, That's because Australia has arguably the world's strictest biosecurity regime, to the point where you can't take your airline food off the plane without declaring it on the customs form and going through an inspection. You might recall the case from a few years back where Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got into legal trouble for bringing their dogs into the country without going through the proper procedures. The only non-native pet species you could bring in are cats, dogs, horses, rabbits and certain birds, and you will get into deep trouble if you try to bring them in outside of the proper channels. Though on the upside, native reptile species like blue-tongued skinks are easy enough to acquire as pets.
As for the reason? Well, only a couple centuries of having the local ecosystem decimated by invasive species.
