Edit: Okay so Descent 1 lacks matcens that never shut off. Same 3 spawning sequences before being spent routine on Insane. That's gonna make it a little more bearable. All this time I was convinced, because I spent playing the sequel much more

No, you can’t control who dies. As for "dating everybody", you can do Free Time events for doomed characters before the Deadly Life segments they die in, but you probably want a guide to see all of them.

Unfortunately yes, that's exactly how it works. Personally if you've spared yourself the spoilers, then go through it blind the first time and do the FTEs of whoever you want and after that start a second run specifically for the FTEs now that you know who dies and when.
Though a DR game with randomized or even just variable murders sounds sick.

How did ancient cultures discover precious stones and metals? I'm thinking particularly of the death mask of Tutankhamun, which is covered with a thin layer of gold and decorated with lapis lazuli and other stones. How did the Egyptians discover these things in the middle of the desert, especially without metal detectors or other modern technology?
I know I can Google this, I just felt like saying it here because it is definitely a thought I randomly had. :P
