"Moments" cleanup and maintenance (Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming, Shocking, Tear Jerker)

Go To

See here for Nightmare Fuel, which has frequent enough problems to deserve a thread of its own.

A while ago, I made a thread for cleaning up Nightmare Fuel pages, since they tend to attract all sorts of gushing about anything vaguely unsettling, as well as violations of Example Indentation and the Spoiler Policy among other problems. Well, other Moments pages have similar issues, though to a slightly lesser extent, so they may as well have a cleanup thread too.

"Moments" reactions should:

  • Be free of spoiler tags, in accordance with the Spoilers Off policy which states that:
Fridge, Headscratchers, and the various Moments subpages (Tear Jerker, Moment of Awesome, etc.) are for post-viewing discussions. Spoiler tagging there defeats the purpose of the articles. You shouldn't be going there if you are worried about them.
  • Be based on things that actually have happened, not things that could happen, will happen, or might have happened. Speculation belongs only on the Wild Mass Guessing pages.
  • Have affected the writer of the entry themselves. If you don't find something funny or sad, let someone who did add it to Funny Moments or Tear Jerker.
  • Elicit a strong reaction. Not every single time a character accomplishes something is an Awesome Moment, not every attempt at comedy is a Funny Moment, not every time someone does something nice is a Heartwarming Moment, and not every unhappy event is a Tear Jerker.
  • Explain why they're so awesome/funny/sad: Zero Context Examples aren't allowed on this wiki. Your description should allow anyone to understand your reaction.

This is on Jeopardy!:

Tear Jerker: On the morning of November 8, 2020, the news came that Alex Trebek had passed away in his sleep after a long battle with stage-4 pancreatic cancer. Millions mourned the loss of the man generally regarded as one of the greatest game show hosts of all time. The next day’s episode began with a post-production bit in which executive producer Mike Richards sadly tells viewers that the remaining 35 episodes Trebek had taped would air, before the lights on the set go down.

[up] While the news certainly is depressing (I watch Jeopardy every night, and have for years) it is also meta, so unfortunately cut.

Could be rewritten to be about how the actual post-production clip is tearjerking, but "creator dies" is the exact kind of entry that got Tear Jerker added to NRLEP.

Honestly, I actually was wondering if the post-production add on to the first episode aired after his death was ok to keep...

That's about the show itself, so yes.

And yeah, fellow Jeopardy watcher here. Pretty sad stuff.

Someone died. In other news, the sky is blue.

OK, that was way insensitive. But it does still happen all the time.

I heard Trebek's last episode will air around Christmas, and I imagine they'll do some tribute for him. Maybe that would be fitting for the page when and if it happens?

We'll have to wait until then instead of adding reactions based off the possibility. I have seen a few tributes on other channels already. But this is getting a bit off topic.

Bump

From Awesome.Ben 10:

  • Saving Kai is also pretty good. The Omnitrix refuses to work, so he just hops over buildings, jumps on a barrel, grabs Kai, and jumps for an awning. That goes into the hero book, no matter what ANYONE says.

I mean, I'm pretty sure I should remove this, but what the hell is that natter about?

Looks like a valid example without the natter.

I found this of Sonic Adventure:

The first bullet I think is fine, that is a rather humorous face. The second bullet, on the other hand, seems far too subjective.

[up] I see, didn’t notice it was linked to Heartwarming when I first clicked on it.

[up][up][up] Yeah, you can comment out things like “just Character X and Character Y’s interactions” and stuff like that.

This was added to DuckTales (2017) - Season 3:

  • The implications made by the last photo, of Max and Roxanne on a formal date, presumably prom. Max might either just be in senior year or even in college by the present. Either way, Goofy's still doing active photography as a job, rather than be a factory worker that loses his job over being emotionally affected by Max going to college, thus forcing him to take a year of it. Thus, combined with Max's better relationship with him, in this continuity, the drama of An Extremely Goofy Movie is avoided.

TearJerker.South Park: The section about "You're Getting Old" is bloated with natter, and outdated speculation that it was a series finale. Context:

  • This episode is easily one of the most depressing episodes so far. It starts off initially well, with Stan having his 10th birthday party surrounded by friends and family. He receives a CD from Kyle featuring music that his mother, Sharon, disapproves of (because "it sounds like crap"), and it's taken away. However, Stan has already downloaded the music to his iPod, and begins listening to it, only to realize that he only hears shit. He speaks to Kyle about this, who can apparently hear the music perfectly, and Kyle suggests that he sees a doctor. The doctor administers some tests which consist of playing two music tracks (both of which sound like more crap to Stan), and then comparing a poster of crap to a poster of an upcoming movie to Stan, to which he responds that they look the same. The doctor eventually tells him that he's developing cynicism, which comes with age, and it will entail viewing and hearing things that once seemed great as a child, as crap. Stan continues to go about his life as more and more things appear as crap to him while Randy gets into more youth-related mishaps with the new musical movement (naturally, this is all Played for Laughs, with even a bit of Lampshade Hanging thrown in by Sharon, up until the last five minutes of the episode). Things eventually turn darker as Stan's friends completely alienate him due to his new attitude, and to make things worse, Randy and Sharon begin to argue and acknowledge that neither of them are happy with their lives anymore. The episode ends with Stan seeing everything as crap now, even his former best friend Kyle, while Randy and Sharon begin to sell their house and divide their belongings as they prepare for their upcoming divorce.
  • What about when the real version of "Landslide" started playing? Not some usual South Park parody, but the real freaking song as sung by Stevie Nicks. And seeing Sharon packing up the china. It doesn't hit you that there would be no crap-people, no Satan dressed as Britney Spears, no Tom Cruise or government conspiracy to save the day. And that hurt. We have grown up on this show, and to see it come to it's end is painful. That's the Tear Jerker here. That a show we have grown-up with and and loved will end soon.
  • The whole conversation between Randy and Sharon sounds horribly like Matt and Trey expressing the unsaid tensions of the show's difficult period, making this a meta-Tearjerker.
    • It gets even sadder for three reasons: 1. Two men stealing underwear from Randy in order to protect them from his shitting on stage, no matter how surprisingly entertaining it is especially in this episode, doesn't make it any less depressing. and 2. Seeing Randy, who's random interests has been one of the funniest parts of the show, suddenly reveal that he was actually hiding his boredom with life. Yes, that's right, all of those great episodes are truly about a man trying to avoid the truth about his life, take them from crowning moments of funny to Funny Aneurysm Moments. 3. Stan and Kyle's friendship ending, especially Stan seeing his friend as a literal pile of shit after all of those other times they've separated, after all the other things that nearly tore them apart, it just hurts. The fact Cartman and Kyle, who normally can barely stand each other are seen happily playing together while Stan is who knows where, seeing the world as shit and having had his parents split up and being unable to enjoy anything. Wow. Just wow.
  • Stone and Parker confirmed that the show will continue, which makes you wonder what this episode was all about.
  • What generally seems to have happened, among other things, is that Stone and Parker were feeling kind of down from keeping up the frenetic pace of producing 14 episodes per season - actually, split into two micro-seasons per year of 7 episodes each, one in spring and one in fall. They were noticeably cranking out some filler episodes and overall don't seem to have been satisfied with the situation. "You're Getting Old" was the mid Season 15 finale. But then, starting with Season 17, Stone and Parker abandoned this split-season model to make only 10 episodes per season, all aired in fall instead of spread across the year. They explicitly said they wanted to do this to focus on quality over quantity - and seasons since have received widespread acclaim from critics for their quality and innovation. Starting in Season 18, they even started experimenting with making season long story arcs. The point of this long explanation: don't walk away from the above feeling depressed, things were pretty shitty by Season 15, but they got better.
  • This episode can work as a metaphor for just getting more and more cynical and depressed with age or even just depression.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
