Main Characters

     Ranmaru Ai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_ranmaruai.png
Fairy of Illumination

Voiced by: Shogo Sakata
A fairy from the Lux Clan, considered to be the elite of the fairy world. Ranmaru is kind and caring, if a bit of a scatterbrain.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Ranmaru had/has feelings for Sirius, but he was unaware and fell for a human girl instead. He seemed to take this alright until Sirius betrayed the fairy kingdom, and he ended up destroying the kingdom and his own heart in despair. Sirius was unaware of his feelings until the last episode when Ranmaru tells him, though it's somewhat ambiguous whether or not he returns those feelings.
  • Amnesiac Hero: He doesn't remember anything from his past, though he has the feeling he has met Chilka before.
  • Blind Without Them: Ranmaru does need his glasses in his human form. He even wears them in the bath, even though they fog up...
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: All of Ranmaru's ditziness disappears when he enters battle mode, turning him into a focused and strong warrior.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Ranmaru's left wing is visibly damaged. It shattered when he tried to kill himself after Sirius' betrayal.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: The first thing that happens in his Transformation Sequence is that his glasses disappear.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: He's the main character and his weapon is a fencing sabre.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Thanks to a mixture of high perception and so-so social skills, Ranmaru tends to ask blunt questions without thinking much, such as asking Uruu why he always looks like he's at the verge of tears or asking Takara why he sleeps around so much.
  • Meaningful Name: Ranmaru's last name is "Ai", and, despite using different characters to write his name, it's a homophone to the word "love" in Japanese.
  • No Social Skills: Ranmaru isn't dumb, and he is quite perceptive when he pays attention. It's just that he often doesn't, leading to things like him playfully feeding marshmallows to Bakkun while Homura and Uruu are having a tense conversation next to him.
  • Not a Morning Person: Expect to see him dozing off during breakfast.
  • Older Than He Looks: He's actually older than Takara and Hojo, who were still young boys during the rebellion that destroyed the kingdom Ranmaru helped build.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His Color Motif is purple and, as a member of the Lux Clan, he's considered among the strongest fairies.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: His fairy uniform leaves the upper half of his back bare.
  • Stellar Name: Before he lost his memories, he went by the name "Betelgeuse", after one of the stars in the Winter Triangle.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While he is the title character, his quiet personality, lack of memories, mysterious past, and the rotating focus mean that he is rarely the central character of the episodes.

     Homura Hoterase
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_homurahoterase.png
Fairy of Flames

Voiced by: Kosuke Tanabe
A warrior from the Ignis Clan. Homura initially comes off as aloof and brash, but that layer quickly peels off to reveal a kind young man who can't stand injustice.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Whenever Homura wants to comfort someone, he tends to gently put his hand on the back of their head.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Seems to form a crush on his female client Shiina, as well as Uruu, whom the show implies he ends up with.
  • Breath Weapon: The opening shows he can breathe fire.
  • Crush Blush: He blushes often in front of Shiina, the girl he has a crush on. One of the first signs that he's started falling for Uruu is how often Homura blushes in his presence.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: A redhead with fire powers.
  • Facial Markings: In his fairy form, he wears red eyeshadow and has several red marks over his nose and cheeks.
  • Like Father, Like Son: A passionate, fiery young man who ends up winning the heart of a lonely member of the Aqua Clan. The son of the same woman his father had an affair with, no less!
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: Homura gets a crush on Shiina, a young mangaka who happens to look a lot like his Missing Mom.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Homura is the last person to learn that the woman his father was having an affair with was none other than Uruu's mother.
  • Luminescent Blush: He blushes fairly easily when he gets praised or somebody shows concern towards him.
  • Makes Us Even: After he saves Uruu from a wicked soul, Homura claims he's just "repaying the favor".
  • Meaningful Name: Despite using different characters to write his name, "Homura" is a homophone to the word "flame" in Japanese, a reference to both his clan and his fire powers.
  • Playing with Fire: Ignis Clan fairies can control fire.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: After Uruu kisses him in the finale, poor Homura can't do anything but blush and mumble incoherently until the plot comes to drag them both back to action.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: The first thing that happens in his Transformation Sequence is his loosening hair.
  • Thong of Shielding: He wears a red fundoshi combined with crotchless pants.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Homura loves his tabasco sauce. One bite of his curry is enough to make the others breathe fire.

     Uruu Seiren
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_uruuseiren.png
Fairy of Luster

Voiced by: Yutaka Balletta
A member of the Aqua Clan. Uruu's clan pride themselves on their strict discipline and abidance to the rules, something that was instilled into him from an early age, often to a fault.
  • Abusive Parents: His father was an extremely demanding man who would physically punish Uruu when he failed to meet his very high expectations, and brushed off his achievements when he did meet them.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: His fairy design is explicitly inspired by dominatrix imagery, from the '20s Bob Haircut to the Combat Stilettos.
  • Jerkass to One: Uruu is polite to everyone except Homura, whom he often criticises and treats with disdain, most of the times unprovoked. This is because Homura is from the Ignis Clan, who reportedly were plotting his father's political downfall. He is also the son of his mother's lover, whom Uruu blames for her suicide. And finally, the last reason is that Uruu is struggling with his own growing attraction to Homura. After he comes to terms with his feelings and the truth of his mother's death, Uruu starts treating Homura with sweetness, respect, and the occasional friendly bickering.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Or like mother, like son, rather. Uruu ends up following in his mother's footsteps of falling for a member of the Ignis Clan.
  • Making a Splash: As a member of the Aqua Clan, he has control over water and ice.
  • Meaningful Name: "Uru" and its variations means "moist" or "teary-eyed" in Japanese.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He says this verbatim when he has to give an explanation for why he saved Homura's life after Chilka almost killed him.
  • Parental Neglect: His mother was too absorbed in her own issues to love or care about him, and it's implied she resented Uruu for taking after his father.
  • Princely Young Man: In his human guise. Uruu is polite and elegant, and is highly admired by his classmates for his refined manners and intelligence. That image quickly disappears whenever Homura is in the room, though.
  • Unable to Cry: When Ranmaru asks him why does he always look like he's holding back tears, Uruu reassures him that he will never cry.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: As a child, Uruu would constantly try to excel at everything, hoping it would earn him his parents' love... sadly, it didn't.

     Jyuka Mutsuoka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_jyuukamutsuoka.png
Fairy of Verdure

Voiced by: Taichi Kusano
A young fairy from the Arbor Clan. The team healer, Jyuka is cheerful and friendly, but wishes he could be more of a badass warrior like his team mates.
  • Caring Gardener: At school, Jyuka is in charge of the flower beds. He also helps Aru with her kindergarten's potato garden project.
  • Combat Medic: While his clan specializes in healing and support, Jyuka is still a competent fighter.
  • Green Thumb: The Arbor Clan is associated with nature and plants.
  • Hates Being Called Cute: Jyuka has a more youthful and energetic image, but he'd rather be called "cool" than "cute."
  • The Heart: He often acts like the peacekeeper during Uruu and Homura's squabbles.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He thinks little of his skills and laments that he isn't as physically strong as the rest of the group. His character arc is about him recognizing his own worth while also becoming stronger.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Not only does Jyuka find it frustrating that he is often called "cute" over "cool", but he finds the Arbor Clan's primary role in the Fairy World to be plain compared to the rest of the fairies.
  • Interclass Friendship: The Lux Clan are considered the elite of the fairy world, while the Arbor Clan are the much-needed but often underappreciated healers. That doesn't stop Jyuka and Ranmaru from being best friends.
  • Keet: His first client contacts him because she wants to take cuteness lessons from him, that's how sweet and energetic our Jyuka is.
  • Magic Wand: He has wand that he uses for healing, though that one is shaped like a lollipop.
  • Meaningful Name: Jyuka's name uses the characters for "tree" and "fruit."
  • Squee: Jyuka gets starry-eyed and flustered whenever his friends do something cool or gallant.
  • Vapor Wear: His shorts have cuts on the side that pretty much confirm he wears nothing underneath.

     Takara Utashiro
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_takarautashiro.png
Fairy of Gold

Voiced by: Akihiro Hori
The heir of the Metallum Clan. As the oldest member of the team, Takara is more-or-less in charge on keeping an eye on the young ones. Despite his laid-back and easygoing attitude, he knows more than he lets out.
  • Anywhere but Their Lips: He has a "no kissing" policy with the women he sleeps with. While there's the issue of kissing being the trigger for his Transformation Sequence, it's also implied he considers it too intimate for loveless sex.
  • The Big Guy: He's the tallest and most muscular member of the team, and he can punch holes through walls without breaking a sweat.
  • Coat Cape: In his fairy form, he wears a fur-trimmed leather jacket over his shoulders.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Originally the prince of the Metallum Clan, his father was murdered by an usurping branch of the family who then made Takara their next target. His mother managed to flee with him, but they were forced to live on the streets just in time for the rebellion that left the fairy world in shambles. When he was still a boy, his mother succumbed to illness and malnutrition. Takara then fled to the human world, where he ended up working as a child prostitute in order to survive.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: The Metallum clan controls minerals and gemstones.
  • Gender Rarity Value: The Metallum Clan produces very few males, so the few boys that are born are given positions of authority. In Takara's case, he was meant to be the next clan chief. On a darker side, he was also expected to sire as many children as possible as soon as he's biologically able to, with as many women as possible, whether he wanted it or not.
  • Meaningful Name: "Takara" means "treasure" in Japanese.
  • Noble Fugitive: He's the rightful heir to the Metallum Clan, but his father was murdered by an usurper when Takara was just a baby, forcing his mother to flee with him.
  • Power Fist: His weapons are a pair of gold brass knuckles.
  • Screen Tap: At the end of his Transformation Sequence, Takara grabs the camera and points it to his chest and his face.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: The first thing that happens in his Transformation Sequence is his short ponytail untied.
  • Team Chef: He's the one responsible serving the food of Bar F. The problem is that he's a One-Note Cook that only serves curry, to Jyuka's annoyance.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: In his fairy form. He wears his coat over his shoulders and some armor on his chest, but that's it.

Fairy Court

    The Queen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_queen.png

Voiced by: Shiori Mikami
The ruler of all fairies. Despite her sweet and childlike appearance, she has a cold and pragmatic personality.

    Hojo Omamori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_hojoomamori.png

Voiced by: Junpei Morita
The Queen's butler, always by her side. He's been under her service since he was a young boy.
  • Battle Butler: Aside from her servant, Hojo is also the Queen's bodyguard.
  • Combat Hand Fan: His weapon is a yellow fan.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He's from the earth clan, and can manipulate the soil and rock.
  • Ignored Enamored Underling: He has devoted his life to the Queen. While she appreciates him and confesses he's the only person she trusts, she doesn't seem to hold romantic feelings for him. Hojo isn't hurt by this, claiming that he chose to be by her side.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He will always protect the Queen, no matter what happens.
  • Younger Than He Looks: He's younger than the Queen, Sirius, and Ranmaru but while they remain youthful, Hojo looks like a middle-aged man.

    Bakkun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_bakkun.png

A small, pastel tapir that accompanies Ranmaru and the other fairies on their mission to collect attachment for the Queen.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": A baku (tapir) named Bakkun (which is like calling it Tapy).
  • Baku: It's in the name. This one doesn't eat dreams or nightmares, but rather helps harvest attachment energy from human hosts.
  • Healing Hands: Like Jyuka, it has healing capabilities and helps the fairies recover. After his near-death experience, Homura has Bakkun clinging to him in order to recover.
  • Pokémon Speak: The only noise it makes is "baku".
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Like many magical girl animal mascots, it's clearly designed to be as cute as possible.

Villains

     Sirius Tenroin / Chilka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fairyranmaru_siriustenroin.png

Voiced by: Tetsuei Sumiya
A mysterious fairy who wanders the human world, bringing disaster wherever he goes.
  • Big Bad: He's the one spreading wickedness all over the city, unleashing the anger and hatred in people's hearts.
  • Dark Reprise: The music of his Transformation Sequence is an ominous-sounding version of the song used by the good guys, replacing the trumpets and saxophones for violins and electric guitars.
  • Defector from Decadence: He became tired of gathering attachment to fuel Queen Procyon's ever-growing, increasingly unsustainable kingdom, and pursued romance with a human woman. After that failed, and seeing how far Procyon was willing to go to get her way, he outright rebelled against her.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": He forfeited his old name, and now calls himself Chilka. Promotional material and merchandising still markets him as Sirius, though.
  • Dramatic High Perching: He loves standing on rooftops, rails, streetlights, and the likes, usually to spy on the Victim of the Week. During the battles, he also tends to watch the fights from above, only descending when he wants to interfere.
  • Meaningful Name: Aside from his original Stellar Name, his alias "Chilka" is from 散るか (read "chiruka"), containing the word for "to fall" or "to scatter". This name comes from a poem he recites, which talks about falling cherry blossoms.
  • Oblivious to Love: He never realized that Ranmaru was in love with him, despite the other laying waste to the fairy world and destroying his own heart upon his betrayal. He only finds out when Ranmaru explicitly tells him in the last episode.
  • The Sacred Darkness: He's a member of the Tenebris Clan. While he eventually went rogue, in the past he used his powers for good.
  • A Sinister Clue: He is left-handed, and involved in most of the show's conflicts.
  • Stellar Name: He's named after one of the stars of the winter triangle.
  • Took A Level In Cynicism: He used to be a romantic, but having his heart cruelly broken by the woman he loved, followed by said woman dying in suspicious circumstances, soured Chilka's opinion on love, humanity, and his own kind.
