    Dave

Dave

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_15_08_dave_the_diver_characterwebp_webp_image_600_817_pixels_scaled_91.png
The eponymous diver; Dave is a chubby, friendly guy who got suckered into becoming the sole supplier/manager of Bancho Sushi on the promise of a free lunch, and now dives to make the most of his situation and perhaps earn his vacation back.
  • Acrofatic: Played with; Dave is a pretty agile swimmer despite being incredibly rotund. Outside of water however, he's both a slow runner and somewhat clumsy.
  • Big Fun: Dave might be overweight but he's a friendly and likeable person to be around.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Dave; if there is a dangerous situation that needs someone to investigate, it's usually him getting thrown in while everyone else stays at a safe distance. He's been attacked by aggressive sea fauna, pirates, eco-terrorists, and mutant Fish People throughout his dives, and more often than not he'll get no acknowledgement for his actions. And he doesn't get to eat much of Bancho's sushi, despite sushi being one of his favorite foods.
  • Graceful in Their Element: On land, Dave is rather out of shape and a bit clumsy, such that he can't run down the length of a sushi bar without getting exhausted. In the water, though, he's quite nimble and even possesses Stout Strength, able to keep up with ex-Navy SEAL John Watson during their confrontations and capable of hauling in large fish that weight several kilos.
  • Hidden Depths: Surprisingly shows a good amount of knowledge of fish species when encountering bosses.
  • Made of Iron: Dave doesn't have proper health, as all attacks deal damage to his Oxygen Meter. As long as he has oxygen, he can tank hits from massive sea creatures without dying, including bites from a Kronosaurus that can destroy a weapon-proof submarine.
  • Nice Guy: Exploited and teased as he is, Dave never gets truly angry at his friends and does his best to be helpful and friendly to all he meets.
  • No-Respect Guy: Despite doing the majority of the work involved with the sushi restaurant and fulfilling diving requests for multiple people, Dave sadly gets dismissed or passively insulted constantly. The Epilogue, though, reveals that his friends do appreciate him for his hard work and dedication, and his Hiring Manager Yoshie even notes that Bancho Sushi's Cooksta followers have started attributing some of the restaurant's success to his service. To top everything off, the Sea People build a statue of Dave as thanks for his restoration of their sacred tree and defeating their ancient enemy Yawie once and for all.
  • Stout Strength: Dave apparently is hiding a ton of muscle behind all that fat, considering the sheer size of the fish he's able to harpoon and reel in. He's also clearly got some serious arms on him since he's able to wrestle with sharks by the mouth.

    Cobra

Cobra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_15_50_cobrawebp_webp_image_584_462_pixels_9.png
A colleague of Dave's who calls him out to the Blue Hole with the promise of a sushi dinner. Upon arriving, Dave realizes Cobra was actually conning him into being the supplier of a new business of his- a sushi restaurant built alongside a mysterious Giant Blue Hole filled with fish from all over the world.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Greedy businessman and Con Artist he may be, Cobra has some standards in operating his business and doesn't take too kindly to nutjobs like John Watson, and can be talked down from other ventures when other unethical things like poaching or harsh exploitation of the Sea People become a risk.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: During the ending animation sequence when he gets a phone call from someone, his face morphs from laughing to serious to annoyance or anger, slamming his beer glass down. At the very end, we never know who he's talking to but this is one of the rare moments he adopts a more serious expression in contrast to cheerful, chill personality.
  • Reformed Criminal: It's never outright stated, but Cobra's implied to have had a shady past given his dealing with a weaponsmith like Duff and having someone on call to buy high-grade explosives (a conversation reveals that Dave first met Cobra when he recovered a briefcase Cobra had dropped that contained weapons blueprints he was planning to sell on the black market). Cobra's left that life behind, but he's still a greedy man looking for his next big business opportunity and isn't above nickel and diming Dave at every opportunity he gets.
  • Universal-Adaptor Cast: Cobra looks/acts almost identically to another character known as Cobra in a game Mintrocket also made, called Evil Factory, in which he sold weapons and weapon blueprints to the player. While its not explicitly stated that he is the same person in both games, Dave seeing him drop a briefcase of weapon blueprints seems to solidify, or at least nod to the relation.
  • We Buy Anything: Cobra asks as the main "shop" for Dave, he'll buy bits and pieces of material Dave fishes up (such as silver bowls, fossils, and flasks), which can come in handy if Dave is a bit short on cash. This leads to...
  • We Sell Everything: Cobra also sells Dave one-time upgrades before his dives and interior decorations for the restaurant. The one-time upgrades range from a larger oxygen tank, net traps, and exterior crates that Dave can drop off some extra loot into.

    Bancho

Bancho

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_16_24_banchowebp_webp_image_417_499_pixels.png
A sushi chef and old friend of Cobra's who partnered up to create truly unique sushi. Bancho is a master of his craft, but has a reputation for "experimenting" and can be quite temperamental and prideful, often to his detriment as the "incident" that nearly sank his career can attest to.
  • Angry Chef: Very, very downplayed, but despite Bancho's Stoic tendencies he has very little patience for people who mock or insult his food without trying it first. Even when he's visibly incensed by such a thing it still comes off as Tranquil Fury more than anything.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: Bancho can more often than not be found resting with his arms in this position, complimenting his totally stone-faced demeanour.
  • Berserk Button: Complaining about his food without eating it or giving him unconstructive criticism is a surefire way to set him off, as Bancho takes his food and preparing it to the best of his ability deadly seriously. It was him having an angry reaction to Lois Crawford refusing to even try his Whole-roasted Shark Head that lost him his old job at the Dugong Hotel.
  • Closet Geek: Bancho is actually a huge fan of Michael Bang's films and claims they are deep, heartfelt masterpieces despite clearly being just as brainless and explosion-filled as the implied real-life influence. He also enjoys rap music and is familiar with MC Sammy's portfolio.
  • Consummate Professional: He takes his job, and the craft of sushi, dead seriously, and demands professionalism from his business partners. Any insult about his ability to cook sushi he sees as a challenge, and he will not tolerate anyone disparaging it without trying it first. He actually lets Dave be the manager of the restaurant so he's able to focus exclusively on running the kitchen and experimenting on new dishes.
  • The Comically Serious: Bancho is incredibly taciturn and reserved, even when surrounded by all manner of comedic characters and antics.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Bancho has always striven to push the bounds of sushi, and can make practically anything Dave pulls out of the sea edible. This includes pufferfish, jellyfish, and calcified coral (Although admittedly that last one was a special case). Oh, and at least two dishes involving fried whole heads. While some of his creations look very unappetizing, such as the shark head dish that caused the Dugong Hotel incident, they are in fact very delicious.
  • Hopeless with Tech: When it comes to using his cellphone to take pictures, Bancho is prone to make amateurish mistakes like not focusing the camera, getting his hands in the frame, or shooting at such an angle the sun's rays blind the picture.
  • My Greatest Failure: The Dugong Hotel Incident. Bancho was a chef at the restaurant when well-known actress and food critic Lois Crawford arrived for a stay. The regular chef was out of town, so Yoshie asked Bancho to take over. Bancho initially offered his whole roasted shark head as a dish, but Yoshie rejected this on the basis that Crawford was a notorious Picky Eater and would smear the hotel if they gave her something too outlandish, instead suggesting Bancho stick to a more traditional sushi platter. Bancho reluctantly agreed, and ultimately Crawford was unimpressed by his offering. In an effort to make amends and prove himself, Bancho brought out the shark head, and the mere sight of it drove Crawford to disgust and led to her cancelling her stay and writing a scathing review of the hotel. Bancho left the hotel to train, and would not resurface as a chef until Cobra brought him in to run Bancho Sushi
  • The Perfectionist: Bancho's personal philosophy is to always make the best possible sushi he can, no matter what. Most of the time it actually works out for him due to his sushi-making skills really being that good, and over time it leads to Bancho Sushi becoming a critically-lauded, commercially successful restaurant and budding franchise with the help of Dave's managerial skills.
  • Serious Business: Bancho takes his job as a sushi chef with the same amount of resolve and no-nonsense attitude one might expect from a master craftsman or surgeon, and as such he does not take kindly to anyone disparaging his food without even trying it. If they do actually try it and have critiques, he'll do everything in his power to better himself for next time.
  • Supreme Chef: Bancho is a master of his trade, and his backstory reveals he was a chef at a number of very prestigious Japanese restaurants before the Dugong Hotel incident and later founding Bancho Sushi. He can make awesome-tasting sushi out of literally any sea creature Dave gives him on top of all the mouthwatering recipes he can prepare, and one of the decorations for Bancho Sushi is a fugu (pufferfish) preparation license that belongs to him, which are notoriously difficult to obtain since they're essentially a certification that the chef can prepare an extremely poisonous fish in a way that eating it won't more or less instantly kill you. He also likes to experiment with new ingredients and combinations as a way to further the art of sushi, which leads to him butting heads with celebrity chef Vincent Yamaoka, who has a much more traditionalist view of the art of sushi.
  • The Stoic: His unflappability is unmatched by anyone in the game, and he is unfailingly calm and polite no matter what wacky happenstance Dave and Cobra bring to his doorstep.
  • Sword Beam: One of the cutscenes shows Bancho dramatically drawing a knife like he's unsheathing a katana, and going to town with arcs of blue light shooting out of Bancho Sushi.
  • Western Samurai: Parodied. Bancho is just a sushi chef, but he treats his occupation as though he were following a rigid code of honor as well as being reserved and polite at all times, not unlike the tenets of bushido. His cutscenes also have him doing over-the-top seafood preparation reminiscient of shounen anime.

    Yoshie

Yoshie

An old colleague of Bancho's, Yoshie is a prim, business-minded woman who comes in to act as Bancho Sushi's hiring manager once she is won over.
  • Mr. Exposition: Yoshie ends up being the one to explain Bancho's backstory to Dave and why he almost quit cooking. Helps that she was there and played a role in the incident to boot.
  • Through His Stomach: Yoshie is rather dismissive of Bancho Sushi due to her past relationship with Bancho, but once she actually tries Bancho's cooking she is won over and instantly on board with making the restaurant a success.

    Momo

Momo

Bancho's cat, Momo, is a tuxedo cat that lounges about the restaurant during the daylight hours before disappearing into the night. Dave can befriend Momo and discover just what he's up to during the night hours.
  • Cats Are Lazy: Momo doesn't do much during the day but lay on the counter and demand cat food. He's far more active at night, though what he does at night is a mystery until Dave follows him.
  • Cute Kitten: Momo is a very friendly and adorable cat, even more so when Dave meets his mate and their kitten.
  • Through His Stomach: Dave befriends Momo by giving him cat food he recovers during his dives. Giving him enough opens up the tailing mission where Dave follows Momo after hours to see where he goes off to at night.

    Maki

Maki

A shy girl who wanders into Bancho Sushi one day, Maki is initially unable to really open up and speaks through a clione Hand Puppet. Once Dave completes her quest line she joins the staff as a chef, hoping to hone her skills as her father wanted her to.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Downplayed in that her high cooking skill comes at the cost of having very mediocre stats in every other category as well as no other cooking-related skills save for ones that boost her stats. Still, you could have the second chef make up for the lack of skills.
  • Disappeared Dad: Maki's father was a marine biologist who disappeared while studying cliones, and part of Maki's reasons for arriving at the restaurant is the hopes that she might find some information about his whereabouts.
  • Hand Puppet: In her first appearances, Maki speaks through a hand puppet designed to look like a clione. Compared to Maki, it is a rather foul mouthed and loud little thing.
  • Irony: Maki's favorite animal is the clione, and her father was studying cliones when he disappeared. Ultimately, Dave finds out that Maki's father was killed by the very animals they both loved when he finds a picture and video message to Maki among the corpse of the Clione Queen.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: You wouldn't think given her Shrinking Violet personality, but Maki has the foulest mouth among the entire cast (granted, she vents that frustration through her puppet, and she cleans up her dialogue after she begins to open up more).
  • Supreme Chef: When fully leveled up, Maki has the highest cooking rating of any staff in the game at the staggering rate of 2100. Nearest competitors usually top out in the 17-1800 range.

Friends

    Dr. Bacon

Dr. Bacon

An archaeologist that is conducting research in the area, specifically on the ancient Sea People civilization that once lived in the Giant Blue Hole. After his regular assistant went bankrupt on the crypto market, Dr. Bacon drafts Dave into helping him recover artefacts and explore ruins within the ocean.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Played with. Dr. Bacon usually leaves the adventuring to Dave, but midway through the game he goes exploring after dinner at Bancho's Sushi, filled with a bit of liquid courage, and discovers a Sea People site above the surface. It's been invaded by pirates and the good professor has to run from them in a high-speed motorboat chase, being fired on and everything, to save a Sea People artefact.
  • The Alcoholic: Downplayed, but in his off-time he tends to drink to excess. A good number of his Cooksta posts involve him being shocked at how much he drank the night before, which probably isn't healthy.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Not to the same extent as Duff, but Dr. Bacon does have a knack for pulling technology together; he provides the first upgrades to Dave's diving gear, and makes a number of trackers to help Dave locate Sea People ruins and artefacts.
  • Verbal Tic: Fond of saying things are "lucky."

    Duff

Duff

A gunsmith and yet another of Cobra's colleagues, Duff helps supply Dave with weapons and gadgets as Dave ventures further into the Giant Blue Hole.
  • Basement-Dweller: Aside from his profession as a gunsmith, Duff fits the stereotype of a fat, sweaty Otaku who rarely leaves his basement and fawns over anime girls and idol groups.
  • The Blacksmith: Duff is a gunsmith who will make anything Dave has the blueprints for, from rifles to shotguns to grenade launchers. He even tests them in his personal marksmanship pool.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: It's implied that his "Goodbye-ternity" signing off is taken from one of his animes.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: A master gunsmith who is able to work with the limitations of the Blue Hole's bizarre natural phenomena, while also being a stereotypical Basement Dwelling Otaku.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Besides making guns, Duff also provides some gadgets (like an automated headlamp) that help Dave explore the depths more effectively.
  • Geek Physiques: Duff embodies every physical sterotype of a quintessential weeaboo you can imagine. He's overweight, he has thick glasses and a neckbeard, his posture indicates he rarely leaves his chair, etc.
  • Occidental Otaku: Duff loves anime and idols, keeping a plethora of figurines and merch from his favorite idol group/anime leads Stra Stella (based on free to play game Master of Eternity). He's also obviously Caucasian.

    Otto

Otto

A loudmouth farmer and former fisherman who arrives at Bancho Sushi one day in search of moray eel curry and a place to settle down for a little while. After bringing him food, he becomes Dave's main supplier of farmed fish and produce such as rice.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Took a harpoon to the knee in his younger years, ending his fishing career and relegating him to land.
  • Call to Agriculture: Following his injury, Otto retired as a fisherman and became a farmer instead. After he gets his special dish, he opens up a fish farm and vegetable/rice farm nearby Bancho Sushi, so Dave can have a constant supply of harder to catch fish and fresh vegetables for dishes.
  • Disappeared Dad: To MC Sammy, though not willingly; Otto was washed out to sea some time ago and never made it back home, so he settled down in the hopes of stabilizing his life and finding his way back eventually. Fortunately, Sammy ends up finding him and the two work together to run the farm supplying Bancho Sushi.
  • Rambling Old Man Monologue: Otto has a habit of going on and on and on about stories from his past until someone interrupts him or tricks him into stopping.

    Ellie

Ellie

A marine biology student doing research on the Blue Hole, Ellie drafts Dave into collecting samples for her in exchange for some money and various trinkets he picks up.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Of all of Dave's acquaintances, Ellie is the rudest among them who frequently doubts Dave's experience and skill as a diver. She even says on her post for Cooksta how she doesn't like the weird server, although she was probably being sassy. That said, she does help find the baby whale for free.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: After helping save the baby whale, she snaps that Dave should help the wildlife of the Blue Hole out once in a while instead of spending all his time hunting them.

    Sato

Sato

Sato is a man who came to the Blue Hole in search of Marinca, a digital card-collection game based on fish caught from the Blue Hole. Not being a diver himself, he asks Dave for help in expanding his collection and catching all of the great and bizarre creatures that roam the Blue Hole.
  • Expy: Essentially a middle-aged Ash Ketchum who never gave up on collecting rare creatures. His name is even taken from Ash's Japanese name Satoshi.
  • Manchild: Besides his obsession with trading cards, Sato is a fan of Tamagotchi style games and paddles around the blue hole in a kiddie pedal boat.

    Udo

Udo

A reporter for a local ocean magazine. Unfortunately, he can't dive, so he pays Dave to take photos for him.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Well... he would be if he knew how to dive. As it is, he does get weekly scoops on mutated wildlife once the "Fishmon" sidequest starts up, and even helps set up a photographic opportunity or two, but he mostly leaves the "intrepid" part to Dave.

    Clara

Clara

An old woman who approaches Dave on a stormy day, asking if he might aid her in getting revenge against Klaus, the Great White that killed her husband.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Comes in at the last second to save Dave and defeat Klaus once and for all.
  • Cool Old Lady: Clara is an old woman who has been hunting a massive shark for decades, and she ultimately lands the final blow against Klaus with a Megaton Punch just as he goes to eat Dave.
  • Crusading Widow: Klaus killed her husband long ago, and now Clara has dedicated her life to killing Klaus.
  • Megaton Punch: Clara lands the finishing blow on Klaus by swimming in front of Dave and socking the shark in the face, sending him reeling.

    Travelling Merchant

Travelling Merchant

A strange, chipper traveller who also dabbles in selling items and has moved from sailing the Grey Isles to the Blue Hole after aberrated fish start showing up. She loans Dave the Sky Fire to navigate the eerie red fog and dredge up any treasure.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: She can redirect the Hooded Figures to different restaurants if you feel like gathering enough aberrated fish to feed them is too much of a hassle.
  • Plucky Girl: Just like her previous appearance, she's just as cheerful as ever helping any local sailors with aberrated fish or managing the hooded figures.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: Her appearance is a faithful pixel adaptation of her DREDGE design, which makes her stand out from the cartoony cast with her grey-ish skin tone and duller colours.
  • Vague Age: Her age is in question considering she looks exactly the same as in DREDGE despite the large year gap between the former being set around the 1940's while this game is explicitly set in 2022.

VIP Customers

    Vincent Yamaoka

Vincent "The Gourmet" Yamaoka

A celebrity chef and TV presenter that arrives at Bancho Sushi to judge its food. Vincent holds a more traditional, elitist view on what counts as sushi and what does not, so Bancho has a special dish prepared in order to change his mind.
  • Caustic Critic: While he's not as harsh as some critics in fiction (and certainly not as harsh as Lois, the customer that almost torpedoed Bancho's career in the past), he does have an elitist view on sushi and doesn't give Bancho Sushi full marks despite being blown away by the jellyfish sea grape sushi he was served because he wanted a beer to go with the sushi and Bancho Sushi didn't have the capacity to serve beer at the time, but he arranges for a beer machine to be delivered to the restaurant afterwards.
  • Constructive Criticism: Vincent is a fair judge and is more than happy to offer advice to chefs and restaurants he visits, whether it's diversifying their drink selection or broadening their ingredients for a more diverse offering.

    Michael Bang

Michael Bang

Famous Hollywood action movie director. Michael Bang steps into Bancho Sushi during a creative dry spell, asking for something truly inspiring to get him back on track. His special dish opens up the farm and allows high quality rice to be grown and added to dishes.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: He's a pretty clear Expy of Michael Bay, from his name down to his specialization in explosive action movies.
  • Writer's Block: Film version; Bang is stumped on filming the climax of his next big project, so he goes to Bancho Sushi hoping the unique dining experience will jog his creativity.

    MC Sammy

MC Sammy

A rapper who arrives at Bancho Sushi in search of vegetable sushi. While initially he's disappointed, learning that Bancho is a fan of his work leads him to stick around for a few days, since vegetable sushi is a more complex dish and Bancho will need time to gather ingredients and research the dish.
  • Call to Agriculture: After reconnecting with Otto, Sammy decides to take a sabbatical from his rap career to work the farm with his dad, specifically managing the chicken coop installed on the farm and providing the restaurant with a steady supply of fresh eggs.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: Discussed. Sammy tells Dave that while he loves music, he did find the celeb life tiring, which is why once he reunites with his father, he's happy to work with his father on the farm since he can still easily write and publish music online.
  • Nice Guy: Unlike his father Otto's first appearance, when Sammy shows up, he politely asks if Bancho sells vegetable sushi. While initially disappointed by the lack of vegetable sushi, he takes it with grace and is happily willing to wait when Bancho asks to be given time to prepare the dish.

    Wang Pang

Wang Pang

A Chinese chef and one of the best in Hong Kong. Pang visits Bancho Sushi as part of Vincent Yamaoka's program "Challenge the Chef", so that he might pit his skills against Bancho's.
  • All Chinese People Know Kung-Fu: While he never physically throws down, Wang Pang does make some kung-fu poses on his way out of the restaurant after his first meeting with Bancho, indicating he knows a little of the art.
  • Chubby Chef: Wang Pan is a rather stout man (comparable to Dave) and is regarded as one of the best chefs in the business.

    Alex Cooper

Alex Cooper

A British chef who specializes in fried cooking. He is the second chef to challenge Bancho as part of Vincent Yamaoka's program "Challenge the Chef".
  • Expy: Is blatantly a parody of Kyo Kusanagi from The King of Fighters.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: He leaves Bancho Sushi in tears after he loses the Cooking Duel.
  • One-Note Cook: He specializes in fried foods and... that's about it. Granted, Vincent does say that his serving of fish and chips was spectacular, but he criticizes Alex for choosing one of the most basic fried seafood dishes in existence while Bancho presented a wide variety of seafood (fish, squid, and shark) in his dish, which better captured the spirit of the competition.

    Pastro Antogiovani

Pastro Antogiovani

An Italian chef who comes to Bancho Sushi as part of Vincent Yamaoka's "Challenge The Chef" series. Only this time, he has another powerful backer behind him: Lois Crawford.
  • Punny Name: An Italian chef that specializes in pasta who has the first name "Pastro".
  • Sore Loser: When he loses, he cannot believe that he lost in a pasta competition (his expertise) and calls Vincent's show lame and that it isn't worth his time, being the only competitor to leave alone and in anger. Even though he was so confident he would win. An irritated Vincent lampshades how he's hot-tempered but did have a delicious pasta.

    Lois Crawford

Lois Crawford

A well-known actress and food critic who is the heiress to her father's company, Nolan Crawford's B&C Company.
  • Caustic Critic: Just like Vincent, she has an elitist view on food albeit worse than him considering she was the one who gave an awful review to Bancho's cooking without trying it out because of simply how ugly the dish looked. While Vincent does loosen up on the view after tasting his food and helps Bancho with his business, it takes her a while until she finally tries out Bancho's dish that she realizes she was prejudiced in her review.
  • Creator Killer: In-Universe; her harsh review of the Dugong Hotel did more damage to her career than it did Bancho's or the hotel's, and when we meet her in the present day Lois is in a creative slump with few successful movies since the review.
  • Easily Forgiven: When she apologizes to Bancho for her review years ago, Bancho forgives her as everyone has different views on things.
  • Foil: To Vincent Yamaoka; while both are Caustic Critics that hold somewhat elitist views on cooking, Vincent holds off final judgment until he's actually tasted the food and is more than happy to admit when he's wrong and give out Constructive Criticism on presentation and serving. Lois, by contrast, judges primarily on appearance alone and it takes some badgering before she tries something that might change her views.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Upon actually trying out Bancho's cooking she realizes that she's been far too close-minded as a critic and makes amends with him. She then helps him set up a Branch Restaurant.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Her awful rating of Dugong Hotel actually led to her being criticized and having her popularity decline. Even her comeback in movies isn't doing well.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: One of her biggest flaws is rejecting food because of its presentation without bothering to actually try it out like with the roasted Shark Head at the Dugong Hotel. Once she actually does try it out, she realizes that she was prejudiced.
  • Picky Eater: Lois has a reputation for rejecting food for the slightest of infractions, and reportedly put many restaurants out of business because they served her something she didn't like. The Dugong Hotel incident saw her reject Bancho's whole roasted shark head on sight (despite the audience having seen first hand that it's delicious) and smearing the hotel in response, and even in the modern day it takes a lot of effort to get Lois to try Bancho's cooking. It only takes up to Pastro losing and Vincent telling him about what made Bancho's dish more superior and that her father is his sensei is when she tries it.

Sea People

    In General
Tibetian-like merfolk who live at the very bottom of the Blue Hole.
  • Fantastic Racism: They're initially distrusting of humans due to a misunderstanding in the past. The Sea People gifted Divine Tree fruit to the humans, which turned out to be toxic to them. This caused humans to hunt down and kill Sea People in revenge, and the bad blood stuck to the current day.
  • Fish People: Although partially human in appearance, there's an implication that they're fish who evolved into a form more similar to land dwellers due to the shining fruits which provided extra energy and warmth to them in a place where other species were less nourished, much like the land provides more energy to those who dwell on it (particularly predators and omnivores) than the sea does to its denizens.
  • Human Outside, Alien Inside: Although their upper halves appear human, they can digest ground coral made into porridge (which in fact seems to have a potent restorative effect) and the fruits which provide them with warmth and nourishment are poisonous to humans.
  • Long-Lived: Suwam mentions that Sea People can live for 300 years.
  • Lost Technology: In the past, they used to have technology far superior to humans, powered by the fruit of the Divine Tree. Dave does encounter much of their technology through the game, such as light emitters that can easily melt ice in seconds. While Duff's weaponry is capable of hurting Yawie, it's ultimately one of the Sea People's ancient tech that permanently does her in.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: They're merfolk with a Tibetan theme and culture. Their upper halves look almost indistinguishable from humans', save for a "collar" of pink gills/fins around their necks. They can also glow with magical light, which acts in the same manner as UV light and can repel tubeworms when the Sea People approach.

    Ramo

Ramo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_29_56_ramowebp_webp_image_295_456_pixels_7.png
Princess of the Sea People and the first of their kind Dave encounters. Dave rescues her on accident while fighting the giant squid, and has to help her get back to her village after she is injured.
  • The Chief's Daughter: She's the daughter of Tenzhin, who isn't explicitly called a king like King Long but is the head of authority of the Sea People village. Dave rescuing her gives him enough of an in with Tenzhin that he's willing to accept his help.
  • Damsel in Distress: Ramo is captured by the giant squid in her first appearance, and the injuries she sustained from that encounter mean that Dave has to make her a porridge to heal her and carry her back home.
  • Equippable Ally: Dave has to physically carry her back to the Sea People village. When being carried, Ramo emits a magical light that allows Dave to pass through tunnels filled with tube worms without using an UV lamp.
  • Nice Girl: Though a bit bossy at first, Ramo is grateful for Dave's help and vouches for him when he's brought before her father Tenzhin.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She is the princess of the Sea People and she doesn't immediately see Dave, a human, as an enemy seeing how he did try to help her. She's the one who initially pushes her father to cooperate with Dave to solve the various crises plaguing the Sea People.
    • When the beluga goes missing, Awang and Nawang assumes Dave hid it, but Ramo sternly tells them to find the beluga instead of agreeing with them.
    • She joins her father and the guards in assisting Dave against Yawie, helping to hold the ancient laser in place while the beast is pinned so Dave can land the finishing blow.

    Suwam

Suwam

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_30_17_suwamwebp_webp_image_389_462_pixels.png
Self-proclaimed strongest warrior among the Sea People, Suwam is the personal guard of Ramo who is... not very good at his job.
  • Cowardly Lion: Suwam is not a great bodyguard and will run at the first sign of trouble, but when the moment calls for it he will step up and prove himself as seen in the encounter with the Giant Gadon.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Of all the Sea People, it takes Suwam the longest to warm up to Dave, mainly because he is jealous of the attention Dave gets and fears Dave might somehow supplant him. However, he is also the one Sea Person who helps Dave out the most, rescuing him from the Giant Gadon and helping Dave open the entrance to the caverns leading to the roots of the Divine Tree, and does come to appreciate Dave in his own way.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: More of "Coward has a point", but his advice to Dave about the Gadon is right — that the best way to fight them is... not to encounter them in the first place. Considering the Gadon are practically invulnerable Instakill Mooks, this advice holds a lot of weight.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Suwam may talk big about his strength, but when danger actually comes he's one of the first to run and hide and wait until Dave sorts out the problem. However, he is also the one to save Dave from the giant Gadon, and he's playable for a particular segment, so there might be some truth behind his boasting.
  • Punny Name: His name seems to come from "swum" and/or "swam".

    Tenzhin

Tenzhin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_30_37_tenzhinwebp_webp_image_496_505_pixels.png
Current chief of the Sea People and Ramo's father. Tenzhin is initially reluctant to trust Dave, but after Ramo vouches for him he allows Dave a chance to prove himself to the Sea People.
  • Mr. Exposition: After Dave wins the Sea People over, Tenzhin gives him all the backstory needed about the Sea People, the Gadon, and the threats to the Divine Tree that are plaguing his people.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Though he's initially wary of Dave, the fact that he saved Ramo makes him suggest that Dave make friends with the rest of the village, since he can't act if they're scared of him. After Dave ingratiates himself, King Tenzhin is an ally for the rest of the game and does all he can to work with Dave to solve the earthquake problem. He also leads a small group of Sea People to help Dave against Yawie, and together they aim the ancient laser while Dave loads it and delivers the final blow to the beast.
  • You Are Fat: An unintended version. He initially mistakes Dave for a "blue manatee", causing Dave to make an annoyed face in silence.

    Mima

Mima

A kindly Sea Person who runs the local cafe. Her dumplings are second to none and can provide Dave with boosts (once she modifies them to let humans eat them).
  • Chubby Chef: She's rather portly and the chubbiest of the Sea People, but her cooking skills are unmatched by anyone outside of Bancho Sushi.
  • Nice Girl: She's one of the first Sea People to accept Dave pretty easily.
  • Supreme Chef: The undersea counterpart to Bancho, in a way, though she seems more inclined to use traditional ingredients than him. Nonetheless, she pushes boundaries in her own way, such as modifying Sea People dumplings so Dave, a human, can eat them. And her dumplings are so delicious, they can give Dave temporary stat boosts.

    Gumo

Gumo

A seaweed farmer who takes a bit of time to warm up to Dave till he gives him Bancho's food that changes his mind, allowing Dave to grow a seaweed farm.
  • Green Thumb: If it's seaweed, he can grow it to much higher quality than the wild seaweed Dave can harvest on his dives.

    Awang and Nawang

Awang and Nawang

The two guards who guard the entrance of the Sea People's Village. They of all the Sea People are the least trusting of Dave and always think he's up to something devious, much to Dave's annoyance.
  • Police Are Useless: Guards in this case, but when they try to go down the Glacier Passage to find the beluga, they find the temperature of the passage to be really cold and can't enter inside, to which Dave points out they're useless and has to find the beluga himself. Even Suwam swam in the Glacier Passage to help Dave and had no problem with the temperature!

    King Long

King Long

A mythical ancient king of the Sea People, who long ago gave his life to stop a potentially civilization-ending threat. There's a statue of him in their village, and he's depicted in much of their art.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He managed to seal away the Gadon from the Sea People, but suffered severe injuries in doing so and succumbed to them.
  • Our Founder: King Long was the ancient ruler of the Sea People in their heyday, and is remembered in their artwork and mythology, most prominently by a giant triumphant staue of him which serves as the centerpiece of the Sea People Village.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He was capable of capturing the Gadon and sealing them away in the Abandoned Cave. These same Gadon are invulnerable to modern weaponry and can effortlessly overpower a normal human, which is a further testament to the King's capability.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Of the "ancient mythological ass-kicking" variety. King Long is forever immortalized by the Sea People for his countless acts of semi-divine altruism and his sealing away of the Gadon.

Enemies

    John Watson

John Watson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_02_18_at_14_29_25_john_watsonwebp_webp_image_678_537_pixels.png
The leader of Sea Blue, an environmental protection group that operates near the Blue Hole. Watson is an aggressive, unhinged Knight Templar who has developed a grudge against Dave, attacking Dave several times in his efforts to stop what he sees as Dave's harmful exploitation of the sea.
  • Death by Irony: He's an eco-terrorist who claims to be all about protecting the ocean and its life, and he ultimately ends up getting killed by a massive ocean creature.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Dave is a friendly guy who generally takes only a few fish and resources from the Blue Hole (which resets itself every time he exits, so he can't leave any lasting ecological damage). Watson's response to this? Try to murder him with military-grade hardware time and time again. Dave even comments that Watson should have more issues with larger fisheries rather than him if he's so concerned about ecological impact. Sea Blue is then revealed to be a front for a massive, unethical fishery operating in the area, and Watson's antagonism was to drive out a perceived competitor... which still doesn't warrant the use of military-grade weapons.
  • Eco-Terrorist: Watson may talk big about protecting the ocean, but in the end he's just a thug who uses extreme measures to attack and harass small-time fishermen and cares little for collateral damage. It then turns out that Sea Blue is a front for a group of Evil Poachers, which means he's really an Ecocidal Antagonist.
  • Evil Gloating: In his third boss fight, Watson begins gloating about how his mini-sub makes him impervious to Dave's guns and harpoon, and how he's going to enjoy killing Dave and putting a stop to his "evil" once and for all. Unfortunately for Watson, he's killed by a Kronosaurus immediately afterward.
  • The Heavy: Watson himself is completely unrelated to the overarching plot regarding the earthquakes, the Divine Tree and Yawie, but he's the most pressing and persistent antagonist towards Dave for much of the game.
  • He Knows Too Much: In his final battle, one of the reasons he tries to kill Dave is that since he now knows Sea Blue is a front for dolphin hunting, he can't live to tell the tale.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: In his final boss fight, he attacks Dave in an armored submersible; Dave's harpoon and guns cannot damage the submersible, and after dodging for a little Watson takes some time to gloat over his impending victory against Dave. Fortunately for Dave, a Kronosaurus chooses that moment to break through some nearby rubble and smash Watson's sub, killing him. Unfortunately for Dave, the Kronosaurus turns its attention to him next, starting the real boss fight.
  • Hypocrite: Watson accuses Dave of destroying the ecological makeup of the Blue Hole despite bombing the reef with a grenade launcher in their first fight, something that Dave is quick to point out. His hypocrisy is made even worse when it's revealed that Sea Blue is a front for a massive dolphin slaughter operation in the area, cetaceans (barring the narwhal) being one of the few animals Dave cannot attack under any circumstances.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: The missiles he programs to directly seek a target do so even if said target is behind him, resulting in him getting hit by his own missiles. In fact, moving behind him is easier for those than playing Tennis Boss with him.
  • Misguided Missile: The homing missiles he fires in the second fight can be lured to hit him instead, allowing Dave to damage him.
  • Near-Villain Victory: In the final battle against him, he has Dave on the ropes due to his submarine being impervious to any of Dave's weapons. He's about to unleash a powerful attack to end Dave right as a Kronosaurus bursts out of the rubble and destroys his submarine, killing him.
  • Never My Fault: In his first fight, he blames Dave for the destruction of the reef that John himself caused via his explosive weapons.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • In his second fight, his missile destroys the door to the Abandoned Cave and traps the opening in rubble, accidentally helping to seal the Gadon (which had escaped from their confinement cells due to the earthquake) inside forever.
    • The missile-launching submarine he brings into his third fight gets destroyed by a Kronosaurus and drops its launcher for Dave to use, which proves to be a handy weapon against the boss.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: He may take his surname from Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace and founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Sea Blue is, after all, a nasty subversion of both groups, and Sea Shepherd in particular has something of an Eco-Terrorist reputation.
  • Powered Armor: His first and second fights involve him fighting Dave in one of these outfitted with deadly missiles and extending claws.
  • Recurring Boss: Watson is fought three times over the course of the story, though only the first two are legitimate boss fights; the third is set up as a Hopeless Boss Fight until Watson is killed by a Kronosaurus.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: The second fight against him has him in a diving suit that's impervious to your attacks. However, his Homing Projectile bomb and his minefield attacks can be sent/guided back to him to explode and damage him — if he only used his charging and punch attacks, he'd be all but invulnerable.
  • Tennis Boss: In his second fight, Dave conveniently finds a baseball bat in the arena capable of sending the missles John shoots right back at him during a certain window.
  • Trick Boss: The third and final fight against him is set up as a Hopeless Boss Fight where Dave has to survive his attacks for a while. John then starts gloating, right before a Kronosaurus chomps down on his submarine and chucks it into a structure, before turning its attention to Dave and becoming the real boss.

    Dasche

Dasche

An ancient Sea Person who decided to experiment with the Divine Tree's fruits in order to make their people stronger. It had disastrous consequences.
  • Ambiguous Situation: There are hints from its clothing that the Giant Gadon encountered in the Glacial Passage is actually Dasche himself, but it's never something explicitly confirmed by the story.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He was the senior technician of the ancient Sea People, the one behind the horrifying Gadons as well as the creation of Yawie, who caused the weakening of the Sea People's Divine Tree, the earthquakes, and the berserk wildlife in the Blue Hole.
  • Mad Scientist: Well, Mad Technician, but close enough.
  • Playing with Syringes: Performed secret experiments on Sea People with Divine Tree fruit to make them into super-strong workers. While it did work initially, those enhanced soon turned violent and became the Gadon.
  • Super Serum: His infusion of the Divine Tree fruit into the Sea People was intended to be this, making the infused Sea People much stronger and more productive at work. It turned out to be a Psycho Serum as the infused soon went insanely violent.

    Gadon

The Gadon

Mutant Sea People created after a Mad Scientist among their number, Dasche, conducted experiments on them using the fruit of the Divine Tree. After a civil war they were driven into the icy caverns within the ocean's depths and presumed to have gone extinct, but Dave's exploration reveals that they aren't quite as dead as everyone thought.
  • Ax-Crazy: They're violent enough to attack anything they come across that isn't another Gadon.
  • Blinded by the Light: The Gadon's only weakness is light from the Divine Tree fruits, which will stun them for a few moments when struck and allow Dave a chance to escape.
  • Body Horror: Tenzhin mentions that the Gadon's skin turned pale and their limbs twisted as the infusion of the Divine Tree fruit took effect.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Dasche's experiments with Divine Tree Fruit on the ancient Sea People did give those infused the enhanced physiology that was intended. However, the infused soon became pale, twisted, and incredibly violent, turning into the Gadon.
  • Immune to Bullets: Dave cannot harm them in any way, leaving his only options to run away or hide until they pass by.
  • Instakill Mook: Gadons will cause a guaranteed Game Over should they catch Dave, without any escape prompt to save himself. As Dave's weapons are completely ineffective against them, his only options are to hide or run from them.
  • Invincible Boogeymen: They can't be killed at all as weapons are useless against them, and they One-Hit Kill you. The only way to get past them is using stealth or stunning them with Divine Tree fruit.
  • Long-Lived: Even more so than the Sea People. Suwam initially expects the Gadon locked in the Abandoned Cave about a thousand years ago to have died, since Sea People have an average lifespan on 300 years. Dave learns to his horror that the Gadon in there are still alive.
  • Mutant: They're superhumanly strong, durable and violent mutant Sea People created after an Divine Tree Fruit infusion to make them stronger went horribly right.
  • Run or Die: The Gadon are Immune to Bullets and cannot be damaged by Dave's harpoon, and will instakill Dave should they catch him. Dave's only options are to run or hide from them until they move on. Even resident coward Suwam is right when he mentions that the best way to deal with them is to not encounter them at all.
  • Technically-Living Zombie: Even though they're actually mutants and not zombies, the Gadon act much more like the latter, violently attacking and eating living things they come across while looking emaciated and sporting an Undeathly Pallor.

Giant Gadon

A colossal Gadon Dave encounters chained up in the final stretch of the Glacial Passage. After accidentally freeing it, he manages to narrowly escape it with the help of Suwam, crushing it under a pile of rubble and hopefully killing it.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: Since it can't be hurt by conventional weaponry, the entire "fight" against it consists of Dave desperately trying to escape from it while dodging other obstacles.
  • Ambiguous Situation: There are hints from its clothing that the Giant Gadon is actually Technician Dasche himself, but it's never something explicitly confirmed by the story.
  • And I Must Scream: If the rubble it gets crushed under didn't kill it due to it being a Nigh-Invulnerable Gadon, then the sheer weight of it all is keeping it permanently immobilized underneath there while it's still fully conscious.
  • Dead-Hand Shot: As it gets crushed, the only part of it that remains visible is its gigantic grasping hand. It remains a permanent part of the scenery every time you enter the Glacial Area.
  • Eye Scream: One of its eyesockets is completely encrusted over with barnacles.
  • King Mook: It's at least ten times larger than any other Gadon, and is not so concidentally the chronologically last one you'll face.
  • Implacable Man: The Giant Gadon is relentlessly chasing Dave despite everything he throws in its path (which would knock out or straight-up kill a lot of the other boss creatures in the game) until the very end where Suwam manages to rescue Dave in time and the rocks collapse, taking it down.
  • One-Hit Kill: If the Giant Gadon manages to grab Dave with any of its attacks, it's an instant Game Over.
  • Level in Boss Clothing: The fight against it is really a flowing-current obstacle course similar to others found throught the game, but with the added danger that you can't drift too far to the right to give yourself some room to dodge incoming obstacles or you'll expose yourself to the Giant Gadon's wild swipes.
  • Press X to Not Die: Several QTEs occur throughout the fight to keep the tension high as Dave dodges the giant Gadon's flailing, and the chase sequence is capped off with Dave stunning the Giant Gadon by hitting a Divine Tree Fruit with his diving knife using a similar QTE to the one employed by the riposte attack you can only do on Tiger Sharks.

Sea Monsters

    Giant Squid

Giant Squid

A Giant Squid that sinks a delivery boat carrying Duff's figurine and steals said figurine. Dave has to defeat it to retrieve the figurine.
  • Giant Squid: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. It's a squid that's far bigger than any known species of giant squid.
  • Go for the Eye: Its weak spot is its giant eye. When it Turns Red, it starts using its tentacle to cover it, forcing Dave to lure it into attacking to leave itself vulnerable.
  • Starter Villain: The first boss that Dave encounters in the game.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: Once it Turns Red, it will use a tentacle to cover its eye from damage. However, if Dave gets near it, it will use the same tentacle to swat at him, leaving itself open.

    Clione Queen

Clione Queen

An optional boss and the key to finding out about Maki's Dad. She'll join you as a chef once you beat this boss but it won't be easy.

    Truck Hermit Crab

Truck Hermit Crab

The first powerful creature that Sato tips Dave off to during his dives. The Truck Hermit Crab will appear on a stormy night after Dave has unlocked night diving.
  • Collapsing Ceiling Boss: A number of its attacks cause debris to rain from the ceiling.
  • Optional Boss: It's not required to defeat it to progress the story.
  • Paper Tiger: It's quick to retreat once its truck shell is gone. Dave even lampshades it:
Dave: That thing was really nothing without the shell.
  • Puzzle Boss: The crab itself is immune to damage, although shooting its eyes will cause it to temporarily retract under its shell. In order to truly defeat it, Dave needs to drop exploding barrels onto its truck shell until it's destroyed, after which the crab retreats.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: One of the few bosses that survives its fight, as it retreats under the sand once its truck shell is destroyed.

    Mantis Shrimp

Mantis Shrimp

The second powerful creature that Sato tips Dave off to during his dives. The Mantis Shrimp will appear on a stormy night after Dave has unlocked night diving and defeating the Truck Hermit Crab.
  • Attack Backfire: Its wind-up punch can be countered by lifting the metal pulley weight, causing it to punch the weight, hurt its foreleg, and leave its eyes open as it reels from the pain.
  • Boxing Battler: Par the course for a giant Mantis Shrimp, it attacks Dave with its club-like forelimbs and even takes on boxing stances. They hurt just as much as several other attacks from giant sea creatures.
  • Go for the Eye: Its weak points are its eyes, but it will use its "fists" to block them from attacks.
  • Optional Boss: It's not required to defeat it to progress the story.

    Klaus

Great White Shark Klaus

A Great White Shark that arrives at the Giant Blue Hole on a stormy day after Dave has defeated the Hermit Crab and the Mantis Shrimp. Klaus is a vicious predator that has killed other divers in the past, and Dave is recruited by the former wife of one such victim to end the shark's reign of terror once and for all.
  • Animal Nemesis: He's the archnemesis of Clara, who has dedicated her life to hunting him down. She's the one who ultimately gets the finishing blow on him.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Klaus has a jagged, cross-shaped scar on his back, and is one of the more aggressive beasts Dave has to fight during his adventure.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Klaus is fast, eats bullets like candy, and all of his attacks pack quite a punch; unprepared players can easily be overwhelmed by the variety of attacks Klaus can unleash on them, and it requires some serious upgrades to put him down.
  • Optional Boss: It's not required to defeat him to progress the story.
  • Threatening Shark: Klaus is the biggest and most aggressive of the sharks Dave encounters during his dives, and is considered one of the toughest boss fights in the game.
  • Tornado Move: He's capable of generating damaging whirlpools projectiles by swinging his tail. These are initially not very hard to avoid, but when he Turns Red they zigzag and cover a deceptively wide area.

    Goblin Shark

Goblin Shark

A massive deep-sea shark which serves as an Optional Boss.
  • Animals Not to Scale: Goblin Sharks do not grown anywhere near as large as the one portrayed here.
  • Threatening Shark: Like many other sharks in the game, the Goblin Shark attacks Dave on sight.

    Phantom Jellyfish
A gigantic jellyfish Dave encounters while riding the Sea People's beluga through the Second Glacial Cave, guarding the second Divine Tree Control Room switch.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Dave must use the beluga's ram attack on it glowing red eye-appendage in order to damage it.

    Helicoprion

Helicoprion

A fiendishly scary-looking prehistoric whorl-toothed shark that Dave and Suwam encounter in the Third Glacial Cave, guarding the final switch they need to flip to open the Divine Tree Control Room.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Its tooth whorl is capable of slicing Dave to ribbons and chewing through solid stone in seconds.
  • Animals Not to Scale: Zig-zagged. While Helicoprion is a family of sharks and not a single species (so there's at least plausibility this is an undiscovered huge variant), the one in-game massively exceeds anything suggested by fossil evidence and is similar in size to Great White Shark Klaus.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology: The Helicoprion's tooth whorl is portrayed as a literal buzzsaw (complete with electric saw sound effects) capable of rotating and cutting through solid stone, when in real life it was a fixed structure of teeth no more sharp than any other species of shark.
  • Easy Level Trick: Suwam hides as per usual during the fight, but you can still control him enough to use him to hit some nearby Divine Tree Fruit, stunning the Helicoprion if it's close to them since it's not used to bright light this deep underwater. The amount of time it's stunned for means Dave can wail on it risk-free, and just one or two rounds of stunning it will likely secure the kill if your equipment is good enough.
  • Threatening Shark: Like many other sharks in the game, the Helicoprion attacks Dave and Suwam on sight.

    Kronosaurus

Giant Kronosaurus

One of the denizens of the deepest parts of the Blue Hole. The Kronosaurus is awakened by Dave's fight with John Watson, rising up to kill the eco-terrorist before turning its sights on Dave.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: John Watson's submarine is practically invulnerable to both Dave's and its own weapons, but the Kronosaurus effortlessly wrecks the thing like it was a chew toy.
  • Breath Weapon: The Kronosaurus can somehow shoot beams of fire from its mouth.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: It's a marine reptile, not a dinosaur, but it is a fire-breathing Sea Monster that menaces Dave when it is awakened by his fight with John Watson.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Chooses to target and dispose of John Watson who had Dave on the ropes, saving Dave from a Hopeless Boss Fight and causing a missile launcher to drop from John's sub, which comes in handy for Dave as a weapon.
  • Prehistoric Monster: It's a marine reptile that survived to the modern day, and is both hyper aggressive and has a fiery Breath Weapon.

    Yawie (FINAL BOSS SPOILERS

Yawie

An ancient enemy of the Sea People and yet another one of Dasche's experiments gone wrong, Yawie is a gigantic Anomalocaris that lives in the volcano that supplies heat to the Divine Tree. Long thought dead, she has awakened and started gnawing at the Tree's roots, causing the frequent earthquakes in the area and threatening the Sea People's way of life.
  • Atrocious Arthropods: Yawie is an Anomalocaris, an extinct arthropod considered to be one of Earth's first apex predators when it was alive. She is also far bigger than the real thing was, and is hostile to Dave and the Sea People.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Obviously Anomalocaris did not grow to the size of a semi truck and did not have (as far as we are aware) the ability to shoot fire from its mouth. Justified, as Yawie has been augmented by Dasche's experiments and is stated to have grown much larger than normal over the centuries.
  • Big Bad: Yawie is responsible for the earthquakes that damaged Bancho Sushi and the Giant Blue Hole, and is the one responsible for the gradual weakening of the Divine Tree that threatens the Sea People with extinction.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Dave and the Sea People finish Yawie off with a gigantic Sea People laser using one of the Divine Tree fruits, blowing her head wide open when she's stuck and defenseless.
  • Breath Weapon: Like the Kronosaurus, Yawie can fire a beam of fire from her mouth.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Yawie isn't a dinosaur or even a reptile, being a gigantic arthropod, but she's a member of a prehistoric species who lives in lava and breathes fire when attacking Dave. On top of that, her role in the story is similar to that of Níðhögg, the dragon that chews on the roots of the World Tree.
  • Final Boss: Yawie and her brood are the last enemies Dave fights in the main storyline.
  • Mother of a Thousand Young: Dave doesn't just have to fight Yawie, but also her hordes of babies that feed on the Divine Tree roots as well.
  • Not Using the "Z" Word: Every other animal in the game is given its correct species name, especially the other prehistoric creatures in the Hydrothermal Vents. Yawie, despite obviously being an Anomalocaris, is only every referred to using terms like "a strange ancient creature", even by characters like Dr. Bacon.
  • Olympus Mons: Judging by Sato's surprised reaction of Yawie's Marinca card in the ending, she's definitely the strongest of the boss cards.
  • Prehistoric Monster: She's a prehistoric animal and she is much larger and more monstrous than a normal Anomalocaris.
  • Sea Monster: Yawie is one of the only creatures in the game to really qualify, being a titanic fire-breathing Anomalocaris living in the far depths of the ocean.
  • Shout-Out: It's a giant Sea Monster fought in the style of a Shoot 'Em Up game, bringing to mind the Darius series and especially the boss Accordion Hazard, who's a giant mechancial Anomalocaris.
  • Unexpected Shmup Level: Dave is given a weaponized drone to fight this thing in Shoot 'Em Up style, completely departing from the slow and deliberate movement of the other boss fights in favor of a foll-on Bullet Hell.
  • Walking Spoiler: Yawie is mentioned shortly after meeting the Sea People, but doesn't make an appearance until the final act of the game, so much about her is shrouded in mystery until Dave enters the final chamber beneath the Divine Tree.
  • Weaponized Offspring: A few of her attacks have her fire her own offspring at Dave.

    Lusca (SPOILERS FOR COMPLETING MARINCA

Lusca

A great white shark/octopus hybrid creature from Caribbean mythology that Sato tips Dave off to during his dives after the rest of the Marinca collection is complete.
  • Alpha Strike: After it Turns Red, it will crawl onto the wall of its chamer and rear back before lunging at Dave for a supremely damaging chomp. This move can be a One-Hit Kill if you're not prepared, but it also doesn't do it for the rest of the fight.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Dave can do extra damage to it while it's doing certain attacks which expose its soft and fleshy octopus backside.
  • Blow You Away: It can whip air currents at Dave as if they were boomerangs using its many tentacles. However, these moves also expose its soft underside.
  • Damage-Sponge Boss: Has a lot more health than any of the other Optional Boss fights.
  • Combat Tentacles: Not only can Lusca use them to whip Dave, all of them can shoot projectiles of various types.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: It's part Great White Shark and part giant octopus. After its defeat, Dave is excited to get both shark and octopus parts from it, which provides two new Boss Dishes.
  • Tentacled Terror: The rear half of Lusca is a giant Octopus' tentacles.
  • Threatening Shark: The front half of Lusca is a Great White Shark.
  • Sea Monster: A creature for which it is unambiguously impossible to exist in real life, Lusca is a gigantic undersea monstrosity based off of a creature from myths originating from the Caribbean islands.
  • Shout-Out: It's based on the mythological Lusca. However, considering that Dave calls it "something you'd see in a low-budget monster film", it's also one to the eponymous Sharktopus.
  • Status Infliction Attack: It can shoot out projectiles from its tentacles which can apply every status effect in the game onto Dave, so avoiding them is key.
  • Superboss: It can only be encountered after all the other bosses are defeated, including Yawie, and it's intended to basically be the absolute final challenge of your playthrough, with stats to match.
