The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openHated more for the minor reason
Could be a YMMV item, could be an in-universe trope.
Alice hates Bob, a known pervert who likes ogling females around him and make dirty comments. But that's not why she hates him - she hates him more for his poor fashion sense.
What's the trope for this?
openMistaken for Criminal
Someone looks like they have been committing a crime, but it turns out it's not what it looks like. (Doesn't have to happen in detective/police shows.)
What's the name?
openThe sound of flies heralds a corpse nearby
When characters enter an area and we hear flies buzzing around, it's a sure-fire sign for a dead body to pop up any second. Is this covered by Flies Equals Evil or Bug Buzz?
openYou Know That Exists, Right?
Character: You know cops criticize police brutality too, you know?
openEmphasis on Right Words
It's not Punctuated! For! Emphasis!, but it's when you use a certain tone to emphasize that this is what you mean to say when someone corrects you. It'll end up italicized in text form and will usually be done with an annoyed tone.
openArk Destroying Nazis Trope Film
Aside from Laser-Guided Karma, what's the trope that wipes the Nazis out all at once at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? It's similar to Keystone Army, but it's not that.
[down]I meant when bad guys as destroyed all at once.
Edited by futuremoviewriteropenAbnormal fishing
Character is seen fishing (presumably normal water), and they reel in something that is not a fish.
openImprobable use of a vehicle
Car Fu: Using a car as a weapon. My trope: Wielding a car as a weapon, like a giant club.
openI See Why It's Hard Now
Now that I've tried to do it myself, I can see why he was having such a hard time doing it.
openSliding Scale of Fantasy to Science Fiction
Is there anything like this? Closest thing I can find is Mohs Scale Of Science Fiction Hardness, which notes that extremely soft science fiction is sometimes basically just fantasy with a sci-fi skin.
openTwo Lesbian Universe Film
There are only two lesbians in the whole universe. Good thing they like each other right away! Often they help one another realize they are lesbians by falling in love and coming out together. It may end happily for the couple. If it ends badly, the more feminine lesbian will end up with a man, which means she's straight because there are No Bisexuals. The more butch lesbian will end up as a Psycho Lesbian. I have seen this in movies and books. Does it have an entry already?
openpower ups sitting around everywhere Videogame
Is there a trope for the ubiquitous video game trend of there being power-ups, weapons etc just sitting around for the player to use even when they are deep within enemy territory, despite how little sense that makes? I guess in some cases you could Hand Wave it by saying they are for the bad guys to use but you'd think they'd at least put the weapons in a lock box or something rather than just have them lying around where anyone can pick them up. Would this just fall under Gameplay and Story Segregation or what?
openGirl with Sentient Male Companion Object
Pretty easy to understand. A female character has a male talking object as a companion, such as Ryuko and Senketsu from Kill la Kill or Red and Transistor from Transistor.
openPlayer seemingly completes an achievement but not really?
This seems like a specific example, so I don't know if this is a single trope.
On Akiha's route in Tsukihime, your choice in the second-to-last scenario can automatically default the ending to the Normal End because it skips the Last-Second Ending Choice scenario that is supposed to determine if you get the Normal or True End. After you complete the shortcut Normal End, the game tells you that while there's no difference between the shortcut and the real version, this won't count towards your completion and you'll have to pick the other decision to end the route properly at the real Last-Second Ending Choice.
openEqually Wrong Correction
A gag where Alice says something blatantly wrong and Bob corrects her, but his correction is equally off target.
For example (paraphrased from Dave Barry): "Three out of four American high schoolers believed Abraham Lincoln to be 'a type of lobster'. That's right: more than seventy percent of these kids could not identify the man who invented the telephone."
openUnanswered Question
Is there any trope for "The longer a question goes unanswered, the less likely it is to be answered"?
openLong traveling montage for a very short distance Western Animation
A character has to climb 50 flights of stairs, perhaps they have a heavy payload and the elevator is broken. What proceeds is a long montage of them climbing up the stairs. They're so exhausted when the montage ends, but the joke is that they've only gotten to the second floor.
Can Unfinished Dub apply to exports in general, like manga translations? Or is it dub exclusive?
