Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Is anyone familiar with transformers? There is an possible candidate I have in mind for an effortpost but there are a lot of issues with how heinous this character is and I was wondering if someone familiar with the franchise can pm me to discuss since I am not sure if this character is heinous enough baseline-wise(he actually dosen't need to compete with a lot of villains in the same franchise for reasons I will get to in the PM if anyone is willing to discuss this but the issue is baseline heinousness).

Hrrrmmmmm, as someone who has read through a hellton of Grimm Fairy Tales comics, and had a major hand in the proposal of the worst villain in the franchise, the Red Queen, I....think I'll lean 'Yes' on the Vapor Lord, but it's mainly due to his attacking a children's hospital. Otherwise he wouldn't stand out much, I don't think.

'No' to yet another SCP candidate (Seriously, are people even TRYING to make a cohesive story with this franchise???).

@xie: I'm pretty well-versed in the Transformers franchise, so shoot me a PM if you want on the candidate.

So, kind of an unrelated issue, but I was contemplating the validity of Lilly D from the Haunting Hour series. From the sound of her, she doesn't really seem that heinous in comparison to some of the more violent antagonists of the series. There was also the fact that partially her motivation for trying to switch places in her debut episode was so she could feel loved.

[up][up]Lilly D was a character I'd had doubts on for a while for those exact reasons, but I never said anything because it had been years since I'd seen the show. Agreed she should probably be cut.

Alright, time to explain what happens in season 2 of Wolf Creek.

Eve Thorogood, the protagonist of the first season isn't in this one. Presumably, she still believed Mick to have died despite his body disappearing, and she left Australia and went back to America. Despite al common sense, she apparently didn't tell anyone about him, as he is still not a fugitive. The only callback to the previous season is when someone notices a scar on Mick's chest from where Eve impaled him at the climax of the season one finale. We don't see the other two scars, which are presumably down lower and hidden by his shirt.

The season opens with him in a gun shop pretending to snipe at a woman. The gun shop owner, Tom, is an old friend of his who sold guns to Mick's father when Mick was a boy. Tom is very familiar with Mick and his family, and every year, Mick goes to his shop to buy new guns from him. The wo are close enough to tell jokes to each other. Tom tells Mick that he's heard about a lot of murders going around near Mick's area, telling him that he's seen crime shows and the killer is always caught, as someone recognizes them. The police talk to someone who knows them, recognizes their vehicle, and they put everything together like a puzzle. Hearing this, Mick realizes that, just by virtue of being so familiar with him, Tom could eventually lead to Mick's capture. Mick is reluctant to kill his old friend, and leaves the shop. However, after thinking about it, Mick changes his mind, goes back in, and shoots and kills Tom, his friend for decades. Tom lives long enough to realize that Mick is the killer. Despite their friendship, Mick shows little to no remorse.

The main plot of the season is a tour group in Australia being targeted by Mick. Mick meets the tour guide, Davo, at a truck stop. The two chat casually, with Mick commenting on the "full deck" of the group; Caucasians, African Americans, Canadians, Europeans, and gays. After Mick says that he thinks he could be a tour guide, Davo say that he doesn't think so because of his mouth, referring to the slurs Mick uses to refer to the group. Mick takes offense to this and decides to make the group his next victims. Mick kills Davo at a pit stop while the group is asleep and takes hi place, telling the group that Davo had a family emergency, and he is their replacement driver.

Mick drugs the group and takes them deep into the outback, leaving the bus after taking out the battery so he could make it a hunt and slowly kill off the group. Mick kills the group one by one. He kills one person by beating them savagely with a shovel, cutting out their tongue, and leaving them buried up to their head in sand, finally burying their head under a termite mound.

Mick continues to hunt and kill the tourists, eventually coming across a group of aboriginal trackers, who incapacitate him with a magic singing ritual that causes him great pain (so magic exists in the franchise to an extant, maybe Mick really did see ghosts in Desolation Game, and he did get superhuman characteristics) in an attempt to save the tourists. Mick however revives and kills them.

After the tourists reach a mine site, Mick arrives and kills the owner and his wife and son (who is a child). The tourists learn from a map in the mine site that there is an abandoned mine not far from it, which must be Mick's lair since it's the only place around for miles. They decide to go there to rescue the surviving tourists that Mick had captured earlier for torture. Mick however follows and hunts them in the tunnels of the mine. One of the tourists, Brian, reveals that he is a murderer too, having killed his father. He tries to convince Mick to let him go, as they are similar and Brian doesn't care what happens to the others. Mick appears to agree, but later goes back on his word and kills Brian. The last of the tourists, Rebecca, Danny, and Kelly, attack Mick, but he locks Danny and Rebecca behind a door and goes to kill Kelly, promising to torture and kill Danny and Rebecca later. Rebecca blows up the place with gasoline to destroy Mick's lair and save herself and Danny from a long and painful murder. Mick and Kelly get out and Mick tells Kelly that she can either let him kill her or try to walk her way to civilization, saying that they are in the middle of nowhere and she will die before she reaches civilization. Kelly naturally tries to take the walk, so Mick drives off and leaves her to die in the outback.

The season ends with Mick at a pub watching a news story about the missing tour group. After the credits, we see Kelly' s phone finally get reception, implying that she will survive since she can now call for help.

I know there's a lot of effort posts going on, so here's another one.

What Is the Work?

The Suffering is a 2004 horror/action game developed by Surreal Software and published by Midway that feels like a combination between Oz, Silent Hill, and Infamous.

You play as Torque, a man of few words who has been accused of murdering his wife and two sons, even though he can’t remember doing so. He’s placed in Abbott State Penitentiary on Carnate Island, a location with a very shady, dark past. On Torque’s first day in prison, an earthquake hits Carnate, and suddenly, creatures called Malefactors (designed by Stan Winston himself) invade, killing the prisoners and guards. It’s up to Torque to escape the island, all while battling the guilt over his family’s death and piecing together what really happened.

Throughout the game, Torque encounters many spirits, some decent, others harmful. Today, we'll be looking at one of the harmful ones.

Who Is he?

Hermes T. Haight (pronounced ‘hate’) is the former executioner at Abbott State Penitentiary who later became a ghost, spending his time haunting the prison and killing people with his poisonous gas.

What has he done?

In life, Hermes worked at Abbott, getting the job of executioner because he managed to hide his psychopathic personality better than others; the prison didn’t want to hire obvious psychos, so they chose him, where he continued to work due to receiving praise from the Maryland Board of Corrections ("Once you've killed a man who was begging for his life, and everyone congratulates you on a job well done, nothing can compare."). He used everything to kill people: lethal injections, nooses, electrocution, etc. But his favorite kind of execution was locking prisoners in a sealed chamber and unleashing a colorless, odorless gas that causes them to suffocate to death, having done so for decades, taking pride in his work. He was even the cause of Horace Gage’s death via the electric chair, where he became an electric spirit forced to haunt the prison. One day, Hermes became obsessed with wondering what his victims went through before their executions, listening to their phone calls and studying their corpses post-execution. In the end, Hermes decided to get a taste of the gas himself, where he ended up dead.

As a ghost, Hermes wonders the halls of Abbott, randomly gassing prisoners to death. He colored his gas green so that his victims can see it coming, enjoying their sudden fear before they die. His first appearance has him trapping a guard into his gas chamber and having him slowly killed (the player is forced to watch, not having the ability to save him). When talking to Torque for the first time, he’s jealous about how he got to kill a woman before him, explaining how he’s a professional dedicated to his work and that nothing will stop him.

Throughout the game, Hermes tries to bring Torque to the dark side, encouraging him to unleash his literal inner beast. At one point, he randomly kills two prisoners, telling Torque that he can’t escape him. He then kills a prisoner trying to escape from the island. If you save Jimmy from being trapped behind some rocks, Hermes will end up killing him via his gas right before his boss fight. His fight has him trying to gas Torque to death while talking about his backstory, claiming how his “talents were underutilized,” and how now that he’s dead, he can do whatever he wants.

His last scene has him grudgingly helping Torque get across a gorge, only doing so because the area that Torque must get to, the dock, holds the secret as to who killed Torque's family (all depending on the player’s actions), as well as the fact that he now sees Torque as a killing machine. He creates a bridge by gassing an escaping prisoner bus and killing the people inside, causing the thing to get wedged in-between the gap.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. Despite claiming that he’s just doing his job, that doesn’t excuse his sick enjoyment in killing people, along with finding different ways to kill people. While he helps Torque near the end, his attitude makes it feel like he ‘has to’, rather than ‘wants to’.

Heinousness?

Out of all the other ghosts haunting Carnate, he’s easily the worst, not counting the mindless Malefactors infesting the island and killing everyone. Dr. Killjoy is an Affably Evil figure who genuinely wanted to help people, despite how unconventional and unsafe his methods are (it’s also ambiguous as to whether or not he’s evil or just crazy). The aforementioned Horace, despite having killed his wife, is actually a sane individual who helps out Torque whenever he can. The Three Girls started out as pyromaniacs accusing people of witchcraft before committing suicide after regretting their actions. Hermes on the other hand is just a sadist who gets enjoyment out of killing.

Conclusion

An easy keep. As a representation of the Holocaust (with Hermes sharing the Nazi’s “just doing my job” attitude), Hermes stands out as an evil a piece of garbage hated by everyone in Abbott, even before his death.

Don't change the channel, because there's more Suffering to come tonight.

[tup]Hermes. Sounds like a real psycho.

Also, there is a bracketing error in the Pale Queen's entry, causing "immediately flees" to read as "Dirty Coward immediately flees." I don't know what kind of error message to send to the person who posted it, so I'm just pointing it out here.

[up] Depending on the player's actions, the ending will reveal what really happened to Torque's family. Doing bad things shows Torque murdering his family in cold blood, while doing good things shows that someone was sent to kill the family and that Torque just so happened to walk in on the murders.

That's why I compared this game to Infamous.

@Austion DR, Is Lily's motivation wanting to be loved played sympatheticly or is it just her being a narcissist? If the latter than that is not a disqualifier.

Also just because there are more violent antagonists doesn't necessarily mean they are more heinous. Some context on what these antagonists do would be appreciated.
