Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

~Solarius: Have you checked out the Settings page yet? Almost all fictional settings can be described by a combination of those tropes. In addition, you might want to check out the "Geography and world history" section of the Useful Notes page.

Welcome to Corneria! What is the forum policy on creating threads for shows that have had reboots? Should the reboot and the original have separate threads, or can they use the same one under a general name?
Optimism is a duty.We don't really care. And by that I mean it's up to the people in those threads to decide if the reboot or remake or whatever is sufficiently distinct to be worth forking off a conversation for it.
What we expect is that, if there are multiple threads, there is not a lot of crosstalk between them. So if we're discussing Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender in one thread and the Netflix remake in another, the conversations should remain separate. I'm reminded of how often threads for individual MCU works end up discussing other ones, or the MCU as a whole.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There is no problem with creating pages in English for works that haven't been translated into English, don't worry. I can thunk of a good number of works that have no official or fan translations in English and have pages in the wiki.
Use the original names in French; If there are names/terminology that you feel is important to explain what they mean in English, you could put in parentheses what they mean.

Would it be appropriate to make a thread for tech questions? There may be questions about the site's workings that aren't requests and don't fit into development threads. Or it's better to ask kory in private?

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIf someone has a tech related question they can probably just ask it in the Changelog thread. Idk if it merits a new thread since we already talk about that kind of stuff in there.

Now monitoring Wishlist and Bugshey there
i realise this is likely hypocritical of me, but:
are there any rules against following a user's edits?
i have an editor who has been repeatedly checking my edits after i told them to stop being vitriolic in ATT; while i can take the l for indentation, i wasnt sure if there was a rule about following an editor for reasons that are not because of repeated mistakes
not sure if that makes sense: like, say, if there is a difference between "i noticed this user has grammar issues and i checked their edits, which revealed a long line of grammar issues and i'll keep an eye on them' vs a spat in ATT leading to one party following the others' edits around
v thanks, it's just a little concerning. they have only tried to nail me on indentation so far

hail, holy queen of the sea, you're whirling-in-rags, you're vast and you're sadTo me it sounds like that troper's private concern, if you're not violating rules do you have anything to fear? If they edit your examples because they seek an excuse to argue with you, then we could call bad faith editing.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThat does sound like there is an element of stalking involved, as well as potentially some vindictive motives over your initial comments. Feel free to ignore them if they become overbearing towards you, and if they don't get the hint, contact a mod about the issue.

Optimism is a duty.My blind guess that is the exact line between what qualifies as a positive expression of collaborative responsibility and what qualifies targeted harassment would be determined on a case by case basis via contacting the mod team privately with details.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranSo, I'm not sure where to ask this: Is the Us politics thread safe to be opened gain?
I was wondering, since its been a month, and felt a fresh start with more thorough rules, especially for an upcoming Us presidential election year, the thread should be given one more chance to be opened.
If not, then Sorry for asking. Thank you.
Watch SymphogearBased on what I remember, the admins and mods want to have the slow function and other mod functions working for the thread to open up.
I do think a US 2024 election thread should be opened up for that specific reason, both to keep people up on that and until the general politics thread opens back up.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."You are correct, it won't be opened until the slow mode is fully implemented.
Optimism is a duty.Slow mode cannot come soon enough.
This is Idol Tap. (My Troper Wall)I'm not sure if the intention is to have slow mode permanently enabled on the thread or only brought in on days when it's going to be needed (like the election), but the mods and admins have asked that we discuss that in the Self-Moderation thread in OTC.
I will ask do we have any indication on when slow mode will be implemented outside of this thread? I know it was mentioned as a technical limitation that it couldn't be applied outside this thread/section of the forum.
The problem is simply that right now, slow mode needs to be hard coded into a thread. That's not something they want to go through every time they need to enable/disable it for a thread, so that is what they are working on now.
Optimism is a duty. That is, IF they're actively working on it. Might not be high priority right now.
This is Idol Tap. (My Troper Wall)Tech updates and changes are discussed in the Changelog thread, not this thread, so you'd probably be more likely to get a better answer regarding slow mode's progress in that thread. I don't know when slow mode will be implemented, but since there were two holidays recently, development has probably slowed down for a while.
Edit: The header for this thread didn't mention this (it only mentioned taking requests to Query Bugs and Query Wishlist without mentioning other types of tech discussion), but it was mentioned further up this page of the thread, so I amended that bullet point to mention the Chagelog thread.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. There was a recent proposal that all examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard submitted by two particular tropers should be cut.
- In one case this was due to concerns about plagiarism and secondary sources (writing examples based on another wiki's information, not based on the work itself).
- In the other case there were concerns that the troper was misrepresenting characters and exaggerating or omitting things to shoehorn them into the trope.
Having talked about this a little within the mod team, we appreciate the concern this caused on the CM & MB cleanup threads. An awful lot of work goes into vetting each new example of those tropes, but — like most of the wiki — the process still relies on tropers following the rules and acting in good faith.
Decisions on these two cases have already been made. But if anything like this happens again, we'd like to use a more structured approach to support the cleanup.
- If a cleanup thread wants to review individual examples and keep or cut on a case-by-case basis, that's fine.
- If there is a wish to immediately cut all examples of one or more tropes from a particular troper (or cut all examples of a trope from a particular work/franchise), without reviewing them individually, then this needs a more formal consensus.
(The exception to this would be ban-evader edits, which already have their own reversion thread & policy)
As a default option, we'd want any "cut all without review" decision to be supported by a Crowner, with the usual rules and an ATT post to draw attention to the Crowner vote. It's acknowledged that this might not always be appropriate, though, so we're open to deciding this on a case-by-case basis.
The key thing is that the wider wiki community (and the staff) should have visibility of any decision made on this scale. If a cleanup thread identifies a problem and thinks that this sort of mass-cutting of examples is justified, mods should be hollered to start this process.
Well okay, was really waiting for formal consensus to pull them all anyway, but having this be the set standard could make future cases more easier.
MB Pending | MB Drafts | MB DatesSo as long as the "cut all examples by this troper" can't be done solely based on the opinion of those that frequent the CM or MB threads, this sounds reasonable to me.
The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundI also don't mind the crowner. More consensus is always good
I'm hoping this doesn't happen again. But just in case.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."So where would the crowner go? On the cleanup thread and mentioned at ATT?
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM Drafts
Thank you very much, Amonimus !
