Main Characters

    Karuna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karuna_face01.png

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

The protagonist of the story and the legendary Hero chosen to slay Darkloft. Originally, she was best friends with Aurelie, but before she could confess her true feelings, the latter became the evil Darkloft. Though on the surface she is composed, stoic, and the ideal leader, she hides her doubts about her destiny- because Darkloft is Aurelie, she is very hesitant to carry out her mission.

  • The Chosen One: Karuna is the chosen hero of the isles, who is tasked with defeating Darkloft to prevent the latter from destroying the world with monsters.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Karuna, the Chosen One, uses a sword, while her companions, Chisa, Merle, and Lynette, use axes, knives, and spears, respectively.
  • The Heroine: Karuna is the chosen hero to defeat Darkloft and the main playable character after the prologue.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Karuna is the hero chosen to slay Darkloft, but since the evil overlord is possessing Aurelie, this means she may have to kill Aurelie as well. While Karuna wants to find a solution to kill Darkloft while saving Aurelie, many citizens are not sympathetic to this idea, since they see Darkloft and Aurelie as one and the same. This is eventually subverted when Karuna gains all three artifacts, allowing her to talk to Gresham the Wanderer and learn of a way to defeat Darkloft without killing Aurelie. If she didn't become the chosen one, she wouldn't have gained this knowledge and there's no guarantee that another hero would save Aurelie.
  • Red Is Heroic: Karuna, the Chosen One, wears red armor.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ironically, despite wearing red, she's the Blue Oni to Lynette's Red Oni. She is calm, rational, generally maintains composure, and is a good leader who believes that she can save Aurelie, whereas Lynette is rash, bombastic, violent, and wants Aurelie dead.

    Chisa Tsukada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chisa_face01.png

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A student of the School of the Unwavering Blade who has decided to travel with Karuna and prove herself. Born a member of the respected Tsukada family, she traveled to the Isles of Luxaren on the request of her grandfather. Though very unsure of herself, she hopes that the journey will make her grow into a confident warrior.

  • Combat Medic: Chisa is a slow, physically strong fighter and has a moveset that focuses on recovery magic.
  • The Cutie: She is very shy, innocent, and cute. This is a major part of why Merel took such a liking to her, and she repeatedly calls Chisa cute.
  • Interspecies Romance: She starts a relationship with Merel, a Naga.
  • Shrinking Violet: Very shy and prefers to let others take charge. Though she wants to be confident and independent, her abuse by her sister Hiruko crippled her self-esteem.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Downplayed. Her relationship with Merel is not looked upon kindly since she is a human and Merel a Naga, but they don't face active opposition since they're too busy traveling the world and fighting Darkloft's forces to worry about discrimination.

    Merel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merel_face01.png

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

A Naga who becomes the guide for Karuna and Chisa, later joining them on their quest. She is openly attracted to Chisa. Unlike the other Naga, she does not hate humans, and is willing to open up to human allies; as a result, she is treated as an outcast by her fellow Naga, with only her sister as the exception.

  • Interspecies Romance: She starts a relationship with Chisa, a human.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: She is apparently the only Naga, or the only one seen, who does not hate humans. This makes her somewhat of an outcast among the Naga. Justified as she knows that Heather was telling the truth when she said that Naga were descended from humans, as she helped Heather discover this, but the other Naga took offense and exiled Heather in front of her.
  • Snake People: She is a Naga.
  • Squishy Wizard: Merel has high Ether growth, but low HP and DEF.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Downplayed. Her relationship with Chisa is not looked upon kindly since she is a Naga and Chisa a human, but they don't face active opposition since they're too busy traveling the world and fighting Darkloft's forces to worry about discrimination.

    Lynette
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lynettel_face01.png

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

A holy warrior who seeks revenge on Darkloft and her minions for the massacre of her crew. Unlike Karuna, she despises Aurelie and wants her dead, refusing to believe she is anything but a monster. Her smug, antagonistic attitude and willingness to resort to violence bring her into conflict with the others.

  • Anti-Hero: Despite being a holy knight, she is very violent and brash and can be Holier Than Thou, and wants to kill Aurelie while the others want to save her.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Lynette refuses to go along with Karuna's plan to free Aurelie from the Infernal Armor, claiming that Aurelie must be irredeemably evil for falling for the armor’s temptation in the first place. Even after Karuna succeeds in returning Aurelie to normal, Lynette tries to kill the entire party because she's convinced Aurelie is still Darkloft.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When the others first meet her, she is harshly interrogating a Strange Creature she captured, referring to his kind as scum. This sets her up as a Knight Templar and the Anti-Hero of the group.
  • Freudian Excuse: Lynette was born without any affinity for the light element despite being descended from Paladin Estes, causing her parents to be emotionally abusive towards her. As a result, she acts incredibly arrogant about her lineage to compensate for her feelings of inferiority and is hostile towards Karuna, who is both chosen as the new hero and has the light element.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Played With. Despite appearing on the title screen as one of the protagonists, Lynette only joins for three dungeons (one of which is a Marathon Level) and two towns before leaving because she disagrees with the idea of saving Aurelie. She then temporarily joins one last time in the road to Hell's Gate when the party members are separated, but leaves in order to hold off an army of demons for the other party members.
  • Holier Than Thou: She really believes in her religious teachings, but often expresses contempt towards her allies since they are more willing to show compassion for Aurelie than she is.
  • Hypocrite: Lynette is prideful about being descended from one of the heroes who defeated Darkloft, yet she's against Karuna's plan to free Aurelie from Darkloft despite the Seer of Luxaren endorsing that plan. The Seer of Luxaren is one of the major figures of her religion and is part of the original team who defeated Darkloft.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When King Hotenshin basically forces the heroines to participate in his Love Festival in exchange for the Gem of Hope, Lynette loses her mind and screams at him that they have no time for this- they need the gem now. While she could have put it more politely, she is right that Darkloft and her forces have been destroying towns and could strike at any second, so it really is urgent that they get the gem. Even Karuna concedes her point.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lynette is generally abrasive towards the party because she's jealous that Aurelie gets to be The Chosen One and she doesn't. However, she still shows sympathetic moments, such as when she insists on not telling the people of Springsmouth about the nearby fishman monsters being wiped out, since she fears they could let their guards down. After she realizes her error in trying to kill Aurelie, she becomes slightly nicer to the party and goes as far as to hold off an army of demons for them.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ironically, despite having blue hair, she's the Red Oni to Karuna's Blue Oni. She is rash, bombastic, violent, and wants Aurelie dead, while Karuna is calm, rational, generally maintains composure, and is a good leader who believes that she can save Aurelie.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Downplayed, but of all the heroines, she is the most violent and has a bad case of Black-and-White Insanity, refusing to see Aurelie and her Co-Dragons as anything but evil beings that must be vanquished. This leads her to have a Holier Than Thou attitude and clash with the others, to the point of leaving the party when they refuse to kill Aurelie and trying to kill them later on.

    Aurelie/Overlord Darkloft (spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aurelie_face01.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ol_overlord_unmasked_2.png

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Once a normal but shy village girl who trained under Karuna, she became frustrated with her continued failures to be stronger and more confident. After rescuing a village boy from Castle Darkloft alongside Karuna, she came upon a mysterious suit of armor, and a strange voice that promised her power. In desperation, she donned, and was corrupted by, the Infernal Armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Now she desires to conquer Luxaren and destroy all who stand in her way- including Karuna.

Or so it seems, until the reveal that she is being possessed by the real Darkloft, who resided in the armor. In truth a prisoner of her own body, forced to watch as it slaughters innocents, she desires to escape the control of the overlord and reunite with her love.

  • The Atoner: Aurelie wants to turn herself in to prison for falling for Darkloft's temptation, though Karuna convinces her that's unnecessary.
  • Black Knight: As Darkloft, she wears black armor and is The Dreaded among the people of Luxaren. Unlike most examples, her being female and her identity as Aurelie is no secret, but openly presented. The real twist is that she isn't Darkloft, but merely being possessed by her.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: After Aurelie is freed from Darkloft's control and joins the party, she retains her infernal elemental skills because her family is attuned to that element.
  • Deal with the Devil: Aurelie agrees to don Darkloft's armor so she doesn't have to feel weak anymore. She soon regrets this decision when Darkloft takes over her body.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: She is initially portrayed as Darkloft herself and a girl who turned to evil; only later is it revealed that Darkloft is a separate character who possessed her. On a gameplay level, the battle where Karuna must free her from the possession is built up as the final boss, but afterwards Darkloft escapes and the heroines must chase her through one last dungeon.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Aurelie resists Darkloft's second attempt at possessing her and participates in the Final Boss battle.
  • Evil Overlooker: On the title screen, she as Darkloft looms on the center, overlooking the heroines with her red eyes.
  • Fighting from the Inside: After Karuna confesses to Aurelie in the Temple of the Ageless, the latter tries to resist Darkloft's control.
  • Glass Cannon: Downplayed and justified. In addition to using HP cost skills, she cannot equip heavy armor, due to the trauma of being possessed by the armor of Ellicide. However, she has high base DEF growth to compensate for using light armor.
  • More than Mind Control: Subverted. It is heavily indicated that she became corrupted by the infernal armor because she hated being weak, and a strange voice offered to help her gain strength- her desire is what turned her into Darkloft. What really happened was a case of Demonic Possession by the voice, the real Darkloft.
  • Redemption Demotion: After joining the party, Aurelie doesn't keep the stats and the more advanced skills she had while under Darkloft's possession.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: While possesses by Darkloft, her eyes glow red.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: An example revealed early on- Aurelie, the shy village girl and pupil of Karuna, disappears one day on a mission to Castle Darkloft. Two years later, an Evil Overlord calling herself Darkloft has appeared and is terrorizing the world of Luxaren. It doesn't take long for the characters to realize they are the same person. Except it's actually subverted- everyone, including Karuna, thinks this is the case, but Darkloft is actually a separate individual from Aurelie who possessed the latter.
  • Walking Spoiler: The Reveal is that she is not Darkloft but being possessed by her, and she joins your party.

    Spoiler Character

The real Overlord Darkloft

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darkloft_face01.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darkloft_face03.png

The dark lord herself and the antagonist of the game, who leads the armies of monsters terrorizing the human realm of Luxaren. Once a human warlord who was vanquished, her spirit took control of the Infernal Armor of Ellicide, eventually possessing Aurelie, making her the true driving force behind her actions. She detests her fellow humans, who she sees as weak, and wants to crush humanity under her boot. Having made a deal with the Demon Lords of Aothuth, she desires to help them invade Luxaren in exchange for power and immortality.

  • Animated Armor: Once Karuna frees Aurelie from the Infernal armor, Darkloft uses the power she gathered to become one with the armor and starts walking around with it.
  • Big Bad: She is the one actually in control of Aurelie and the one trying to Take Over the World alongside the demons.
  • Black Knight: She is clad in black armor and is The Dreaded among the people of Luxaren.
  • Dark Action Girl: She is the Big Bad and a brutal warlord; while she prefers to let her minions do the fighting, she is more than capable of fighting herself, as seen when she casually slaughters a team of knights sent to apprehend her, and she is the Final Boss.
  • Dark Is Evil: Her name is Darkloft, she has demonic powers of darkness, and she is the Big Bad and The Sociopath who wants to Take Over the World and Kill All Humans.
  • Deal with the Devil: Darkloft formed a pact with demons to gain dark powers and immortality, on the condition that she releases them from Aothuth. Given that she believes the weak deserve to be dominated by the strong, she doesn't care about the consequences of that condition.
  • Demon of Human Origin: She was a human warlord who made a deal with the Demon Lords for power, and got turned into a demonic spirit.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The first battle against her where Karuna must free Aurelie from her possession is built up as the final boss, but afterwards Darkloft escapes and the heroines must chase her through one last dungeon.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: She serves the Demon Lords and is loyal to them, but since they are sealed away and never seen, she serves as the main threat and the one leading the armies of monsters.
  • The Dreaded: Her sheer power, force of arms, and senseless slaughter of all who oppose her have struck fear into all of Luxaren. Many of the NPCs live in terror of her and her monster armies, to the point that, even though Karuna wants to save Aurelie from her Demonic Possession, most people consider outright killing her the better choice.
  • Evil Overlord: As her title states. Unlike most examples of this trope, she slaughters, rather than enslaves, the populace, and has monsters occupy any area under her control.
  • The Faceless: Her face is obscured by her helmet, which only shows shadow.
  • Final Boss: The last enemy of the heroines who must be stopped before she opens the gate to Aothuth and unleashes Hell on Earth.
  • Final Boss Preview: An early flashback has her annihilate Karuna and her crew of knights when they first meet.
  • Immortality Immorality: She gained immortality by making a deal with the Demon Lords to kill humans and open the gates keeping the demons imprisoned, unleashing Hell on Earth, and she is fully intent on fulfilling this deal.
  • Marathon Boss: Before being made easier, she was known to take ~23 minutes to beat.
  • Mean Boss: Darkloft is said by Therona to be verbally abusive to her subordinates.
Therona: (imitating Darkloft) “Why didn’t you kill the Hero? If you don't get stronger, I'll just throw you out!” “I don't care if you want time off, go do this pile of crap that probably doesn't matter because I'm in a bad mood!”
Eelinoth: (also imitating Darkloft) “No, you're not allowed to give the humans cake before you play with them.”
Therona: That one was reasonable, though.
    Eelinoth: Nuh-uh.
Therona: THE POINT IS, now we're dead, and Darkloft got kicked out of you, so for ONCE in our crappy lives, we actually get a freaking CHOICE.
    Eelinoth: And we choose you.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Despite having been a human, she treats humans as beneath her. She willingly became a demonic spirit and wants to Kill All Humans.
  • Obviously Evil: Her armor is very sinister-looking, and she has a demonic blue glow whenever she appears.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the final battle against her, she first transforms into Crystal Darkloft, a much taller version of herself with the eight dark crystals sticking out of her, then for the final phase, calls upon the Demon Lords to transform into Gruesome Darkloft, a mangled monstrosity.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: She once studied under Karuna, until she became frustrated at her weakness and inability to beat her mentors. She donned the Infernal Armor to get stronger, but it corrupted her and she became Darkloft. Except actually subverted- Darkloft possessed her against her will. As soon as Karuna frees her, she shows that she never stopped being good.
  • The Quisling: She is a human who makes a deal with the demons and sells out her race to them in exchange for power.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: The infernal armor of Ellicide has a red and black coloring.
  • Sequential Boss: The final fight against her has three phases. One is her normal self, then she becomes taller and more powerful, and finally she becomes a twisted demonic being.
  • The Social Darwinist: She believes only in accumulating more power for herself and that all her victims deserve to die for being weak.
Aurelie: This... this is horrible! Don't you even feel remorse for what you're doing?
Darkloft: Remorse? What on earth for? If these sniveling wretches really cared for their petty little lives, they would have sought out their own power. Instead, they waste their energy, then wail and moan when someone stronger crushes them.
  • The Sociopath: She is a sadistic warlord who aims to Kill All Humans and has led her armies in killing dozens of innocents. She constantly mocks Aurelie, her possession victim, for being weak enough to give in to her temptation of power. Her Co-Dragons also claim that she's verbally abusive towards them when they fail, which is why they ditch her the moment she's separated from Aurelie.
  • Tin Tyrant: She wears the Infernal Armor of Ellicide, a red and black cursed armor, and is a dictator who kills humans by the dozens. As later revealed, she is actually possessing the armor, which is her Soul Jar.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her very existence reveals that Aurelie is not Darkloft, but being possessed by her.

Darkloft's Forces

Major Villains

    Eelinoth (spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eelinoth_face01.png

A golem girl who serves Darkloft. Always calm, never smiling, she frequently gets in the way of the heroines. Despite her allegiance to the dark lord, she is rather friendly and would rather play with humans than kill them. She is Therona's partner.

  • Affably Evil: Eelinoth is loyal to Darkloft, but respects the party as Worthy Opponents and is always polite to them.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Therona are Darkloft's most trusted helpers.
  • Cute Monster Girl: A golem girl with a cute, blank face.
  • Dark Action Girl: As one of Darkloft's Co-Dragons, she frequently shows up to fight the heroines. Though this is subverted once she turns against Darkloft.
  • Golem: A golem girl. Though how she was created, or if Darkloft created her, is never explained or confirmed. Like most golems, she serves a master (Darkloft) and is loyal, but she does secretly detest her position, and looks for a new master the second she has a chance.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She and Therona were originally high-ranking minions of Darkloft, but when Aurelie is freed from Darkloft, the two decide to serve Aurelie because she's nicer than Darkloft.
  • Hugh Mann: She and Therona attempt to pass as human for the Love Festival, and do so poorly:
Elly: Golly gosh, I sure do enjoy these human festivals of love. Aren't you exited about this extraneous emotion, fellow human?
Thelma: I am so glad I was born a human. If I were a monster with cool wings who could fly all over and rain destruction from above, screaming war cries that would curdle the blood of even the mightiest human warriors... well, that would just be too awesome for my inferior human brain to comprehend! Yes, it is very good indeed to be a human. Like I am. Human.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Darkloft is verbally abusive towards her and Therona. When Darkloft is separated from Aurelie, they side with Aurelie because she treats them more kindly.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • Mockingly referenced when Karuna tries to break up an argument between her and Therona:
Okay, okay, break it up. Just skip to “Behold my true form,” alright? You can argue about this after we defeat you.
    • In Castle Darkloft, she actually does turn into a more powerful, quadrupedal monster thanks to Darkloft's magic.
  • Perpetual Frowner: To contrast her with Perpetual Smiler Therona, she has a blank frown throughout most of her appearances, and never changes it. Only when she is freed from Darkloft's control does she genuinely smile.
  • Recurring Boss: She is fought a total of four times, one of them being a Dual Boss with Therona.
  • Ship Tease: She enters the Love Festival with fellow Co Dragon Therona as her lover; while they are going Undercover as Lovers, they do seem to share some oddly tender moments, and even wind up being one of the winning couples. But despite being a Yuri game, it is never confirmed if they actually are romantically involved.
  • Undercover as Lovers: She and Therona enter themselves as a couple in the Love Festival to beat up the heroines who are also entering.
  • When She Smiles: Throughout most of her appearances, she never changes her blank expression. But in the penultimate area, when talking to the recently-saved Aurelie, she finally smiles when talking to the master who actually treated her with respect.

    Therona (spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/therona_face01.png

A harpy who serves Darkloft. Unlike her parter Eelinoth, she is more enthusiastic about her job of terrorizing humans and fighting the heroines, and scoffs at her partner's more gentle ways.

  • Co-Dragons: She and Eelinoth are Darkloft's most trusted helpers.
  • Combat Medic: She has a skill that heals her party and deals AOE wind damage. This is the skill she uses when she becomes a summonable ally.
  • Cute Monster Girl: A harpy with a pretty face.
  • Dark Action Girl: As one of Darkloft’s Co-Dragons, she frequently shows up to fight the heroines. Though this is subverted once she turns against Darkloft.
  • Harping on About Harpies: Antagonistic variant, as one of Darkloft's Co-Dragons, though she does do a Heel–Face Turn in the end.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She and Eelinoth were originally high-ranking minions of Darkloft, but when Aurelie is freed from Darkloft, the two decide to serve Aurelie because she's nicer than Darkloft.
  • Hugh Mann: She and Eelinoth attempt to pass as human for the Love Festival, and do so poorly:
Elly: Golly gosh, I sure do enjoy these human festivals of love. Aren't you exited about this extraneous emotion, fellow human?
Thelma: I am so glad I was born a human. If I were a monster with cool wings who could fly all over and rain destruction from above, screaming war cries that would curdle the blood of even the mightiest human warriors... well, that would just be too awesome for my inferior human brain to comprehend! Yes, it is very good indeed to be a human. Like I am. Human.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Therona is Ax-Crazy and is eager to kill the party, but has a soft spot for Aurelie. When she's recruited as a summonable ally, Eelinoth claims that Therona secretly wanted to have friends like Aurelie, but is too proud to admit it.
  • Loves the Sound of Screaming: In Hotenshin, while poorly disguised as a human, she says to Eelinoth that she loves to hear the screams of the humans she slaughters.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Darkloft is verbally abusive towards her and Eelinoth. When Darkloft is separated from Aurelie, they side with Aurelie because she treats them more kindly.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • Mockingly referenced when Karuna tries to break up an argument between her and Eelinoth:
Okay, okay, break it up. Just skip to “Behold my true form,” alright? You can argue about this after we defeat you.
    • In Castle Darkloft, she actually does turn into a more powerful, quadrapedal monster thanks to Darkloft's magic.
  • Perpetual Smiler: To contrast with Perpetual Frowner Eelinoth, she always has a smug smile on her face, even when things aren’t going well for her. She only starts frowning when she is free from Darkloft's control.
  • Recurring Boss: She is fought a total of four times, one of which being a Dual Boss with Eelinoth.
  • Ship Tease: She enters the Love Festival with fellow Co Dragon Eelinoth as her lover; while they are going Undercover as Lovers, they do seem to share some oddly tender moments, and even wind up being one of the winning couples. But despite being a Yuri game, it is never confirmed if they actually are romantically involved.
  • Smug Smiler: The smirk on her character portrait is her default expression, and one that almost never changes, reflecting her haughty attitude and Ax-Crazy self.
  • Undercover as Lovers: She and Eelinoth enter themselves as a couple in the Love Festival to beat up the heroines who are also entering.

    Depthsfiend Lurlock
Humans, you are indeed brash to defile this place with your presence.

The boss of the Beach of Danger and the one responsible for killing Lynette's crew.

  • Arc Villain: For the Beach of Danger chapter, as he is the one responsible for the deaths of Lynette's crew, and her goal in the chapter is to get her revenge on him.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Just before the battle, he verbally attacks the heroines for killing the Strange Creatures, whom he considers his children, and takes offense at the idea that they are comparable to humans, who he despises.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: While not skyscraper-level, he does resemble a crab/lobster hybrid and is big, about the same size as the heroines.

    Haathalek
The monster that Depthsfiend Lurlock summoned and used to kill Lynette's crew.
  • Optional Boss: Haathalek can be fought in the final dungeon if the player has the Deathspawn Harp.
  • Our Hydras Are Different: This one has three giant heads and was powerful enough to destroy a ship in the past. However, it lacks the iconic ability to regenerate heads.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: It is only occasionally mentioned, and it can be fought as an Optional Boss near the end, but has very little screentime. Despite this, it is directly responsible for the massacre of Lynette’s crew, the tragedy that is responsible for turning her into the Anti-Hero she is in the story.

    Moirelech
Humans, you think yourselves safe, sleeping away in peace inside this shrine of old? Haha, your physical bodies may be beyond my assault, but your minds... that's a different matter.

A spirit serving Darkloft who serves as the antagonist of the Singing Winds Pass. He sends his four nightmares to torment the heroines by assaulting them with memories of their dark pasts.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Singing Winds Pass, as he sends his nightmares to torment the heroines across the long dungeon.
  • Mirror Boss: He absorbs his nightmares and gains all of the party's abilities, and even goes beyond copying by combining some skills, such as combining Karuna's triple hit skill with her lockdown skill.
  • Nightmare Weaver: He creates four nightmares that themselves are this, then sends them to haunt the party.

    The Nightmares

Bloodpsyche, Lugubriouspirit, Caustiumbra, and Phlenigma

Phlenigma: I can still take your pain from you, Lynette. You have merely to say the word, and your suffering will end.
Bloodpsyche: Surrender, heroes, and know true peace at last.

Moirelech's four minions who torment the heroines in their dreams across the Singing Winds Pass.

  • Arc Villain: Alongside Moirelech for the Singing Winds Pass, as they torment the heroines in each of their nightmares.
  • Mirror Boss: They are sent to attack party members in their dreams in order to scan them. At the end of the pass, the minions show up again, but copy the party members' abilities and fight as a group of four.
  • Nightmare Weaver: They enter the dreams of each of the heroines and create nightmares based on their dark pasts.
  • The Psycho Rangers: They are a team of four and each invade one member of the party, and in the actual battle against them, they turn into dark, twisted versions of the four heroines, using each of their skills.
  • Wolfpack Boss: At the end of the Singing Winds Pass, they fight the heroines all at once.

    Demon Lords of Aothuth (spoilers)
The beings who gave Darkloft her powers and immortality in exchange for her freeing them from imprisonment.
  • Deal with the Devil: Make one with Darkloft- they give her dark powers, and she frees them from their prison in return. Whether they planned on betraying her will never be seen, as she died before the seal was fully broken.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: Though not shown, they apparently rule over the realm of Aothuth and want to escape so they can devour humanity.
  • The Ghost: They are never shown on screen at any point- the closest they get is a bunch of hands which may not even be theirs trying to open the Door to Aothuth, which is quickly re-sealed by Karuna.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: They are the ones who gave Darkloft her immortality and dark powers, with her agreeing to free them from Aothuth in exchange. Everything Darkloft does is to accomplish this goal. However, they are never seen and do not directly antagonize the heroines.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: They are imprisoned in the realm of Aothuth, and Darkloft is trying to open the gate to there. Unlike most examples, the seal is never actually broken- though Darkloft comes very close, Karuna manages to seal the door before it fully opens.

Bosses

    In General
  • Degraded Boss: Many of them have versions later on that serve as regular enemies.
  • To Serve Man: They eat humans and their souls.

    Creeping Monstrosity
Huuuumaaaaansssss... You staaaaand no chaaaance against me and my neeeevereeeending armmmy of miiiiiiinionsssss... Theeeeey sssspriiiiiing forth froooom my veeeerry beeeeeeing. Weeeee will feeeeasssst on your bloooooody coooooorpses!

The boss of Muegil Cavern and the first boss of the game. It is a monster with a skull head.

    Infernal Squid
Hahahaha... human greed is the best lure! There are fabulous treasures just ahead. I want you to die knowing that your souls were close to such magnificent wealth. It'll make your souls that much TASTIER!

The boss of the Aathlen Tidal Caverns. It is a giant squid guarding the treasure of the caverns, which it uses to lure humans in to eat.

  • Flunky Boss: Flanked by two Unholy Divers.
  • Giant Squid: It is about twice the size of the heroines.
  • Sadist: It lures its victims in with promises of treasure just to kill them knowing they failed, saying that it makes their souls tastier.

    Vermin King
What the hell are you doing here? Master already took the piece of the dark crystal that was stored in this crypt. Ah well, I'm not going to complain. I was getting hungry anyways.

The boss of the Rahcreon Crypt. He rules over the Vermin and guards the Crystallized Hope found inside the crypt.

  • Affably Evil: Unlike all the other bosses, he is pretty casual about his desire to eat humans, and doesn't bother trying to intimidate the heroines.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Like the resotof the Vermin, he has pitch black eyes.
  • King Mook: For the Vermin enemies. He even has a crown, cape, and staff.
  • Optional Boss: Unlike the other servants of Darkloft, he isn't mandatory, but does guard a Crystallized hope.

    Philterath
I was once a being of PURE darkness... But I drank all these DELICIOUS potions... GALLONS and gallons of LIQUID. LOOK at what I have become! And then DIE!

The boss of the Pehl Mountain Path. It was once a being of darkness until it consumed potions and became a giant potion monster.

    Ageless Guardian
Travellers, I beseech you! I was once the guardian of this tomb, but the evil energies of Darkloft have thrown me out of balance and I have become corrupted. I cannot control myself and only wish to kill. My bloodlust cannot be sated. You must destroy me so I can once again be pure! I beg of you!

The boss of the Chambers of Rest. It is a dragon that was once the guardian of the chambers, but has become corrupted by Darkloft's energy.

  • Death Seeker: It pleads with the heroines to kill it as it is being controlled by Darkloft against its will.
  • Flunky Boss: Flanked by the Hostile Manifestation and Temperate Manifestation.

    Manos Bat
With the Queen's power, I can make as many indomitable servant illusions as I desire. Arise! And heed my will! Kill! Kill! Kill! Darkloft has decreed it!

The boss of the Fairy Forest. He is an enthusiastic supporter of Darkloft who takes over the Fairy Forest and kidnaps the Queen.

  • Ax-Crazy: He is noticeably more deranged than even the other demons, as his lines convey a sense of erratic bloodthirstiness and he repeatedly commands his illusions to kill the heroines.
  • Flunky Boss: He create illusions of bats to help him in the battle.
  • Psycho Supporter: He eagerly heeds Darkloft's orders and is very enthusiastic about his job of eating humans, and he reveres Darkloft as if she were a goddess.

    Forgotten Lich
Welcome, pitiful humans. I have watched your kind for centuries. You are barely a match for the powers of Darkloft at her weakest, and yet you continue to struggle. She grows exponentially stronger, even as we speak. Lay down your arms and surrender. Your fate will be easier.

The boss of the Cave of Circling Curses.

  • Affably Evil: He is at least willing to politely ask the heroines to surrender and try to talk them down from fighting.
  • Grim Reaper: He resembles the reaper in appearance.

    Homicidal Horror
I will kill every human. Every single one must die. STARTING WITH YOU FOUR!

The penultimate boss of the game. It is a strange floating head with tentacles, five eyes, four mouths, and insect pinchers.

  • The Dragon: Once Eelinoth and Therona leave, it becomes this to Darkloft, as it guards the chamber where she lies and is the last enemy the heroines must defeat to get to her.
  • Extra Eyes: It has five eyes.
  • Flunky Boss: Flanked by three Nightmare Heralds.
  • Tentacled Terror: Among its other odd features, it has tentacles sticking out of its head.
  • Too Many Mouths: It has five mouths on its face, right near its Extra Eyes.

NPCs

    King Erdengard
The king of Erdengard. He is known for being a jerk and is not well-liked.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Downplayed. While he is not a villain or a tyrant, his people do express dislike for his Jerkass personality, and none of the NPCs have anything positive to say about him.
  • Jerkass: He repeatedly belittles Karuna despite her being The Chosen One, uses her desire for the Orb of Light to extort her into running an errand for him, and is generally unpopular with the people.

    Queen Silreah
The queen of the Naga. While nice to her people, she has a huge distaste for humans.
  • I Reject Your Reality: In the backstory, when the archeologist Heather truthfully told her that Naga were descended from humans who were turned into Naga through a ritual, she took it as an insult, called Heather a liar, and banished Heather and all humans from her kingdom.
  • Jerkass: Towards humans.

    King Parvian
The king of Parvian. Of all the monarchs, he is by far the most reasonable, doing everything he can to accommodate the heroines.

    King Hotenshin
The king of Hotenshin. Rather goofy and absolutely obsessed with love and festivals.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He is a Love Freak who enjoys holding festivals, and is so preoccupied with the Love Festival that he considers making the heroines participate in it to be a higher priority than actually giving them the Gem of Hope so they can protect his people against Darkloft. Naturally, this grates on the no-nonsense Lyentte’s nerves.
  • Love Freak: Most of his lines are rambling about love, and one of his festivals is the Love Festival, where he holds various competitions in which the contestant couples test their love for each other.
  • The Wonka: He may be a kooky Love Freak who is more preoccupied with his festivals than anything else, but his people seem to love him for it and are pretty happy with his rule.
