The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers

The original team

Jason Lee Scott — Red Ranger / Omega Fire Ranger

Jason Lee Scott

The original leader of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. A martial arts instructor and former bully, Jason is forced to endure the chains of command for the sake of the team.

  • The Atoner: As revealed in the first issue of Go Go, he was a bully and a Jerk Jock when he was younger, and has since dedicated himself to being better.
  • Badass Teacher: Is a martial arts instructor, and takes his time with improving his student's fighting skills, while being an accomplished fighter himself.
  • Brought Down to Normal: His time as an Omega Ranger is ended when he forced to sever his connection to his morpher to force the Death Ranger out of his body.
  • The Chains of Commanding: His greatest fear is failing as the leader of the Rangers, but can't bring himself to say it outright to the team because he's worried about how it will affect them.
  • Cultured Badass: A Karate expert and leader of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, also quotes Ernest Hemingway.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As noted above, Jason reveals that as a child he would bully those smaller and weaker than him. This is a far cry from his current noble and upstanding self.
  • Determinator: Much like his TV show counterpart.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Has pushed the others to focus on their Ranger training, accusing them at times for not taking training seriously. While a nice guy outside of the training room, within he can become a strict instructor if he feels he needs to. He also tended to dislike when his teammates break protocol, at least early on.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Wields the Power Sword. & wields the Omega Katana as an Omega Ranger
  • Hot-Blooded: This was part of his characterization on the TV show, but it's much more prominent here. When he's first introduced in Go Go, one of his dislikes is “being told to 'calm down'".
  • It Never Gets Any Easier: Post-Time Skip, Tommy asks this the Red Omega Ranger if being a leader ever gets easier, unaware of who he's actually talking to. He admits that no, it doesn't.
  • The Leader: As is the case for most Red Rangers. He's also a Deconstruction of sorts, as Jason is still a fifteen-year-old boy with much to figure out. Especially in Go Go, where he can often come across as bossy or distant.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: He gets access to the Green Ranger's Dragon Shield, though under very different circumstances, in Issue #26.
  • Mission Control: Takes on this role when Zordon is temporarily missing.
  • Oblivious to Love: Go Go reveals that Trini has a crush on him, which he doesn't find out until Go Go #15.
  • Playing with Fire: His Omega Ranger Element is fire.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With Trini in the main series comics.
  • Serious Business: No time for sports or girls, only training and teaching. This is to the point that he gets annoyed at his teammates not taking Ranger training seriously.
  • Worthy Opponent: Both to Tommy and Drakkon, who respect his fighting ability, leadership, and strategic skills.

Zack Taylor — Black Ranger / Omega Air Ranger

Zack Taylor

Click here to see his morphed form

A charming and popular guy at school, while a Ranger, Zack actually has issues regarding Jason's leadership and isn't afraid to voice them.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Zack is much more fleshed out here. While he's still high-energy and friendly, he clashes with the rest of the team and often wants the team to use their powers to help improve the world outside of stopping monsters. In other words, the sort of person who would want to attend a Peace Conference.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: He's much more distrusting of Tommy when he first joins the team and openly confronts Jason's leadership choices more than once.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Is very perceptive of people's actions and words, to the point that he is the first to suspect something off about Matt.
  • Blow You Away: When he becomes the black Omega Ranger, his element is Air.
  • Book Dumb: Smart enough to be a Power Ranger. Not smart enough to do well at school.
  • Cultured Badass: Is Jason's second-in-command. The cultured part is downplayed, but he does quote Theodore Roosevelt and likes EDM and Ai Wei Wei (a chinese artist and activist).
  • Dance Battler: True to the character, there are panels exhibit Zack teaching Hip-Hop-Kido.
  • Extracurricular Enthusiast: Aside from Ranger duties, classes, and his part-time job at the Juice Bar, he's very active in the Angel Grove community. In his words in Go Go #1, “Everyone's my best friend”.
  • The Lancer: Passionate and personable, compared to the more reserved and action-oriented Jason. They're still True Companions, but they disagree more often.
  • Nice Guy: Ultimately this, his Jerkass tendencies are less frequent then his tendency to befriend everyone and altruism shown to others.
  • Pungeon Master: Many of his quips during the Monster of the Week battles, which more than often illicit groans and sighs from the rest of the team.
  • Sinister Scythe: Wields a chained Kusarigama as the black Omega Ranger.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Due to traveling to another dimension, he temporarily gets Kimberly's powers, including her pink uniform and bow. He pulls it off.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With Trini in the Pink miniseries.
  • The Un Chosen One: An interesting variation. He was Rita Repulsa's first choice to be the Green Ranger. He refused, and so she kidnapped and bewitched Tommy into the role. Zack is sometimes shown as resenting Tommy after seeing how powerful he could have been.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Early on, after the Rangers first battle and win against Goldar, Zack enthusiastically proclaims their victory and is filled with overconfidence. This contrasts with Jason silently contemplating how the war had just begun.
  • What You Are in the Dark: When the Empyreals are destroying a planet, Zack sees the planet's despotic king trying to reach the evacuation ship. Zack closes the door anyway, but it's hinted Drakkon noticed.

    Billy Cranston — Blue Ranger

Billy Cranston

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_oqz2xykm191sp5jt1o3_1280.jpg
Click here to see his morphed form

The youngest member of the team, and the smartest. Billy is a child prodigy and is extremely intelligent.

  • Baby Of The Bunch: As the first chapter of Go Go reveals, he is the youngest member of the team, this adds context to the rest of them being protective of him in both the comics and the show.
  • Badass Bookworm: When he first becomes a Ranger, he spends much of his time researching The Hero's Journey to better himself in the field.
  • Beneath the Mask: Despite his intelligence and skillset giving the Rangers numerous advantages, Billy harbors various insecurities as hero, and more than once considered resigning as a Ranger so that someone better can take his place.
  • Crazy-Prepared: After Zordon's tube is shattered, Billy reveals that he created a system to transfer Zordon's essence into a humanoid armor in the event of such an attack, inspired by news of how Zordon was killed in Drakkon's world.
  • Dressed in Layers: A spotlight issue reveals he sometimes stays morphed underneath his civilian clothes, hiding it with a hologram due to his lack of confidence in himself.
  • Foreshadowing: When searching for a new Command Centre, Billy observes that he enjoys the science and seeing new worlds more than just being a Ranger, acknowledging how he will accept a "demotion" from active Ranger to technical support in Power Rangers Zeo.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Like his TV show counterpart, he is a budding inventor creating numerous weapons and items to improve the Rangers arsenal, and as a civilian he is scouted for a scholarship due to his intelligence.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Trini. They're best friends even before they become Rangers, bonding over being the quieter, nerdy members of the group.
  • The Smart Guy:
    • Wouldn't be Billy otherwise. In addition to his technological prowess and tendency to speak in Techno Babble, he's also very clever, finding creative ways to use the monsters' abilities to his advantage.
    • He manages to figure out a way to temporarily repower the Dragonzord coin.
  • Teen Genius: Of course. Also deconstructed, as Billy feels less confident as a fighter because of his lack of athletic prowess, and often feels out of place with the others.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Doesn't want to disappoint his father.

Trini Kwan — Yellow Ranger / Omega Earth Ranger

Trini Kwan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_oqz2xykm191sp5jt1o1_1280.jpg
Click here to see her morphed form

A kind girl and very capable fighter, Trini is also smart enough to actually understand what Billy is saying.

  • Action Girl: Grew up around military bases, has a more physical fighting style compared to Kimberly, crafty enough to create her own power armor, and his shown dueling monsters by herself.
  • Adaptation Expansion: While her TV counterpart was seen as kind of a Flat Character, this Trini has much more personality and is much more of a Deadpan Snarker.
  • The Big Girl: The most grounded member of the team, but also a powerful fighter and quick thinker.
    • Is shown defeating a giant-sized Goldar. By herself. Without a zord.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Go Go reveals that she has a crush on Jason, which gets revealed to him in Go Go #15 when a power swap with Jason allows them to read each other's mind.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her Omega Ranger element is Earth.
  • Enemy Mine: During her time as an Omega Ranger, Trini at one point teamed up with Ecliptor to rescue Jason, Zack and Astronema from the SPD on Onyx.
  • The Heart: She's the one who the most of the team can talk to about their problems and who can help them through their personal problems. She's smart enough to talk to Billy, understands leadership enough to talk to Jason and is Kim's best friend. She's also the person Kiya is most comfortable talking to on the Omega Rangers. When the Mighty Morphin team find out about the whole Omega Ranger thing, the team direct their anger at Trini more than Zack or Jason, probably because she's The Heart.
  • The Medic: Her father is a doctor, and she uses some of what he taught her to help Tommy early on.
  • Military Brat: She grew up on military bases because of her father and moved around a bunch. Because of this, she's hesitant to form or expect long-lasting friendships.
  • Oblivious to Love: In a reversal of Trini and Jason's earlier days as Power Rangers, Jason's feelings for Trini seem to rekindle when they're Omega Rangers. He tries to talk to her about it and mentions how things have changed since then, trying to imply that maybe they'd work as a couple now... but she's too busy worrying about the Empyreals and Drakkon to notice.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Billy. They usually pair together for non-Ranger activities, and he's even her date to their homecoming dance.
  • Race Lift: This version of Trini, in addition to still being Chinese, is also Korean on her mother's side.
  • Relationship Upgrade:
    • In the earlier days of the team, Trini and Jason had a short-lived relationship. However, she calls it off when she gets worried that it will affect their effectiveness as Rangers.
    • In the Pink miniseries, which takes place in the TV show's continuity, she's in a relationship with Zack.
  • Wrench Wench: She's studied the inner workings of the Dragonzord, and later, the Black Dragon armor, and she's the first one to realize that the two are connected. She even reprogrammed the Black Dragon to sync to her and wipes the floor with Rita's minions, even forcing Rita herself to fall back!

Kimberly Ann Hart — Pink Ranger

Kimberly "Kim" Ann Hart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_oqz2xykm191sp5jt1o4_1280.jpg
Click here to see her morphed form

One of the more popular students at Angel Grove, Kimberly is the most socially well-adjusted of the group.

  • Action Girl: Of course. While does not specialize in close quarters like Trini, she is a veteran fighter and the team's sniper.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Was initially this early on, as she had just moved to Angel Grove and after a bad day, cost Zack his part-time job. She had trouble making friends, with Trini and Zack refusing to be friends with her. She eventually grew out of it, at the same time as Matt growing into it.
  • Badass Biker: Her solo series shows that sometime after leaving the team she has acquired and uses a motorcycle.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Frustrated at her parents' inability to be adults, Kim eventually yells at her mom over both of them trying to pit Kim against each other during their divorce.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She's very hard with Rocky, Aisha and Adam, partially because she still misses Trini, Jason and Zack, but also because she wants to prepare them. This is in contrast to Tommy who's too lenient after the Omega Rangers appear and he starts to slack.
  • Friendly Sniper: Kim made some impressive shots in the show but in the ongoing and Pink it's been upgraded to near-superhuman aim.
  • Girly Bruiser: Much like her TV counterpart.
  • The Lancer: During the Necessary Evil arc, she has become the second in command to Tommy with Jason and Zack gone. Where as Tommy is hard on himself to live up to Jason's lead, she's hard on the newbies who she feels need to live up to their predecessors.
  • The Leader: Of the All-New Power Rangers Team in the Pink minisieries.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Kimberly trying to push the untested Metallic Armor causes a pocket dimension to break and pull in Trakeena, Ransik, Dai Shi, Sledge and Void Queen.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Angel Grove's most famous resident gymnast, as always.
  • Spoiled Sweet: The Hart family is fairly well-off, but she's kind and level-headed. When she first came to Angel Grove, the others believed her to be a Rich Bitch after she accidentally caused Zack to be fired from his job at a restaurant, but she's apologetic and soon becomes a part of the group.
  • Stepford Smiler: Her recent move to Angel Grove, her parents' divorce, and her failed first relationship with Matt all take a toll on her.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: Makes good use of her Power Bow, in a world with blasters and giant mecha. Her archery skills are noted by alien warriors to be especially deadly.
  • The Tease: Downplayed, but still notable compared to her TV show counterpart. Kim has a tendency to flirt with her friends to get them to like her, and her early relationship with Matt shows her interested in his makeout spot. Later she is shown to attempt to even kiss Skull.
  • Valley Girl: Downplayed in comparison to her TV show counterpart, but still present. As expected from an attractive girl in high school.

Later additions

Tommy Oliver — Green Ranger / White Ranger

Tommy Oliver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/boomtommy.jpg
Click here to see his morphed form(s)

The Sixth Ranger, who was brainwashed by Rita Repulsa into fighting the Rangers. He turned on her and has since joined the team, eventually becoming the Earth team's leader.

  • The Chains of Commanding: He experiences this once he takes over for Jason as Leader, feeling like an inferior successor whenever things don't go perfectly and is very hard on himself.
  • Cool Big Bro: Though they're the same age, he acts this to Billy after the events of the Coinless arc, taking him to work out. It becomes clear that they became closer after being trapped in an alternate universe together, which makes it even harder on Billy when Drakkon murders Tommy.
    • Try to be this to Rocky, Aisha and Adam, since he knows very well how it is feel unwanted and the newbie in the team.
  • Character Death: In Issue #25. More specifically, he's stabbed In the Back with Saba's body to kick off the Shattered Grid event and is revived near the end of that arc.
  • Character Development: At the beginning of the series he's very much a lone wolf and believes he needs to deal with his problems by himself. He eventually realizes that his friends are his strength and he should rely on them when he needs help. He tries to impart this wisdom to Drakkon in the finale of Shattered Grid with no success.
  • The Determinator: Wouldn't be Tommy Oliver otherwise.
  • Disappeared Dad: His TV counterpart was Happily Adopted by the Olivers. That's presumably still the case here, but as far as we've seen, his mother is a single parent.
  • Dual Wielding: Uses both the Dragon Dagger and Saba against Lord Drakkon.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: In Issue #1, he arrives in the cafeteria just in time for the bell to ring, prompting the other five Rangers to head back to class. It's completely justified based on the school schedule, but through the lens of his own anxieties and self-doubts, manifesting as Rita Repulsa, it feels like the more traditional use of this trope, feeling isolated and unwanted.
  • Future Me Scares Me: His reaction to Lord Drakkon. Tommy isn't concerned with becoming like Drakkon, but he's still frightening nonetheless.
  • Inconsistent Coloring: His hair goes back and forth on being colored either black or brown.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Tommy tries to keep to himself, but eventually he comes to appreciate being part of the team.
  • Plagued by Nightmares: A side effect of Rita's mind control is that Tommy's constantly haunted by nightmares of Rita coming back into his life, and early on, would have hallucinations of the witch taunting him.
  • Power Incontinence: The White Ranger powers are so great that Tommy initially has trouble adapting to the surge of energy when he’s not able to channel that energy in a fight; he mentions to Zordon at one point that he can’t really sleep any more.
  • Race Lift: Of sorts. In the original show, Tommy was Native American, but played by a Caucasian actor. In the comic, Tommy is typically drawn as being darker-skinned than Jason, Billy, or Kimberly.
  • Really Moves Around: Before coming to Angel Grove, he'd lived in Boston, London, and Philadelphia.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: Both by his teammates, especially Jason and Zack, and by himself as he struggles to forgive himself for his actions under Rita's spell.
  • Sixth Ranger: Obviously
  • The Sleepless: After he becomes the White Ranger he finds that he does not need to sleep and has boundless energy even when unmorphed.
  • The Un Chosen One: As it turns out, Saba wasn't too convinced he was a good choice for the White Ranger power. Tommy manages to get it anyway.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Tommy’s challenge to become the White Ranger involved facing one of these. When he reached a chamber containing Saba, Lord Zedd appeared in the chamber, acting as though Tommy was there on his behalf to claim the white power. When Tommy refused to back down and continued trying to fight Zedd on his own, Zedd was confirmed to be a projection created by Saba; the final test of the true bearer of the White Light is that the bearer would be willing to sacrifice himself for the good of others with no thought of reward.

Rocky DeSantos - Red Ranger II

Rocky DeSantos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/09a3bec2_55c2_4261_a2a3_6665843de606.jpeg

Jason's replacement as the Red Ranger, who joins the team after Jason leaves to join a "peace conference".

  • Took a Level in Badass: When the Machine Empire attacks Earth when only Rocky and Matt are present on Earth, Matt transfers the Dragon Shield and Dagger to Rocky when he's injured in the initial assault.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Rocky expresses doubt about his abilities as a Ranger compared to Jason or Tommy, Matt assures him that he shouldn't judge himself compared to them, as Rocky's a strong "rock" who can take everything their enemies have to throw at him.

Adam Park — Black Ranger II

Adam Park

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9333c7e4_c2dc_4b76_be88_6a9de7608ee3.jpeg

Zack's replacement as the Black Ranger, who joins the team after Zack leaves to join a "peace conference".

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In Issue #3 of Mighty Morphin, Adam is temporarily brainwashed mid-fight to see the other Rangers as monsters.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After the debut of the new Green Ranger, Adam is the one to point out that Drakkon is the most likely candidate, although this is incorrect.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He dislikes bugs (ironically, just like the previous Black Ranger); Dayne, naturally, weaponizes this against him.

Aisha Campbell — Yellow Ranger II

Aisha Campbell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e8dc9a93_fc85_495e_8dd4_8203759479a0.jpeg

Trini's replacement as the Yellow Ranger, who joins the team after Trini leaves to join a "peace conference".

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: It was alluded to very lightly in the anniversary special but more explored starting with issue #40. Aisha is frustrated with not clicking right away with the team, feeling like a Sucksessor in the eyes of Kimberly and the other veteran rangers.
  • Hyper-Awareness: She’s always alert when something seems off.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Aisha confronts Billy after overhearing a conversation between Billy and the new Green Ranger, which led to her realising that he’s aware of the Green Ranger’s identity and helped Promethea secure the Green Power Coin from the Command Center.

Other Rangers

    Kiya — Omega Water Ranger

Kiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e4e58873_0046_4296_848b_f532d328027d.jpeg
Click here to see her morphed form

An alien empowered by the Morphin' Grid. She joins Zack, Trini, and Jason when they become the Omega Rangers when they leave Angel Grove and go to a planet called Safe Haven.

  • Accidental Murder: When she received her powers, the discharge vaporized her entire family.
  • Big Bad: After killing the Blue Emissary, she becomes the main threat of the "Necessary Evil" arc.
  • Berserk Button: Lord Drakkon, and unfortunately, this means Tommy Oliver as well.
  • Brought Down to Badass: The Solarix depowered her entire army including her, but she's still a tough Ranger to fight, as Trini learned.
  • Driven to Madness: She became obsessed with the idea of Tommy turning into Lord Drakkon and was determined to do everything possible to get rid of him and the Morphin Grid.
  • Foil:
    • To Rocky, Adam, and particularly Aisha. Like them, she's the newcomer to the team after they parted ways, however while the three new Mighty Morphin' Rangers are having a hard time bonding and fitting into the team dynamic making their teamwork sloppy in comparison to how the original team worked together, Kiya seems to be an Instant Expert who becomes fast friends with Jason, Trini, and Zack, making their missions smoother and more successful. In addition, while Rocky and co eventually work with their seniors as full-fledged members, Kiya splits off from her team in order to follow her own agendas.
    • Kiya also serves as one to Matt, with both of them being Canon Foreigner characters who also become Rangers. Matt's introduced as a friend to the original five before they became Rangers, while Kiya's introduced being friends with Jason, Trini and Zach after they all became Omega Rangers. Matt was closest to Kim, Kiya was close to Trini. Matt grew increasingly frustrated with his friends over something he understandably had a right to be upset about when he suffered through multiple traumatic experiences connected to them being Power Rangers and they couldn't be honest with him about it. Matt eventually patched things up with Kim and the others and went on to become the new Green Ranger. Kiya suffered a traumatic experience due to something Ranger related and grew frustrated over something she thought was understandable and cut ties with her friends because they stood in her way, destroying their friendship and stripping her of her role as Omega Blue.
  • Kill and Replace: Plans to replace the Rangers as the protectors of the galaxy with her group "The Anointed" by any means necessary.
  • Making a Splash: Her element is water.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: She genuinely thinks she's doing the right thing trying to destroy the Morphin' Grid, and assumes the Rangers are misguided and naïve for allowing Tommy Oliver to keep living. This is despite the evidence clearly dictating Lord Drakkon was a fluke among all the other Tommys in the Multiverse and that the main Tommy had moved well past the point where his counterpart became evil. It also doesn't help matters that she immediately jumped to murder when the Emissary disagreed with her, nor does Kiya ever consider she could work towards ensuring all chances of Tommy turning evil are squashed by helping him instead of killing him.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Her small stature is explicitly why the semi-gigantic Garrison Vox underestimates her. All is takes is one punch from her to take him down.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: Her weapon fittingly enough is a trident.
  • Sanity Slippage: The moment Kiya laid eyes on Tommy is the moment she gradually lost herself to paranoia.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: At the end of her arc, both she and Garrison are sealed away.
  • Self-Made Orphan: The burst of energy when she received her powers vaporized everything around her, killing her parents and little brother.
  • Sixth Ranger: Well fourth, but no matter at what point she joined the other three, they were already experienced as a team before her.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: The first character in Power Rangers to actually fit this trope. After seeing Tommy, she decides to free the criminals she captured, backstab the Emissary and destroy the Morphin Grid.
  • Stepford Smiler: She seems to be overly cheery with her new friends considering her trauma but later gets a little more vulnerable when revealing it to Trini.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Killing the Blue Emissary allows the Empyreals to re-enter reality and go on their rampage, which also allows Dark Spectre to gain a foothold as well.
  • Walking Spoiler: There's not much to say about Kiya that isn't a spoiler.
  • Water Is Blue: The Omega Rangers are all element themed. Her element is water while her suit is a light shade of blue much like the other female blue rangers.
  • Worf Effect: She’s on the delivering end of this to Vox, whom she beats after he’s established as a dangerous brute who’s single handedly giving trouble to an entire village.

Matthew Cook — Green Ranger II

Matthew Cook

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/go_go_power_rangers1.jpeg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd87c4d6_b447_4a6d_9afa_6c042a4a6c36.jpeg

Kim's first boyfriend at Angel Grove and how she ended up first meeting Jason, Zack, Billy and Trini. After the five become Power Rangers, he grew distant from them after their constant lies to keep their secret identities.

Later, a mysterious second Green Ranger appears to aid the Earth Ranger team during the Unlimited Power era. Against the wishes of Prometheus, he later reveals himself to the world as Matthew Cook.

  • Amicable Exes: What he and Kimberly eventually become.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Was originally the fifth member of the friend group before Kimberly moved to Angel Grove, but was passed over for Ranger status. This effectively had Kimberly replace him in his own friend group as they bonded over being Rangers while he was left out of the loop.
  • Brainwashed: After being captured by Mistress Vile, Matt returns to Earth brainwashed to act as her ally.
  • Canon Foreigner: Never appeared in the original show.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His outfit as the Green Ranger is a few shades darker than it was for Tommy, but he's just as good as the others.
  • Death by Origin Story: For the Ranger Slayer in Drakkon's world. Seeing him die is what makes Kim recklessly try to kill Drakkon alone, ultimately leading to her brainwashing.
  • Easily Forgiven: By the new trio, at least. By Kimberly... not so much.
  • First Love: He's presented as this for Kimberly. Their relationship is genuinely heartwarming, but is Doomed by Canon given she's interested in Tommy in the very first issue of Mighty Morphin.
  • Freudian Excuse: His decision to initially cut ties from the main five does seem understandable considering Matt was essentially an unintended casualty to all of them becoming Power Rangers, since he was deliberately targeted and tortured by Rita Repulsa to learn their secrets. After being traumatized and finding himself getting stuck in increasingly dangerous situations, plus all these superpowered beings supposedly knowing who he is, Matt's anger at Kim and the others stems from the fact they can't even be honest with him about why all these things happened when at this point he does have a right to know.
  • The Ghost: While he appears in the Go Go series, he's only mentioned in the main comic, simply implying something bad happened to him. It's later revealed that he found out about his friends and girlfriend being the Power Rangers but when he confronted them about it, they were unable to answer him. Feeling betrayed, Matt vowed to never speak to any of them again, unaware that they couldn't confirm his accusations due to one of Zordon's rules (never reveal your secret identity).
  • The Heart: It seems he was this before Trini took the role as he was friends with every member of the team even when Zach and Trini were not too crazy about Kimberly due to a Noodle Incident. It's implied that he's the only reason Kimberly became as good as friends with the group as she is.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Rita returns as Mistress Vile, Matt stays behind to buy time for the other Rangers to rescue Zedd, Goldar and Baboo and escape in Serpentera, explicitly describing himself as an "extra" compared to the other Rangers.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He grows increasingly frustrated with the core five for their constant, obvious lies. This is especially the case with Kim, who made a habit of ditching him for Ranger duties at very bad times and never actually gave adequate reasons to him when apologising. Understandably, he grows tired of it, and after they refuse to admit that they're Power Rangers when he directly tells them he knows, he decides enough is enough. Publicly revealing his own identity to reassure the people of Angel Grove's safety would also be understandable knowing he's the only Ranger they currently have available.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: He has to keep up the masquerade as the new Green Ranger, even though it ruins his life, both in school and out.
  • Nice Guy: He's friendly and seems to be close with all of the Rangers on a very personal level.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While destroying Zedd's Green Chaos Crystal to stop his Dark Rangers seemed like a good idea at the time, he ends up causing the events in Mighty Morphin because he empowered Lord Zedd by exposing him to the released Chaos Energy.
  • Remember the New Guy?: He wasn't in Mighty Morphin' and was only mentioned after appearing in Go Go. He's introduced as a sixth member of the gang before they all became Rangers and issue #51 reveals he was even friends with Rocky when they were younger.
  • Secret Identity: He kept his identity a secret from the public and the other Rangers initially. However, when Angel Grove is trapped under an energy dome by Zedd and he's the only Ranger inside, when addressing its citizens and telling them to remain calm, he reveals his identity.
  • Sixth Ranger: He's actually the seventh team member, but he fulfils the same role during the Unlimited Power era.
  • Tron Lines: Another difference his outfit has from Tommy's is glowing green lines everywhere.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Being the Green Ranger, he's more vulnerable to attacks empowered by Green Chaos Energy than the average Ranger.

    Omega Water Ranger II

Yale / Omega Water Ranger II

A large feline alien initially sealed away by Kya, then released by her. Accompanying the Omega Rangers as a sort of pet / ally to Drakkon, Yale is made the next Water Ranger by the Blue Guardian.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Yale's family was enslaved. Kya only managed to escape because his small size meant he fell out of the bag his siblings were kept it, but before he could do anything, he was separated from them, and has never seen them again.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: The first non-humanoid Ranger ever seen.
  • Panthera Awesome: Yale is a giant tiger like alien.
  • Redeeming Replacement: For Kya, as the Omega Water Ranger. The others were holding off on choosing a replacement at all after what went down with Kya, but the Blue Guardian was desperate.
