This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Good morning.

For one, I understand that misusing Example Indentation as I did could've been a reason my editing privileges got disabled (to the point another troper took some time and dedication to correct them themselves).

However, I'm afraid my attrocious attempt at indenting might not be the only rule I broke.

I'd really like to know what else went wrong, if it's possible. Thank you.

Good morning, ~NICHTIGE. Yes, Example Indentation was one issue but other issues were turning examples into Zero Context Examples, poor grammar, spoiler tagging trope names and natter.

~High Crate: Yes, that is the final decision. Please abstain from participating in that effort.

~Monsund, I think it would be best for everyone if you took an extended break from the thread. Since that is the only area of contention, I'd be fine with suspending you from the Video Games subforum for 4 weeks. We can re-discuss your appeal after that, to determine if we feel that you can revise the behavior in question responsibly. Agreed?

~Camolot, please let me know what's nattery about this edit of yours:

  • Cloning Blues: Averted. Tyler's clone gets a name (Toby), develops cosmic powers, and is adopted by his parents, who are delighted — to the point where Tyler is worried they'll like his new "brother" better. However, Cecil rejects Toby, though he remains close friends with Tyler. It also helps that Toby feels BAD for Tyler, and attempts to assist Tyler whenever he can.

And fix this edit for example indentation:

  • Parental Neglect: Tyler. His parents largely ignore him for the majority of the plot, later forgetting about him completely in favor of his actually super-powered clone-slash-brother, Toby. Toby is the only one who actually cares for Tyler at all, and actually attempts to help him at several points, including when Tyler was stuck on the Argosian starship millions of lightyears from home. Toby replaced Tyler with a construct that was implied to be barely anything like Tyler, and acted "Odd". The worst part? HIS PARENTS NEVER NOTICED.
    • Sadly, and unsurprisingly, this seems to apply to many super-heroes and their children, with the only exceptions being Julie, whose parents are just normal people, and the Emerald Gauntlet family, who apparently makes a point NOT to be. Particularly egregious is Atlas towards his son, Ron, which leads to Ron's parents divorcing, which he believes is his fault.

Aw, man. I see now.

I'll admit that what can be summed up to a rather overdone attempt to adapt some of the existing content into "new" examples has finally caught up to me. Especially when most of my edits involved massive spoiler-tagging (not only trope names) and natter.

While I'll promise you to not make such mistakes again, a recommendation that may help me in improving my grammar is much needed. As you can see now, having a checker by my side hasn't been enough.

Thank you in advance.

~NICHTIGE, we'll just work through the various issues to make sure you're in the clear.

  • Zero Context Example: Any example on a page should make clear within the example text how it fits the trope. A reader should not have to click to another page, or scroll somewhere else in the page, to understand it. For example:

Based on this write-up, I don't understand what an Artifact of Doom is, much less how the 1-Up Mushroom demonstrates how it is one.

  1. Do not ever conceal the name of the trope in a list of trope examples, the list on the work's page.
  2. Do not ever conceal the name of the work in a list of works using a trope, the list on the trope's page.

  • Natter (or Conversation on the Main Page) is when your edit makes it sound like multiple people are talking together.

  • Example Indentation: as stated in the policy page, a single example of a trope goes on the same line as the trope name. If there are multiple examples, the trope name goes on the single-bullet line, and each example has its own second-level bullet. This example of yours has a single example (Koopa), but you split their write-up into a single-level and second-level line. It is also a natter example, as by putting it on the second-level, you make it sound like a different person is responding to the single-level write-up.

    • Adaptational Villainy: Koopa here is miles worse than his canon counterpart, being willing to commit mass murder with no remorse at all and having the gall to pick at at his archenemies' insecurities. insecurities.
      • The only thing that saves him from being downright detestable is that his henchmen seem to praise him.be genuinely loyal to him instead of serving him out of fear.

As for your grammar, we have a thread to assist in tropers. We should focus on addressing the trope issues above first, though.

~MaMcMu, unfortunately there are some areas of concern in your editing. They are creating clean-up for others, which we like to avoid.

Primarily, you have an issue with Zero Context Examples. Examples need to have sufficient context for a reader to understand (without checking elsewhere) how it fits the trope in question. It looks like you re-commented ZCE's on Zig & Sharko without adding sufficient context, as well as adding your own ZCE's on Abominable.

  • Evil Old Folks: The main antagonist is Mr. Burnish, who seeks to prove the world of the existence of the Yeti.

This write-up tells me nothing about Mr. Burnish and how he is an example of Evil Old Folks. You cannot rely on the name of the trope to provide the context.

Less prominently, but still worthy of note, are these:

  • Deleting examples without an edit reason on Balloon Belly. If you are going to remove an example, you should be noting why it doesn't look arbitrary.
  • Violating Example Indentation on Funny.TexAveryMGMCartoons. If there are multiple examples of a trope, you list it like this:

  • Trope Name
    • Example 1
    • Example 2

If there is only one example of a trope, it goes on the same line as the trope name, i.e.:

  • Trope Name: Example

I didn't mean to cause those problems. 1). I just got tired that everyone didn't care about the types that didn't get enough attention. 2). I didn't want to give too much information on Abominable, just doing it piece by piece. 3). The reason I deleted the Asia tab on Balloon Belly, is that I search the web and I couldn't find sources on "Mars Doll" anywhere. 4). It's been a long time since Tex Avery got updated. Again, I didn't mean to make things worse like the walking disaster I am.

Good afternoon, nombretomado:

1) I realize now that Artifact of Doom wasn't the appropiate trope to use after all. Marking it as a Deconstruction of Deus ex Machina (i.e. the 1-Up Mushroom) instead would've validated the example a little better. In fact, I did consider changing the context altogether shortly before learning about the suspension.

2) ...Along with a misplaced punctuation mark between lines. Wasn't entirely sure whether or not the lone redeeming quality Koopa had might've counted as a subversion of Adaptational Villainy (as the "HAIL KING KOOPA!" line from Part I implies that Koopa's armies were in their leader's good graces).

Now I made it sound as if I'm contradicting myself by having both paragraphs separated.

3) And as for the clumsy spoiler-tagged trope names and natter, both mistakes were unintentional, honest.

EDIT: I really am hopeless.

EDIT 2: I've thought about this for a while... and come to the conclusion that I can't exactly justify my actions in any way, so...

I'll just leave. Farewell.

It's been seven years since you were suspended.

You're here due to repeated sinkholing YMMV in a WMG page despite being warned not to do so...and edit warring in the process.

~NICHTIGE, OK. You can appeal if/whenever you'd like. We don't need justifications, just some understanding of the issues at hand and how to avoid them in the future.

~MaMcMu:

I just got tired that everyone didn't care about the types that didn't get enough attention.

I'm not certain what you're responding to here, but I'm assuming the ZCE issue since that was the first item I listed. It's great that you want to edit some lesser-known entries, but you have to write the examples in a correct way. As said above, someone who reads the example needs to be able to understand how it is an example. Let's do a quick test. Can you rewrite this example on Zig & Sharko to have sufficient context?

I didn't want to give too much information on Abominable, just doing it piece by piece.

You should always be editing for a "final version". You are editing on a live wiki, where your edits are seen by other people. If you'd like to play around some examples, you should use a Sandbox.

The reason I deleted the Asia tab on Balloon Belly, is that I search the web and I couldn't find sources on "Mars Doll" anywhere.

OK, then that's a perfectly good explanation. It should have been put as the edit reason.

It's been a long time since Tex Avery got updated.

This doesn't really have anything to do with example indentation. Your edit there was just from less than a week ago, so it's still very reasonable to be discussed and resolved here.

@nombretomado

Yes, I see what you mean. Supposed one example refers to another example on the same page, but then the latter example gets deleted for whatever reason. Thus, the referring example not only becomes outdated but also irrelevant and no longer makes sense.

And I will do your test and correct the example you've given me:

Absentee Actor:

  • Aiden Gallagher (Nicky) was missing from all but the final few minutes of "This Little Piggy Went to the Harpers." The reason in-universe was that Nicky went to a cooking camp.
  • Mace Coronel (Dicky) was missing from "Quadcodile Dundee" with the character first just in another room but eventually sent to Australia as a foreign exchange student. The actor left the show with five episodes left to film, so his character was gone for those episodes.

I would say the entire entry is far more rambling than is necessary, and could benefit from being shortened and summed up. There is far more there than is needed, and it doesn't use the most succinct language. It also rambles off topic towards the middle.

  • Parental Neglect: Applies to many superhero families, and is apparently fairly common.
    • Tyler is often ignored in favour of his clone, thanks entirely to his own lack of powers.
    • Ron is neglected constantly by his father, Atlas, which eventually leads to his parent's divorce.
    • Averted in the case of Julie, who's parents are people without powers themselves, as well as the Emerald Gauntlet family.
