Tropes Needing TRS cleanup and discussion thread

Should T-Word Euphemism be removed? I don't know of any swear words starting with t that are "_-worded" and it only uses the first letter of trope.

T for Trope

Removed from what, the list? Because your argument seems more in favor of keeping it on there.

The entry argues that the name is bad because there exist real bad words beginning with T, and is using the depreciated "trope"-as-placeholder method. TheRandomSurfboard is disputing this claim by saying they can't think of any such words, and that it's only using one letter of "trope".

For our part, the only real bad T-words that come to our mind offhand are "trap" and "tranny", though we wouldn't be surprised if there were more. So they definitely do exist.

Ah, alright. Either way, I think the title is misleading and weird, even if the entry can be reworded.

Took me a moment, but 'tard and tranny also came to mind. Granted, the former is a shorthand version of another word, but it is still used. Some less offensive but risqué uses would be tits and testicles.

And Tinker, which is apparently yet another anti-Roma slur (at least in Ireland).

The entry used to focus primarily on the "it reminds people of other slurs with 'T' and that's offensive" argument which I find silly. I think I rewrote it so it was more about the placeholder.

That makes sense; the placeholder definitely obscures the meaning and adds some unnecessary confusion.

I am requesting, if it's alright, that I may add Flagship Franchise to Tropes Needing TRS, after this Trope Talk thread raised issues with it. Now I know it's a short thread, but this trope is legitimately confusing and I think it may be worth adding.

Alright, added. Here's the write-up:

• Flagship Franchise: The description is pretty short and doesn't explain very well what this concept is, and the trope attracts entries that don't describe a franchise, per se. A Trope Talk discussion found some of these issues with the trope. There are 148 wicks, so a wick check ideally should tackle either 50 or all of them.

Is this good?

(I've decided that, when I add something to this page, I will list the wicks the trope has and how many need to be checked, to help with wick checking down the road. Is that also alright?)

Seems fine to me. It tells people what they're getting into if they want to try tackling the issue; it's a bit better than ignoring the wick-checking part entirely.

How about Chic and Awe? Existed since 2009, 20 wicks excluding indices.

Items in "Not Thriving" are probably free additions, right?

Yeah, that's the one folder I have absolutely no concerns over.

Oh, this thread exists. My bad. Anything in Short-Term Projects tend to go under the radar because they're not perpetual and you have to already know they're here.

Anyways, I don't see it as particularly useful Trivia. It's basically the other end of Shout-Out and rarely actually interesting to know when something's been referenced. Plus it's by definition not even about the work itself directly, just other works.

Thing is, since the page is under discussion right now, examples are under tighter scrutiny than they were before. Also, personally disliking a page isn't a valid reason to TRS that page; there has to be something objectively wrong with it.

(There's also a hidden link to this thread at the very top of the editing screen, so... yeah)

I think Referenced by... is still interesting in the sense that it gives one a picture of both how often and how differently a work can be referenced in other media. Sometimes it's as subtle as a title reference, other times it's a shot-for-shot recreation.

And being Referenced by... is a foundation of Small Reference Pools, Alice Allusion and such?

Heck, it's only has ~1500 wicks while Shout-Out has multiples more.

Yes, that's why it's Trivia and not a trope.

I'm only noting it here to ping them, as I completely agree with their reasoning, plus the trope has had lots of discussion lately (there's even a wick check for it, tho I forget the sandbox), and honestly I'm surprised it wasn't on that page already.

May I suggest adding Ass Pull to this list? I have noticed many times that it’s typically used to complain about plot points rather than demonstrate unforeshadowed twists.
