    Lexus LFA
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lexus_lfa.jpg

"I usually kill traction control. But in this car, it definitely feels faster with the traction control on. … I like that feeling of walking that line, getting into that edge."

Perhaps it's Japan's first exotic supercar, that took 5 years to develop.

The LFA (short for Lexus Future Advance) is Lexus's two seater supercar manufactured from 2010 to 2012, and it is the first standalone F-series model, the first of the LF lineup and the brand's first ever supercar.

Development for the LFA dates all the way back during the start of the Turn of the Millennium when both Toyota and Lexus intend to produce a supercar to showcase its performance and aerodynamic capabilities. The first Super Prototype was finished in 2003, and underwent numerous tests around the Nürburgring where the car was equipped with a retractable rear spoiler and carbon ceramic brake discs.

The LF-A was finally introduced to the world on January 2005 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, despite having no plans for production. The car was designed in collaboration between Toyota and Italian designer Leonardo Fioravanti. Notable features of the car other than its retractable spoiler is its twin rear radiators, turbine shaped wheels and mostly its triple exhaust placed in an upside-down triangle position. Rumors say it was green-lit for production, though reports stated it was not officially confirmed.

The second concept was introduced in 2007, with a much more restyled body, a more aerodynamic exterior and having a fully-functional interior. The car had plans of utilizing a V10 and a hybrid engine. The following year, a roadster variant of the concept was unveiled.

On August 5, 2009, Toyota officially confirmed that the LFA will go into production, where it's expected it will carry V10 engines. The car was officially unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show and it would also mark as part of Lexus's 20th anniversary. Under the hood is a 4.8 L even-firing V10 engine, producing 553-563 hp, and the car's body made fully of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer. As for performance, the car accelerates 0-62 in 3.7 seconds and can reach 326 km/h (203 mph).

The LFA officially ended in December 2012 with exactly 500 cars produces, with the final car being the track-focused LFA Nürburgring Package/Edition.

Anime and Manga
  • The anime adaptation of Dimension W exchanges Kyoma Mabuchi's vintage-loving Toyota 2000GT for a modern-day supercar; a while Lexus LFA.
  • The "supercar" that Chisato sees in Episode 2 of Lycoris Recoil is a red Lexus LFA. It's no wonder she wanted to drive it, and then went all mopey afterwards when Walnut shows up in a much less extravagant white hatchback and they have to leave the Lexus behind.
Chisato: WOOOAAAH! IT'S A SUPERCAAAR!! CHECK IT OUT!! AMAZING!
Takina: A car like that stands out.
Chisato: I'm sorry, but I GOTTA DRIVE THAT THING!
(A moment later just as they drive away)
Chisato: (To Walnut) Hey, hold on! You're gonna leave the supercar here!? (Smash Cut) But I wanna ride in the supercaaaaaar!

    Toyota 2000GT
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toyota_2000gt.jpg

"Toyota went from 'Toyopet' to... 'Toyo-Porsche beater' in about as long as it takes to make an update to a 911."
Jason Cammisa, Hagerty

Japan's answer to the Porsche 911.

This Japanese sports car was considered to be one of Toyota's gemstone at its time in The '60s, which would be the kickstarter of bringing sports car industry to the country. The 2000GT was designed in collaboration with Yamaha, with its sleek fastback coupe design to it top-notch performance, worthy enough to rival with European sports cars.

Road & Track magazine summed up the 2000GT as "one of the most exciting and enjoyable cars we've driven", as this collectible car is considered to be both as the brand's "halo car" and arguably as "Japan's first supercar".

The 2000GT name would later be reused for TRD's tuned variant of the Toyota MR2 (SW20).

Film—Live Action

  • The most famous appearance of the 2000GT is in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, where it is exclusively in open-top form (it was never supposed to be a convertible, but it got converted into one due to Sean Connery's height), driven by Bond Girl" Aki, played by Akiko Wakabayashi. Later Bond actor Daniel Craig voted this car as his favorite Bond car of all-time.

    Toyota AE86/Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0203110405_5893e515ab524.jpg
For all your tofu delivery needs.

"If it has all four tires and gets you from point A to point B, then it's a car."
Takumi Fujiwara, Initial D

Nicknamed the "Hachi-Roku", the AE86 is a small and lightweight front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports coupe of Toyota, introduced in 1983 as part of the fifth generation Toyota Corolla line up. It both comes in either a 2-door coupe or 3-door liftback configuration.

During its production, the AE86 became much more prominent in motorsports, such as rallying and circuit racing. Its rear-wheel drive and its lightweight body made the AE86 a popular choice for drifting, in which Japanese legend Keiichi Tsuchiya helped popularize and pioneered this discipline. As a result, the AE86 has been extensively modified and commonly used in professional drifting from all over the world.

Oh, and if you exceed 100 km/h in this car, it will trigger a speed chime that warns you that you are speeding.

Anime and Manga
  • Perhaps this car is widely well known in Initial D, where the AE86 plays in the series:
    • The series's protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara drives a panda-white AE86 Trueno with Watanabe rims, Cibié fog lamps and the iconic Fujiwara Tofu Shop sticker. Though intended to be as a tofu delivery car, it's instilled with advanced driving techniques that allowed Takumi to use his skills at and despite its unassuming appearance, it manages to beat all rivals he has faced and attained a perfect win ratio. In Second Stage, the 86's engine was blown up during a battle against Kyoichi Sudo in Akagi, prompting a Mid-Season Upgrade with a new but powerful engine.
    • Wataru Akiyama on the other hand drives a white zenki-model AE86 Corolla Levin. Originally, his Corolla is turbocharged before his engine broke down, resulting in Wataru fitting an brand new supercharged one.
    • The Akina SpeedStars member and resident Butt-Monkey, Itsuki Takeuchi insists of buying an AE86 Levin, but accidentally buys a AE85 Levin instead. Following his plans for work life, Itsuki uses his pay check to purchase a turbocharger, making it much as a Lethal Joke Car.
    • In Fifth Stage, a Takumi impersonator of the fake Project D team drives a late-model Trueno that obviously doesn't look like the one of the real Takumi. The car was never seen racing in neither the anime nor manga, but you get to battle him in Initial D Arcade Stage.
    • Shinji Inui, a member of Sidewinder and the Final Boss Takumi has faced in the series, drives a 2-door notchback Trueno which belonged to his late father. When not racing, Shinji acts as The Driver for his mother as the said Trueno is used as a transport car to drive her through the Tsubaki Line.
  • ...and with Initial D's growing popularity has spawned lots of spoofs and parodies with this iconic tofu drifting car:
    • As a Shout-Out of the aformentioned Initial D, Hachiya Rokoku a.k.a. Detective Hachiroku at the beginning of episode 4 of Miami Guns is a blatant parody of Takumi Fujiwara. He drives an AE86 police car and he's not afraid of pulling insane drifting techniques whilst chasing down a crook in a blue Evo III.
    • Another Shout-Out has Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter which spoofs the hell outta Initial D as Yuzuru-86 drives an AE86 Sprinter Trueno with a sticker parodying Fujiwara Tofu Shop's on the right door.

Film — Live-Action

Video Games

  • In Battle Gear 2, both the Trueno and Levin are available in the game. The bonus Trueno Mecha Tune and Levin Turbo Tune are a Shout-Out to the cars of Takumi Fujiwara and Wataru Akiyama respectively. Additionally, the Joke Cars AE85 Levin SR and Trueno SR is included in the Toyota lineup as well.
  • The 2006 PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable release of The Fast and the Furious has a team called "Kansai" where the members are all references of Initial D. Hiroto is a blatant Takumi Fujiwara Expy who drives a near-identical AE86 Sprinter Trueno, where Katsuhiro drives an AE86 Levin, intended to be like Wataru Akiyama.
  • Gran Turismo, starting with 3 added the Shuichi Shigeno version of the Trueno, a pre-tuned car built for the author who did Initial D.
    • In Sport, both the Corolla Levin and the Sprinter Trueno's speed chime were fully utilized, as well as using a digital tachometer. In 7, both cars will resemble the TRD N2 body kit if a widebody is fitted.
  • Grand Theft Auto IV onwards feature an AE86 parody with the Punny Name of "Futo".
  • Race Driver: GRiD uses a D1GP spec 2-door Sprinter Trueno note  as one of the Drift class cars.
  • Horizon Chase takes this iconic Initial D meme and ascended it, with the Sprinter Trueno aptly dubbed the "Déjà Vu" an its tagline continues...
"I've just been in this place before"
  • Need for Speed:
    • The North American-spec Corolla GT-S debuted in Underground 2 as one of the early starter cars in the game. Despite is slow top speed at stock performance, it makes up for its handling. A fully upgraded Corolla can be a deadly sleeper on straight lines.
    • While it appeared custom bonus car in Carbon, ProStreet on the other hand has this car available for purchse. The Corolla is extremely useful in Drift and Grip races, as well as Wheelie Competition events due to its low weight.
    • In Nitro, Singaporean top racer Zarinah drives a Corolla only during the Bronze Cup.
    • While the Corolla continued to be in Shift, its sequel Shift 2: Unleashed has the special Retro GTX Team Need for Speed Corolla GT-S driven by Irish Formula D driver Darren McNamara. A Works-converted car would resemble the 1999 JGTC GT300 Trueno.
    • The actual JDM-spec Trueno appeared in the 2015 reboot. It's possible to turn the front-end into a Levin with fixed headlights via body customization.
  • Tokyo Xtreme Racer:
    • Rolling Guy, the series' signature team, features an all-AE86 line-up. To team members, passion and loyalty for their cars comes before everything else, to the point of calling a former member who switched cars a "traitor".
    • As fitting for a Takumi Fujiwara Expy, "Lightning Shift" Takuya Hajiwara drives one in almost all of his appearances. The sole exception is in 3, where he's driving a loaned Toyota Starlet after wrecking his AE86 sometime after the events of Zero.

    Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lexus_is_350.jpg

"An FR sports sedan designed for a wide range of generations. Although it lacks power, its sporty turning characteristics make it fun to drive."
Description (translated from Japanese), Battle Gear 4 official website

Japan's answer to the luxury sports sedans produced in leading European luxury marques.

The Lexus IS (stands for "Intelligent Sport") is a series of compact cars introduced in 1998 and sold under the Lexus marque, a luxury division of Toyota. Within Japan, the IS was sold under the name, Toyota Altezza (Italian for 'height' or 'highness'). It was marketed as an-entry level sports model positioned below the ES lineup.

Originally, the Altezza/IS were powered by either an inline-4 or an inline-6 engine, with some differences being the Altezza AS 200/IS 200 being its entry-level car and the Altezza RS200/IS 300 being the performance-level car. It was also offered a 5-door station wagon dubbed as the Altezza Gita and the IS 300 SportCross.

The Altezza name was dropped in 2005 when the Lexus marque was introduced in Japan. For its second-generation IS now utilizes V6 engines instead of inline ones. New to this generation comes sleeker exotic design, coupé-like contours and a more fastback profile. A powerful high-performance variant of the IS was introduced in 2007 as the IS F, utilizing a 5.0 L V8 engine and an 8-speed transmission, a first to ever do so. It was intended to compete with other high-end performance luxury sedans such as the Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, BMW 3-series and the Cadillac CTS.

Following the LF-CC concept in 2012, the third-generation IS was launched in 2013, which included various trims and performance-tuned F-Sport variants.

    Toyota Celica
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toyota_celica.jpg

"I'm not just saying this because we're at a rally event, but Kankkunen (who was invited to the demo run) is Mr. Celica. He was champion four times in the Celica. Now you can all have a think about why I'm using Kankkunen so much. See if you can guess!"
Akio Toyoda, under the Morizo pseudonymn (which he uses as a driver), during the 2023 Rally Hokkaido

The Toyota Celica was produced by Toyota from 1970 until 2006. Produced across seven generations, the Celica was powered by various four-cylinder engines, and bodystyles included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés and notchback coupés. The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica, meaning "heavenly" or "celestial".

In 1973, Toyota coined the term "liftback" to describe the Celica fastback hatchback, using the name Liftback GT for the North American market. Like the Ford Mustang, the Celica concept consisted in attaching a coupe body to the chassis and mechanicals from a high volume sedan, in this case the Toyota Carina, though some journalists thought it was based on the Corona due to some shared mechanical parts.

In 1986, the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was spun off as a separate model, becoming simply the Toyota Supra, which itself would become a a sough-after model in tuning culture. Lightly altered versions of the Celica were also sold as the Corona Coupé in the 1980s and as the Toyota Curren through in the 1990s.

The Celica GT-Four variant is a popular rally icon that competed in the World Rally Championship, where the car saw everlasting success with driver titles won by Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol. However, in the 1995 season, the FIA decided to ban Toyota Team Europe from competing after one race where they found out the team were using illegal turbo restrictors, issuing them a one-year ban. Then-FIA president Max Mosley stated that it is "the most sophisticated device I've ever seen in 30 years of motor sports."

This name has nothing to do with Celica A. Mercury. Obviously, she's not named after the car.

    Toyota MR2/MR-S
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toyota_mr2.jpg
Toyota's Ferrari F355.

"The MR2 is a car that has the midship layout, the FF power train falls directly behing the driver's seat. Because the center of gravity of a midship is located in the centeer of the car's body, it is more responsive than cars with a front layout."
Koichiro Iketani, Iketani-senpai's car information, Initial D Special Stage

Hence the name, the MR2 is Toyota's mid-engine sports car that spans over three generations from 1984 to 2007. The name MR2 stands for "mid-ship run-about 2-seater" or "mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-seater". In France however, it was renamed to simply just the Toyota MR since MR2 in French would sound like "merde" note

Since 1976, it was Toyota's ambition to create a car that was enjoyable to drive and yet still provide reliability and good fuel efficiency, though not necessarily a sports car. Toyota in 1981 unveiled its prototype called the SA-X, where that concept evolved into a fully-fledged production sports car, but at the same time complied with Japanese regulations in regard of exterior dimensions and engine displacement.

Its lifespan can be pinpointed to three generations: the AW11 (essentially a backwards Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno, powered by either a naturally-aspirated 4A-GE or supercharged 4A-GZE engine), the SW20 (a larger platform powered by either a naturally-aspirated 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE engine), and the ZZW30 (at which point its name was changed to MR-S, now exclusively powered by the naturally-aspirated 1ZZ-FE engine).

    Toyota Prius

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toyota_prius.jpg

"I own a Toyota Prius; it's a step in the right direction. It's a gasoline-electric midsize car that gets about 50 miles per gallon. We have the technology to make every car produced in America today just as clean, cheap, and efficient."

The Toyota Prius is a hybrid car introduced in 1997, developed to be the brand's "car for the 21st century". It was the first-ever mass-produced hybrid vehicle, which combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, typically offered in either a four-door sedan of a five-door liftback (introduced in 2003).

Early generations of the Prius encountered lots of Early-Installment Weirdness in terms of bland designs and uninspiring performance, leading to later ones to have more futuristic and aggressive designs in each iteration. In 2011, the Prius has expanded to various types, ssuch as the Prius v (a multi-purpose vehicle) and the Prius c (a subcompact hatchback).

The name Prius is Latin meaning "prior" or "previous", implying that there was never a mass-produced hybrid car prior to it. Toyota asked the United States on which to decide for the proper plural form of Prius (Prien, Prii, Prium, Prius, or Priuses) with Prii being the most popular and thus adopted the plural designation in on February 20, 2011.

Toyota Supra (Mk4 and GR Supra)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toyota_supra_mk4_gr.jpeg
To go beyond.note

Dom: [looking at the Supra being hauled in] I said a ten-second car, not a ten-minute car.
Jesse: You could push this across the finish line, or tow it.
Dom: You couldn't even tow that across the finish line.

The Toyota Supra car was manufactured by Toyota since 1978, being derived from the Toyota Celica (it was in fact sold as the "Toyota Celica Supra" until becoming a separate model in 1986).

Starting in The '90s however, the car underwent a redesign for its fourth generation (model code A80) that saw Toyota placing great emphasis on it becoming a more serious high-performance car. The A80 featured two new engines: a naturally aspirated engine having a power output of 164 kW (220 hp; 223 PS) and 210 lb⋅ft (285 N⋅m), and a twin turbocharged engine with a power output of 206 kW (276 hp; 280 PS) and 318 lb⋅ft (431 N⋅m) of torque for the Japanese model; for export to American/European markets, Toyota added upgrades for the model with the turbocharged engine (like smaller, steel-wheeled turbochargers, bigger fuel injectors, etc.), which increased the power output to 239-243 kW (321-326 hp; 325-330 PS) and 315-325 lb⋅ft (427-441 N⋅m).

By the late 1990s, sales of all sport coupes were declining in North America, and the Supra was withdrawn from the Canadian market in 1996 and the U.S. in 1998, while roduction continued in Japan until August 2002, marking the end of the Supra...

...until 2018, when following rumors through the 2010s, a pre-production version of the Supra with a camouflage was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, before it was officially unveiled at the January 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car was confirmed to be a collaboration between Toyota and BMW with the new BMW Z4 (G29), but that according to Toyota the Supra is intended to be "much more hardcore and track-focused", with Toyota global chief engineer Tetsuya Tada disclosing that the Supra was developed with the idea of benchmarking against the Porsche Cayman S (982), akin to the previous generation Supra's rivalry with the Porsche 968.
