Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So, it's been a couple of days but Futuremoviewriter and I are working on a couple of Darkman candidates. However, I was checking old stuff for Natural Born Killers, and I saw both Jack Scagnetti & Ed Wilson were cut a long time ago. But, as this is not what Tarantino originally had in mind, would it be possible to write up an EP for both characters? Or are they too over-the-top?

[up] What was the reason they were cut? Also what the director wants doesn't mean much.

[tup] Isla Kastner/The Occultist. The fact that she's willing to damn anyone, including an eight-year-old, all to save her own skin makes her quite a nasty piece of work.

[down] I’ve liked every entry so far. If you watch the first movie and like what you see, chances are you’ll like the rest of them.

Ordeaux26, it was cut in 2013, with nothing of note outside of "Cut per the Complete Monster clean-up thread."

"An odd case - Yes, Mickey and Mallory kill a shit-ton of innocent people, but Oliver Stone notes that they also kill some deserving people (the rednecks who try to rape Mallory, et cetera).

  • Mallory's father is a much straighter example given the vile emotional and sexual abuse he directs at his wife and daughter. He really did have it coming.
  • Jack Scagnetti."

Does it look like Zero Context Effort?

Yes to Isla and from what I recall of the film, both flunk the HS but if you'd like to say your piece go for it.

Ugh, not this argument again I see this all the time where people think that killing bad people is redeeming to me it all depends on the motive. For instance, if someone brutally tortures and kills a serial pedophile purely out of sadism that is still bad.

As for them qualifying not sure.

[up][up][up] Oh yeah that's right, MB is a very different trope to CM though I thought that is how we treat judging how bad murder is, the person's motive rather than how bad the victim is, maybe I am wrong though if I am that is my opinion. When it comes to the example that was the worst villain archetype I could think of

[tup]Lex, The Ocuultist.

Okay, I just finished of reading again Elmore Ink, so time to discuss Ben Boqulet/The Creator; also I discovered that the autor of Teri × Gumball: In Between Worlds will work more on it, but considering that is a diferrent autor, that will appear as a different story, and that we don't know if the story will continue from the last chapter released or if it'll be rewritten, I think we should treat it like a different canon.

That said...

What is the work?

Elmore Ink is a fanfic that mixes The Amazing World of Gumball and Bendy and the Ink Machine, after The Inquisition the void absorbs Elmore and Gumball gets trapped in a world that is like Joey Drew Studios, but expanded to at least a entire city and presumibly all the world, after this Gumball have to manage to survive and return to his world, fortunely for him has the help of a group of toon/human hybrids who call themselves "The Insurgence" who want to kill "The Wattersins" and are composed by counterparts of some of his schoolmates. While this Gumball starts discovering his counterpart past.

Who is he? What has he done?

Ben Boqulet, also known as The Creator is the responsible of the status of the town on the story and In-Universe the creator of the show where Gumball lives; he was originally a cartoon maker who opened his studio in Elmore, he contracted several people in his study, most of them where worked overtime to create a machine that he said would help the town, actually it was supposed to turn people into cartoons, the machine was tested on the counterparts of Gumball and his family (Docutor, Darwin, Richard, Artemis, and Gumball's unnamed counterpart), the experiment failed and turned them into monstrous toon/human hybrids, also altered their sanity and made them go in a killing spree, while they also turned other people into hybrids like them, altough some of they doesn't look being too bad, if well this was not his intention he doesn't show remorse. In an unknown time after it, he got create an universe to his cartoons, later he threw Rob into the void and later the rest of Elmore too. His first appearance in the story is after the Wattersins find Rob, when he accuse him of ruining his ending and orders The Demon (Ink Gumball) to kill him, and traps his soul into a machine, from where he take another soul and tries to crush it to threaten The Demon when he feels remorse; afeter it he orders the Wattersins to kill The Insurgence, threatening to kill them if they fail or defy him. Also is implied that he dissapeared more people to his experiments and messed with people's memories to make them forget the person he turned into The Demon. Since the work has been discontinued he doesn't get any class of punishment for it.

Do he have any disqualifiying trait?

Most of his crimes happened before the story, but we see them in a flashback during the second chapter.

He spares Gumball, but it's not for care about him nor any standard, but becauses he needs him to do the ending he wanted.

Appart of it there are two possible problems:

The first are that he has not much personality, he has some but I am not sure if the enough how to count, I can put here his lines and lines that talk about his personality if you want, altough I will go to sleep soon, so if it's the case I will do it tomorrow.

The other if that maybe the rest of the thread disagree in treat this like it's own canon, case in which he would be an automatic cut because his arc still would be ongoing.

Heinousness standard

The Wattersins were responsibles of many deaths, but as I already said they caused it by Ben's actions, and they are almost if not completly amoral, so the moral agency would be on him like in the case of SpongeBob SquarePants. Possibly the actions of The Wattersins that he didn't entered could count for them instead him, that is not a problem, the only things are they have are attempted murders, and in the case of The Witch attempted torture and caging and beating Clare. Rob exists there, but only has his canonic crimes. Appart of it most other villains are just following his orders of kill The Insurgence and capture Gumball; the only exception is Ink Felicity AKA The Inculpable who tried to kill him for "making" her crash her car.

Final verdict

Some undecided, but leaning a yes.

EDIT: PD, some members that also are in the MB thread might remember that I already discussed the work there, the motive if that the disqualying factors of the characters for that trope are noticiable since the beginning of the work.

Kind of reminds me of The Lion King Adventures as part of a weird Author Avatar . Seems more it's just a meta thing instead of being actual jabs at the creator, but I could see the issues there.

[down] I'll just abstain.

[up]The work doesn't make it as a Take That! or something like it, just use him as a plot device, and the work never acts as something related to the real world.

Basically the work treats him like a even more obssesed version of Joey drew, never relate him with the real Ben Boquelet, as I said in the effortpost myself have doubts about the personality, but that is probably not a problem. Alos I am going to sleep in this moment, so if you have more questions I will answer them tomorrow.

Quick one for tonight:

What's the work?

Cowboys and Aliens is a comic created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, with art by Dennis Calero and Luciano Lima! So, the premise is simple: aliens land in the old west and begins screwing things up, leading to an alliance between Natives and cowboys...the Caste is a brutal expansionist society of aliens...and one ship of them has crashed on earth led by Rado Dar, our candidate.

Who is Rado Dar?

A hulking brute and member of the House of Dar, Rado Dar is out for glory and conquest...true ,anifest destiny, you might say. Upon his arrivla on earth, a group of curious Natives greet them and Dart shoots them down, saying to take them for dissection. Deciding the earth is ripe for the taking, Dar orders his forces to assault a nearby cavalry fort and massacres it to the last man. Deciding to attack the nearby town, Silver City, Dar intends to use minerals and materials on hand to construct a beacon.

With it? He'll bring the Caste down on earth and initiate a mass-human extermination to colonize earth for the Caste (in the name of House Dar and himself of course). One of his men, his second, objects on the basis they really shouldn't waste time killing primitives...better to just get off, right?

Dar is soon congratulating someone else on his promotion with a shot of the dead officer, and a warning to not question him or else. One of his subordinates, an officer named Kai is actually a resistance agent for an alliance against the Caste, and sneaks off to join the heroes, gunslingers Zeke and Verity who are helping the natives...now, Dar is repulsed initially, but a traitor's help allows him to exploit a chance to capture the heroes and try to have the resistance, tribe and the remainder of the town butchered.

Thankfully, using alien tech, the tribe is able to break the heroes loose, leading to a confrontation...with Kai's help, Zeke and Dar have a showdown, ending as Zeke tricks him with a delayed shell that Dar easily catches...but instead encases him in a liquid metal, either freezing or suffocating him.

The heroes win...and Kai broadcasts to her superiors that earth can stand with them against the Caste, leading to an approach of alien ships with the sign of greeting: "Howdy."

Mitigating issues?

Nope. Rado Dar is a savage, militaristic expansionist who's apparently bad by the standards of his own people. He's a genocidal warlord out for himself who embodies manifest destiny as an alien. We've got a wide bodycount, plus attempted genocide of earth and nobody else to really compare him to here?

Conclusion?

And keeper.
