Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What's the work?

Ninjago is one of the longest running LEGO themes, recently finishing up the fifteenth season of its accompanying cartoon—and that's not even considering the pilot "movie", the TV special, the 4-part miniseries, the non-canon video game, the non-canon theatrical movie, and the upcoming soft reboot.

Basically, it's no Bionicle, but in terms of sheer content, it's still... a lot.

The gist of the story: Ninjago is one of the 16 "realms" of the multiverse, and was created by the First Spinjitzu Master—Spinjitzu being a martial art style that allows you to turn into a tornado of elements. Definitely not a cheap ploy to sell knock-off Beyblade toys, and definitely not something that got nerfed after the first few seasons when they stopped making said toys, but was too integral to the lore for them to drop from the cartoon completely.

Anyway, the First Spinjitzu Master originated from the First Realm: The Realm of Oni and Dragons, who respectively had the powers of destruction and creation. The Master was a hybrid, born of both species and with the ability to wield both forces. He sought to end their eternal war, crafting golden armor he used to control the Firstbourne, the mother of all dragons. However, the Oni and dragons' hatred for each other ran too deep, and the Master, saddened, fled to a new dimension where he created Ninjago.

A lot of stuff happens, but long story short, the Master's son, Sensei Wu, recruits four ninja to harness the power of the elements and protect Ninjago from the forces of evil. Due to shenanigans, however, they eventually find themselves stranded in the First Realm... where there's more than just Oni and dragons waiting for them.

Who is the Iron Baron?

The Iron Baron is the leader of the Dragon Hunters, a tribe of Mad Max-esque post-apocalyptic raiders who somehow made their way into the Realm of Oni and Dragons, and now scour its barren wasteland. They also have a pretty kickass leitmotif.

Years ago, the Baron was part of an expedition into the "Oni Lands" in search of the Master's dragon armor, only managing to recover the accompanying sword. However, they also found something quite strange: the Oni were all gone. Not a single one left within the realm.

Now, the best way to power is through fear, and the Oni generated a lot of fear. To keep the disappearance of the demons a secret, the Baron murdered his entire party and returned to the tribe, claiming that the Oni massacred them. With the promise that he would keep them safe from the demons, the Baron secured control of the tribe and turned them to the hunting of the dragons. The Dragon Hunters' entire society revolves around the hunting and enslavement of dragons: their elemental powers are used to forge weapons, they serve as entertainment in arena fights, they're a plentiful source of food, and their bones make great structural support/decorations. Pretty much everything the Hunters own, from their buildings, to their vehicles, to even prosthetic limbs, are covered in dragon bones.

The Baron is introduced capturing the stranded ninja, believing them to be Oni and throwing them into a death match with a dragon. They manage to subdue the dragon... with their elemental powers. Realizing they are not Oni, the Baron backpedals to instead use them to aid in their hunts, attracting dragons to them using their powers. Successfully capturing a wind dragon, the Baron sets up a giant pyre, intending to cook the dragon alive for the tribe to feast upon. Fortunately, the Firstbourne attacks, the dragon is freed, and the ninja escape—along with one of the Hunters, Faith, who is tired of the Baron's tyrannical rule and wants the power of the Master's armor to stop him.

The Baron is... well, let's just say he doesn't like disloyalty. He leads a massive hunting party to find and murder them with extreme prejudice, only relenting when he realizes Wu is the son of the Master. The Baron threatens Wu into taking him to the Master's dragon armor, intending to use it to take control of the Firstbourne and secure ultimate power—not just over the First Realm, but the other worlds as well, using the dragons' power to open dimensional portals.

Unfortunately, the Baron fails to realize something very important. The armor was never the reason the Firstbourne obeyed the Master—she did so simply because he was a good person. The Baron? Well... she's a tad offended he thought any of this would work out for him. She breathes molten magma over him, encasing him in a massive coat of hot metal and leaving him to die from a lack of food, water, or oxygen.

Mitigating factors?

His care for the other Hunters? Blatantly fake. He uses their fear of the Oni to maintain power, outright admitting his terms for keeping them "safe" were "treat me like a king," and he exiles or murders any who dare disobey. The other Hunters are all too happy to abandon him and change their ways once his true megalomania becomes clear.

Is he heinous enough?

For some backwater warlord? Dude operates a massive society built off the suffering of dragons—which, much like HTTYD, are portrayed as sapient creatures—with his camp littered with the bones of hundreds. It's a fucking disgusting niche that stands out among the standard PG "take over the world" plots, or even the more serious threats like the Oni attempting to petrify every realm. We're also not given any indication as to how long the Hunters have been in the First Realm (still not 100% sure how they even got there myself), or how long they've been hunting dragons, so we don't need to worry about any previous leaders diminishing the uniqueness.

Verdict?

Easy yes. I have maybe three more from this series: the first should also be pretty easy, the second I'm not quite sure is heinous enough, and the third has some agency issues I want to go over with the thread first.

EDIT: Yes to Delbert, the Queen, Whiro, Xenius.

As for the Baron, leaning yes, but...

  • How does he compare with the current keepers?
  • Don't the Hunters use the dragons for food and other necessities?

What is the work?

Wool Over Our Eyes is a song by the The Stupendium, a non-binary Nerdcore rapper, based on Cult of the Lamb, where the titular Lamb (also non-binary) leads a cult to defeat the Bishops of the Old Faith.

Who is the Lamb? What do they do?

The Lamb is introduced saving a pig and Stupendium's fursona from certain death (As I skip amongst the thickets, well, just look at what I've found/An innocent wee critter sitting, shivering on the ground) and indoctrinating them into their cult. They warmly welcome the new cultists as "bretheren" and shows them around to the farm and construction sites, with the pig cultist just missing the burial of a deceased fox cult member. The Lamb then orders Stupendium's fursona to clean up the cult's feces, apparently as punishment for slacking off.

The Lamb orders their cult members to go to confession to confess their sins ("our movement may be new but your sins are still original") and empty out their bank accounts to donate their money to them ("So empty out your bank accounts and dance around the fire"). After a visit to Clauneck, the Lamb begins a ritual in which they sacrifice two of their followers, a bunny and Stupendium's fursona, by having dragged down by a weird tentacle.

In addition, five graves, including that of the bunny, are seen and another cultist is seen then being buried before Stupendium's fursona is killed. That puts the kill count at about 8, assuming the other graves.

Heinousness?

The first and for now only Stupendium CM is Elliot Ludwig, who sort of lounges around while a toy soldier raps about what he's done to them.

The Lamb takes helpless animals with nowhere else to go, indoctrinates them into the cult, forces them to work and hand over their money and eventually sacrifices them without any remorse. The Lamb has at least 8 kills accredited to them, either directly through sacrifices or possibly indirectly through starvation. More than Ludwig, who instead puts them through a Fate Worse than Death.

Mitigating Qualities?

In the game's canon, the Lamb has a tragic backstory of their species being genocided, their morality is player-dependent and they show remorse if they sacrifice their mentor. This being a video, their backstory is cut and it's just the Lamb being a manipulative dick.

The bunny is given a grave, but it was likely to keep morale, and the reveal also showcases more of the Lamb's victims.

Early in the rap, the Lamb talks about how the other cult leaders "enslaving feeble minds into a life of prostration" and defends their own cult as they have feasts and festival despite forcing them into work and sacrificing them when needed. They're pretty clearly a hypocrite, also promising unconditional love in exchange for the money.

The Lamb does rattle off that the cultists have a higher purpose through their sacrifice, but it is a little iffy considering they have a Slasher Smile as they ask their cultists why they are nervous when they converted in the first place.

The cultists clearly love the lamb, but it is clear that they are expendable to them, and the bunny and Stupendium fursona are visibly horrified as they are sacrificed.

The Lamb does mentioned the One Who Waits, their benefactor, but shows no actual care towards him.

The video itself, like the game, is a little cartoonish, and has the odd moment of comedy such as when the Lamb forces the Stupendium fursona to clean up the crap. But it is played dead serious otherwise.

Verdict?

I think our wooly little Kim Jong-il counts.

For the Lamb, having watched the video, I don't remember their tragic backstory from the game, or anything that occurred in canon, being contradicted, so I feel the backstory should still be accounted for. [tdown] to the Lamb, for now anyway.

However, [tup] to Barclay, Holtzman, Blue John, Stu Maker, Keller, John Forrester, Lilly, Whiro, Xenius (feel killing two Romulans and his supremacism makes the comment about Romulus debatable at best), and the Iron Baron. The other keepers are the Oni leader, a powerful demon with a shadow army who attempts to wipe out all life in the multiverse, and Kalmaar, a prince who gains control of a storm god to enact genocide. The Baron is, again, a backwater warlord of a barren wasteland who operates a massive operation of regular murder and slavery of sapient creatures. For what little he’s got, he stands out fine.

The other hunters turn their entire society around to farm fruits and cacti and stuff growing in the desert after their Heel–Face Turn. Since Faith is cool with the dragons when she takes over, they willingly help out with all the other stuff like forging weapons or allowing them to fly. It’s a children’s cartoon, while this arc is darker than usual I wouldn’t think too hard about the societal implications.

Since people keep asking, the others are Vex (should be an easy one), Vangelis (been a while since I watched his season, don’t remember how bad his enslavement of the mountain tribes is), and the Overlord (made of evil concerns, I intend to go into more detail later).

Just got up, gimme a bit to vote.

Gonna go with no to the Lamb

Now one I have been looking forward to, sincere apologies for the leght.

What is the work?

Thrawn: Ascendancy trilogy recent Star Wars book trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Following Thrawn during his millitary service in Chiss Ascendancy in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, or as it is known to its inhabitants, the Chaos. After mysterious attack on Capital of the Chiss Ascendancy Thrawn is put on to investigate, coming into a contact with expanding Nikadrun Destiny.

And their secret benafactor.

Who is Jixtus? What has he done?

     summary

Agent of the Grysk Hegemony, mysterious empire from the depths of the Chaos. Seeing Chiss Ascendancy as obstacle to Grysk conquests, he trains general Yiv and Nikadrun in ways of conquest, with them using mix of force and coercion to make Alien nations their vassals and Cannon Fodder. Jixtus has Nikardun Conquests pushed in the way of Chiss, but decides that it would require subtler aproach.

Jixtus also has telaphatic Agbui cause civil war on planet Sunrise, just the latest of several world who are found to contain valluable resources, but aren’t worthy of military conquest. Thanks to machinations of Agbui (unoficial) leader Haplif most of Sunrise’s population dies in the war and survivors are enslaved as planet is turned into a mining colony for nyix metal, thought their leader Magys (whose future seeing powers Grysk coveted) escaped.

Seemingly letting Yiv deal with the Chiss himself, starting with him sending one of his Client races to attack Chiss capital in order to distract them from refuge ship in their terrirory, eventually culminating with Yiv planing to completely wipe out the Chiss. All while Jixtus has Haplif and Agbui infiltrate Chiss space in order to cause civil war, with the Chiss goverment preocupied with the war.

Following Yiv’s defeat and capture, Jixtus has two Nikardun outposts in close proximity to Sunrise massacred, in order to turn them into shipyards. Recruiting pathfinder Qilori, member of the Navigators Guild, who used Guild members ability to detect each other to sell out refuge ships to Yiv, having him use his navigator skills in his plans and eventually giving him mission to figure out how Chiss navigate Chaos withous Guild’s help. He did job interview in the depht of the space with Qilori’s ship disabled, with it made clear Jixtus would leave Qilori to die if he refuses.

Luring Thrawn away from Ascendancy with Watith pirates, as part of plan to manipulate 3 of 40 great house’s, all conected to one of the Nine Ruling families, into fighting over a worthless planet (which Haplif has made look like planet abbundants with nyix) and thrown the Ascendancy into civil war. Thanks to Thrawn war is just averted and Haplif is killed.

Jixtus gets in contact with Generalirius Nakirre, leader of theocratic Kilji Illumine and convices him that conquest is best path to bring “enligthement” (brainwashing everybody who “choses” into obedient puppets and killing everybody who refuses) to people of Chaos. Going for the mix of conquest and causing civil war, Jixtus has Kilji partner up with his fleet in spreading their influence to neigboring nations, while he and Nakkire travel Chiss Ascendancy in Nakirre’s flagship, giving information about the battle to influental people and offering military assistance. He also has his ships (made to look like Chiss ) perform False Flag Attacks across Ascendancy in order to futher provoke conflict while Jixtus gives people of Sunrise to Kilji to “enligthen”. Luckily they were stoped by Paccosh, species who Nikardun attacked after they have taken Sunrise’s refuges in and who Jixtus has designated for Kilji conquest.

With combined forces of Thrawn’ troops and Paccosh, Sunrise is freed from both Grysk and Kalji. Thanks to captured Qilori (who was taking Kilji general to Sunrise) Thrawn learns about Jixtus and his conection to their enemies and thanks to recording of destruction of Nakardun outposts Yiv provides admiral Ar’alani with all he knows. As their relathioship detoriates, Jixtus threathens to Nakirre that should he prove to disobedient, Grysk will either crush Kilji into sand or make them slaves. This leads this uneasy alliance to start final phase. Manipulating captain Roscu of Clarr Family, whose family patriach has acctualy accepted offer of military service, into believing that Mitth family is behind everything and venturing to Sunrise sistem.

There they have her attack rocket launcher disguised as a asteroid, planing to either destroy her ship or get into combat with another Chiss ship, plunging Ascendancy into all out war, with Jixtus’ fleet ready wipe out what is left. It almost works, but luckily captain who noticed her is not idiot and they trick them, with Grysk destroying launcher to leave no trace.

Thrawn uses Qilori to lure Jixtus and Nakirre to Sunrise. Believing Thrawn has Magys’s relative, Jixtus happily reveals his scheming to seemingly defeated Thrawn, bringing 15 Grysk warships to finish Thrawn and his alies of and gloats that he would also send Agbui agains some of Thrawn’ Alien allies. Thrawn reveals his trap, including fact that his Paataatus alies have destroyed Kilji fleet. Jixtus coldly has Nakirre exucuted as letter rants about how this is all Jixtus’s fault.

Boarding his own flagship FateSpiner, Jixtus Directs his forces from safety of Sunrise’s atmosphere. As aliens who suffered under Yiv come to Aid Jixtus attempts to make his escape. Qilori, realising Jixtus could use this to call for bigger military attack, takes command of Kilji ship and has it shoot at FateSpiner. Dying Jixtus and Thrawn converse as Jixtus destroys his fleet in accordance with Grysk way of leaving no trace. Mocking Thrawn by the fact that his leadership would punish him for this and claiming that Chiss and their alies have just delaied their destruction, blowns his own ship up.

Reddeming qualities?

Literaly only thing I could see is the fact that he kills himself after Thrawn offer him medical assistance.

Hovewer, he spend his last moment mocking Thrawn about his incoming punishment and destruction of Chiss and aliens who had allied with them for this battle and he is shown to be Grysk supremacits. Coupled with fact that he is already dying. It Honestly dosen’t come of as mitigating, simply Jixtus taking chance to mock Thrawn while making sure Chiss are unprepared for bigger Grysk attack.

Othervise no, he is smug sadist hiding behind veil of cultured mastermind.

Heinouss standard?

Star Wars EU has high standard, not nearly as Legends but it is slowly getting there…

… Jixtus is at the moment one of the worst in this continuity. Grysk are nasty and I woudn’t be suprised if we eventually get more of them, but Jixtus is their face for now. He is the schemer whose plans to remove one of biggest obstacles to Gryks’s galaxy wide conquests, be it causing civil war or enabling conquests of other tiranical regimes, consistently threathen countless billions.

Conclusion?

Assuming we don’t find that thing at the end mitigating, Big,big yes.

[up][up][up]I know that some people believe Overlord has agency issues for being made of evil. And yeah it’s very likely if one of the Oni redeemed themselves that would prove he has proper agency in my eyes

Actually, I should ask, did the Iron Baron know the Dragons were sapient?

Also, the SCP candidate did remind me, how is the heinous standard treated for works like the SCP Foundation, which play loose with canon? Does every entry and story have their own HS unless they crossover? Does it apply except when articles contradict each other? Or something else?
