More photos. I have Strong Opinions on Abu's appearance.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Because he’s clearly based on a New World monkey?
Peace is the only battle worth waging.I'm just glad Abu is in the movie. For a while, I was wondering if they were going to go the Broadway route and bring back Babkak, Omar and Kassim instead - which I wouldn't mind, but still...

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Saw Aladdin pantomime, got me thinking about the live action film they're doing, think they'd have characters from the pantomime as a homage? Would be funny if Widow Twankey showed up somewhere..

New theme music also a box...Okay, I'm gonna say it.
Jafar is freaking hot.
Yeah, I know people have been saying this for a bit but hey, I didn't pay attention until now so there's that.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I wonder if Jarfar will be scaled up in this movie,or they'll just make him really big like in his Genie form
New theme music also a boxThey should totallt go both!
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I will say that this remake seems like it will be sufficiently "different" enough to at least not feel redundant. That's part of why I think I might end up enjoying it.
Then again, the only other remake I've truly 100 percent enjoyed was Cinderella, which changed very little, but just enough to make it feel fresh. Regardless, I'm cautiously optimistic about this particular movie.
Still don't like the idea of Prince Anders, though I do like the addition of Jasmine's handmaiden since we get another female character in the story (there were the three girls in the 1992 film, but they were far from even supporting roles and didn't play a part in the plot).
She/they. Hirrus Clutumnus is my comfort characterThe handmaiden is DEFINITELY a nice addition- again, it's a change that will make the film feel sufficiently different assuming they give her enough screen time. Alright, I'm gonna be honest- I'm actually kinda looking forward to this one! I feel like a kid again!
(I still think most remakes are unnecessary, but this one could at least be fun.)
I like the song Jasmine and the handmaidens have together in the musical, as well. In general, they're good foils for Jasmine when she's not around Aladdin or dealing with things pertinent to Aladdin's presence, which is a noticeable thing in comparison to the original film.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Whoa. Will Smith as Genie...?
......Oh fuck, I can dig this so hard till it reaches the core!
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I wonder if Prince Charming is dead.
I'm more interested in the Mulan and Lady & The Tramp films than the Aladdin one, but it doesn't seem bad. I just wish it was a Maleficent-style Perspective Flip instead of a remake. I would love a film about Jasmine.
Well, Hunchback was one of the movies people have actually been asking to be remade, so this is one of the better properties they could retool.
Of course, they might have to be careful going forward. The original movie threw the word "gypsy" around a lot, but nowadays that's considered a slur among the Romani people. I guess you can justify it being accurate to the time period, but having a big-budget film hurl that word around when its still being used casually by most of the population would be problematic. Hopefully, they'll have some Romani consultants on hand to make sure the film is as respectful as possible.
Josh Gad is rumored to play Quasimodo. He is neither Romani nor disabled.
Thanks, I hate it.
Because if Disney didn't let us down with anything, it's the guarantee they'll reuse as many actors as possible.
x3
You might not even need to get into it too much. Just have Frollo, Phoebus, and Quasi throw around gypsey at the beginning of the film and transition them to use the term Romani during their character development. Quasi would probably shift after Top of the World while Phoebus would probably stop after either Thai Mol Piyas or when he refuses Frollo during Esmerelda.
I really wish they'd just use the Broadway books. We had this problem with Beauty and the Beast 2017; Things changed were fine in either the original movie or stage form and the songs and those added to the movie almost completely had a better version in the stage show instead.
I've been wanting to see a Live-Action Hunchback for absolutely ages and now I'm already tepid about the whole matter. Not using the musical? Josh Gad for Quasi? GODDAMN IT DISNEY!
I am waiting for the Lion King live-action version, but I am slightly worried about Adaptation Displacement.
In an anime, I'll be the Tsundere Dark Magical Girl who likes purple MY own profile is actually HERE!Someone on Reddit suggested Charles Dance for Frollo and I'm like hell he could work
New theme music also a boxHELL YES. Can he sing? Fuck it. Doesn't Matter. We can dub it. CHARLES DANCE WOULD BE AMAZING!
...I wonder if he resents kind of being type-cast as Bastard Father-figures.
Im before jokes about Tywin locking Tyrion in a belltower
New theme music also a boxAs long as the film makes it clear that it's a racial slur, it should be fine if they throw it around amongst the more racist characters. I don't think the original film made it clear enough. Most americans don't know much romani and think that "gypsy" refers to some generic lifestyle or fashion sense, not any particular ethnicity. Heck, we have the Hot Gypsy Woman trope and I remember Esmeralda was put under Ambiguously Brown once.
Casting the characters is the troublesome part. I don't think Disney will cast romani actors for Esmeralda or Quasimodo.

Though I think that problem stems more from Disney wanting to have expensive Star Power than anything. Wasn't Aladdin Live-Action accused of white-washing because someone said that they couldn't get properly ethnic actors for the roles?
I think Hunchback will have it worse as I don't think there are any pre-established Roamni actors or actresses and Disney will either have to white-wash or cast from unproven talent.

Good point. And yes, I worry about the remake, too. But I never judge a movie based on a few set-photos either, so let's wait and see.
Jafar not really paying attention to how Aladdin actually looks like would make sense if not for the fact that he has to specifically search for him based on his face at the start of the movie. Maybe in the movie he searches by name instead? Then it would make sense that he doesn't really see him all that well in the dark.
