General main party tropes
Tropes that apply to all members of the main party.
- Ambiguous Gender: As the entire stat progression system used by monsters entails them shifting through a variety of forms, it's pretty much a given that any monsters in your party will cycle through forms of masculine, feminine, and gender-neutral appearances.
- Ambiguously Brown: Several of the Human and Esper character designs available in the DS remake. Also applies to the male Mutant in the original game, or at least his in-game sprite.
- Childhood Friends: A batch of four such friends. The default party name in the DS remake confirms it.
- Interspecies Friendship: Quite probably, unless you're going out of your way to make a completely homogeneous party.
- Hello, [Insert Name Here]
- Interspecies Adoption: The species of the main party members' parents don't change to match whatever race you chose for them to be, making this trope very possible. In fact, it's more likely than not, unless you're specifically coordinating your party's race distribution to avoid it.
- Happily Adopted: Their relationships with their parents seem no worse off for the difference in species.
- Robot Buddy: You're free to make any or all of the protagonist's companions this, if you wish.
- True Companions: They stick together through thick and thin, from the very beginning of their adventure to the very end.
Main Character
- Ambiguous Gender: As the entire stat progression system used by monsters entails them shifting through a variety of forms, it's pretty much a given that any monsters in your party will cycle through forms of masculine, feminine, and gender-neutral appearances.
- The Hero: Naturally.
- Hulk Speak: In the DS remake, if you choose to start as a Minidragonnote or a Familiarnote .
- Interspecies Adoption: If you pick any race other than "Human" for the main character.
- Happily Adopted: The protagonist's love for their parents is just as strong regardless of what race you pick for them.
- Raised by Humans: True in a literal sense no matter what, but this trope is in full effect if you choose to make the main character a Mutant/Esper, Monster, or Robot.
Central Characters
Father
ちちおや Chichioya
Apollo
アポロン Aporon
Goddess
めがみ Megami
FFL2 "Isis"
ちちおや Chichioya
- The Ace: Regarded by most as the #1 member of the Guardians.
- Captain Ersatz: Of Indiana Jones.
- Disappeared Dad: He vanishes after the first scene of the story, and never returns for years.
- Good Morning, Crono: How he wakes you up at the beginning.
- Rebel Leader: Leads the Guardians, who call him "the Colonel".
- Secret Other Family: Appears this way when he shows up seeming to be Lin's father. Turns out he only cares for Lin and her mother while Mask is away.
Apollo
アポロン Aporon
- Affably Evil: Apollo is quite friendly and amicable throughout the game. Even when he reveals he's been using you to gather MAGI for him, he's still quite polite and soft-spoken. He also lets you attack him for a few rounds during the final battle, though this is more due to (over)confidence.
- Big Bad: Though helpful at first, he reveals he's the one that's been attacking the Guardians (As Ashura and Venus were both dead, and Odin had no grudge with them.) and he's trying to use the MAGI to become completely invincible. He's an actual mastermind behind the plot, while the True Final Boss is just an automated defense system.
- The Dandy: The Deities Of Human Origin have chosen largely different A God Am I styles. Apollo has opted to look as elegant and well-dressed a man as possible.
- Deity of Human Origin: Hinted at in the original, as some gods were once mortal beings that accumulated enough MAGI. Moreso in the DS remake, where he indicated some history with Father.
- Evil Plan: Collect all the relics and release their power to become a true god.
- Expy: His appearance is heavily reminiscent of the wizard enemies from The Final Fantasy Legend.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Apollo's Evil Plan succeeds, but he thinks he has all 77 Relics when there are actually 78 — the rumor of 77 was planted by the Guardians. Having an incomplete collection, Apollo's Relics prove to be too powerful for him, gruesomely destroying him as he tries to unleash their power.
- Gambit Pileup: His plan, the Guardian's plan, the heroes plan, etc.
- Light Is Not Good: Though he doesn't seem to have dominion over the sun like his namesake, he does wear white clothing and stay impeccably dressed, while most monsters in the game are horrid beasts.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the original game.
- Macguffin Delivery Service: Apollo recognizes that the main characters are better Relic collectors, and plans to let them collect all the remaining Relics. He then steals them all.
- Out-Gambitted: The guardians spread the belief that there were only 77 Relics. This contributes to Apollo's demise.
- Phlebotinum Overload: Because of the missing MAGI piece, his power is unstable, and he ends up melting and exploding.
- Victory by Endurance: Apollo's battle is unique in that he operates on a strict script, progressing through his attacks and transformations without any player input. He also has the most HP of any enemy in the game by a significant margin (25,000 to the final boss's 10,000). As a result, defeating Apollo is simply a matter of weathering his assault until he reaches his final form and self-destructs; actually defeating him before this happens is a difficult, but not impossible challenge.
- Villainous RRoD: He battles you with powerful attacks and incredible defends with the 77 MAGI. But due to the missing MAGI, his power is unstable, and he destroys himself.
Goddess
めがみ Megami
FFL2 "Isis"
- Almighty Janitor: Literally. The Goddess's entire occupation is to maintain the proper function of the world, the Central Temple and the Sky Pillars.
- Big Good: The most powerful deity, and a genuine force to protect the world.
- Gambit Roulette: In between her needed times of Central Temple maintenance, she intentionally divides herself into smaller pieces and scatters them among the worlds as individually powerful Relics, to promote the raising of heroes who will be powerful enough to collect and assemble the Relics, and then assist her in carrying out repairs.
- Genki Girl: She's quite chipper and good-humored, much to the party's surprise.
- Purposely Overpowered: She possesses all of the relic powers, and her stats are all fully maxed, along with having the magic spell Flare. This allows her to solo one of the Arsenal units guarding the Central Shrine, leaving the protagonists to handle the other.
- Winged Humanoid: She has wings in both the GameBoy and DS versions, though they're more noticeable in the later. They serve to highlight her divine nature.
Home arc
Teacher
せんせい Sensei
FFL2 "Mr. S"
せんせい Sensei
FFL2 "Mr. S"
- A Taste of Power: Mr. S has many powerful abilities to start off, letting you see what a powerful monster is capable of doing.
- Badass Teacher: He was your teacher in your hometown, and stays behind to guard it once you enter the larger world.
- Cyclops: As a slime, his design has one single eye floating in his slime body.
- Expy: Of the slime monsters from The Final Fantasy Legend. He has the same abilities too. The rest of SaGa 2's slime monsters have a different appearance, but are still one-eyed.
- Guest-Star Party Member: Your first one, to introduce you to the concept of temporary party members. He works with you through the first cave.
- Playing with Fire: Knows the Fire spell, and his magic powering it is high enough one-shot the first boss of the game.
Ashura & Guardians arc
Kai
カイ
FFL2 "Ki"
Mask
ふくめん Fukumen
Ashura
アシュラ
Lin
リン Rin
FFL2 "Lynn"
カイ
FFL2 "Ki"
- Armor of Invincibility: Save for the Rhino boss in Ashura's base, Ki is invincible to all physical attacks, probably because of the Relics inside of her.
- Born Winner: Kai was actually born with Relics micronized inside her own body. That's right, she had pieces of the Goddess inside her body. This gave Kai the power to heal.
- "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: One of the game's dungeons is the interior of Kai's body.
- Healing Hands: And she'll heal anyone who visits her at the Goddess's temple. She eventually loses this power after the Relics are removed from her body.
- High Priestess: Of the Goddess's temple, where she's called "Mother Kai".
- White Magician Girl: She operates a temple where people come from all over to have their wounds healed for free. When she joins your party, she barely has any attack capabilities, but many healing powers.
Mask
ふくめん Fukumen
- Body Double: For Father, except for that mask he's wearing, such that he's suspected to be Father during his first appearance.
- Coat, Hat, Mask: Has a coat and hat identical to Father's in the Game Boy version. Both he and Father lose their hats in the DS remake.
- Disappeared Dad: To Lin.
- Guest-Star Party Member: Will join you for a while once you bust him out of Ashura's prison.
Ashura
アシュラ
- Devilish Hair Horns: Fitting his demonic appearance, Ashura has horns.
- Deity of Human Origin: Not literally human, since he was originally a Goblin, but seeing as monsters are just another sapient race in the world of SaGa 2, the same principle is at play.
- From Nobody to Nightmare: Ashura was originally just an ordinary Goblin who managed to collect enough Relics.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His sprite shows him with six arms. While it doesn't outright give him extra attacks, he does do a lot of damage in combat.
- Wake-Up Call Boss: Ashura is the first of the New Gods the party faces off against, and is considerably deadlier than any other enemy the player will have fought up to that point. Considering his role in the last game. however, it does come as a bit of a surprise to fight him so early.
Lin
リン Rin
FFL2 "Lynn"
- The Load: You have Lin as a guest party member all of twice, each time only for a battle in which she's too weak to make any difference.
- Long-Lost Relative: The main character thinks Father is also Lin's father, and seriously suspects that Lin is their little sister. This turns out not to be true.
Venus arc
Venus
ビーナス Bīnasu
Olivia
オリビア Oribia
FFL2 "Flora"
Julius
ユリウス Yuriusu
FFL2 "Nils"
Antony
アントニー Antonī
FFL2 "Leon"
ビーナス Bīnasu
- Deity of Human Origin: It's hinted that all the gods were once mortals who gathered enough MAGI to become gods.
- Faux Affably Evil: She thanks the main characters for defeating Ashura, and grants them permission to come and go in her megalopolis as they please. This is the only extent of her niceness, and she doesn't even to try to disguise how much of a depraved Alpha Bitch she is.
- God Save Us from the Queen!: She is the queen of her own city, and while welcoming to your party, she quickly reveals that she enforces her own shallow whims with an iron grip.
- Rich Bitch: As the queen of a prosperous, technologically advanced city, she adores wealth and class, and greatly looks down on anyone who doesn't live up to her ideals, even those who suffered injuries through no fault of their own.
- Suspiciously Specific Denial: Venus denies that her power or beauty comes from Relics, or that there are any Relics in her world at all. Some people are naïve enough to believe this, like Antony.
- This Is Unforgivable!: Venus's reaction, practically word for word, to Olivia deliberately scarring her own face.
- World's Most Beautiful Woman: And the most graceless one.
Olivia
オリビア Oribia
FFL2 "Flora"
- Arranged Marriage: To Julius. Called off when Venus dies.
- Beauty Is Bad: Olivia decides that freedom from the controlling Venus means marring her own beauty. She slices her own face with a knife and then requests Venus to banish her from her megalopolis. This only pisses Venus off.
Julius
ユリウス Yuriusu
FFL2 "Nils"
- Arranged Marriage: To Olivia. Called off when Venus dies.
- Dark Is Not Evil: He's a demon living in Venus City, but has no real beef with Antony, and willingly steps back once Venus is no longer around to enforce the marriage.
- Dogged Nice Guy: At first Julius seems to be a less sympathetic Prince Charming Wannabe, until it's clear that he never had any more of a choice in the matter than Olivia.
- Easily Forgiven: Julius isn't really one of the good guys or one of the bad guys. He seems rather ambivalent to Venus's control of his life, mostly excited about getting to marry someone like Olivia. When Venus is finally defeated and Julius is no longer betrothed to Olivia, Julius apologizes for his arrogance and remains friends with Olivia and Antony. Olivia points out that Julius didn't actually do anything bad — he didn't actually have a choice in the overall situation, so she saw no fault that needed to be forgiven.
- Hopeless Suitor: Julius actually genuinely likes Olivia, but has no real chance of winning her heart from Antony.
- Horned Humanoid: A demon who's beautiful enough to live in Venus's megalopolis.
- Mr. Fanservice: Julius is said to be popular with the girls, though he himself doesn't seem to be fully aware of this.
Antony
アントニー Antonī
FFL2 "Leon"
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: He only injured his leg, and was still quite beautiful. Venus did not agree, seeing the injury as something that tarnished Antony's perfection, and she banished him from her megalopolis.
- Unkempt Beauty: After exile. Presumably he was better-manicured when living in Venus's megalopolis.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: In the original. He was shirted in the remake.
Edo arc
Otama
お玉
FFL2 "Hana"
Rônin
ローニン
FFL2 "Taro"
Denpachi
伝八
FFL2 "Kame"
Echigoya
越後屋
Shôgun
将軍
Magnate
大御所
お玉
FFL2 "Hana"
- Private Detective: Her dad's former occupation. She kept the business going when her dad died. You assist her in breaking up the banana smuggling ring.
- Tomboy: An irrepressible one at that.
- You Killed My Father: Otama's father was a Private Detective who was killed by Echigoya, but she could never prove it. She's seeking justice.
Rônin
ローニン
FFL2 "Taro"
- Badass Teacher: He's a schoolteacher with a Muramasa.
- Guest-Star Party Member: Joins up for the final part of the Edo arc to directly battle the Shogun and the Magnate.
- Rōnin: Yes, his appellation and occupation are the same.
- Undercover Cop Reveal: Rônin is actually a Guardian, and is friends with Father.
Denpachi
伝八
FFL2 "Kame"
- Only Sane Employee: He seems to have more caution and common sense than Otama.
- Species First Name: In the official 1991 English localization, Denpachi was renamed "Kame", which is Japanese for "turtle".
Echigoya
越後屋
- Ambiguously Gay: The DS remake makes him look extremely Camp Gay, but the game never comes out and says it. If true, this would also make Echigoya a Gayngster.
- Eyes Always Shut: His appearance in the Game Boy version.
Shôgun
将軍
- The Dandy: With a Kefka-level Costume Porn.
- The Dragon: To his father, the Magnate.
- The Man Behind the Man: Echigoya was only a lower level gangster compared to Shôgun.
Magnate
大御所
- Deity of Human Origin: Although he is never given mention by anyone, he is essentially the god of Edo. Unlike the other New Gods, he prefers to rule from the shadows.
- Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: After you defeat Shôgun, Magnate arrives out of nowhere, announcing himself as Shôgun's father, and then kills his own son for failing him. You have to defeat him then and there, and he's as difficult to battle as the other God battles. Sure enough, defeating him yields a cache of Relics.
- The Man Behind the Man: The man behind both Shôgun and Echigoya.
- You Have Failed Me: He kills his son the Shôgun for allowing himself to be defeated.
Odin arc
Odin
オーディン Ôdin
オーディン Ôdin
- Blood Knight: He seeks death in battle, and assist your party to realize his wish.
- Death Seeker: Wanted to ensure his death came at the hands of the world's mightiest warriors.
- Deity of Human Origin: It's hinted that all the gods were once mortals who gathered enough MAGI to become gods.
- Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: If you haven't died at any point before reaching his palace.
- Token Good Teammate: The only "New God" that doesn't turn out to be a conceited dictator.
