Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up]He was previously listed as a Magnificent Bastard for Dissidia, but not Complete Monster.

[up][up]"Attempt" is a tricky one there, it's their stated desire on multiple occasions but to what extent they actually try to do it, no. But yes, they are both Omnicidal Maniacs.

As to the Manikins, actually resources can be cited - Exdeath was the one who found them and released them, and the Museum profile says he did so due to "possessing considerable insight regarding the Rift", ergo, it is seemingly not something the Emperor or another villain could have done themselves, either due to lack of ability to release them or lack of knowledge they were there to be found. That said, in an Official Quest the Emperor expresses satisfaction with their release and the advantage it brings them.

Yes to Rudo; abstain on the Emperor. How heinous is he compared with the franchise's current keepers?

In the Dissidia series itself, there are no other candidates - Kefka would probably be the worst of them in deeds, but his death is treated as an Alas, Poor Villain, so he wouldn't qualify. There's Kefka in Opera Omnia who has passed, but that's an Alternate Universe to this game.

For the whole franchise, the Emperor is already on the FF2 page as a CM - to summarize, he decimates several towns and enslaves the survivors to build his massive airship Dreadnought, abducts Princess Hilda and lets the rebels rescue an impostor to infiltrate them, employs a floating fortress inside a massive cyclone to destroy more cities, and when the rebels kill him his soul takes over Hell, returns to Earth, and he raises his new palace from hell in place of his old one to continue his conquest.

[up][up] In my opinion, considering he's perpetuating the destruction of the gods which will most probably destroy each characters worlds leaving behind a broken world where Emperor would remain to reshape the remnants under his image, yeah... that's pretty up there. Masterminding a conquet the world scheme through essentially the destruction of multiple worlds is pretty damn unique, though Chaos is the one causing but that's out of his nature. Emperor is taking advantage of it however and helping it along so yeah.

[up]Well, there's nothing to imply that the deaths of Cosmos and Chaos would have any effect on other worlds. It's just the world of Dissidia that the Emperor will rule over, and yes, the death of the gods causes masses destruction and chaos to it.

Given that the Dissidia world ("World B" for the sake of proper naming) is exists within the Void Between the Worlds, the Emperor's conquest of it would make him a Dimension Lord with the possibility to go for Multiversal Conqueror, but he never states such an intent. Though imho he totally would, probably.

[up] I got that idea because didn't one of the heroes, Onion Knight I think, mentioned the destruction of Chaos and Cosmo might also reach their own world too? I mean to be fair Emperor was planning to conquer everything, so it's likely he'd be after their worlds too.

He did state everything would be under his reign with what he believe was the power of the gods which is why he manipulated Jecht to make crystals for himself. It might not be directly stated, but I'm pretty sure he meant every world, not just the Dissida world of FF II.

Hmm, I'll give a tentative yes to the Dissidia!Emperor. Another case where conquering instead of destroying makes him a CM, like Alduin.

[up][up][up]I can't find anything to that effect, the closest I find is this dialogue from Cloud, which is too vague to really be interpreted as "if Chaos or Cosmos die/if this world is harmed, other worlds will suffer too".

"...That's not it. All we have to do is focus on saving this world. Then in another realm, another world will be saved. That's the world we'll be returning to."

Do you think Dr. Martin Brenner should be cut, since it has been confirmed that his bow is not over yet?

@caio Whether or not anything happens with him that warrants a cut, Brenner has the actions to count now.

Brenner being alive or not is irrelevant right now as he keeps based on everything he’s done so far at this point (thanks to the supplementary materials).

Okay, did my first EP yesterday, now it's time for my first cut. Like I had said in my first EP, I had stopped by this forum a few times before joining, so I think I got the baseline on what counts and what doesn't. Two from scp.

AM from Peace. I would Settle for that. This. Is. A. Nothing. Story. There isn't anything there. It is less then 2,000 words. 3/4 of the story is Ted just saying what AM did to him, and 1/4 is AM sacrificing his powers to kill the humans.

Up next, Lawrence from The Young Man. A bit longer, but the story is just a description of events. Also, more importantly, it lied. "Corporal Lawrence is a seemingly normal but unsettling soldier of the British Army in World War I, feared due to his emotional detachment and love for nihilism". While he was emotionally detached, he didn't fall into nihilism until he fell into the hole. That is another thing, he was not responsible for the enemy unit rotting away. Most importantly, he fell into a deep, rotting hole, and came out shaking and that is when he started killing people. Also, it sounds to me like he went genuinely nuts after being exposed to whatever was in hole, talking about the halls and singing instead of answering questions. While he was always uncomfortable to be around, and his origins were a mystery, I read the story multiple times, and I can safely say he was harmless before being corrupted by the hole.

If I am wrong, can someone give these a read and tell me why they still count, please? It won't take you long, these both are really short.

EDIT: Sorry, I can't post the links for some reason.
