It's incorrect to say that YMMV cannot be linked to. I'm not sure why mismithica made that claim.
I believe linking of YMMV tropes on non-ymmv page is not allowed. Unless its in universe. But i don't know if description can be an exception.
Edited by WhirlRXWhat Goes Where on the Wiki is ambiguous on the subject. YMMV can't be linked on "main pages", but I'm not clear if that means just main work pages or includes trope pages. Trope pages don't get the little inline gas-station icon, after all. (It definitely doesn't mean "pages in the Main/ namespace", because that would imply that YMMV could be linked on main work pages, and we're all fairly sure that's wrong.)
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing. In my understanding of policy, YMMV tropes only appear in examples of other YMMV tropes, yet are allowed in the description of non-YMMV tropes and of non-YMMV indexes because they may be related. For example; Draco in Leather Pants on Likable Villain.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Well, the problem here is that you were linking to the page YMMV. That's indeed wrong; that page is merely a disambiguation.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat actually seems a little confusing, since YMMV has a pretty straightforward definition of the term right at the top, while YMMV.Home Page doesn't.
But putting that aside for now, would [[YMMV/HomePage YMMV]] or YMMV without the link formatting have been allowed, or would those still be something to be avoided?
Edited by UnsungOne of those would have been preferable, yes. As Septimus says, linking to the page YMMV directly is never correct.
And RallyBot2, if you read the page YMMV, you'll see why I "made that claim". There was a wick purge of that page many years ago and it's still enforced today. To quote the page directly:
""Your Mileage May Vary", "YMMV", "Your Mileage Might Vary" - or any other form of calling something subjective is bad wiki writing. Opinions, perspectives, disagreements or doubts don't belong in examples or descriptions. Keep them off and Repair, Don't Respond. Articles are neither arguable nor debatable.
You may be looking for these pages:
- Love It or Hate It: For highly polarizing subjects that leave no middle ground and are discussed or referenced In-Universe.
- YMMV.Home Page: For the administrative guideline about so-called "YMMV tropes" and Audience Reactions, their index and the tabs for their examples.
Please change any links fitting to these pages to point to these pages."
Okay then. It might have been helpful to put it that way, "{{YMMV}} is a disambiguation page, please use YMMV/HomePage", rather than "YMMV is not a trope. Don't link to it for any reason."
To the mods: is there a reason that YMMV isn't just a redirect to YMMV.Home Page, with the information on the page itself? Because the reason to link it seems to be for the definition, which the home page doesn't have at the top, making it seem more like an index. And Love It or Hate It is relevant, but it's not the same thing as YMMV, so the disambiguation seems like an extra step? Or are the two more commonly confused than it seems?
Edited by UnsungThe reason why YMMV is not a redirect is because it is/was also used as Love It or Hate It - Your Mileage May Vary was the older name of Love It or Hate It.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think Your Mileage May Vary's Permanent Red Link Club entry is relevant for why Love It or Hate It is mentioned on Main.YMMV, why Your Mileage May Vary was cut entirely instead of being kept as a redirect to Love It or Hate It, and why linking to Main.YMMV is restricted:
- Your Mileage May Vary: The old name for Love It or Hate It (and not to be confused with the index page for YMMV tropes), kept being misused as an expression of subjectivity or even to dispute existing entries despite Examples Are Not Arguable. Neither redirecting nor removing the wicks did stop this usage.
Fair enough, then. Thanks for explaining.
As I understand it, they misinterpreted that policy. It's in place to prevent unnecessary subjectivity, which should be kept to YMMV subpages as much as possible. So when describing a character on an objective trope page (let's say The Lancer), it's bad form to pothole their name to The Scrappy, for instance, or potholing a plotline you didn't like to They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot (same with positive appraisals such as Moment of Awesome, Tear Jerker, etc.). Mentioning a YMMV trope on the description page of another trope is completely fine.
Edited by Morgenthaler You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!""They" meaning me? Because that's not what I was claiming at all; linking to the page YMMV directly is expressly forbidden under any circumstances, and has been for years.
You didn't say linking to {{YMMV}} isn't allowed because it's a disambiguation page, though, you just said linking to YMMV is never allowed. If you changed up a little wording a little the next time, it would be clearer.
^^ Well, that's cleared up then.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"
I'm not trying to argue the policy one way or another, just trying to make sure I understand it — on the Purgatory and Limbo page, I put in a 'not to be confused with Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory' paragraph and noted that that trope is YMMV. mismithica replaced it, saying YMMV was never to be linked to for any reason. It's not very important to add it back or anything, but just so I'm clear, you can't mention that a trope is YMMV-only on another page, only on that trope's own page?
