1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

[up] Hmm, ok. I tried that in preview mode (didn't do anything), but I didn't save my changes.

Edit: Ah, ok, space below the line. That works.

Where the banner for Charactour should be, my avatar shows up instead. There are no other images showing up wrong, as far as I've seen so far. There are a few other such misplaced images, but they can be fixed with a simple iPad doubleswipe, or whatever it's called.

~Discar: The following issues from your list are fixed:

    Fixed Issues
  • The arrows you press to navigate a thread only appear at the bottom of the page (previously they appeared at the top as well).
  • Indentation of numbered bullets is inconsistent with regular ones, and how much indentation there is seems to depend on a number of factors, including:
    1. The nested level of the numbers (#, ##, or ###)
    2. Whether a second-level list is under a first-level number or a regular bullet
    3. Whether the list is inside a folder or not.
    4. Hashes create a, b, c lists instead of numbered lists
  • Another display issue found: when Night Vision is turned on, the white text and light bars for "Header" and "WMG" headings, as well as newly posted forum comments I've made, make them practically unreadable.
  • A minor display issue: The new "This is a YMMV/Trivia entry" icons on the main page overlap the surrounding text.
  • Line breaks and indents don't work properly in quoteblocks.
  • Three bullet indents seem to randomly indent more than they should (see Slay The Spire under Awesome, but Impractical) (Firefox)
  • Visual bug: Just what the HECK happened to the images? Consistent size visually, yes, but not when the pixels are at different ranges. Now the taller pictures take up more space than usual.
  • If you go to TLP Reform Statistics (look at page source too), you'll see that the colon indentation method is broken. If you use two colons at the start of a line, it's supposed to indent the line. More colons, a greater indent. But it looks like the indentation is like a line break no matter what.
  • Quote indentation is broken again; quotes are indented one line less than the number of dashes. So two dashes (which is what is supposed to go under one bullet) is the same level as one bullet. Looks terrible.
  • The markup that used to decrease font size isn't working. See the first sentence on TLP Crash Rescue Tallies, which should be decreased by two sizes. The page loads the font as the smaller size and then resizes it half-a-second later to match the normal font size. (Desktop, Windows 10, Chrome)

New bug, Firefox current, Win 7: the Cliché Storm trope page is missing the sidebar and oriented to the left, even though on all other pages I have the sidebar on the left. The sidebar and links to the index are aligned vertically at the bottom, as if the page failed to properly load.

Guys, I'm sure this has been asked lots of times, and I found several answers by Googling but none of them worked for me, but also this thread is super long and I don't really wanna go page by page, so...

Where the heck is the image uploader? I wanna update an image (to a page I launched myself) but the image uploader is nowhere in sight. It's not under "More" and it's not under "Tools." Is it just available to mods now, or...?

EDIT: Never mind! I found it!

Might be an idea to make the image uploader for visable to save us having to search for it

@Viper Magnum 357 & Ripsaw: On Chrome, Windows 8.1, it seems the sidebar is missing, and instead its options are relocated underneath the page, on top of each other.

Since we seem to be stuck with the new blue-grey, does anyone know how to change it?

Today's list of site changes:

  • Fixed header searchbar on iOS
  • Fixed "Follow" text appearing over "follow" buttons on skinned pages in iOS (Darth, sugar, etc)
  • Spoilers can now be hidden via click IF you have show-spoilers toggle ON
  • [strike] text renders in forum preview
  • Fixed awkward spacing between lists that are broken apart by comments
  • Fixed broken HTML on nuked thread pages
  • Add back "find posts by troper" in forums
  • Fix broken html in forum search results
  • Improve accuracy of new search results for tropes/works. If you type in multiword searches like "family guy" you should see much better results (still need to work on forum search results)
    • this will take a few more hours to finish re-indexing all pages on the site. About 50% down as of 5:30pm PST

Nice to see "posts by troper" back (though I'd have preferred to see all posts instead of just going X posts back like before, unless there's a reason it's done like this), any progress on "search by forum title" (which I miss even more)?

I find it kinda odd that Wiki names like The Amazing Spider-Man or Mercenaries get mislabeled with a YMMV or Trivia bullet. Weird!

[up] It might help to post some links of where your seeing this behavior. I took a look at a couple of the wicks on the Related page for VideoGame. The Amazing Spider Man and the links back to the page didn’t have the Trivia or YMMV icons.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to upload images on the new design. It used to be the Image Uploader tool, then a link accessed from the More tab on any given page, but now I'm not finding any way to upload images.

Has it been pointed out yet that the "move this example elsewhere" icons (like trivia, ymmv) are occasionally covering preceding text? I've seen it a few times today on various pages. Here's Attack of the Clones, one covered and one not covered.
