Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sorry for the double post but I am now realizing that disambiguating Garth's Preacher script is literally impossible. Since it is made by Garth himself who also made the comic series doing it by his name wouldn't make sense but since it also doesn't have a release date I can't use the year either. For now, I just left it as undisambiguated but this isn't exactly ideal, I have never seen a situation like this before where we have both normal disambiguation methods completely unavailable.

Well, the Ennis draft is undated while the August script is 2010 - could one just be at Script.Preacher Undated Draft while the other is at Script.Preacher 2010?

[tup] Herod.

At first, I thought it was the version from The Star, mainly because of his, "If I cannot find this one child, then I'll have to kill them all!" line. That version might be a good contender, too, though, my only problem is that he doesn't make much of an outright attempt to kill every child in Judea.

[up]I watched that movie recently, and I doubt he'd count, considering how the movie almost insultingly skips over the whole "massacre every infant male" to have a safe Happy Ending.

I do actually remember looking into that one to see if he qualified. The thing that made me hesitant is that it is literally all we get a threat that shows he is willing to do it but nothing in the way on an actual attempt. Who knows maybe I am wrong about this one though.

And yeah as Clown Face pointed out it is very glossed over.

Speaking of Herod, could he be a contender for the actual religion? Mass infanticide seems pretty bad.

I've also seen The Star and yeah, that sounds more like Fridge Horror. The movie is so desperately trying to keep the story kid-friendly and when you remember things like that, it definitely makes it harder to do.

I wouldn't exactly call it Fridge Horror exactly, the line is pretty blatant (even using the world "kill"), it is just all we get and then nothing else.

So yeah, it's a primal example then of when we CAN'T bring OV to the forefront since there's nothing else to support it in the narrative.

Psycho-Pass: The Movie

  • Colonel Nicholas Wong is the ruthless military commander of Shambala Float, a dystopian country in crisis from the terror of its despotic regime. Having allied with Sibyl for mutual benefits, Wong launched a coup and disposed of dictator Chuan Han, replacing him with a puppet figure in his likeliness while Wong ostensibly took control. Under Wong's jurisdiction, Han's regime becomes far more brutal, violently oppressing any resistance through illegal abuse of Japan's technological exports. With the introduction of the Sibyl System to Shambala Float, Wong segregates latent criminals from those with clean hues, turning them into collared slaves subject to electric shocks and fatal poisoning at Sibyl's discretion. Wong himself is a latent criminal with a Crime Coefficient of 380 but exploits a loophole to have the cymatic scanners not detect him or his military personnel. With the aid of Sibyl in furthering Shambala Float as a technological construct, Wong ultimately plans to conquer all of Southeast Asia and rule with an iron fist.

[up][up][up][up][up] It's not. The Pharaoh from the book of Exodus did the same thing.

[up][up] Agreed. It isn't like Judge Claude Frollo where his attempt to rape Esmeralda is Offstage Villainy yet still has onscreen actions (like ordering an entire family burned alive and attempting genocide on the Roma people) that qualify him for the trope, which is a completely different case.

Requesting an investigation for Rikako Oryo of Psycho-Pass with full dialogue scripts if needed. I went and rewatched episodes 7-8 to make sure nothing is ill-informed. Keep in mind I did not see this character on the administrative page or anything to dispute this yet. These are all from the original Japanese scripts, not the dub. At the very least, if someone wants to still challenge the notion Rikako genuinely loves her daddy, I think a new writeup axing the bolded text would be due eventually:

Current Description

Rikako Oryo, one of Shogo Makishima's side projects, relishes Shakespeare's plays when they depict human cruelty and suffering. Rikako has an obsession with creating art by drugging her fellow female students before raping and murdering them. In order to mimic her father's artworks, which Rikako enjoyed even if she had nothing but contempt for the man himself, Rikako dissects the girls and arranges the corpses into scenes to mirror the portraits.

- Rikako cares for her catatonic father in the hospital every day. We never see her visit him to abuse him in this capacity if Cioccolata comes to mind. It is very genuine.

- At no point does Rikako notably express contempt for or badmouth her father. In a speech following his passing, she states she deeply admires and worships him as a person. Even though she claims to not forgive him for giving in to Sibyl, she expresses she will continue to honor his memory.

- When talking about Rikako to Senguji, Makishima surmises that Rikako is consumed by love for her father and is likely motivated solely by a warped desire for revenge against society for what it did to him.

- On the verge of death, Rikako despondently grieves for her father, repeatedly muttering his name while spilling tears.

Another proposal! This time from a guilty pleasure film of mine.

What is the Work

The Scorpion King is a fantasy action film series that counts both as a prequel and a spin off from The Mummy franchise. It follows an Akkadian warrior known as Mathayus and his legendary rise to power. The film I'm focusing on is the first one and the resident big bad Memnom.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

Memnon is the warrior king of an unnamed empire which swept from the east and is proclaimed "The greatest swordsman in the world." Taking a fascination with the sorceress Cassandra, Memnon kidnapped her at a young age and used her ability to witness the future to lead a brutal campaign throughout Egypt, destroying countless settlements and killing the inhabitants. Memmon is shown to have a desire for Cassandra and would've taken her to bed (non consensually) if not for the fact that if Cassandra had sex, it would take away her foreseeing ability.

In the introduction of the film, Memnon is seen riding out of a burning town with charred corpses tied to poles along the path. When Memnon reaches a large group of the villagers who had surrendered, he had them all slaughtered without mercy. In the end of this campaign, there were only a few tribes that hadn't been placed under Memnon's rule or put to the grave.

Mathayus and his other two Akkadian comrades, one being his brother, get hired by the king of the free tribes to kill Cassandra to take away Memnon's tactical advantage. Unknown to them, the king's son Takmet had informed Memnon of the plan and to prove his loyalty, killed his father. While the 2 Akkadians get shot by Memnon's guards, Mathayus manages to sneak into Cassandra's tent without detection. Unfortunately because of Takmet's betrayal, Memnon had his guards grab Mathayus and when it was revealed that his brother was still alive, Memnon took Mathayus' knife and slit his brother's throat in front of him. When told he cannot kill Mathayus by his hand or any that he commands by Cassandra, Memnon has Mathayus almost fully buried but left his head out of the ground to be eaten alive by killer ants.

Later in the film when Mathayus breaks into his Memnon's keep, a child who was discovered with jewels that Mathayus had bribed him with was brought to him. Calling it "the penalty of thievery", Memnon almost has the child's arm hacked off before Mathayus interferes. In the ongoing scuffle, Mathayus escapes while taking Cassandra. Memnon sends his top enforcer Thorak and a small band of guards to chase them.

Later in the film when the hero's end up in one of the last free villages, Cassandra speaks to a child before having a vision that Memnon goes on a mass slaughter spree there, killing everyone including the children. To stop that, Cassandra returns back to Memnon's keep. On the night that Memnon would commence the raid, Cassandra reveals herself to be in the keep. Memnon approaches one of his loyal soldiers who had prior raised concerns about where Cassandra was and stabbed him calling him "weak and afraid" for doubting him.

Memnon takes Cassandra back to his throne room and tests her by making her selecting the empty vases in front of her while 2 of them have snakes in, to make sure she still has her power. When he realises that she doesn't because she consummated with Mathayus, he goes to kill her before Mathayus intervenes. After a climatic fight, Mathayus gets shot with an arrow by a soldier. Memnon thinking that he was dead, overlooked the front of his palace where a majority of the rebels (including a child) were and goes to have them executed. Memnon meets his end when Mathayus shoots an arrow into him with such force that it blasts him back into an ongoing explosion and his body crashes onto the floor. With their king gone, Memnon's soldiers surrender and hail Mathayus and Cassandra as their new rulers.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Memnon's "care" for Cassandra is nothing more than lust and she states that he's been keeping her as a slave only waiting until his quest of conquest is complete and he no longer needs her powers before he has her for himself.

He sees himself that he's a WIE with his goals of conquest with quotes like this -

Memnon: I will bring order after centuries of chaos. An order which will last for a thousand years. The Sorceress: Rivers of blood can never bring peace. Memnon: But they can bring obedience. That will suffice for now.

His actions speak otherwise with the mass murdering of people who surrender to him and killing his own soldiers who questioned him out of concern. All I get from this guy is delusion and empty rhetoric. He never has any acts of kindness or mercy to counteract his statements.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Scorpion king has quite a decent standard to be honest with the worst of the worst in this franchise being rulers who are callous to their own followers and have attempted to slaughter settlements. With some of them, it's attempted by the looks of things and not confirmed on screen villainy like Memnon committed. The distasteful relationship he has with Cassandra also is something not seen within the franchise and it's implied Memnon's had lustful intentions for Cassandra since she was young... so make of that with what you will.

Final Verdict?

[tup] For the cliché hammy villain in the cliché hammy film.

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, you entertain me. To show my appreciation, I will help you awaken from your world of clichés.
