Find a Trope:
openRegret
openTwin Villains
A pair of villains who are twin siblings, usually Always Identical Twins or Half-Identical Twins.
openAccidental Drug Use (solved)
A character uses enough of a mind-altering substance to get drunk/high without knowing that's what it was.
Edited by PPPSSCopenMistaken Profession
When, for example, someone keeps going around in a suit and everyone thinks he's a waiter. Or when he wears a lab coat and everyone thinks he's a doctor.
openI'm not dead
Usually in cartoons or other works aimed at children, after somebody does something seemingly fatal like run off a cliff you hear them off-screen saying "I'm okay!" to reassure the censors that they haven't killed a character.
openGetting around censorship with history
Certain topics are deemed off-limits or better to be avoided by the Culture Police and The Powers That Be - such as recent deeds by an oppressive regime. However the author wants to bring attention to this. What to do to avoid prison or similar?
Easy. Look for a very similar event occurring in history, maybe in another country, and create about that. Readers will likely pick up on the similarities and censors will too but the latter will be unable to do anything to do about it because the creation isn't literally about the forbidden topic.
openGroup items placed in container and watched
I've seen this on TV several times, but cannot think of what it is called. You have a group of people, let's say 5, and they each have a valuable item that they put in a container. The group then gives the container having the five valuable items to a 6th person that each of the five trust with the container of valuable items. It could be given to one of the 5, but usually it is given to someone outside the group who is a neutral person. The 6th person was (or secretly was not) trustworthy, but now with the container of valuables, the 6th person uses them as thought they are his/her own. In addition, one of the 5 people (we'll call the 2nd person) might later approach the 6th person and cut a deal by which the both the 2nd and 6th person use the valuables in the container as they please without the others knowing. Person's 1, 3, 4, and 5 begin to mistrust each other as well as the 2nd person and the 6th person. If this is a comedy, hilarity ensues. A western, there is gun play. A mystery, perhaps a series of murders. I'm looking for the name of the trope. Thanks!
openReverse "Left the Background Music On"
Is there a trope for when a song being played in-universe becomes the (non-diegetic) background music?
openMurdering Unrequited Love's Child
Is there a trope like Murder the Hypotenuse but for the child of your crush? Someone loves someone but it isn't requited, so they take out their hatred on the child of the person and their lover.
openHalfhearted obligatory statement to cover a secret
In Aladdin our hero shows Jasmine his view of the palace, not knowing that she's the princess. She's not too thrilled to see it, seeing as she just ran away from home and the sight represents a prison to her. However, Aladdin doesn't know that, so she has to halfheartedly say "oh, it's wonderful", quickly turning away.
openTicket out of here
Usually a stock phrase, this is when someone has the opportunity to leave behind their current situation or location for something better. Normally they are in a bad apartment, have a bad job they can't leave, or might be in prison. The "Ticket out of here" being what allows them to leave.
openSimple Psycho Solution
A problem comes up. The Token Evil Teammate proposes a solution that, while undeniably simple to carry out, flies completely in the face of all morality (and success is absolutely not guaranteed). Sometimes he doesn't content himself with merely suggesting and goes out and does it, leaving other people to deal with the fallout.
For instance, a bus is stuck at an intersection because of a protest march moving through the street. Bob asks the driver why the bus is stuck, and after the driver tells him, he gets off the bus, pulls out his gun and starts shooting protesters, who quickly flee the scene. Bob gets back on the bus, tells the horrorstruck driver that the way is clear now, and goes back to his seat.
openWatch It For the B-Plot
When the audience finds the B-plot of an episode more interesting than the main plot. It seems like we would have a trope for this, but I can't seem to find it.
openMake up for each other
When two character’s strengths make up for each other’s shortcomings.
openCop and criminal forced by circumstances to team up
A police officer or otherwise straight character is forced to team up with a criminal in order to fight some greater threat. I.e. aliens or a foreign power blow up a jail, and the only people who are powerful enough to fight them are a cop and a former prisoner, who team up to fight the invaders.
I thought this was what Chained Heat is, but the description implies that that's only about them being literally chained together.
Boxed Crook is related but my understanding is that implies a power dynamic where the crook is released specifically to solve a particular crime and is threatened with imprisonment/punishment if he doesn't cooperate.
openCouple in any universe
Hi, is there a trope where a couple is a couple in any Alternative universe? Like if it just proves that they're just meant to be. Thanks
