Soft Split Cleanup

Go To

So, it's been a trend for soft-split tropes to be split into multiple sections even when it's not needed and makes the page a hassle to navigate. In some cases, the trope in question is so large that hard-splitting some (or all) of the internal subtropes into their pages is more beneficial than letting them take over the page.

EDIT: Here’s the sandbox for this effort—Sandbox.Soft Split Cleanup

"fraternal twins exist" is not a trope. So, yeah, cut it.

Rite of Passage is divided into "fictional" vs. "real life" rites. I don't think this is a necessary distinction. They serve the same purpose regardless of whether or not the ritual used are based on real world rites.

Company Cross References is divided by company, with all other examples hidden in an "other" folder. Splitting it by company seems fine, though idk about so many examples being hidden other a vague "other" folder, some of them seem large enough to justify their own folders.

There's no need to split Nightmare Ned between levels, yes? The game is about an hour long.

There's this weird soft-split on Quotes.Elves Versus Dwarves that separates "Pro-Dwarves" quotes with the "Both" quotes.

Loudness War has two subpage for "aversions" and "Worst offenders". Is this kosher?

Sent the aversion page to the cutlist since this doesn't seem to be an Omnipresent Trope. Not sure how to organize the rest of the examples though.

Fad Super has its Comic Book examples soft split into Marvel, DC and Other examples, which I'm p sure it's not allowed.

Ok for me to merge them? Plus, if anyone thinks the comic book examples are large enough for a subpage, they could also be split into one, but I don't think so.

[up]Actually, sorting examples by franchise/creator is pretty common, and I don't think it's disallowed. If the particular franchise/creator has a lot of examples, I'm fine with it being "soft split" to its own section, especially since some individual work pages with enough examples can be hard-split to its own subpage.

It's when the examples are soft-split based on arbitrary divisions of the trope that it becomes a problem, since a single work can employ the same trope in different ways, and soft-splitting examples by the specific manner the trope is used will just lead to duplicates and confusion.

I'm aware tropes are allowed to have work subpages, I had just never seen folders organized that way in trope pages. If it do is allowed, though, I'm okay with it.

(Also re:"soft split" in your message, if this is the wrong thread for it, sorry then, just wasn't sure where to put it and this seemed like the closest one)

Got a question here for Pressure-Sensitive Interface. Most of the examples in the video games folder are about various gaming consoles having pressure sensitivity as a built-in feature of their controllers —listing some video games that make use of that mechanic. None of those are actually In-Universe.

Wouldn't it be better to soft-split that folder into "Video Games — Consoles" and "Video Games — In-Universe" or something of the like?

Wouldn't they not be under Video Games at all, but the real life folder?

[up][up] That seems like a more sensible option.

[up]I know, but I was in doubt because of the many examples.

So, do I proceed?

FranchiseKiller.Video Games

This has 17 creator folders with "Other" folder at the end. It is such an overcompliated page. Sorting it by creator seems questionable when 1) Franchise Killer is about works, not creators 2) a work can have different developer and publisher, and 3) the distiction becomes ambiguous when the rights to work switch hands over time. It's strange Might and Magic is listed in "Ubisoft" when more than half the series predated their acquisition.

Wouldn't it be desirable to get rid of folders and sort them in alphabetical order?

Irony has a weird split. Every namespace has its own subpage, but spoofs are kept on the page and are not put on their relevant sub-page. I've just cleaned up the Web Original/Webcomics/Web Animation sections, which had non-spoofs under the spoofs split even when they were in their correct location on the sub-pages (resulting in duplication), and I've noticed that there are Web Original spoofs on the sub-page, despite the spoofs section supposedly being on the main page (I have not yet moved these to their correct location).

I haven't checked the other folders to see how widespread the problem is, but right now I'm not seeing the value of this split. I'm also not entirely certain whether to categorise this as a hard-split or a soft-split because it seems weirdly half-way house.

[up][up]I agree that sorting them by creator is foolish. An alphabetized media categorization sounds like a more sensible approach.

Tactical Rock–Paper–Scissors has a weird split based on various weapon triangles, and all the entries in these folders are ZCE. If I unsplit them, can they just be cut?

I think the statements in #492 regarding company folders on FranchiseKiller.Video Games also apply to ExecutiveMeddling.Video Games.

Cue O'Clock is divided between non-time examples and fictional examples. The trope is about when you replace the numbers in the clock with stuff other than numbers for either comical effect or In-Universe reasons. And the soft split reflects that.

Is it a reasonable split or should I just unify it back and just categorize by media?

Sandbox.Franchise Killer Video Games Cleanup

I made this sandbox for FranchiseKiller.Video Games. This page is a lot more troublesome than I examined. Some examples are not in alphabetical order.
