Having the other characters try to keep the door closed does help drive the "hated" part across.

[Jaxxon] has the benefit of being a character not portrayed by an actor, a much more light-hearted annoyance from the cast rather than someone punching Jar Jar and unlike Jar Jar, Jaxxon did actually make a cameo as a skeleton in the desert◊ (something JJ Abrams only teased during the production of TFA).

There's even rumors that his abrupt drop out from the Marvel Comics Star Wars was due to George Lucas looking at the character once and putting a mandate on the writers to never use the character again.

Actually, why do we even need two subpages of The Scrappy of Star Wars? They could be combined into one.

Note, while this video does defend Jaxxon, it did acknowledge that there was hatred for this character with websites being cited. I'm surprised he isn't on this page or Legends.

I don't see what not being protrayed by an actor has to do with anything. Jar Jar is a much more well-known Scrappy, so keep the current. Agree to merging the canon and Legends pages, though.

^ The issue brought up on the other thread is that the actor was harassed after the movies because of how much people hated Jar Jar, even considering suicide at one point.

So on one hand, making fun of Jar Jar may be a little harsh.

On the other hand, we're making fun of Jar Jar, not the actor.

Keep current. Jar Jar is too recognizable and we don't control how shitty people are.

Actually, the current is (widely-plagiarized) fanart, so we probably should get permission to use it. It's also on Der Jar Jar, the German version of The Scrappy.

As I brought up, the current one doesn't really illustrate as much. I prefer the comic book one, it shows multiple people hating a single character.

My issue is that it's in-universe hate we're seeing, not fandom hate.

Yea to the swap. Knowing what Ahmed Best went through I'm not comfortable with the current one.

I dunno, Jaxxon was infamous among fans of the early Star Wars heyday. John Tyler Christopher, the artist who did this cover, was likely one of those fans. In fact, there's seems to be a running joke regarding Jaxxon with the folks, who were just young fans during the original releases of the Star Wars Trilogy.

They had the audacity to showcase his bones in The Clone Wars at the desert. Maybe that's where Abrams got his idea of Jar Jar's bones on Jakku.

The OP says he has a problem with the rude caption... so let's change the caption.

The current image is more illustrative than the suggestion, though. In part because (as pointed out above) the suggestion shows in-universe hate which is a different trope. And in part because this trope is literally called "the jar jar" in other languages, so that makes it pretty obvious that he's a more fitting pic than some random green rabbit.

Keep. And if it turns out we don't have permission, find another pic of Jar Jar.

No, I said that was one issue. It's also a duplicate and used without permission.

Jar Jar Binks is the single most well-known fan-hated character not only in Star Wars, but in any media (a lot more than the Trope Namer, Scrappy-Doo). While it is sad what Ahmed Best had to go through because of the haters, it doesn't change Jar Jar's iconic status. It would be odd to have a relatively obscure character like Jaxxon in his place (this is the first time I have hard of Jaxxon).

Yes, that. I've watched a lot of Scooby and had literally no idea Scrappy was hated until I became a Tvtropes regular.

Earthbound Fan: The same image being used on a German page isn't a problem; in fact I think other languages often should use the same image as their English counterpart. Der Jar Jar originally showed just a picture of Jar Jar, but I changed it since that was blatant JAFAAC.

I mean... duplicate images are pretty bad, but sure, we should keep it. Remember, this entire thread was made out of a discussion of the image caption, but then the discussion fell into discussing the image. I’m not 100% one way or the other, this is just to keep one thread on-topic.

We could also find alternative images of Jar Jar Binks that get the point across in a playful manner.◊

I personally don't mind the page image as it's just Black Comedy on Jar Jar. I mean we should not change our minds on Jar Jar just because Best nearly committed suicide. I think I remember him saying that the Darth Jar Jar theory was true so I'm sure he doesn't care about jokes about the Gungan. Just leave off anything related to how people harassed Achmed Best and Jake Loyd. If we had to change the image, that's a good place to start.

I'm with rjd1922 on this whole thing though.

As WarJay mentioned, we should ask permission to get a piece of fan-art. Surprised we had that page for years and never considered that.

We should keep Jar Jar but find a better image; that's plagiarized Fan Art. So if we can't get permission, it has to go. The suggested version is a good start.

Well if we want Jar Jar to remain the page image, there was an old Legends comic that focused on how much his father hated him.

I could probably find a better quality image later, but he's a few panels.

I don't know. I never read the comic but I kind of feel bad for Jar Jar in that image. I think that's a little meaner than the current image.

I'm not swayed by the arguments to change the current, largely because of the In-Universe objection pointed out.
