Funny how competent that made Ash look when the anime was going all in on the idea that he barely had any clue of what he was doing.

It would defo fit him right now, however.

I think the movie came out in Japan right before the Indigo league eps started, so it was pretty much before Ash would get his first league loss that would eventually doom him for 20 years. Remember back then people did not think the show would go on forever and Ash winning the league or challenging the Kanto Elite 4 was something people thought could happen. So making Ash look like a competent hero in the Mewtwo movie felt like the climax of his development of the saga.

Little did we know this would be the start of a 20+ year never ending cycle.

It at least is ending, Satoshi already won a league and defended his victory rather than losing right after. And no longer is stuck in the same goal.

Baby steps, but we seem to be headed towards breaking the cycle.

Technically true: he did get a Regional Title.

He merely moved on to the next level of that route: The Top 1,000.

At first, I was "What the?! I thought that Ash was taking a victory sabbatical to help in research!"

...But then I remembered that Sa-To-Shi was interpreted by a few fans as a Goroawase Number, as was Sa-To-Ko. 314 was the interpretation I saw in the fan art that I can't find presently, but looking at the page, 404 (3,10,4) could also be valid. Either way, this concept could work...

Only four of Ash's companions also have Goroawase Numbers... and one was not of age during his journey.

• Misty^note Ka-Su-Mi: 133. If she had two characters, she wold be number Thirteen, so be thankful that she has 3.
• Max, son of Norman^note Ma-Sa-To: Kind of a strange one, since it reads zero-three-ten. So 30, 40, or perhaps 1,030, reversing the syllables; the number being greater than 1,000 representing his only recently coming of age... Or even 0,310...
• Mallow ^note Ma-O, 2 characters, so 2 syllables, so 2 digits: 00. And if that looks strange to you, then you haven't seen a Basketball roster.
• Go (No English name yet): 5. I'm sure that's a hilarious coincidence.

The movie continuity adds Verity^note Ma-Ko-To: Similar case as Max but sub in a 5 for the 3.

There are also 2 Battling Rivals that could step up:

• Ritchie^note Hi-Ro-Shi: 164
• Nando^note Na-O-Shi, 3 characters^note And, yes, he fought in the Sinnoh Conference: 704

Paul gets close, with both Shi and Ji as 4, dropping the "n" inbetween, making 44. But he has a 2nd character which is not quite "shi"... Likewise, Barry could be 10 if you dropped the "n" from Jun, but he has 3 characters, not 1...

And, as listed on the page, Jessie (634) and James (546). Having tangled with Ash a lot, they are bound to have some strength...

So I was thinking about female pokemon protags liked and started and started remembering being slightly surprised made Dawn a Stepford Smiler in the beginning and middle of the series. I didn't expect there would depth in how devastated she gets about her losing streak and how she wants to live up to her mother's success.

Dawn’s mother was basically an Asian Tiger Mom. She basically groomed Dawn from birth to follow in her footsteps and Dawn thinks she has to live up to her mothers fame. We see this with how strict Johanna is to Dawn on the phone.

Serena’s mother almost did the same but then let Serena leave Rhyorn racing to follow her interests.

Norman wanted May to do Gyms, May even gets a badge case in the third Hoenn ep, but sadly they never touch up on this again since next time we see Norman is 60 eps into Hoenn where May is already a coordinator and it’s never brought up.

It's funny how they basically did that same arc with Brendan in Adventure, but it had an actual negative effect on their relationship since Norman disapproved of contests in general.

Between Ash's XY team and Ash's SM team, in terms of personality, character development, and depth, which team did you enjoy more of?

The SM team generally had more personality, but Hawlucha had the best personality of the XY team. Greninja is Greninja, but Torracat actually had a great rivalrly and development with Kukui's Incineroar. It actually made me go back and watch through all the SM eps I randomly skipped over to see how it developed.

Asian tiger parenting is a bit more complex than wanting your child to become your legacy, though to deny that the intention is there would make me a bad Asian. It often involves more abuse, more love baiting, and generally more of a Sith Lord demeanor to your kids.

I'll admit, in terms of being actual characters, his SM team is definitely the best. Each one got a chance a to shine and there wasn't a feeling of one member overshadowing the others like with the likes of Sceptile, Infernape, and Greninja.

I don't see Johanna as tiger mom. I havent watched the show in years but I don't remember Johanna being very hard on Dawn. A little stern and didn't want her to giver dreams yeah but I don't think Johanna would be upset if Dawn chose something else besides coordinating. To me the living up to her mom's legacy thing was mostly internal

Heck the Pokemon moms in the anime tend to be pretty nice overall.

There were eps Johanna yelled at Dawn on the phone to stop crying after she lost a contest and talk to her friends. Lol, I remember when DP was originally airing everyone talking about how awful her mother was.

Ohh, must have forgotten that I guess Johanna is a bit emotionally distant from Dawn then. I don't know about her Tiger Mom but I am not Asian.

Off topic but cant believe I havent really watched the show in 11 years.

The anime has basically been revamped like 3 times over since DP ended. At this point each saga is basically its own thing now.

It's now confirmed that Ash is going to catch that Gengar

Though is he not going to get any of the galar region pokemon.

Well now he's caught one of every type.

Oh man, they are making up for all the captures Ash should've had. Hopefully he gets a Lucario next.

I think he might tbh, riolu and lucario are pretty prominant in the toys and promotional posters for this season.

Is anyone else a little worried that this is the last series cause of all the fan-requested stuff happening so fast?
