Misused (Alt Names crowner 6 August 2021): Everythings Better With Monkeys

I'm not fully convinced on either but they might be worth trying.

Heroic, no (I can't think of a particular trend with heroic monkeys above any other examples — even the humanesque aspect is more incidental to many of these works), but Gratuitous, maybe.

Gratuitous seems chairs-y to me, unless they're in a place where one would not usually find a monkey.

I don't really think "gratuitous" works for things like this, because "gratuitous" is generally used to mean "uncalled for" or "excessive without ample justification," , like "gratuitous violence".

"Gratuitous Animal" doesn't work so well, partly because it's potentially chairs and a ZCE magnet. Especially if we're going to start doing "Gratuitous X" for every animal that exists.

No, Gratuitous Monkey is not a tropable concept. We already have Garnishing the Story for it and that plus subtropes already draw misuse. Object-specific subtropes are not really tropes and would encourage folks to list all instances of monkeys.

Been trying to remove some more misuse in the sandbox (courtesy link). In the meantime, should we temporarily make Silly Simian a redirect so we can handle wicks as well?

If so, we got 2050 wicks, including 109 from a redirect.

That will be a lot of work to clean up.

Silly Simian has an overwhelming number of votes. I think it's time to create Silly Simian and move the valid examples there. Should it be created in TRS?

You mean TLP? Maybe. I think we're working on a sandbox for the old trope and that'll be what we move to the new name.

Regarding moving it to the new name, does that mean the mods will transplant Sandbox.Silly Simian directly to Main.Silly Simian, or does it mean it'll have to go through TLP after Everythings Better With Monkeys is dewicked?

(I haven't followed this thread in a while, so I don't recall if this was already discussed.)

I removed a few unnecessary paragraphs from the description in the sandbox. Will look through the examples now.

I don't see anything wrong.

Dewicked 115 wicks so far. Still feels like nothing compared to the 1930 wicks we still have left to go.

It'll be easier to dewick when we go forth with the description swap so we can move examples to Silly Simian.

So don’t bother dewicking if the page that mentions the trope does NOT imply “monkeys exist”?

What I mean is there are examples I don't want to delete until I can move them, because they actually do work for the original meaning of the trope. For example, I was going to move the example on Rhythm Heaven because the monkeys are partly used for comedic effect in that game, but Silly Simian isn't a page yet so I couldn't proceed, and deleting it now and re-adding it later would be unnecessary extra effort.

Well, I don't see any reason not to make the swap.

There is a definitely a tendency for artists to add a new world monkey hanging off branches in the background by its prehensile tail, however out of place (the epitome for me would be in one of Usborne's Puzzle Adventure books, The Vanishing Village, which is clearly set somewhere in England). But I don't see how that would be tropable.
