7/10. Quiet, atmospheric ethic jazz piece. My only real complaint is that the vocals seem a bit uninhibited, and melodramatic near the end.

Spellbound (12'' mix) by Siouxsie and the Banshees

[up]8.5/10. The Banshees, in their first 3 or 4 years, were constantly moving forwards. Siouxsie once more doing inventive musical stylings different from previous tunes (singles-wise, there's a fair amount of distance between this and, say, "Christine") being the key element here. That being said, Budgie's drumming is also the co-star of the show, and the galloping rhythm works very well here. It is a pity that this and their early stuff in general spawned loads of derivative Goth bands, but, as is usual, musical innovators (particularly of the post-punk variety) can't generally be topped.

10/10. Yet again you drive your thumbs into my nostalgia trigger. God, what can I say about this track. Hell, what can I say about Suicide that hasn't already been said. The pulsating drum machine beat that plays almost behind the track does nothing to detract from it's adorable declaration of love. Alan, here, refers to his desire as his "comic-book fantasy" showing his larger-than-life limerence for his love interest. While, simultaneously presenting the sort of Geek vibe not well sung about again until Weezer's Blue Album. 10/10

Full disclosure, I have no history with the Castlevania franchise, so there are nostalgia points this remix might earn with someone else that it fails to land with me. But hey, it's still a well-composed blood-pumping ditty that suits a game where characters from across the video game multiverse come together to beat the tar out of each other. 7/10

62/100 - It's not really a surprise sometimes why Anthrax are generally seen as the least of the so-called Big Four; identity wise they didn't quite have the same distinctiveness. It's not savage enough to be an utter riff monster, the songwriting doesn't really get creative enough to elevate the basic into the ambitious, and the musicianship isn't accomplished enough to steal the show. You're left ultimately with what most thrash around the mid to late 80's suffered from; middling wiffle-bat fare that filled the basic genre checkboxes. The riffs chunk along convincingly, the vocals have a quasi-punk charisma to them, and there's undeniable energy throughout but it never rises beyond mere competence into mastery. It's background mosh fare at best.

Highly technically proficient, theatrical epic/power metal track, 5/5.

[up][up] 7-7.5/10. This was actually pretty cool to listen to. Musically, it's great. I really like it. I just wish the vocals and production were a little better.

[up] 6/10. It has some cool riffs but honestly, it's a little too repetitive and aimless for me to get into.

Nice example of blues rock, but relies on its admittedly cool riff a bit too much, 4/5.

4/5. Whatever shertpe kuej is I like it. My only complaint would be that the song is too short. By the time I started tapping my foot to it, it was over.

87/100 - I can't tell if this piece is meant to celebratory or mournful. The thread it tiptoes on is thin but it's an excellent showcase of the type of spirited rhythm and very distinctly ornate melodies of these antiquated instruments. While structurally it's not too complex, the layered delivery reveals far more with the specific role the wind and string instruments play, weaving gorgeous layers of warm and resonant patterns through one another.

A very respectful cover, but perhaps too respectful for its own good. All the brass adds a slight flair to Tool's riffs, and that's where the differences pretty much end. Personally, I think the guitar could have been omitted for the sake of originality. Not bad, but just like that time when Green Day covered Ramones - what's the point? (5/10)

6/10. Catchy song about consumer pandering. Probably truncated the point by making the song sound needlessly repetitive.

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths

[up][up]7/10. A Devo song about Barack Obama's inability to put the banks in the line back in 2009/10? Interesting enough. There's a section somewhere in the middle that subconsciously reminds me of "Whip It", which makes me think the album this came from might not be treading new water. Still, it packs enough punch and energy to make their "nerd-y synthrock" engaging on a political level.

[up]10/10. One of the best Smiths tunes, and a perennial staple of 80's-themed indie nights, as well as one of the most balanced Morrissey/Marr efforts in their discography. Morrissey comes up with one of his best (and uncomfortable) lyrics, Johnny Marr delivers some of the most beautifully melancholic guitar lines/compositions ever (with a little help from a flute melody) and the band is really at their peak here, which is why The Queen Is Dead is one of the best albums ever, period.

8/10. The jagged basslines, and nearly tribal drums perfectly complement Mark E. Smith uncomfortable (to say the least) ramblings.

[up][up] That's what that song was about? God I need to relisten to Something for Everybody.

[up] 7/10. Sounds like Scratch Acid hooked up with Rated R era Queens of the Stone Age and had a noisy twin to Savages (I love it is what I mean).
