Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

Speaking of KH4, I had moved an entry I made about the 20th Anniversary Sigurd riddle from KH4 to the franchise trivia page because the riddle is not clearly about a specific game.

Again, people keep posting that the old Mjolnir has been reforged in Thor Love and Thunder with Zero Context outside of how it looks. It’s getting serious.

Is there any other conclusion to be drawn from the teaser? It's unquestionably in the trailer, and as far as speculation goes, "Mjolnir shows up looking like it was glued back together," is pretty strong evidence compared with other ideas I've seen.

As with any upcoming works, all trope examples derived from a trailer should be marked with the source. Besides that, what is the issue exactly?

Okay, I may be getting paranoid. There’s a chance that it could be something different though. Like it could have a new name.

In my defense, Silverblade 2 has made me paranoid with how easily he came down on pages I have created.

UPDATE: He just came down on my edit of the offending post.

This ATT goes over it. From what I gather it wasn't hard confirmed, just a pretty obvious conclusion within what we see.

I do agree with the idea of saying "it appears to be a reforged" version, because it's not entirely impossible it'll be something else. It most likely is just the reforged Mjolnir though.

It hasn't been made clear who is engaged in the edit war over it(beside the OP) due to a lack of details. Ichigo Montoya is the one to put the trope in. And some talk on ATT suggests it's better to keep it as "it seems" for the phrasing. Otherwise, Silverblade2 removed it, but the ATT said it's okay to have that line.

That's the details I found entirely.

Can't we just fix the example if it does turn out to be a different hammer? This Is a Wiki after all.

It isn't confirmed beyond reasonable doubt to be Mjolnir. I'd go with "it appears" for now.

So I just asked this in the ATT page, but there’s an example on Film.Thor Love And Thunder that I’m a bit iffy on:

  • Ill Girl: Merchandise for Jane’s Mighty Thor helmet confirms that she has cancer, like in the 2014 run.
Merch doesn’t count as marketing, right?

Here is a previous discussion on merchandise for future works, citing various examples where novelizations, toys, were misleading.

Because pre-release merch is put into production well before the final product is finished I would say you can trope merch as its own thing but not claim it as representative of the work until release.

Okay. I did take out the trope because Ill Girl wasn’t a trope anymore and we don’t know if the new thing will fit Jane.

I'd add that this specific instance is complicated by the fact that the merch description was later changed to remove the information in question. Whether it was removed because it was a spoiler or because it was wrong, we don't know.

No… we can’t judge if it’s Spoiled by the Merchandise until we see if it’s actually a spoiler in the work. Read the thread I linked to for why.

Recently, the moderation team has pondered on an idea that may add workload on our side, but can discourage either bad edits or socks from a certain individual.

We are considering applying page locks to upcoming works. We've done mass locks before to deter a serial socker before, so this is nothing new.

Right now's the time we ask the troper body if we should go through with this. We can apply a crowner, to make it easier to tally.

I like the idea. We could still use this thread in general possibly to figure out what to make edits, and then submit them in the Locked Pages thread, for instance.

I'm absolutely not in favour of this. HC's sock edits aren't usually wrong; many of the examples he removes legitimately are ZCEs or lack citations. I don't remember HC getting banned for bad edits per se, but rather for attitude problems on the forums and other discussion spaces.

If anything, I'd assume this mass locking will simply drive HC's socks back to the forums, resurrecting all the old issues that got him originally bounced in the first place. So far, his socks have primarily focused on relatively harmless example hiding. We've already caught two of his socks on these forums, I'd rather not see him post here again.

Additionally, HC is known to camp out on certain already-released work pages, so locking down pre-release work pages may make it harder to catch future socks.

Thor: Love and Thunder

  • The Friend Nobody Likes: At least to Star-Lord, Thor seems to have become this. The teaser trailer shows him nonchalantly throwing his cloak behind him, where it lands on what appears to be the chieftain of the planet the Guardians are defending. Then, to add to that, he deserts the battle.

The entry cites the trailer but has speculative language. May I cut it?

HC being more active on the forums can also make them easier to catch. They're be much more quickly in the public view. Especially since their attitude comes up faster for us to see. I never found this whole "harder to catch on the forum" thing to really hold any weight. There's a lot of people in this particular subforum. There's no real other place for the user to go that will actually do anything. They can't request a work page change without going through a Mod first anyway, meaning they're always stepping on a creaked floor.

...We can also lock the Discussion Pages of Unreleased Works by default if that's a worry(and it would make sense as is, seeing as how we're using this thread to discuss them. If it's all on one thread... the best they'll have is the thread for the work/series/franchise/etc. Which makes them a bit easier to find too). Now what will they do? Forcing them into one area makes it easier to catch them anyway. Besides that, stuff like this is discouraging knowing they have to find a workaround, which also can mean it's more likely they'll get sick of it. Right now, quickly making a sock at editing some pages is way easier than going through multiple hoops. At most, the only hoop they would be doing is something like an IP Address faker or whatever. The more loops to stop ban evaders, the better.

This applies to pretty much anyone else who has similar issues.

[up] Yep, cut. There's no way to know if it applies without using speculative language anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if it shows up in the final work.

I do not believe that we should lock upcoming work pages. I think that, by leaving them unlocked, we can actually continue to catch HC socks, which is important because some of his sock accounts made other edits/participated on the forums, which is still ban evasion. Plus it screws over anyone else who wants to edit these pages. Furthermore, didn't HC want pre-release troping banned in the first place? By locking these pages, we are basically giving him half of what he wanted. Thus, I am against such a move.

Locking some page ban evaders has been discussed but not locking all upcoming pages specifically....

If it's just for HC, I don't think its worth the work. They don't edit all upcoming work pages and that isn't HC's only calling card (which is ZCE cleaning). I think temp locking to ward off ban evaders (like with Nate) might make sense in some case but not really this one.

WesternAnimation.Paws Of Fury The Legend Of Hank could use some clean up; lot of speculative tropes and not a lot of citations to the trailer.

Although Sonic Origins is a rerelease, its new content would still fall under the policy and is uncited.
