1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]

  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Don't think this has been mentioned yet, but line breaks in edit histories don't appear to be working. Everything's condensed into one big wall of text. See YMMV.Sonic The Hedgehog's most recent history for an example.

I tried to add a trope on the Puyo Puyo page, and while the edit took it also hid every single trope after the one I added. No edits I've done trying to fix it work. The tropes are still visible in the edit window, but they don't appear on the page proper.

Another display problem summary post:

  • Folders
  • Quote spacing
  • Quote indents. Quote indents in particular all display the same no matter what their actual indentation is, which in many cases makes quoted lines weirdly off to the left instead of properly indented under their example.
  • Bullet indents. Indentation on second-tier bullet points looks wrong. Rather than there being a separate column for the white bullet point, the text simply wraps around as if the bullet were part of the paragraph. It's hard to explain it with words, but it looks ugly.
  • Bullet spacing
  • Image sizes, with borders
  • No spoiler toggle on the sidebar (very serious; the toggle basically ended years of spoiler debates)
  • Line breaks don't work properly
  • Weird alphabetization on related pages
  • Note tags are plain text
  • (mobile Chrome) the first few options on the main menu are gargantuan and take up about an eighth of the screen each
  • The arrows you press to navigate a thread only appear at the bottom of the page (previously they appeared at the top as well).
  • Forum posts are no longer numbered.
  • The number of the last page on a given forum thread no longer shows up.
  • Indentation of numbered bullets is inconsistent with regular ones, and how much indentation there is seems to depend on a number of factors, including:
    1. The nested level of the numbers (#, ##, or ###)
    2. Whether a second-level list is under a first-level number or a regular bullet
    3. Whether the list is inside a folder or not.
    4. Now numbered lists are showing up as "a, b, c, etc" instead of numbers.
  • The before and after boxes in History are way to near each other, some text I've seen also goes outside the box as well, they need to be expanded a bit.
  • (Firefox) Cursor disappears in text box for PMs and editing.
  • (Firefox) Using the find function (CTRL+F) on a page with folders will find text inside the folders even if they are closed, making it difficult to find anything.

Anything else? And try to include your browser and OS.

[up]x8 @catmuto:

That sums up my feelings on the new folders exactly. They don't stand out from the rest of the page like the originals did, making it visually harder to tell if there's a folder there or not. It's just another inconvenience and poor aesthetic choice that seems to be the running theme with this new layout.

I think this "update" is best summed up by the link to this discussion in the bulletins not even working properly.

I'm just compiling display issues, not wiki-breaking bugs. The mods are compiling those.

"mark all as read" is now forum-breakingly buggy. Not only I've had a bunch of disturbing cases of having the confirm dialog replaced by another, but like a minute ago I tried to mark OTC as read and it marked the whole forum. No wait, I thought so but it turns out it didn't do anything, I mistook the lack of green checkmarks for the entire forum being marked as read.

One thing I do like about the update is that the “save edit” button is always on the screen while editing instead of being below the editing field (at least on mobile). I truly believe that’s an improvement. [tup]

Another display issue found: when Night Vision is turned on, the white text and light bars for "Header" and "WMG" headings, as well as newly posted forum comments I've made, make them practically unreadable.

I also find the massive editing space unwieldy, as it requires scrolling through two spaces, with the editing bar getting in the way now that it's laying directly over where I'm trying to type.

[up][up][up] Yeah, but by the same token the timer that tells you how much editing time you've got left isn't always on the screen anymore — you lose view of it once you scroll down any amount and have to scroll back to the top of the page to check how much time you've got before the edit lock. When you only have a finite amount of time to write in your edits, not being able to keep track of how much time you've got left without having to scroll all the way back to the top of a potentially very long page and then all the way back to where you were editing isn't a very helpful thing.

I agree that having the save button always on hand is a very nice thing, no question there, but all the same I can't say I think the new editing interface is a terribly convenient one.

Here are some couple things I've noticed when browsing the pages of Granblue Fantasy (which I currently am focused on). Although these may have already mentioned in the seven backlogs on top, some may be redundant.

  • The last entry of a bulleted list has little spacing compared to the rest, while in the source code, there is a line break. I guess a second level heading (!!) has something to do with it.
  • Apostrophes disappeared from trope names! (i.e. Cant Drop The Hero or Chekhovs Gun)
  • IIRC, second-level bullets are supposed to indent the lines past the first one, Check the last entry of the page's Color Coded Item Tiers. It looks as if the last bullet forms a new paragraph. If the first-level bullets can wrap paragraphs properly, then it should also apply to the inner bullets. Of all the formatting changes, this is the most jarring one IMO.
  • The Awesome, Awesome Music, Funny, Heartwarming, and Tearjerker now have pink headers on top? I believe the previous theme had more variety when it comes to these Sugar Tabs' colors.
  • On the Ho Yay Tab, Les Yay folder, there is a white strikethrough on the seventh bullet
  • Editing a page, then clicking Back from the browser will immediately lock the page. Clicking the locked Edit button does nothing.
  • I don't know if it's just me, but some links to other works have been "redirected", accidentally making red links on the referencing page.
  • The Nightmare Fuel tab says "This page has not been indexed". I double-checked the Nightmare Fuel > Video Games page, and Granblue Fantasy is listed there.
  • Check the Quotes tab, first level ("Songs") and second level ("English Vocals") headings have the exact same text formatting.
  • The WMG Headings are now in plain text format (same size as the normal text, and no longer in bold)
  • The image in the Main Characters page now floats to the top-right, just because it is written above the headings in the source code.
  • For some reason, in here, the "open / close all folders" control appears in the middle of the page, just beside the sixth folder.
  • A lot of the images used in the Character pages became smaller.

I won't be making any edits to this site unless the problems are fixed...

I'm using Win 10 Chrome...

I only just realized that you can adjust the size of the edit box when editing a page. Not a bad idea, but I feel whatever determines the default size is faulty when it comes to longer pages. While testing this out on YMMV.Sonic The Hedgehog, it took about two minutes to get the edit box to a reasonable size. I like the idea on an adjustable edit box, but there needs to be a set default size that's not so cumbersome.

On a related note, the size adjusting icon could stand to be a bit bigger. Right now, it's just a series of tiny pixels arranged as a triangle on the bottom right corner. It's fine when making posts on forums, not so helpful trying to find it on an page with hundreds of entries.

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask about this, but... along with all the problems with this update, I'm wondering why there hasn't been a "report troper" button added? IIRC, you currently have to go to "Ask the Tropers" to report somebody, when I think it'd be much easier for all involved if you could go to a troper's profile and click a "report" button, maybe fill out a form?

I've been here too long. Regretting choosing this screenname ten years ago.

I have no idea if I’m stuck in the mobile view or if for some reason the desktop view looks like a worse version of the old mobile view, but there’s no option to change the view as far as i’m aware of. Also, the size of this thread at less than two full days is one way of telling that many people have issues with the changes that have been made. And while I know saying this probably won’t help, I really wish the old version could come back at least until the actual bugs have been mostly worked out so that I can at least tell myself that it “only looks bad” instead of “it looks bad AND is super broken”

also, saving drafts for thread posts is still messed up. turned I’m into IP and stopped after that even though I had gotten further than that.

So far the only issue I have is slight lag while editing, and the placeholder name. Otherwise I haven't seemingly had that many glitches or bugs. So my only real problem is that the website looks more messy now, and that the old one (From an aesthetic standpoint) looked better IMO.

Still unable to log in on Safari, but Chrome is fine.

Yet another bug: redirects don't work. (Already reported)?

Folders aren't open by default like they used to be, even though my profile has the setting in question. (I think showing spoilers works, though).

Also, I don't like the new look for indexes on pages, it's pretty ugly and (more importantly) doesn't even look like an index bar.

A lot of effort was put into this update
So?

No, really, so what? There is such saying in my country - "Hell is paved with good intentions". Just because someone worked hard on it, doesn't mean it's good. Quite the opposite. Considering the amount of work this update clearly required, it's just baffling how incompetent it is in communication, implementation and anything even resembling beta-testing, before making a massive, all-in overhaul.

And beating the dead horse: don't have money? Start the bloody Patreon or KS project or whatever the cool kids do those days.

I noticed this site just went through a major overhaul change today. Lots of properties have changed.

However, due to this change in the website, I can't upload images onto the site like I used to, due to the image uploader being broken. So instead, whenever I press upload image while in edit mode, it just opens into a new window with my image. Could you please fix this glitch for me? Please let me know when you do. Thanks again.
