New Feature Released: Video Examples

We just released a beta version of our new Video Examples feature which Fighteer announced was coming in the changelog thread yesterday.

What are the videos for?

They are meant to give a visual example of the trope.

What is the deal with autoplay?

1. The featured video on the page only autoplays when it’s in view (ie: when you scroll down far enough for the video to be shown on your screen)
2. The autoplay video does NOT have sound. To get sound click on the video then it will open up in a larger screen with sound
3. If you still hate it just go to your profile page and turn off autoplay

How do I upload videos?

This feature is currently only enabled for moderators and admins while we test it. Once we confirm it works well and we create some moderation tools then we’ll open it up to all tropers to be able to add video examples

So far, mobile looks good.

Looks better than I thought it would, and being able to turn-off auto-play is a relief. I just kind of wish it fit the space better, as the awkward square in the middle of the rectangle of space doesn't really use that space to any advantage.

This question came to me: how should I report vidoes should they be misuse?

Use the feedback tool attached to the video frame, or just report the article as you would any other.

It looks interesting but I see this having some of the same pitfalls as picture selection. A "video picking" thread and set of standards will hopefully be in place if the general population get to use it.

Yeah, this is potentially going to radically change how Image Pickin' works...it might be worth creating a new thread in the workshops forum just for that purpose.

Personally, I wonder if this would open the door for cycling through different page images every time you open the page.

IIRC at one time, the possibility was floated that the page image would function something like a gallery, as if the main page pic and the Image Links page were integrated into one frame that the user could scroll through, with one pic designated as the default when the page was loaded. Nothing came of it, but I suppose it might show back up at some point.

It's a cool idea. We did a special technical thing with Creepy Changing Painting, and people seem to like it, so there's always room for additional features like this.

I wonder about the additional burden on Image Pickin' that this might create.

I think it's going to necessitate the creation of a new workshop forum. IP regularly keeps 50+ threads in circulation because new ones are created as fast or faster than current threads are cycled out. Trying to add on threads regarding videos on top of that is going to make things unmanageable, especially since I don't have nearly the time to keep up with IP anymore that I used to.

I imagine we're going to have to make a Main.Video Source for all this as well?
