[up][up]According to the Useful Notes parent page, they're also used to debunk media stereotypes and to provide insight on the subjects explored in the works' stories. If the Ivy League is prominent enough in fiction, then I think it can stay. I know my word doesn't have much weight here, though.

[up][up] "Kakatte koi" is the main phrase. "Kakatte koi yo!" is just The Same, but More Specific, as "yo" is just a particle of emphasis, akin to an exclamation mark.

Bumping my post since I feel enough days have past and it seems to have been buried.

I've been wanting to do an update to the UN page for Professional Gaming for a long time now, because boy, the page is rough. To put it simply, almost all of the information is outdated and frankly covers the wrong kind of material; it mostly consists of explaining non-standardized, often long-deprecated rules of individual competition for certain games (some of which like Team Fortress 2 never really had major esports enterprises to begin with) and a list of individual pro gamers (most of whom are now retired).

I've wanted to do a major rewrite for over a year now, basically an almost complete overhaul focusing less on the pointless minutiae that will become outdated fast or trying to comprehensively write down the rules of literally every game that's played as a pro enterprise, and instead on the history and discussing the general culture and trends of most pro gaming scenes, as well as their broader impact on Video Games as media. My last draft was written on my personal sandbox page, I think I'm about 90% done with it; one entry I think would be important for this wiki is covering references to esports in fiction, which are rare, but certainly out there.

Thoughts on this? I'm honestly not sure what the due process is for a rewrite this big; due to the sheer amount of content I'm replacing, I don't want to just change the page unilaterally, and I'm absolutely sure I need to run it by more folks, haha. If I can get the go-ahead to publish my rewrite, or if there's anything more that you think should be added that isn't just rules and players of note, let me know.

[up]Your version is definitely much more befitting the "useful notes" name. The previous version was too in-depth on specifics and not broad enough, plus the lack of mention of anything in the past more than decade.

[up][up] Sounds good. I would recommend you write it up in the Sandbox namespace and post it here to get an extra pair of eyes on it.

[up] Been a few days, but done! I'm not sure what the threshold requirement is for this draft to be published, but I'd very much appreciate some review of any necessary changes or improvements before the go-ahead.

One side discovery I made: there's an Awesome Moments page for "Pro Gaming" (not "Professional Gaming") that I didn't realize was indexed until now? Any idea what to do about that?

If it helps, I think the page looks incredible. So, in TLP style, I tip off my hat for it. [tup]

EDIT: Talking about the draft in the sandbox. I don't know what to make of the Awesome subpage.

[up] Much obliged! One last thing I may need to address; I also found out there's a separate trope called Tournament Play that kind of covers what my draft is supposed to, but is also really confusing for what exactly it's supposed to encompass (no list of entries of fictional works documenting the trope). May need to put this in the TRS Queue as a duplicate trope.

Can someone please redo or revamp the Useful Notes: Mexico page? The opening paragraph in particular is vague at best and offensive at worst.

UsefulNotes.Brazil has a list of Brazilian media, in which everything there is already listed on Brazilian Media, except for Useful Notes/ pages on Brazilian people, but those shouldn't be under "Media" anyways.

Good to cut?

[up]All other entries around it who have an index for it link to their respective index, so I don't see why not.

[up][up]Rechecked, and it's all there, except for obviously the Useful Notes/ ones, and Yoruba Mythology, but that one's a bit more complicated.

I'll cut that section out, then.

In the discussion for UsefulNotes.Sociopathy, this was brought up by RaichuKFM:

Bluntly, this is all bullshit. It's a near-entirely unsourced and repeatedly self-contradicting ramble based on trying to polish a cartoonish trope into an actual description of real people, done in different ways by different people at different times, none or almost none who knew what they were talking about. Where it references research, it's unspecified or stuff like Hervey Cleckley: woefully outdated, pioneering in a field—and thus mostly wrong about that field. The result is just outright demonization of real people, presenting a term that has no actual credible modern usage as if it's a real thing with defined behavior.

This used to be an Analysis page, and now it's Useful Notes with apparently all the old problems still there. And now worse because it's in the section that's supposed to be talking about a real thing affecting real people, without the fact it's clearly in the wrong section to spark reflection on if it's shit.

This page is genuinely unacceptably vile. This is spreading lies about real people. This is contributing to the site culture where certain kinds of mental health issues are presented—explicitly—as making people subhuman. That's not okay.

I know this is not the way to try and raise this point. I'm not qualified to explain why this is wrong in more than the broadest terms. This also probably isn't the place to raise this objection? It's certainly a problem beyond the scope of this page. But for crying out loud, somebody has to do something about this already.

With a reply from Rahab

Just come across this and I fully agree.

The page appears to be based entirely on an infantile understanding of this psychological condition (and morality).

They could have just wrote "Sociopath is when bad" and achieved the same effect as this spiel.

I'm inclined to actually agree with them, but what do you think?

Benedict Arnold needs some serious work. It's a pretty dull stub that only describes his popular reputation as a traitor, and says nothing informational about his actual life. The Emu War has the same problem; there's more info out there about the time that Australia tried and failed to manage the emu population in 1932, but the page is very bland and just amounts to "Haha, the internet made a meme out of Australia's failed emu extermination, so funny!"

[up][up] Maybe the page should just be cut? If it's actively spreading medical misinformation, I don't think the site should keep it.

Yeah, since we don't link to citations much here as The Other Wiki, we really should not keep this page of questionable info, if not straight up dangerous misinformation. Seconding the cut.

As someone who actually knows/knew a handful of real-life sociopaths, UsefulNotes.Sociopathy has always gotten on my nerves; there's way too much bushwa about what shapes sociopaths, rather than what they themselves are, or any cited bits of research (The Other Wiki has some detailed sources about how psychiatry has tried to find the connection between ASPD and soft signs, which is six times as informative IMO). I'd 100% support a cut.
