The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? Find a Trope:
openRound-Robin Storytelling
Characters take turns crafting an In-Universe narrative, whether as part of a game or just people randomly butting in on someone else's attempt at storytelling.
openTrapped in a place episode
An episode of a show or some other series that revolves around some characters somehow being trapped in a place, such as a small room, for the majority of the episode.
openHorrible Shrewish Wife
Is there a specific trope for the character archetype of the horrible, shrill-voiced harpy of a wife who's usually seen obsessing over the neighbors/celebrity gossip when she's not chewing out her husband? Usually married to a Henpecked Husband, but sometimes the husband is more assertive, though this doesn't stop the wife from continuously berating him.
For example, the narrator's wife in "Word Processor of the Gods", General Alcazar's wife in Tintin, Aunt Petunia in Harry Potter (downplayed in that she's married to a similarly small-minded man, so they're actually relatively happy), several Discworld characters...
openStay away from me, I’m dangerous!
A character tells people to stay the hell away from them because he/she might hurt them unwillingly (when a Superpowered Evil Side is taking over, for example).
Edited by LyendithopenHands from every direction
A scene where a characters has hands reaching towards them from every direction. The images on NightmareFuel.Labyrinth and NightmareFuel.Sym Bionic Titan actually both illustrate such.
Edited by jandn2014openLate Bloomer Trope? Music
Do we have a Late Bloomer trope? For anyone unfamiliar with the phrase it's someone who achieves success in a field later in life than would be considered normal. For example Sheryl Crow had her first big hit at the age of 29 - not old per se, but considering most musicians who "make it" tend to have their first hit in their late teens or early 20s it's older than normal (possibly because musicians who reach their late 20s without breaking through often transition into regular careers out of necessity). Another example is Billy Bob Thornton who didn't have an acting credit till he was past 40.
opentax dodging
Are there tropes on criminals and corporations dodging taxes aka tax evasion?
openRanked encouragement Videogame
Do we have a trope for a game shouting words when you do certain tasks really poorly/well? Like "Bad," "Good," "Great," Excellent" depending on how well you're doing. Examples: Trauma Center, Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon GO.
openSilk Hiding Steel for objects
What's the object version of Silk Hiding Steel? Armor *and* weapons that look harmless or otherwise 'normal' but aren't?
(E.g., a battle helmet that looks like a mundane baseball cap)
openScary Places index
Is there an index listing common horror settings? Or just generally forbidding places?
openImplied Swear Rhyme
That poem from a cartoon or movie that doesn't rhyme... because the rhyme is a swear. Example: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/i86rrj/as_a_kid_i_always_wondered_why_this_didnt_rhyme/
openTiny Size Reveal
Perspective or camera tricks are used to make something appear huge, but then it is shown that it is actually much smaller. Like Phineas and Ferb has a scene where Doofenshmirtz is presenting his next Inator with the camera being shown from Perry's perspective as a large machine emerges from the ground with a lot of smoke, but then the camera zooms out and shows that the machine only reaches up to Doofenshmirtz's chest compared to how gargantuan it appeared before and he pulls a laser gun out of it.
openOld Questgiver In Tavern [Is Evil]
I've seen this specific scenario (and the "actually evil" followup) a few times so I'm wondering if it's a trope.
The cliché D&D game starts with the adventurers meeting in an inn, where an old man gives them the starting quest (e.g. "kill the goblins in the cave").
The common subversion is that the old man much later turns out to be the Big Bad in disguise (usually an Evil Sorcerer).
Seen in Overlord 2012 (in an In-Universe RPG run by Ainz, by complete accident), the Flash game Dangerous Adventure 2, the Warcraft 3 fanwork Dark Times...
Edited by Chabal2openIncreasingly dark mood, before rapidly returning to normal
Something, such as a character’s dialogue, begins to become increasingly darker and darker, only for the mood to suddenly return to normal.
Edited by jandn2014openRelationship gap
The actor of someone in a romantic relationship is older than their partner, and vice versa.
Drinking alcohol causes someone to become violently belligerent and hurt or fight other people.
