Lost Boys

    Peter Banning/Peter Pan

Peter Banning/Peter Pan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peterbanning.jpg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peterpan_8.jpg

Played by: Robin Williams (adult), Ryan Francis (young) Dubbed by

When Peter Pan decided to leave Neverland and follow Wendy Darling in her world, he started growing up and ended up forgetting everything about his previous life and where he came from, and became a workaholic mergers and acquisitions lawyer who neglects his children. Then, one day, his old nemesis kidnaps his children, and he finds himself having to go back to Neverland and reconnect with his past to have a chance of saving them.

  • Action Dad: Becomes one to rescue his children.
  • The Chosen Zero: Upon returning to Neverland, he's totally clueless, unable to fly, incapable of fighting and overall a laughingstock to the pirates and the Lost Boys alike. Until he recovers all of it thanks to the happiest thought he could possibly have.
  • Emerald Power: Once he recovers his memories, flight power and combat skills, his green suit comes back as well.
  • Fish out of Water: He's grown into a business lawyer who's completely clueless once he goes back to Neverland and wouldn't have survived for long if not for Tinker Bell's help. Returning among the Lost Boys progressively shakes him out of it.
  • He's Back!: One day while he's among the Lost Boys, the baseball ball that Jack hit a homerun with hits his head. He sees his shadow come back and finds his old tree house that was destroyed by Hook after his departure. Peter's memories come back at that moment as, with Tinker Bell's help, he remembers why he went to the normal world and grew up: he wanted to become a father. With this particularly happy thought, he becomes Peter Pan again and can fight, fly and crow again, and regains everyone's respect, Rufio included.
  • Identity Amnesia: As Peter Banning in the normal world, he completely forgot about his life as Peter Pan, the Lost Boys and Neverland as a whole. When he returns, it's all alien to him, until his old memories eventually catch up with him in the right place and time.
  • Married to the Job: Being always stuck to his portable phone for his business matters takes a heavy toll on his family life.
  • Older Than They Look: Due to magic and refusing to grow up into adulthood for decades. Wendy may be in her 90s now, but Peter is likely even older, as he was taken to Neverland as a baby by Tinker Bell herself. Though he is the only denizen of Neverland to be shown aging somehow, in flashbacks, it's much slower than normal until he decides to stay in the normal world, after which he ages normally.
  • Pointy Ears: He had them as Peter Pan, they're gone when he's just Peter Banning, and they come back again without comment when he becomes Pan again. He didn't have them as a baby.
  • Workaholic: When the story starts, he's more concerned about his job than anything else, which takes a toll on his children.

    Tinker Bell

Tinker Bell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tinkerbell_6.jpg

Played by: Julia Roberts Dubbed by

The fairy companion of Peter Pan. She takes the initiative of bringing him back to Neverland and whipping him back to shape to save his children.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Peter used to call her "Tink".
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She eventually confesses her love for Peter, only for Peter to say that he loves his wife, Moira.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: Her fairy wings materialize only when she's flying, and she briefly grows to human size.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: She is a tiny fairy, but she's shown to be able to beat the crap out of human-sized opponents and lift humans in the air effortlessly. When Peter gets accosted by a group of pirates, she single-handedly wrecks them in a classic Bar Brawl.
  • Pointy Ears: She's a fairy after all.

    Rufio

Rufio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rufio_5.jpg

Played by: Dante Basco Dubbed by

The leader of the Lost Boys after Peter Pan's departure. He doesn't take Peter's return well and antagonizes him for a good while.

  • Anti-Hero: He's openly antagonistic to Peter until he starts to show elements of his old self, and also tries leading the Lost Boys away from Peter before that happens. Unlike the others, who use non-lethal methods to subdue the pirates, he's seen running pirates through with his sword and killing them.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He's a great warrior who immediately imposes himself as an arrogant rival to a returning Peter. Until Peter's power and memory return, that is.
  • Canon Foreigner: He and most other Lost Boys who appear, except for Tootles, were created for the film. If the book being more or less the Broad Strokes backstory is any indication, he and the others were "recruited" after its events, since the Lost Boys joined the Darling kids in going back to the regular world.
  • Cincinnatus: Once it becomes clear that Peter Pan is fully back with his flight power and skills, Rufio gives him his sword back in reverence and transfers the command of the Lost Boys back to him, without an inch of hesitation.
  • Cool Sword: He became the owner of Peter's sword after the latter's departure. He gives it back in respect once Peter's fully back, powers and all.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He wears red-and-black with a matching mohawk, but is undeniably a heroic character.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: After being stabbed by Hook, Rufio falls backwards, though Peter manages to catch him. Peter cradles Rufio in his arms as he tells him that he wished he'd had a dad like him before dying.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Hook runs him through with his sword in the Final Battle.
  • Improbable Hairstyle: His punk-ish hairstyle really stands out among the whole cast of the film.
  • Jerkass: He goes out of his way to humiliate and spite Peter, until Peter's flight power and memories return.
  • The Leader: Of the Lost Boys, at least until Peter Pan fully returns.
  • Legacy Character: He has claimed the title of "The Pan" (leader of the Lost Boys) in Peter's absence.
  • The Rival: To Peter, whether the latter likes it or not.

    Thud Butt

Thud Butt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thudbutt.png

Played by: Raushan Hammond Dubbed by

A prominent Lost Boy.

  • Be the Ball: He doesn't turn into a ball in itself but he's used to smash a few pirates like a rolling human ball in the Final Battle.
  • Big Fun: He's heavyset, and quite a jolly fellow once Peter Pan fully returns.
  • Legacy Character: Inherits the Pan's sword after Rufio gets slain by Hook and once Peter decides to return to the real world.

    Pockets

Pockets

Played by: Isaiah Robinson

One of the Lost Boys. He is the first among them to truly recognize Peter Pan in Peter Banning while the others don't.

Pirates

    Captain Hook

Captain James Hook

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jameshook.jpg

Played by: Dustin Hoffman Dubbed by

Peter Pan's old pirate nemesis, who's been missing him for a while and longs for an epic battle where he will finally defeat him. To do so, he kidnaps Peter's children and brings them to Neverland, forcing Peter to return.

  • Antagonist in Mourning: While Peter Pan isn't dead, the Crocodile is, and in the absence of his two archenemies, Hook has become a despondent, sullen mess whose greatest remaining pleasures are making empty suicide threats and sending underlings to the "Boo Box". He badly wants one last glorious war with Peter Pan, to the death, and is genuinely shaken when he discovers that Peter is now an out-of-shape middle aged cowardly man with no memory of Neverland.
  • The Captain: Commands over the pirates of Neverland and the harbor town they populate.
  • The Coats Are Off: For his climatic duel with Peter Pan, Hook has Mr. Smee remove his famous red coat.
  • Death Seeker: If his multiple suicide attempts aren't enough to go on (see below), it's clear that Hook is just so utterly done with life in Neverland that he thinks there's nothing left for him to do but die.
  • Driven to Suicide: He longs for a grander purpose so badly (that is, fighting the true, empowered Peter Pan) that he regularly attempts to commit suicide and it's up to Smee to get him out of it.
  • Evil Old Folks: His luxurious long black hair is revealed to be just a wig, and he really has balding white hair underneath. He leans into his age to make Peter feel sorry for him and catch him off guard. Since people generally don't age in Neverland (except Peter), he's always been like that.
  • Fashionable Evil: Easily the best dressed man in all of Neverland.
  • Hook Hand: Of course. The hook seen in the film is one of the most (if not the most) lavishly crafted and polished/shiny of any Peter Pan media, reflecting the Fashionable Evil, Aristocrats Are Evil and Wicked Cultured sides of this version of Captain Hook. It is easily detachable and is first seen being sharpened on a grinding wheel by a blacksmith, then it's brought to the Captain on a silk cushion with much reverence by Smee, with all the surrounding town full of pirates following Smee and chanting Hook's name, and it sparks when it's plugged into his arm socket. Before sleeping, Hook puts a cork and a cloth cover on it to avoid hurting himself.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Smee convinces Hook to try and turn Peter's children against him. Though he fails with Maggie, he briefly manages to succeed with Jack, preying on Jack's resentment towards his dad (born from Peter's Parental Neglect) and convincing him that he'd be the father to Jack that Peter couldn't be. It works until Hook kills Rufio, allowing Jack to see Hook for the monster he truly is.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: He pulls one on Peter during their duel; when Peter knocks him down, it appears as though he might be finished, but rather than finishing Hook off, Peter offers him his sword to allow him to continue fighting honorably. How does Hook respond? By slashing Peter across the arm with his hook. Clearly he was waiting to lull Peter into a false sense of security in order to weaken him.

    Smee

Mr. Smee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smee_1.png

Played by: Bob Hoskins Dubbed by

Captain Hook's loyal boatswain and manservant. Due to Peter Pan's absence causing a loss of purpose in Hook's mind, he often has to prevent his boss from killing himself.

  • Affably Evil: He wants to see Hook beat his nemesis just as much as Hook does, but doesn't seem to have any real hatred of Peter. He's also easygoing, good-natured, and well-liked among the pirate community, and he's much better at connecting with Peter's kids than Hook. Assuming that the street cleaner at the end is Smee, he's something of a Punch-Clock Villain.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Was the street cleaner at the end (also played by Hoskins) actually Smee, and if so how did he escape Neverland - or just an ordinary lookalike guy? The novelization further leans on this by having him seemingly call Peter by name while saying hello, but it could be that he's talking to the statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, which Peter is lying at the foot of.
  • Sycophantic Servant: He has nothing but reverence and praise for Hook in public and private, though not without some snarky bits in the latter.

    Gutless

Gutless

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gutless.jpg

Played by: Glenn Close Dubbed by

A pirate who made the mistake of betting that Hook wouldn't be able to kill the Crocodile and kidnap Peter Pan's children.

Banning/Darling Family & Household

    Moira

Moira Banning

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moira_0.jpg

Played by: Caroline Goodall Dubbed by

Peter Banning's wife, the granddaughter of Wendy Darling and the mother of Jack and Maggie.

  • Adaptation Name Change: Wendy's granddaughter in the book is named Margaret, which was likely transferred to her great-granddaughter Maggie for the film.
  • Ascended Extra: While her character is largely created for the film, Moira derives from the book which mentions Wendy's daughter and granddaughter in its final chapter.
  • Good Parent: She tends to Jack and Maggie, unlike Peter who initially neglects them.
  • Happily Married: To Peter, even though he's grown neglectful of their children and she tries to fix this.
  • Mythology Gag: As stated in the book and the film (and the much later film Peter Pan & Wendy), Wendy's full name is Wendy Moira Angela Darling, so Moira is named after her.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: She was named Moira to honor her still living grandmother, who has it as her first middle name.
  • One True Love: Even as Tinker Bell confesses her love for him, Peter ultimately considers Moira as the true love of his life.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: Peter leaves his old life behind and marries her, in contrast to the book where she's mentioned to demonstrate perpetual Generation Xerox.

    Jack

Jack Banning

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jack_43.jpg

Played by: Charlie Korsmo Dubbed by

The son of Peter and Moira Banning. Captain Hook kidnaps him and his younger sister Maggie to force Peter to come back to Neverland.

  • Corrupt the Cutie: Hook manages to exploit the Parental Neglect by Peter that Jack suffers from to make him forget about his father. It doesn't work on Maggie, on the other hand.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jack is horrified when Hook kills Rufio, and the look on his face clearly says this. You can hear his voice breaking when he realizes he sided with a monster over his own father.
    Jack: Oh, Dad...I'm sorry...
  • The Resenter: By the midpoint of the film, Jack is so angry at his dad for being as neglectful as he's been that he has no problem smashing a watch he gave him to pieces with a hammer, before smashing one clock for each time he felt slighted by him. At this point, Hook has manipulated Jack into believing that his father never cared about him at all.
  • Spin-Offspring: A non-canonical child of Peter Pan who has major plot importance since the kidnapping of him and his sister by Hook bring Peter back to Neverland.

    Maggie

Maggie Banning

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maggie_1.jpg

Played by: Amber Scott Dubbed by

The daughter of Peter and Moira Banning. Captain Hook kidnaps her and her older brother Jack to force Peter to come back to Neverland.

  • Spin-Offspring: A non-canonical child of Peter Pan who has major plot importance since the kidnapping of her and her brother by Hook bring Peter back to Neverland.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Experiences a version of this when she first sees her father in action and realises what that means;
    Maggie: Peter Pan's my... dad?

    Wendy

Wendy Moira Angela Darling

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oldwendy.jpg

Played by: Maggie Smith (old), Gwyneth Paltrow (young) Dubbed by

The 92 year old grandmother of Moira. She is the Wendy from the Peter Pan story, which turns out to be true in the film's universe.

  • Secret-Keeper: Only she and Tootles know who Peter Banning truly is.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: She's played by Maggie Smith at 92 and Gwyneth Paltrow as a teen girl.

    Tootles

Tootles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cc50ca28f2ceb1a3_600x338.jpg

Played by: Arthur Malet Dubbed by

One of the many "orphans" whom Granny Wendy is said to have found homes for over the decades. He became senile when he became old, and has since lived with Wendy because she could not bear to send him to a retirement home. He's actually one of the Lost Boys who came to the real world.

  • Only One Name: He's only known as "Tootles".
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Literally and figuratively lost his marbles. Though, unlike Peter, he remembers everything about Neverland and Captain Hook...

Others

    The Crocodile

The Crocodile

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crocodile.png

Captain Hook's own animal nemesis who wanted to eat him whole after eating his missing hand. Hook managed to have the animal killed and turned it into a town clock at the pirate harbor.

  • Back from the Dead: Briefly at the end when Hook just happens to be under its dead body that serves as a town clock and pierces its skin with his hook. It's just the moment it gets free from the clock's wooden structure and falls jaws first on Hook, who then disappears. Cue a Burp of Finality from the supposedly dead beast.
  • Burp of Finality: After eating Hook, the crocodile goes back to being a lifeless stuffed animal but not before giving a satisfied burp.
  • The Croc Is Ticking: Used to be ticking due to swallowing an alarm clock, until Hook had it killed. Hook still obsessed over it, turning the dead beast into a town clock and starting to collect and smash clocks from all over Neverland.
  • Death by Adaptation: The only adaptation where Hook kills the animal.
  • Dire Beast: It was definitely not a normal-sized crocodile.
  • Irony: Hook has dreaded alarm clock sounds since the day the animal swallowed his hand and an alarm clock, so he had the animal turned into a town clock after killing it.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Back when it was alive, it wanted to eat Hook. And it still does, given that it comes back to life at the film's climax.
  • Posthumous Character: It's dead, but it still haunts Hook.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Death itself will not stop from the crocodile from eating the rest of Hook. After the clock falls from its mouth, it looks down on Hook with hungry intent and then drops down from clock tower to catch the old pirate in its jaws.
