[up] Watched a video on it and yeah, he betrays her and she doesn’t forgive him even at the end when he dies so I wouldn’t consider it creator preferred.

Yeah just as I thought. I feel like this is why it takes more the being together to be "creator preferred".

Yeah, especially in stuff like this where they end off not together and you can tell it was clearly the plan from the start since it's a movie. It's like saying an endgame couple was an FPC during the time one of the characters was dating a blatant Romantic False Lead. It's pretty obvious which one's creator preferred there.

Yeah that is why it's important to take a work as whole.

Also, that later scenario is why I think there needs to be a waiting period for this trope.

Also from Live-Action TV:

  • While Official Couple(s) Ryan and Marissa and (especially) Seth and Summer are very popular in The O.C. fandom, many fans continued to ship Marissa with her short lived bisexual love interest Alex, long after she had dropped off the face of the Earth. It is also never made clear whether or not Taylor and Ryan ended up together, but the fans are nearly unanimous that they did.

Okay I looked at all the usual places Tumblr, Twitter, reddit, YouTube, AO3, and FF.Net and the canon Ryan/Marissa is far more popular than Marissa/Alex and the other confuses me on if they have creator preferred one or not.

[up]Pretty sure the entry states Seth/Summer is an Official Couple? Sounds like they're the creator preferred couple. Seems to me this is one of those entries that thinks "couple that some people ship over the main couples" counts.

From what I understand for a ship to qualify for this trope, it must have a canon or semi-canon couple as a rival.

In that case, none of the Star Wars Rebels couples qualify.

  • Kanan and Hera is official.

  • Kallus and Zed have no love interests and therefore there is no rival ship canon.

  • Sabine and Ezra also have no love interests and therefore have no canon rivals.

[up] Correct. We call it creator preferred. Official Couple, Word of God says they are the preferred one, or they have a Maybe Ever After.

Also yeah those don't count for those reasons.

Anymore opinions on the O.C. or Gotham ones or am I good to cut them? Also anyone mind if I take a stab a rewriting this one from Live-Action TV?

  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A vocal part of the fandom pairs Zelda Spellman and Lilith/Madam Satan together over their canon interests of Father Blackwood and the Dark Lord respectively. That is despite how little they have actually interacted in the two seasons. This is especially true with their other love interests Adam for Lilith and Mambo Marie for Zelda. On Archive of Our Own they have the most fanfiction of any pairing, even topping any with the actual lead, Sabrina by a good margin.

Also there is this from the same page.

  • On Stargate Universe, the Eli/Chloe shippers seem to be far more numerous than the Chloe/Scott shippers, despite the latter being canon. The single most common complaint about the episode "Light" is that Chloe and Scott's sex scene in that episode came out of nowhere. It doesn't help that Eli is the audience surrogate for the first few episodes, or that Scott had another potential love interest (Lt. James), or that before they had sex, Chloe and Scott had had just one scene with just the two of them, while Eli and Chloe spent much of "Darkness", the episode prior to "Light" together.
    • Most of them have given up by now, due to a combination of three factors: 1) Eli and Chloe's friendship gets just as much screentime as Scott and Chloe's relationship, 2) Any realistic chance of the ship happening vanished sometime between "Incursion" and "Cloverdale", and 3) the rise of Eli/Ginn caused many Eli/Chloe shippers to jump ship.

Okay this is odd but not true both have a far more popular ship with Rush. Who is also shipped with Young, which seems to be most popular. Rush was married and has The Lost Lenore, Young was married and has an affair with another character. So I propose we write it to focus on both with Rush and/or make one for Young/Rush. Thoughts?

From The Secret Circle:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Cassie and Jake or Faye seem to be more popular than Adam where the show seems to be leading us. Also Faye and Diana have one based on their Foe Yay.
    • Faye and Diana to a ridiculous extent. Wetpaint recently ran a "who should Faye be with" poll. Only Lee and Jake were mentioned in the title and the article itself, but the poll also included Diana. Diana won with over 87% of the vote.
      • And when the official Secret Circle website ran a "Couples March Madness" competition, not only did Faye and Diana win, but they absolutely destroyed every single couple they went up against, including beating the aforementioned Jake/Cassie in the final with 92% of the vote.
      • It's speculated that the main reason Faye and Diana grew so much was because people assumed Cassie and Faye were sisters instead of Diana

Jake/Cassie and Faye/Diana are the two most popular, with both have canon competition. In fact, here is the current entry for them on Live-Action TV:

  • In The Secret Circle, Faye/Diana is more popular than Faye/Jake, Faye/Lee, or Diana/Grant to a ridiculous extent based on all the Foe Yay. Wetpaint recently ran a "who should Faye be with" poll. Only Lee and Jake were mentioned in the title and the article itself, but the poll also included Diana. Diana won with over 87% of the vote, and on Archive of Our Own, they have over twice as many fics as the next most popular pairing.

My proposal write a new entry for Jake/Cassie and crosswick the one on the main page to the YMMV page.

Most of these shows I haven't seen. I heard Faye/Jake was pretty damn popular from The Secret Circle though. Again, I'm not the one to ask though.

Nope Jake/Faye was super overshadowed by Faye/Diana, plus Jake/Cassie, and still is.

Future I laid points and facts, maybe use that to make an opinion on my points.

From Fargo: Season One:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Wrenchers (Mr. Wrench and Mr. Numbers) seems to be the most popular pairing in the entire series owing in part to the pair's banter and ambiguous relationship. A03 lists their pairing as the most popular, having over triple the amount of fanfics as the next most popular ship (Lorne/Lester).

This is indeed the most popular, but neither have love interests from memory. Permission to cut?

Okay I finished going through the pages and hiding/removing zero context examples. Leaving this commented out note:

This trope needs a canon couple to overshadow for it to count. The canon/ones with no canon couples to compete with are removed. The ones without mentioning them are hidden/rewritten. If you want to unhide one please add a canon couple or come to this thread: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=14860997890A40152400&page=1

Might want to check Charmed (1998).

I think only Phoebe/cole is valid.

Okay:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Piper and Leo are the One True Pairing for fans. Piper's only other significant love interest Dan has very few fans. Piper's love interest Mark (played by John Cho) in "Dead Man Dating" is quite popular - which is surprising for a one-episode pairing.Canon. Just a bunch canon. Though yes Leo/Piper is her most popular. They get married.
    • Phoebe and Cole, due to the Love Redeems nature of it — and Julian McMahon really making Cole into quite The Woobie.Keep Phoebe ends up with Coop.
    • Prue and Andy. Although Prue got two more love interests during her short time, most view Andy as her one true love.Canon from memory.
    • Prue and Cole has some traction, due to the Foe Yay aspect (and the fact that their actors were dating).Phoebe/Cole and Prue/Andy are more popular.
    • Paige is unique in that she doesn't seem to have a love interest that's liked or disliked more than the others. But Henry is usually accepted as her true love, the chemistry between the two actors making up for the rushed nature of it.Canon again.

So yeah, only Phoebe and Cole count just needs a rewrite. Everything else is a misuse.

It surprises me that Phoebe/Cole is eligible, given that it's a canon pairing. Yes, I realise the relationship went horribly wrong and she ended up with Coop, but isn't that a canon versus canon issue rather than fan-pairing versus canon issue?

Or is it a case that it can count if it's used as a fan pairing preference against Phoebe/Coop during a time when Phoebe/Cole no longer exists (as in, fans prefer continuing to ship Phoebe/Cole as if Phoebe/Coop never happened, or something to that effect)?

I mean with TV shows I go by endgame. Like Hyde/Jackie from That '70s Show or Barney/Robin in How I Met Your Mother. It's like a love triangle. It matters who wins. But at the same time there needs to be a winner or else they are both canon. At least that is my take. I want to hear others opinions.

Honestly, it doesn't even have to matter who wins because historical examples exist (though unless Word of God says otherwise, the endgame pairing is usually a certain indication on what the creator prefers since Romantic False Leads are a thing). As long as the alternative pairing is more popular than whatever was canon at that point in time, generally, it can count. Of course, exceptions can be made, which is why we judge things here on a case-by-case basis.

Yeah it's always important to take it case by case and especially historical examples. Like we don't allow Hook/Emma or Clarke/Lexa despite allowing Oliver/Felicity because while all three were non-canon at one point the former two were overshadowed even before hand by other non-canon ones which continued after they became official while Oliver/Felicity was the most popular and debatably still is.

Anymore opinions on the examples I brought up above?

One final thing I want to bring up. From The Vampire Chronicles:

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Louis is the preferred partner for Lestat across the fandom despite Louis getting much, much less screen time than in the first few books and Lestat falling for other people left and right. This is probably why AR makes a point of having Lestat call Louis "most beloved" in later books and sulk over missing him.

Now here is the thing I don't know how we treat this. Like is this a case of Star Trek, were one of them having so many other love interests or is the fact that they are canon a problem. Like Lestat falls for Rowan Mayfair in the last book and it's treated like a tragic love story. Is that enough to be considered creator preferred?
