Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'm saying that the other pages had more explanation as to why he was ultimately downvoted that Polar could read at his leisure. I didn't intend for it to come out condescending-sounding.

[tup] Ashberry, btw.

IDK, but that might've been the film version.

[down] I stand corrected then.

Interestingly, Decker was played by David Cronenberg. Any other people who have played a CM and directed another movie? John Huston also comes to mind.

You know what? Concerning King Hyperion, he was already proposed almost exactly two years ago. From the looks of it, nearly everyone voted in favor of him. Should I copypaste the proposal again for voting or should I whip up a an entry for him?

No. We turned down that post because Polar hadn't actually read the comics, as I'd mentioned earlier.

Compared to him, I read the comics but it's been years since I've done so. I had to read the Wikia for a refresher and it's pretty accurate to what I remember actually reading. Should I do a readover again and then post my own proposal?

So while I am working on entries I realized I had to cut one of my earleir proposals due to a detail I previously overlooked. When I just rewatched Dante The Great from V/H/S: Viral - the old woman who say Dante always calls her and is gonna be paying a visit ? Yeah it turns out she's his mother. They make a quick mention but it caught me by surprise when I looked at it again; how did I miss that the first two times ? So Dante's a cut.

Yes to all the candidates I missed.

Interesting question, how much characterization does a SNES villain need to count? I ask this because there was a Spawn video game from the 90s, where Malebolgia manipulates an angel now known as The Mad One into stealing the souls of 13 innocent children in order to create a weapon that can destroy Malebolgia. Malebolgia did this so the Mad One would bring him these souls, Malebolgia planned to kill the Mad One, but Spawn beats him to it. Malebolgia takes the stolen children souls and uses it to create a giant demon called The New Breed and sends him to Earth to go on a rampage, to devour the innocent.

Now its a SNES game, not heavy on story and Malebolgia does not appear till the end, but he is pretty manipulative and every bad thing that happens is his fault in the story. This game is a bit heavy sometimes, they use the word Darklands instead of Hell to refer to Malebolgia's realm, but Spawn kills Billy Kincaid and takes his heart to open a portal to Hell and the story is pretty dark for a SNES era game.

Spawn: Armageddon is another Spawn game, but I am far less familiar with that one.

SNES!Malebolgia MAY be worth an effortpost, though it's tricky since it's an action game and not a plot-heavy game with someone like, say, Kefka. Though OTOH, it could be a case like the Entity, where he's manipulative enough to count.

I played Armageddon in college! Those were the early to mid 2000s, and from what VERY little I remember, nobody counts. I DO remember hacking up enemies and objects with the ax though evil grin.

I DID find this video of cutscenes, if anyone wants to give it a quick watch.

Alright... I finished both two works in a row: Witch Hunter Robin and Stigmata: Sekiren no Saija.

Now I'm going to talk about the former regarding this: Sadly, I agree with Scraggle that the Big Bad , Takuma Zaizen, doesn't count at all but not because of the last redeeming quality but the redeeming quality in question? Were put in the middle of the story and that's when the assassins that was sent to kill Robin because she was revealed to be a witch, they used Zaizen's daughter as a bait and she was critically injured as a result... This causes Zaizen to go Berserk and kicks Amon repeatedly. That and Zaizen also visits the hospital to check on his daughter's well-being... Suggesting that he truly cares for his own daughter.

This is a shame because his plans is pretty heinous on his own and by the end of the series, he's revealed to be nothing but a Knight Templar. But alas, his care for his daughter is still there and it's pretty genuine so yeah... He doesn't qualify. But as a pennance however, there are other two one-shot villains who could almost qualify in my opinion although one of them I'm really unsure of. Shall I EP both of them?

Also, Stigmata... Well, it was revealed one of the subordinates of the Big Bad is the one who calls the shots a.k.a. the guy behind almost all the bad things happened. But the issue is... Do you think that being cast out by God could be considered a legitimate Freudian Excuse? That and after being cast out by God, he's disgusted by human beings who worship said god that cast him out and as a result, he ended up trying to bring the end of the humans by awaking his master so that he could prove that God is a truly selfish being who cares about himself. So yeah... Do you think this came across as legitimate excuse or not?

@Demon Duck Of Doom It was never stated why actually. Probably because of being a rejected being known as Nephilim. I really need to re-read the manga
