The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.
The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.
A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.
Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

Just don't forget a wick check or some other evidence.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI might do the rewrite on Quinn if that’s alright.
~Beast In addition to my previous thoughts on Stu, Mickey and Charlie, what's your take on Rebecca Walters from Scream 4? I personally say no to her since while she’s kind of an Asshole Victim, you’re kind of made to feel sorry for her since there’s a strong amount of time that’s spent on Ghostface tormenting her. Also, it’s hard not for Alison Brie’s charm to come through in the performance no matter how much of a bloodsucker Rebecca is before she’s targeted.

Found this under Characters.Ichi The Killer for Kakihara:
- Hate Sink: He is, without a doubt, the most disgusting and vile example of this trope ever written.
Yeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhh, I've seen the movie but haven't read the manga, but I can say that's ... pretty hyperbolic.
It's also a complete ZCE.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessYou know, I actually had a new Hate Sink.
So in Tammy and the T-Rex starring Paul Walker and Denise Richards, the two are playing a brand-new couple, right? Enter the ex-boyfriend, Billy. He's very angry that Tammy (Richards) has a new guy, so what does he do? After Michael (Walker) shows up at Tammy's house, Billy kidnaps Michael, beats him, then drives him to the zoo and leaves him in a wild cat enclosure to be mauled by the lions, which leaves him in a comatose state. So Dr. Wachenstein, who has this T-Rex animatronic he's trying to animate, steal Michael's body and transfers his brain into the T-Rex animatronic. Eventually Michael (whose brain is controlling the T-Rex) breaks out of the warehouse and shows up at a party, killing Billy by biting off his head. The film is strange by any means, but Billy is horribly realistic in contrast.
"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and kills...Okay? If he fits, you can add him. You don't need approval.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure Pureness...Ah, screw it. This thread refuses to move past the "examples need approval" mindset, and we seem to agree that TRS is needed to really fix problems with it.
Who's down for a community Wick Check, on the Wick Check thread linked in my sig? If this trope really does need TRS then we can't just keep sitting around watching this thread be misused and watching the issues continue to pop up. Since the backlog has cleared immensely recently, this is a good time to get a thread going.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHere's Sandbox.Hate Sink Check. ~k410ren would you like to contribute?

Rock'n'roll never dies!I’ll contribute.
"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and killsI'll check out wicks tonight. And, like I said, we should move this to the Wick Check project thread to avoid derailing this one.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessMaybe a derail isn't always a bad thing if the thread decides "we give up, this needs TRS." I know this was before the WCP, but the GCPTR thread did the same thing.
Rock'n'roll never dies!True. It's just that now that the thread exists, it may as well be used. But if people want to keep the wick check here, that's fine too.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessPerhaps the thread needs a retitle to "Removing misuse from Hate Sink". And some hollers when people effort post about examples they are proposing for addition.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI mean, "cleanup" should ideally tell people what the thread is about, but alas. Maybe we do need a title change.
And I'll start hollering if that's what you'd like. I was hoping that explaining to people would get them to follow the rules, but it's been several months and the issue is still recurring, so I guess stronger action is needed.

Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessCleanup is so heavily associated with the CM and MB threads that it’s understandable to see where the confusion comes from.
That said, yeah. I know better now about how this thread can be misused like that.

Are Percival Mc Leach and General Morando hate sinks?
We are discussing the trope in TRS, so please hold off on these sort of enquiries until we know what we are doing.
Rawr.Mind linking when it goes up Sky?
...Who is doing the TRS again? I'll link when they do it.
Rawr.Alright....So I wanted to voice a disagreement about certain things here, it involved the EP system, cause I was unable to speak here when that was going down, but I'm also scared of causing yet another Drama. As I'm in a bit of a Sensitive mood for the time being.
I'd just like to ask in advance, if I can say it without it causing any sorts of problems with others? I'm not saying a lack of debate but, lack of anything heated.

The First manI found this example on the page for Halloween II (2009):
- Hate Sink: Laurie herself, having absolutley no reedeeming qualities to make you empathize with her, spending time between having hysterics and bitching out at people who are clearly only trying to help. Also, Loomis in a sequel is a despicable, heartless, borderline sociopathic and greedy Slimeball. His death at the hands of Michael is quite cathartic.
I've just removed the example.

He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself.I can appreciate your concerns Kylo and while I can say I won't yell at you for voicing disagreement, I will point out that it's a topic most of us have found needlessly cumbersome, with mods having to be brought in and the same points raised until the dwindling few who like having the EPs be entertained at all slowly accept it's a minority opinion. On one hand I don't want you to be scared to say what's on your mind but on the other it's a subject we've been over a dozen times, most of us agreeing it doesn't work for this trope and I can't guarantee people won't get pissed off about having to go through it again, things getting hollered or thumped, etc.
Honestly I'd chill on deletions/additions/rewrites until the TRS gets underway because as it stands I'm not even sure we all have the same understanding of what this trope even is.
