trophy, she holds up the trophy with glee in front of everyone's faces.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: An unusual example. In the first book, Hilary was described as a "cheeky-looking blonde". In the next books, she was always described as having dark hair. The anime gives her blonde hair.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Her book counterpart wasn't an Alpha Bitch and was more of a calm Nice Girl.
  • Composite Character: Of the book version of Hillary Wentworth, and Lucy O'Riell. Lucy went from Riches to Rags after her father died and wanted to be the Head Girl, having to leave the school afterwards. Thankfully Hillary, while suffering financial issues, was able to get a scholarship and was allowed to stay.
  • Daddy's Girl: She's very close to her father and idolizes him. She's closer than him than she is to her mother.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Even though she can be rude and prideful, she has a good reason for always wanting to be the best - her father runs a school for blind children, and Hillary wants to emulate him.
  • Riches to Rags: Hillary's father at one point encounters financial difficulties, but because Hillary is one the school's brightest students, Pat and Isabel convince Headmistress Leopold to give her a scholarship.
  • Student Council President: She's the student council president, and kind and helpful to her younger peers.
    Madeleine

Madeleine

Voiced by: Waka Kanda (Japanese), Marie-Madeleine Le Doze-Burguet (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Joel Mulachs (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Unknown (Italian), Unknown (German), Unknown (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

One of Saint Clare's most popular students.
  • Alpha Bitch: She is one of the most popular students of the school and loves bullying the first formers. She often makes passive-aggressive comments about their appearances, and gets her Girl Posse to join in on it. Despite how badly she treats them, many girls still vy for her approval because they want to be a part of her clique.
  • Expy: Madeleine is based on Angela Favorleigh from the book, who is also a snobby Alpha Bitch with many admirers, most prominently Allison. Both are also extreme narcissists and attention whores.
  • The Fashionista: She is implied to come from a wealthy family, hence her fancy clothes.
  • Jerkass: When Doris tries to take a slice of cake, Madeleine slaps her hand and insults her weight, even though she isn't fat.
  • Ojou Ringlets: She has volominous, coil-like ringlets tied to the back of her head, and is the queen bee of St. Clare's.

Teachers

    Miss Kennedy

Miss Kennedy

The teacher of the first former's.
  • Butt-Monkey: The class frequently subjects her to pranks because her reactions are priceless.
  • Cool Teacher: Even though her students constantly prank her, she does her best to help them and gives them extra tutoring when they need it.
  • Friend to All Children: When Colin climbs the school roof and is too scared to get down, Ms. Kennedy climbs up and rescues him. All the girls think she's cool after this.
  • Sadist Teacher: Inverted. She's a timid teacher and her students are monstrous.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is often the victim of pranks that frazzle her nerves, and is afraid of cats. At one point she's so frustrated by the pranks she leaves the class.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She is scared of cats, of all things.
    Mistress Leopold

Mistress Leopold

Voiced by: Akiko Takeguchi (Japanese), Danièle Hazan (French), Unknown (European Spanish), Roser Cavallé (Catalan Spanish), Unknown (European Portuguese), Lidia Costanzo (Italian), Hannelore Minkus (German), Qamar Al-Safadi (Arabic), Unknown (Tagalog)

The headmistress of Saint Clare's.
  • Cool Old Lady: To Pat and Isabel's surprise, she's more in tune with the interests of the youth than they thought, and they welcome her advice.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: She has greying hair tied into a bun, and also wears glasses.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She is willing to make exceptions and provide aid to students that deserve it, such as Hillary (who's father suffered financial hardships) and Catherine (who stole, but had good intentions in the end).

Other

    Jimmy
